It was not leaking, but the chrome plating was all that was holding it together. So I had to buy the p trap kit, some gaskets, and the tools to put it all back together.

Baking soda and vinegar is exactly how I unclog drains in my house. If I could add one suggestion - about 45 minutes after the vinegar dissipates, pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. It'll clear any remaining baking soda and leaves the drains just *chef's kiss*

Using a base and a acid is counter intuitive as they dilute each other and make a salt. Baking soda by itself is better as bases tend to break up stuff that gets caught in drains better which is why drain cleaners are basic. Also the best method to clean them is to always just clean the peatrap by removing it

Licensed master plumber here. If your bathroom sink backs up almost immediately when running water then 9/10 times it's because of build up on the pop-up drain. Quickest way to resolve this is to remove the pop-up and wipe clean, shine a flashlight down into the drain, you may have more debris in there. Since pop-up drain styles vary, look up how to remove your specific one on RUclips. You'll be surprised and disgusted with how much gunk and hair gets caught by the pop-up.

Use a plastic snake with those sharp teeth to get into the pipe, twist it around, pull it out, clean it off, repeat until it isn’t picking anything out of the drain anymore.
Had my bf do this to our drain because he has long hair. Our sink actually drains fast now

I give an A for effort but that won't get rid of the problem. The issue with bathroom drains is the combination of hairs, soaps and oils from The body. That mixture won't get rid of all of them. Just the oils and some soap. Best to remove the pop-up from both drains. Look up how to install or remove a pop-up assembly and you'll know how simple it is. Tub drains are a little harder to clear out but can be done with your hands. A zip it is a great tool for people at home if you don't want to take anything apart. Although the tub drain you will have to take the pop up off which usually just unscrews or pops out. This method shown though is a good way to get rid of smells from you drains as well as your washer machine.

usually this happens to sinks with a stopper that is lever operated (a stick in the back of the faucet) because it requires cross bars under the stopper for it to sit on, and those crossbars are so good at collecting hair.
just go under the vanity, unclip the operating lever and unscrew the cap, take out the stopper and use a tweezer to take out the chunk of hair and put everything back together.

If you wash the baking soda into the clog with a couple spashes of water, then let it sit for a few min before adding the vinegar, the reaction will loosen the clog far better. I'd also suggest starting with buying a plastic drain snake to pull out hair and cotton buildup.

This is better on your pipes too! Liquid PLUMBR or Drano will work all the time the first time but, they’re hell on your pipes. They cause CVS and ABS to deteriorate faster. Depending on where you are too, it’s not good for the septic system.

Tape off the hole on the side and use a plunger. I also buy the drain-O stuff

Air hose for a fish tank connected to a can of duster works great. Get that hose as far as it'll go down, fill the sink with water, give the can a few toots and the clog blows away.

I love to boil the vinegar in my teapot to decalcify, then do this in my sinks/shower drain!

This is great advice for people who are not plumbers or all that. But if you have a wrench (or just strong hands) you can also just unscrew the syphon under the sink and clean all the debris inside that way. Give it a little wash and screw it back in- good as new 🙂

You can just use the vinegar. It works better because the acid isn't neutralized. The bubbling action isn't doing much.

  • @Cookiefac

To make it work extra well, take a large boiling pot of water and dump it down the drain after you've let the mixture sit in it

Baking soda is a base while vinegar is an acid, their chemical reaction produces water with a tiny amount of salt in it, not a fat destroying drain cleaner.

The bicarb soda and vinegar soaking in the drain won’t really do much. The initial reaction might help clear things up a bit, but once the resection is done the pH is neutral and has no benefit over water.

I always use a drain snake. You can get them on Amazon for cheap and they work like a charm. It’s super satisfying seeing all the hair and gunk come out of your drain.
