My 5yo Zeke has a 16” Ramones that he’s had for a couple years, and his new Commencal Meta HT 20 dirt will be here in April...hopefully! Thanks for sharing this video and for spreading the stoke!
We got my son a specialized rip rock in kindergarten, but it needed brake/gearing/shifter upgrades to be truly trail competent. In third grade he rides a Rocky Mountain Reaper... it’s basically a mini Altitude or Slayer.
Thank you for making this video! My son is riding a Cannondale 10” right now and I’m trying to decide what to get him next. He’s very motivated to ride and has been off training wheels for a year. He is 3ft 4in right now and his current bike seat hight is at 19inches.
Just picked up a 24 for my son. His Cannondale cujo 24 was getting pretty beat up and he was not ready for a 26, so we got another 24 and choose the commencal this time. My cousin had two and one of his kids outgrew one of them so we got a steal we couldn't pass on!
I am undecided between this Ramones and the Specialized RipRock 20. I think this Ramones is 3 pounds heavier than the RipRock. Do you have any comments on that?
What other options are there for that gearset? In this price range everything comes with gripshit. I replaced my kids with a SL-TX30 because this was the only other six speed I could find at the time. I also understand why they don't want to put this on a bike - it isn't "sexy" or nice. But it is functional. Easy and cheap to swap out with the added benefit of teaching to ride one handed till they are big enough.
As I mentioned in another comment, I too was a little hesitant to see Revoshift (maybe flashbacks from my personal experience with gripshift from the early 90s?) but pumped to see him have zero issues with shifting.
my kids prefer gripshift to rapid fire style or the top-mounted double-thumb shifter options. i've heard of others having difficulties with grip shift, too, but hasn't been an issue here.
My kids seem to never have the forearm strength to get them to shift unless I constantly change out cables/housing. I switched my 6 year old's bike to thumb/trigger and he was ecstatic.
From experience with my son: The grip shift is crap for little fingers; upgrade to thumb shift. Also, that front chainring is way to big for even slight climbs; that gearing will only work on the sidewalk or the pump track.
I too was initially skeptical of the Revoshift since Max's hands are smaller for his age, but was pleasantly surprised to see Max have ZERO issues with shifting once he figured out which gear he needed to be in depending on the slope.
opposite experience w/ my sons. they preferred grip shift to rapid fire-style or that top-mounted double thumb shifter (forget name/model, but it's been recommended in other places). they were small riders, too. they're on different bikes but gearing is also similar to commencal and they don't have any issue on climbs. if anything they often spin out all the time. we're not climbing trails where a 30/50t is a life saver though.
Do you have a pint-sized shredder in your life? What do they ride and what tweaks have you had to make to their bikes?
I bought my 6 year old a Prevelo Zulu 3 and it was dialed right out of the box! He loves it.

Little late, but: 12" Commencal Ramones for our little girls! 🙌
I bought the Trek Roscoe 20inch kids bike. Also a beast.
Shares so many features with my son's Scott Roxter. Great first geared bike and he loves it
Adorable AND informative. I dig it.
my son has last years and hes loved it. i agree with the hub engagment clunk i noticed the same thing.
Hell yeah! I can get over the hub noise, when the kids are older then they can get a high engagement hub right?! ;)

@@gregcavanaugh6259 Exactly same experience here.
Better and in stock -> STP 20 LIV 2021
those are great bikes.
Great but imagine attempting to ride a bike 50%+ of your body weight…
