It's so so so good!! Just saw it 3 days ago and I've been binge watching every video I can find of Jessie. If you love her before seeing the show, you'll definitely love her even more after seeing it. highly recommend!!!
+A.J. Thomson I'm in agreement that she's extremely versatile and powerful (and I'll add wonderful), but I've got to ask what you define as "the typical Broadway voice," because over so many years, I've heard all kinds of wonderful (and not so much), quite different, and often versatile singing instruments from Broadway performers.
+AvalonMorley I would say most Broadway singers have trained voices (which isn't a bad thing). Jessie Mueller has a very natural-sounding voice compared to many other singers on Broadway and it's kind of refreshing.
Jessie doesn't have a powerful voice for Broadway, and that's why some people don't favor her as well. So she was never formally trained in musical theatre? Didn't she go to Syracuse? Actually Jessie is very limited in regard to versatility as a Broadway actress. Her voice is great for Carole King and Sara Barseilles music, but her voice wouldn't be appropriate for most Broadway shows. She could never play Christine in "Phantom", for example. Actually even Laura Osnes or most Broadway actresses don't have the vocal chops for Christine. So that may be a bad example.
I think if you watch the evolution of her interpretation, you will see that she beefed up her chest register by a considerable amount to the point where her belted notes aren't relying on head voice as much, she is definitely very agile and versatile in her coloring, however her tessitura is more of a mezzo than a soprano, so you can't compare her with coloratura roles a la Phantom of the Opera. It is just a different voice register. Those light coloratura voices actually themselves aren't versatile and couldn't sing the lower parts of this song. What is versatile in her voice is the fact that despite having a lower tessitura, she can still sound candid, young and fragile. Jennifer Nettles for example clearly sounds like a mezzo and has a much dark timbre.
When Sara Bareilles released her album version of this back in October of last year, I was 6 months pregnant with my first child, recently single and I would play this song almost every day while I showered and cry my soul out. As ironic as is sounds, it was a very empowering ritual I had going on, to this day nobody knows that this song, these lyircs got me through a very dark time and now I'm the mother of the most amazing little boy and he loooves when I dance and sing with him all the upbeat Waitress songs. I can't wait to watch Jessie Mueller performs this when I go watch the show in August.
it gave me hope during a tough time too.... you are a beautiful pie …..I fought for myself and now I know my worth and add tax. I hope you always know your worth!!
it’s a line that stands on that juxtaposed fine hair of a line where it’s delivered so delicately and fragile but it absolutely is soul crushing. it’s staggering. it’s everything.
+Taylorzor It was a press event; people from quite a few different media outlets were both taking pictures and recording video. I'm sure eventually we will have videos of Jessie performing this in other contexts, but for now, we should be thankful for this.

the way jessie sang the line "and gets used by a man who cant love", the way it sounded so melancholic and f r a g i l e, it gets me every time i swear
Her beautiful runs on the word “Lonely” is still my favorite out of anyone who sings this song. I always listen to how singers approach the line, not the belt sections. It is a quiet, defeating run that’s defined by the character’s hurt, leaving me breathless.
+SimplyComplicated It's the same exact key. It's just sung with different intention. Sara's is more full and moving and has a pop ballad sense. This is in service of the characters story. But it's the same key.
I came here because of watching the Tony's tonight. Tears. My word, this song is written and Ms. Mueller sings it from somewhere deep in the heart of every woman. Simply amazing.
Jessie beautifully mixes embodying Sara Bareilles' gorgeous tone with the southern accent that Jenna has from the movie, as well as making it her own. I love this so much!
It is so inspiring how much emotion she puts into every single word she sings, almost like this is her experience and not her character's. Beautiful voice, beautiful soul, just beautiful. (ha, get it? 'cause carole king? that was so bad i'm disappointed in myself)
Unfortunately, I can't understand the words she's singing. Was she formally trained as a singer or in musical theatre? It doesn't sound like it based on this song.

this song resonates to much in today's context, in that sense, it is like a i dreamed a dream. No matter how complex or simple the scores and lyrics, if it resonates, it hits a chord within people, it means something
Lausanne28 please don’t call waitress crap. I’ve never heard les miserables but I do think that it must be beautiful in its own way. This musical’s powerful so I’d appreciate if you don’t call it bad. In fact don’t call any musical crap.
