  • During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomic bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, the first on August 6, 1945 and the second on August 9, 1945. These two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.
    For six months before the atomic bombings, the United States intensely fire-bombed 67 Japanese cities. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, 1945. The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum. By executive order of President Harry S. Truman, the U.S. dropped the nuclear weapon "Little Boy" on the city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed by the detonation of "Fat Man" over Nagasaki on August 9.
    Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000--166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000--80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Hiroshima prefectural health department estimates that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. In a US estimate of the total immediate and short term cause of death, 15--20% died from radiation sickness, 20--30% from flash burns, and 50--60% from other injuries, compounded by illness. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians.

    Even today it's still pretty amazing that it took only one single bomb to level and destroy that whole area of Hiroshima, but the weird thing is that the damage done to Hiroshima and Nagasaki is nothing compared to the kind of damage that today's nuclear weapons can cause. hell today's nukes are so powerful that they can make what happened to Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like a metaphorical picnic.

    They say the handful of buildings that survived the blasts were ones that were made to be earthquake resistant. Usually constructed of reinforced concrete, and other sturdy materials.

      @@OneVoiceMore The streets did not vaporize and the entire area depicted was filled with several feet of rubble. You can watch actual footage of the aftermath and it shows the big building with the dome top filmed by army soldiers walking among the rubble. All the bridge’s including the bridge that was the target for the bomb where still standing and looked relatively undamaged. The bomb had the power to vaporize concrete if it wasn’t detonated 5000 meters above the surface and was instead detonated on the target.

      Japanese industry was very decentralized and handled by every civilian contributing. you really couldnt attack their war industry without attacking civilians. If it werent nukes it would have been firebombing and invasion which would have been more suffering over a larger scale and longer drawn out time period.

      Because they were made out of concrete and not out of some wood and cardboard. Concrete is a more stable and stronger material that can partly survive a atomic bomb. Every shelter or vault would be build out of thick concrete, so it can stand the power of a big explosion.

      Roy Piper The city was larger than what's shown on the video. The T Bridge was the aiming point for the bomb. On this video it shows the bridge at the top near the window. There was more of the city that was north of the T Bridge. In Hiroshima everything in a 3 mile radius was destroyed or burned to the ground.

      Jonathan Feltham why didn't they stop after that? They werent they were going to keep pushing the issue. USA got tired of their bullshit and put a stop to it. So the Chinese gov cared a lot less about their people than the US armed forces.

    • @jonathanfeltham2790
      @jonathanfeltham2790 7 лет назад

      You mean why the Japanese did not stop after that? Well, long before the A-bomb were launched the Japanese wanted to negociate redition.. passing by the Russian to negociate with the US, but the US ignored it.. ( The Japanese were ok to surrender but if the emperor could stay emperor of Japan..) The US refused.. but guess what? After the A bomb the US have accepted the condition.. The Emperor would stay on his throne...
      The only reason they have used the A bomb was to prepare the after war.. showing the power of the US military to the Russian who would become the US "enemy" during the cold war directly after WW2...

    • @cainpoe
      @cainpoe 7 лет назад

      Jonathan Feltham so USA got china out the way just in case a 3rd world war started and Russia and China would of been at full capacity. Obviously Russia couldn't and wouldn't want to go one on one with Murica. So it was needed to put China down and let other commies know don't fuck with USA

The japanese civilian population SUPPORTED emperor hirohito in going to war with the U.S. In supporting hirohito they made themselves LEGITMENT MILITARY TARGETS.
