Dr. K's defense of ayurveda in that podcast was the most impressive defense I have ever heard. It was eloquent, sophisticated, and sounded legitimate because he is credentialed medical practitioner of Indian origin.
Also that podcast was the most nuanced discussion on the topic where no one was trying to win.
If it wasn't for Dr. Mike's ability to think on his feet and challenge Dr. K, that podcast could have pushed so many English speaking educated people to feel more validated in using ayurveda.
Having said that, Dr. K many times clarifed that he isn't defender of the practice and agrees on ayurveda having major flaws. Only because Dr. Mike was taking a strong stand on one side, Dr. K had to take a stronger stand on the other side just for the sake of having a healthy discussion. Dr. K was eloquently presenting the arguments on behalf of the ayurvedic community, not necessarily believing in them himself fully. Being devils advocate.

The whole debate about Ayurveda VS modern medicine is unnecessary. If you zoom out on the timeline you can see that Ayurveda is what we had during the olden days. We didn't know about Germ theory, the immune system, and many more things during that time. Science or whatever you call it is not that developed and they did their best with whatever understanding they had during those times. With time our understanding of the human body improved, and related science also improved. Ideally, we should all move to a more advanced understanding that is Modern medicine. Ayurveda people had very good intentions and they tried their best to understand the human body and no hate to Ayurveda or our old rishi munis. I am sure if those great names from Ayurveda were alive today, they would tell people to switch to Modern medicine. The problem is that Ayurveda becomes a part of culture and our ego and identity and when people are running high on emotion they cannot think rationally. I can proudly say that we had Ayurveda, just like I can proudly say that our king used to have great swords, great weapons, and great armor, but all of them are now in the Museum with full respect and I am grateful for that and it's a great part of our history. Just because those weapons are part of our culture, tradition, and history doesn't mean that we will still use them! Do we want our soldiers to use swords on border patrol? Of course not because we have better weapons, we have efficient weapons. Similarly, Ayurveda has a place in history now. We should keep our Ego, and identity aside because it's a matter of people's life.

Dr Mike seems to be remarkably patient and calm in offering his skepticism. I doubt I could keep my calm if I were in his place, I could feel my rage build up with the ill-informed claims he was making, as a student of microbiology I'd have erupted the moment he claimed ancient Indians knew about microbiology because they supposedly didn't use the same hand to eat and clean their butt (which oversimplified, given the cultural diversity of this country, and possibly anachronistic given that he seems to be projecting a custom of modern Indians onto ancient Indians, does he have any source to cite saying medieval Indians let alone people 2000 years ago were doing this). I get why actual academics in the relevant subject almost never do public debates with these types, it's terrible for blood pressure and almost always a spectacle where you'd have to calmly explain them about their misconceptions only for them to still remain utterly unconvinced accusing you of stuff like being close minded or biased, not realising their claims are not even on the same plane as that of current science on the subject to give open minded consideration to, you don't change the opinion of the opposing debator, in the end you have to play to the gallery to sway the public watching in hope that some of them do change their views, and most academics don't tend to be charismatic orators. Actual scientific debate happens in journals and letters, not podcasts or public debates.

I believe that the people here including Pranav seem to have largely misunderstood Dr. K's stance. He never supports Ayurveda or its use as it is blindly used in India. His stance in the podcast is of a person advocating research into some of the interesting ideas of eastern medicine. I think he did not support his statements well enough in certain cases because he knows most of it has no evidence. Several times in the podcast he does mention that he does not support Ayurveda and points out the issues with it as well. The entire podcast is "Debating the value of Eastern Medicine". The important thing to note is it says "value" not advocating the use of eastern medicine. Dr. K finds certain aspects of Ayurvedic medicine interesting and advocates the research of these aspects to further our understanding of medicine. It is important to note that the practitioners did not have a lot of ethical barriers that exist today and were able to do things (dissections, administration of various medicines etc) we cannot currently and the effects have been recorded albeit not in detail or in a quantitative manner. As someone who has done research (not medical) I understand the curiosity (not claiming authority). The thing I got from the podcast is that we should not dismiss every idea from Ayurveda as some of it can be useful (once the idea is tested using modern methods and produces sufficient quantitative evidence) but also approach the idea from the perspective of a skeptic. The research should be to take a promising idea and try to disprove it.