It's getting rewinded over and over in the car like I forgot the rest of my play list and I am a guy. Such a great show on Broadway - just wish the soundtrack wasn't from a sound studio but the theatre.
Maddison Elizabeth You're in a good place. A vulnerable, loving place. May you see those hurting near you, and smile at them, because they need you. You are still you, and you are beautiful.

+ctn04132 I think the other comment was meant to differentiate the two. I am a theatre geek and plays and musicals are two different things to me. Omg. Tears, just tears. Beautifully written. So beautifully acted. It's like watching a life time of painful, bitter, and happy memories compressed into its essence seeping from this woman's soul. I watched it several times before even noticing the sounds of cameras or anyone else in the room!
Do you ever find yourself watching this video on repeat and crying about how beautiful this song is and how much a master Jesse is in 2020? Saw this in the theatre years ago so far back and felt every piece of emotion she left on the stage. She is a beast
Elise do you want to meet the best singer of this planet? You don't now know her, if you agree you will never forget this day, I promise. This is not a joke.
This clip was one of the main reasons I decided to see the show last Saturday. The show was amazing. Now, watching the clip again, I feel all of the emotion I felt watching the show. Brilliant performance by an amazing actress. Thanks for all of the feels.
Jessie brings such humanity and honesty to this character. I cry listening to her sing this song because I can just feel her singing about losing the person that she once was.
In Aug. 2023, this is the first version of this song that I saw (I've been "away from Broadway"for awhile😢). A week later, after watching various performances more than a hundred times, I've noticed that most people go bigger (and this includes Jessie's later Broadway performances). Yet, this smaller version is the one that I ALWAYS come back to. Plus, the Beatific look on her face at the end is just perfection on top of perfection!💕 Thank you, Jessie, for giving me my favourite song, and performance, ever.🥰
It's strange, the album version of this seems to have a really overstated, grating country accent (and I don't even hate all country music, I quite like some). This version if so raw, emotional, and powerful, and her singing is so natural. She doesn't sound like she's putting anything on, she sounds like she's living the story.
This is one of the Broadway songs for the ages, like "Memories" or "Send in the Clowns" and Jessie makes it SO intense that it is hard to watch and yet you can't get enough of it!
I can't explain but I started crying 10 seconds into the performance at the Tonys. My mom saw me and didn't say a word. What a powerful song and artist! All of my respect.
Very true! A timeless classic! I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
i think every person who won a tony this year 100% deserved it, but i am deeply saddened that this beautiful and amazing musical didnt win a single thing
Amen! In 2023, I still think this is the best Broadway song of this century. It was the one error of the Hamilton sweep that this didn't win. I guess, as they say, timing is everything!😢
If you're in New York just go see this. I watched it last night and I was blown away by Jessie Mueller. Her raw emotion her voice and characterisation, personally couldn't fault it. It's a real tear jerker but supported by plenty of laughs, especially from Ogi. The score and cast are just amazing. Not to be missed in my eyes.
Never heard this song before but loved the movie Waitress so I looked up the musical and found this. Within the first verse and chorus I was bawling. It speaks to my life right now and I needed to let that emotion out. Sara Bareilles, you are gifted from God with the ability to write and sing music, and Jessie Mueller, your voice is a treasure. What an amazing song...
I've watched this more times than I care to admit. So beautifully performed. She has so much nuance in this--look at her face right before she sings "She is hard on herself..."
How she seems to be able to go to that place and still hold it together to sing is beyond me. And not just sing, but like kill it, is just….I mean damn.
I recently saw Waitress and this musical is amazing and Jessie put on a spectacular and emotional performance. ( I only cried a lot) The entire cast was more than happy to come out the stage door to say hello, autograph, and take pictures. Keala even belted out Happy Birthday for someone and it was fabulous. I would so see this musical again and recommend it to anyone wanting to see a musical!
i constantly come back to this when i feel i’m lacking drive in perusing a career in musical theatre. i fucking love this performance. jessie mueller inspires me with every single role she plays, he vocal abilities are in my opinion unmatched and her ability to adapt to any role she takes is astounding. she is truly an inspiration.
Okay so I heard Sara's version first right, and I was absolutely sold, okay, so I never thought I'd love another version. I stand perfectly corrected. This was nothing short of amazing.
