    Ah, that wonderful crawl up the mountain to the lodge and the last neverending bit on the sand! Always best to time that spot for morning, if possible. That whole segment of trail is really beautiful, especially the viewpoint over the Zigzag River with Mississippi Head in the background and the mountain peak behind it (also all the waterfalls you can see along there).

    So I watch your posts attentively every day & appreciate 'going along with you'. I'm returning to hiking in middle age after a chest cancer & 2 surgeries & am just grateful to be in the woods. I learn from you regularly & am amazed that you can pound out 30 mile days. I'm inspired by watching you & I'm sure I'm not alone. Happy Hiking!!

    You should get a topical antibiotic for the feet. You don't want it on your hands which can happen. Extra pair of socks to swap out and hand wash and dry daily.

    It’s really good luck to see Mt. Hood without clouds. I hope you were able to fill up at the buffet. Happy to see you’re still with Sonic. You two make a great pair.

      i think the exterior scenes were filmed there…and mt. hood and glacier. i believe some of the interior was modeled after a colorado hotel where they built a replica on a sound stage in london… at least that’s what i read years ago…

    Good morning, Juliane. Beautiful forest today. I hate to walk in sand. You kinda have to use different muscles and I used to end up sore. You are always such a fast hiker, but when food is nearby, you really zoom, zoom up the trail. Lol. Glad you switched back to your hiking shoes. I agree with you that it is safer, though not so good for the foot ailment. Hope you had a good feed at the buffet and left contented and fueled up. Looking forward to seeing the falls in the morning. Take care, Juliane. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

    I really love you youngins. I remember long miles in my youth. At almost 60 I was only able to maintain 10-12 miles a day (10hrs) in the Goat Rocks in WA (28 JULY 2 AUGUST). Love watching y’all! Wishing you continued good journeys

    You should get some Povidone-iodine to treat the problem on your feet. If you can't find it at a drug store go to a veterinarian. Sometimes called "surg-prep". This is what is used before surgeries and is also used on animals to kill bacteria, fungus, etc. As a side benefit: it can be used to purify water with 4 drops per liter and wait half an hour. Please don't worry about iodine poisoning as 1. Most people are iodine deficient and 2: you would need to drink a lot to be poisoned. It is also good for initial antibiotic on cuts and scrapes.

    Hope your lunch buffet was delicious. You didn't say much about it. Curious if your weight stays pretty consistent on these through hikes. Do you have any idea how many calories you consume on an average day and how many you burn? Some hikers worry about weight loss. Maybe you can discuss this topic in one of your upcoming videos.

    I use athlete’s foot medicine between the 2 smallest toes, because that is where they always develop cuts. It stings a little, but is what the vet always tells me to use on cats when they get ringworm next to their eyes, and the cats survive with no eye damage so I know it’s safe on those open cuts. And the cuts heal.

      Povidone-iodine works for me wonderfully, is very cheap, used on animals, has other uses for hikers (purifying water), kills bacteria, fungus (yes works on foot fungus and jock itch). For chafing use zinc oxide.

    I am very familiar with the sandy approach to the lodge! I’ve done the timberline trail 1.5x in the previous years and will be heading out there again this month. The slog up to the lodge is one of the biggest teases. The lodge looks so close but feels so far away because of how difficult the climb is. Phew!

    Food and trail magic seem to have this gravitational pull on you! 😂 But the calories you burn I don’t think it’s smart to pass by the chance to get fully fueled. The views today were very nice. That looks like it’s a great ski resort in Winter. I think you have a fire detour coming up before Cascade Locks where you will enter Washington. R end of August goal is coming into clear focus and you might even be early. Such joy and sadness both to be finished. Take care of those feet, the military makes soldiers on long marches change socks and use foot powder. I know you don’t want to carry more weight but a couple extra pair of socks and foot powder is worth it. That problem can go bad pretty quickly so “nip it in the bud” :)

      Last year I hiked that section in mid July, and they still had a run and chair open for skiing and snowboarding.

    • @memathews
      @memathews 28 дней назад

      Yes, skiing is year-around on Mt Hood, thanks to a big snowfield around 8,000' elevation. There's a few weeks of shutdown while they close the upper lift for winter and the lower lifts for the winter season. It snows an average of 500 inches a year at the lodge and regularly piles up between 12-20 get each winter.

    Roadrunner here's a thought. When you take a long bath your hands and bottom of feet become pitted and prune like. Therefore when your feet are wet from water and sweat when your hiking all day that causes pitted skin under your feet. Be safe and have fun!

    If your feet hurt wash some really really good or ever put some put some petroleum jelly on them put plastic bags and put a rubber band around them and put your socks on and sleep and I'm overnight and I'll be fine in the morning or continue until they're healed