I want everyone to watch that entire podcast which runs into around 2 hours. The fact of the matter is that Dr. K (as many people here are suggesting without watching the podcast) never said that Ayurveda is better or can replace modern medicine.
What Dr. K is saying is that just because of some quacks or questionable claims, people should not entirely dismiss an entire system of medicine which often has helped millions of people survive and treat problems for thousands of years.
He himself acknowledges and gives examples where Ayurveda is completely wrong, for example the use of heavy metals. But he also gives an example of mindfulness and 9ther forms of meditations which were entirely rejected by science in the early 40s and 50s as quackery. It was only after the invention of MRI and brain scanning technology that it was scientifically proven that meditation does help.
His core argument is that Ayurveda should not be rejected outright, but should be used to complement modern medicine by tailoring according to the needs of the patient.

You make a good point about the original use of the term "allopathy". Maybe a better term for that would be "Traditional European Medicine" lol. It is interesting because in the USA, chiropractic has somewhat of a privileged position (government liscencing of practitioners, etc). This is from what I understand in part because despite being a psudoscince, the early chiropractors did have a bit of a more scientific outlook on medicine than some of the prevailing quack doctors of that era in the united states. To this day chiropractic is somewhat integrated into our medical system and there is a divide in the field between more "evidence based" chiropractors and ones who are fully on the side of their traditional vitalist views (who often also spread nonsense about vaccines etc)

It may work for you because you have strong digestive system or because you are not sensitive enough to feel any uneasiness in the body due to the food. Now you are asking why people are asking why people are not using science. Well science allows only verified and proven results to be discussed. Now no ody has researched on food combination so far because they don't have theories around it or may be they don't have equipments or systems that can measure the effect. That doesn't mean it proves that ' food combination doesn't not matter'. It simply means its not tested. This is the typical bias of so called scientific thinkers that what's not proven is proven not to exist.

For me this was a classic example of “Don’t believe/support everything that someone says just because you like other stuff that he has said”.
I have really liked Dr. K ever since I first saw him. Heck I purchased the Dr. K guide to mental health, with my first pay cheque. But this podcast really put me off. I really respected Dr. Mike’s scepticism and he got me to subscribe after this. This is not to say that I won’t be watching Dr. K anymore. He still is in my opinion a pretty good resource for mental health. While I would not stand for Ayurveda over Allopathy in almost all spheres, I feel his blend of eastern and western thought just fits in my world view of mental health.
Also like how Dr. K is atleast sceptic about some of Ayurveda and his beliefs don’t come in the way of his practice. He is practical about it, it seems.
If anything the podcast has made me a little more mature about who to believe and how much to believe. (PS: It is not necessary to go all in, one can discern what to take up, ofcourse it should not b e self contradictory and hypocritical)

Alternative medicine revolves around emotional, sentimental, and knee-jerk reaction and that's the most prominent thing you will observe in all people to trust and it advocate for them.
The Islamic alt. medicine which include Persian, Arab and South Asian generally called Tib-i-Nabawi or Hikmat has also been influenced by Greek and Indian medicine and in South Asia gets specifically Ayurvedic in nature. It also bases itself on the Greek 5 humors theory which something Avicenna (Abu Sina) also subscribed to or supported.
Needless to say the unexplored herbal component of it paired with rigorous double blind testing can be tapped into as R&D for developing modern medicines. The rest is just bunkum.

Every society has evolved a medical tradition that tries to cure local diseases using local beliefs and locally found source material. I wish the Indian government had followed in the footsteps of the Chinese. First they archived all the traditional chinese medical textbooks. This made it easy to search for diseases and prescribed cure. Next, and most importantly, they began a systematic scientific evaluation of the medical prescription. And the last step, they tried to isolate the active ingredient of the medicine using modern methods. This was how the Chinese found a new cure for malaria, artemisinin, and they were awarded the 2015 Nobel prize for physiology. Although this prize is awarded to a specific person, we should also recognize the underlying governmental support for such research work. The study of ayurveda would have made more sense this way. If only ... The most surprising thing is that all this research was done during the chaos of Chinese cultural revolution. I would like to request Pranav to make a video about the story behind the discovery of artemisinin and how India can do something similar with their traditional medical knowledge.

Tbh, after I watched Dr. Mike and Dr. K my impression was, that Dr. K just argued for more research to be done on Ayurveda. Not that he favors Ayurveda to Western Medicine. He explicitly says the problem of Eastern Medicine is that it's not critically checked / studied. He also said that he regularily warns western practicioners of Ayurveda about the problems of Ayurveda.
I think Dr. K is pushed into "defending" (rather explaining some interesting things about) Ayurveda because he argues: there might be something to Ayurveda. Let's please check it with scientific studies and not just throw it away because there aren't good studies yet.