Wow!!!! Didn't think anyone could nail it as good, if not better then Sarah. But dang girl, your emotions and those crazy pipes of yours. You just shook my soul. This is my song. And you blow me away!
This gave me chills, oh my God, I really thought that once that I heard Sara sang this Jessie wouldn't sound amazing, but God, I was wrong, she is incredible.
I also had the honor of seeing this wonderful show last week, and Jessie sang this with SO MUCH emotion and vocal power that I was blown away. A true STAR.
I cant stop myself from watching it over and over again. The emotion in her voice and acting is enchanting that it's hard for me to not buy a ticket to New York and watch it on Broadway...if it's still there.
Did you see her sing this song on the Tonys Awards show last night (June 12th)? Amazing! Absolutely amazing. I have played it over and over and over. It was even better than this recording. This is pure soul music!
you can just hear and see the emotion jessie puts into this song. this is my favorite song off of this soundtrack and jessie’s voice just makes it so much better. the lyrics are so real and relatable and it’s one of my favorite songs from any musical ever. i wish i could have seen this!
+Samuel Reed The race for Best Actress is so tight this year that I think it's a bit presumptive to make a prediction at this point, especially considering a few of the shows (including Waitress) are still in previews. I expect to see Audra McDonald, Cynthia Erivo, Phillipa Soo, and probably Laura Benanti on the nomination list along with Mueller, and most of the early buzz seems to be favoring Erivo.
+Nathan Graham +Nathan Graham Ugh, yes!! there were so many great shows and performances this year. I'm hoping Sandra Mae Frank maybe gets a nod as well, because she slayed DWSA.
I love that there isnt much going on in the scene here. Not an eye catching background, not much movement. Its all her. Theres no additional attention grabbers because the raw emotion and expression is enough to make you not dare to look away
This is by far my favorite version of this song. It is the perfect balance of raw emotion and incredible pitch perfect vocals. I am absolutely in love with it.
This always breaks my heart . So much regret and hope. it rings so true in many ways 😢 yet I keep coming back for this emotional rollercoaster- Jessie’s performance is simply beautiful
I don't think anyone playing the part of Jenna will ever be able to top Jessie. I think that acting ability is often overlooked by how well you can sing or dance in musical theatre but Jessie Mueller has an incredible talent in the area. This song was made for her.
Lyrics: It's not simple to say That most days I don't recognize me That these shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave them It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true I was never attention's sweet center I still remember that girl She's imperfect, but she tries She is good, but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you And you're not what I asked for If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew Who'll be reckless, just enough Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck And be scared of the life that's inside her Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone, but used to be mine Used to be mine She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine
If waitress had waited to open till next season Sara could have won a tony for best score. but it's impossible that she wins this year against Hamilton :( (sorry for my english!)
+Minghao Xu I agree and I'm a huge Hamilton fan (and for me it was amazing and then some) but there's a lot of politics involved when it comes to awards in general, like the fact that Hamilton didn't even want to give any free tickets to Tony judges at first and that will probably affect their chances to win some Tonys, besides the fact that it looks to be a very good and competitive season of course.
Saw Waitress yesterday, and I have to say that this song made me cry, and I do not cry very often. Imagine this recording, except with 100x the emotion. That's how she performed it yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic. I swear if this musical doesn't win a Tony or two I'll be very upset and surprised.
Her voice is stunning! I'm trying to decide if I should plan a trip to New York just to see this show! That note at 1:25 gah! She sounds like a bird lol
+Sammi MacDonald go!! I just watched it last night oh my tears and laughter so much emotion, amazing score and cast & Jessie Mueller, wow, I'm just in awe.
I went to ART where this was being performed before it went to Broadway and this moment was so powerful to see. I get things change again when they go to broadway but she was never weeks away from giving birth and didn't think it was needed when the this scene was changed.
This is quite possibly the most honest performance I've ever seen on RUclips. This was a press event (listen to the camera clicks) and yet... she offers up her unguarded heart. If the world were to end tomorrow, at least we would have THIS document of our humanity.
Honestly I'm quite pissed that Hamilton got all the attention. This show got basically nothing. I just saw it the other day and I cried my eyes out. I love this show more than Hamilton now if I'm being honest. It's just such a raw and beautiful show that relatable for a lot of people in many different. Don't be mad at me that's just my opinion. I just think that this show is so much more powerful. If Hamilton wasn't a thing this show would be basically impossible to see because of the demand to see it. Absolutely beautiful piece of art.
I agree. They had the misfortune of opening up (heh! sorry, can't help it) the same season as Hamilton. It was also so disappointing and maddening that they didn't win the Grammy's. I'm pretty sure The Color Purple is good too, but Sara did such an awesome job creating the music and lyrics for Waitress and as a first-time Broadway composer-lyricist at that!
This is, in my opinion, one of, if not the, most beautiful song Sara Bareilles has ever written.
up there with gravity, definitely
Yep you both sooo right
Up there with Gravity, Manhattan, Send me the moon, Beautiful Girl✨
She has so many great songs. My favorite is Breathe Again.
I have a fondness for _Chasing the Sun._

The pain is so real. I'm in tears listening to this. BEAUTIFUL performance!
A year later and I’m still listening to this version of such a beautiful song. Jessie is incredible.
This is one of the Broadway songs for the ages, like "Memories" or "Send in the Clowns" and Jessie makes it SO intense that it is hard to watch and yet you can't get enough of it!
Jessie Mueller was my favourite! Sara is amazing but Jessie has a quality I can't describe. The pure emotion is everything.
I can't explain but I started crying 10 seconds into the performance at the Tonys. My mom saw me and didn't say a word. What a powerful song and artist! All of my respect.
After6 years, this is still a classic .
Very true! A timeless classic!
I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
I love that this is so different from when Sara sings it, it's just as good, and just as beautiful
The EMOTION in this. It inspires me when I perform musical theatre
one of the best musical theatre performances ever. i keep coming back to it
Everyone please go buy a ticket for this show, it is the best piece of theater I've seen in a long while!
seeing it in August!!!
i think every person who won a tony this year 100% deserved it, but i am deeply saddened that this beautiful and amazing musical didnt win a single thing
Saw it tonight, this song had my heart in its hands
She feels every note…stunning! ❤ Wish I could have seen this on Broadway.
She is all this and baked in a beautiful pie.. brilliant lyric.
This is an anthem to all of us who feel like we have lost ourselves at one time or another. Thanks Sara Bareilles for putting it to beautiful music.
I sobbed throughout this entire song. What a special talent she is and what.a.song.
Really, I couldn't even understand the lyrics. She's not trained properly in musical theatre.
I've watched this more times than I care to admit. So beautifully performed. She has so much nuance in this--look at her face right before she sings "She is hard on herself..."
+mikeyeeca I saw and felt that, too. So appreciative of her art.
Fr. It's as if it's her story, and it gives me chills
How she seems to be able to go to that place and still hold it together to sing is beyond me. And not just sing, but like kill it, is just….I mean damn.
I feel like she was totally robbed out of best actress...
John Szczotka she's good but Cynthia Ervivo deserved it as much as she would have it (although I'm a bigger waitress fan than tcp)
you said it...
It was a very competitive year.
@@rk9630 that will racist
The vulnerability in her voice gives her rendition more expression and thus more captivating.
The only version that could literally make me cry. Shes so good 😭
I recently saw Waitress and this musical is amazing and Jessie put on a spectacular and emotional performance.
I want to be Jessie Mueller when I grow up. Or else marry her.
literally me about all my idols
Lausanne28 are you nutz?
Lausanne28 at least she has the guts to show her face, babe
Neve Sargeant I think the person u were talking to deleted their comment, what did they say?
wolffy_moon 17022015 can’t even remember anymore. Sorry, darl
Okay so I heard Sara's version first right, and I was absolutely sold, okay, so I never thought I'd love another version. I stand perfectly corrected. This was nothing short of amazing.
It is so heartbreaking and lovely and I wish Adrienne Shelly was alive to hear it.
ive some how forgotten how much i love waitress *and* jessie mueller... until now ✧ ✧ ✧
Wow!!!! Didn't think anyone could nail it as good, if not better then Sarah. But dang girl, your emotions and those crazy pipes of yours. You just shook my soul. This is my song. And you blow me away!
Jessie has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and what an actress.
This gave me chills, oh my God, I really thought that once that I heard Sara sang this Jessie wouldn't sound amazing, but God, I was wrong, she is incredible.