Religions like Hinduism and those practiced in early Egypt are not mere custom and traditions but are often associated with philosophy. So indirectly you called all those bullish.t. The 2-3 cases a month in Dr. Lavekar’s clinic is definitely an understatement. Many patients do not disclose past use of Ayurveda/homeopathy as they think that the doctors are biased towards alternate medicine (as many are vocally against using them). I know this from firsthand experience where my parents did not disclose their past use of ayurvedic medicines when suffering from liver injury and just left it to the physician to treat them despite it. They staunchly believe that doctors discourage use of Ayurveda as they see it as competition (facepalm, I know). This is despite us showing them enough scientific evidence & ethical issues with Ayurveda.. they’re just brainwashed, I feel

RCT is very good at eliminating bias factor. Ayurveda stipulates that bias in inherent to treatment. In practice (from what i saw in this vid and the podcast) ayurveda does try to extrapolate with the theory of dosh and such. So why dont we do a RCT by eliminating all bias except the one the treatment claims(I know there may be very specific conditions, but I am talking about the treatments claimed to be a bit general). So lets say a treatment T1 works for disease D1 on people with dosh A, then we can test these combos
No T1 no D1 on Mix Dosh
No T1 on D1 on Mix Dosh
T1 on no D1 Mix Dosh
T1 on D1 on Mix Dosh
    T1 on D1 on Dosh A
    T1 on no D1 on Dosh A
    No T1 on D1 on Dosh A
No T1 on no D1 on Dosh A
I mean normally RCTs already test with a bias of having the dieseas no? Why not add one more to it.
Ofc the no. of groups required will grow exponentially with respect to the no. of biases factored. But I think adding 2-3 biases could still be feasible.
Ofc for this to produce accurate results, we need unbiased researchers, so in that fact, even I won't trust Ayush's research on this.

I LOVE AYURVEDA and Tibetan medicine 💊 as a woman because unfortunately, women get MISDIAGNOSED A LOT by medicine doctors everywhere in the world. My mother got HIGH BP and the doctor recommended her the BP medicine (the smallest one was no more available in the market. I guess they want people to be addicted to it). She told the doctor, she can manage the BP and if possible, she wouldn't like to eat the whole medicine. The doctor said, she can start by eating half. A very nice tibetan doctor she used to go to (for physiotherapy) asked her if she was eating any medications. She said yes and then he checked her BP. IT WAS VERY LOW. He said "you don't need it". He didn't insist that she defy the doctor but simply asked her to eat it after her next appointment with him. Everytime he checked, her BP was low. He recommended that she give up the medicine and changed her diet. IT WORKED! MY MOTHER DOES NOT TAKE MEDS and she is very healthy. Also, my father's gastrointestinal issues got a lot better after his meds.
PS : I DO HATE LALA RAMDEV...AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM

    • @antojosefernandez
      @antojosefernandez 4 месяца назад +1

From your anecdote, isnt the issue a problem of poor medical care standards rather than the medicine itself. You mentioned your mother was misdiagnosed and was prescribed unnecessary medications. She recovered when the unnecessary medications were removed. How can you attribute her health to an alternative medicine. How do you even know whether it even works for everyone.

    • @valley-girl
      @valley-girl 4 месяца назад

@@antojosefernandez Most doctors would prescribe the same medicine because my mother did have high bp. What they wouldn't do...is HELP HER MANAGE THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE instead of dealing with the aftermath. They just don't know what to do with a patient who has always had low BP her entire life and now has HIGH BP problems. Most doctors would prescribe the same medicine and it wouldn't be considered "malpractice".
What really helped her manage anxiety and BP... and take it out from its root was not medicine but yoga (80%) and going to the tibetan doctor (20%).
Now, I have soo many doctors in my extended family ranging from cancer specialists to eye doctor to dentists...
I ain't going to alternative medicine if I get cancer..
But even if 10% of people are helped like my mother, its a large number of people.
Another example is my mummy giving me ajwain and one other thing (I don't know its name) for period pains. I get mild period pains and the doctors tell you that YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE PAIN KILLERS for that. There's not much medicine can do here. Now, it irritated me for 13 years of life and reduced my ability to do daily tasks until I tried this basic ayurvedic or home remedy reluctantly (me, being the educated person just wouldn't take it). It worked for my period pains and mom said ...just like the doctor "talking to you is like talking to a person who doesn't have an open mind".
Now, many people get period pains and severe period pains are unlikely to be solved like that but if it can make life better for even 10%... There are absolutely zero side effects of it.
The point is...medicine vs ayurveda isn't a war. This isn't about choosing sides. We should keep an open mind.

    • @Goldenbirdchirp