Please don’t use the Lord’s name in vain
I also had the honor of seeing this wonderful show last week, and Jessie sang this with SO MUCH emotion and vocal power that I was blown away. A true STAR.
she’s always going to be the best jenna and you can’t change my mind
I cant stop myself from watching it over and over again. The emotion in her voice and acting is enchanting that it's hard for me to not buy a ticket to New York and watch it on Broadway...if it's still there.
She's gotten so much amazingly better since the A.R.T. tryout cannot wait to see this again next Tuesday ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
she is amazing. I can't get enough
Did you see her sing this song on the Tonys Awards show last night (June 12th)? Amazing! Absolutely amazing. I have played it over and over and over. It was even better than this recording. This is pure soul music!
She emotes like a pro!
um that's because she is a pro? you don't get this kind of broadway role unless you are at the top of your professional ability!
you can just hear and see the emotion jessie puts into this song. this is my favorite song off of this soundtrack and jessie’s voice just makes it so much better. the lyrics are so real and relatable and it’s one of my favorite songs from any musical ever. i wish i could have seen this!
I'm pretty sure Jessie Mueller is well on her way to yet another, Tony Award! ❤️❤️❤️
+Nathan Graham pfffffft. I love Jessie! Hopefully she can make it on for next year then and win (: I want Phillipa to win! ❤️
+Nathan Graham +Nathan Graham Ugh, yes!! there were so many great shows and performances this year. I'm hoping Sandra Mae Frank maybe gets a nod as well, because she slayed DWSA.
I think DWSA's most likely acting nod is Krysta Rodriguez for best supporting, but who knows?
I'm floored. That was just insane, she is so gifted.
There's this magic moment at 3:43, when she looks directly at the camera, and it just pulls you right onto the stage. Amazing performance.
My favorite musical ever! Love.
This song broke my heart....what a song! I love Sara...she is a perfect Artist!
Reduces me to tears everytime. Jessie is just so vulnerable in this and she is just so perfect for this song
I honestly watch this everyday
so beautiful, what a wonderful singer
This is master class material on how to pull your audience and have them hanging on your every syllable.
The emotion in this song! I can't stop watching it. Jessie Mueller is mesmerising. I love it.
Lyrics:
It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
Jessie Mueller is a miracle of an actress. So soulful, beautiful, and bright.
Such an amazing actress. Focuses on storytelling before singing
I just can’t with this song. I well up at the opening chords. So many emotions in this song, it’s so underrated.
This has reduced me to a puddle on the floor.
You should've gone to the bathroom instead of peeing on yourself.
@@Lausanne28 💀
I have seen so many others actress singing this song, but jessy rocks in this performance....no one else can do it better than her...perfection.
If waitress had waited to open till next season Sara could have won a tony for best score. but it's impossible that she wins this year against Hamilton :( (sorry for my english!)
+Minghao Xu The score is literally everything it has going for it. Lol. I saw it in September, and the music outshines every other aspect of the show.
+Bret Brill I think it will definitely go to Hamilton. I can't wait for the Tony Awards. I hope Jess performs this song or they do a medley.
Agreed. Too bad it couldn't open up after June!
+Violetta Sele Hamiton is all about its score
Saw Waitress yesterday, and I have to say that this song made me cry, and I do not cry very often. Imagine this recording, except with 100x the emotion. That's how she performed it yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic. I swear if this musical doesn't win a Tony or two I'll be very upset and surprised.
Such a gorgeous song.
This choked me up. So heartfelt.
Her voice is stunning! I'm trying to decide if I should plan a trip to New York just to see this show! That note at 1:25 gah! She sounds like a bird lol
It's worth it. The play is amazing.
+Sammi MacDonald go!! I just watched it last night oh my tears and laughter so much emotion, amazing score and cast & Jessie Mueller, wow, I'm just in awe.
Do it! Just went on Saturday and it was unbelievable
Do it. I didn't go when I was there back in May and I regret it. New York is so worth it.
Dee Joy true on the bird note!
Brilliant 💛🎶 her ability to empathize in this song is fabulous 🌹 she got a magnificent singing technique. Love this 🙏🏻♥️
I went to ART where this was being performed before it went to Broadway and this moment was so powerful to see.
Logan Stommel Hamilton is a great show but Waitress (and the other shows) deserved to have some attention as well
Her performance is just so real and believable, just breathe taking!!!!!!
