- Wishful Thinking - Hiroshima
On October 30th 1961 the USSR carried out the first and only test of the AN602 bomb, more commonly known in the West as the 'Tsar Bomba', originally planned a 100 megaton device, the design used in the test was eventually limited to 50MT. The 27 tonne, 8 metre bomb produced a fireball 5 miles across and a mushroom cloud 42 miles high, going beyond the stratosphere.
The test ended the one-upmanship between the USA and the USSR and in 1963 they signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty, effectively ending the era of open air nuclear testing.

You're welcome man, thank you for watching it.
My neighbour as a child, Setsuko Thurlow, was a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. I remember her and her husband's beautifully tended Japanese garden, their kindness and cheerfulness, and how our families would exchange vegetables from each of our patches in the summer and autumn. I found out about Mrs. Thurlow's past when she briefly touched on it during a neighbourhood gathering. Later, she received the Nobel Prize for her anti-nuclear weapons activism. My family, who are from Hong Kong, suffered greatly during the Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, we've never held any animosity towards Japanese people. Humanity is too small and we have too much in common to dwell on the mistakes of our past, thereby risking their repeat. We should always remember the past, but not let that memory turn to hate. All I can say is that war and death breeds further hatred, and we all become mad when we lose our sense of humanity. I hope for all our sakes the present madness in Ukraine doesn't end us all

@@countsmyth yep, late August 2020
Could be wrong but I always assumed the Tsar bomb was more of a stunt and "proof" of Soviet scientific genius than a practical weapon of war. I'm not even sure they could develop a delivery system for the weapon especially since ICBMs and ultimately multiple-warhead missiles would come to dominate both sides of the Cold War.

Last time I was this early, the USSR was still together.
In 1961 there were some signs of the downfall. In 1956,10 days after Khrushchev ruled the country and start insulting Stalin's legacy, a uprising went off in Tiflis, Gruzia. In 1957, Khrushchev start the "coming back progress" for minor ethnics that be moved violently in the late of WW2 to their old hometown, but the fact is this action increased the conflicts between the minor and the Russian (because the Russian moved to the old house and farm of the minor and used them when the minor was moving), and facilities in a lot of villages in Central Asia were thown away. From 1957, after decades without any great economic crysis, the economy of USSR was slowly go down, started with its food production, because of some shitty policies of Khrushchev. From 1961 to its ending, USSR became more and more depent on oil and gas, and had to import cereals from its allies and even the West, although it was one of the most mechanized food production system in the world. What a weird.

I may be wrong here, but I think that the pilots were told they had a 50/50 chance of returning, so that salute, at least to me, is just a very powerful image.
I think it was lower than that, because even with the tsar Bomba being dropped from so high and it's parachute giving them more time, it might still not have been enough time to leave the blast zone, but they made it out, thankfully
They were initially told they would not survive, then when they reduced the yield I think they said 20% chance. The point being the pilots were willing to die for their countries pride.
@@tomsoki5738 Besides, their plane and them would dissolve into particles too small to be seen by the naked eye in a flash, you wouldn't feel anything, at most maybe a small pinch and extreme heat for like 2 miliseconds, and their plane would crash, killing anyone left near-instantly
No, they've been dropped with a little parachute, so pilot had enough time to pull the gas to full to escape.
And those planes have extra metal plates on the pilot's back to block hazard rays.
Pretty sure we wouldn't have footage of the flight if it killed them

@@05pittsd funny thing, strategic nukes are not meant to destroy the world. They are meant to wipe out enemy industry quickly to achieve victory faster than flying bombers over enemy territory. If a nuclear war had started the fallout would have subsided in a short time allowing people to live, but the unrest that would follow would change the entire world.
@@goforbroke4428 however we all know the mentality of many nations. If they fall they take as much with them as possible. Wouldn't doubt the largest nations having a a dead man switch that will just unleash their arsenal of missiles across the globe and some priority targets. The USSR had the Dead Hand and the US had the ERCS. In a simple form I believe it's there's no one left the computer will now take the final command use the entire nuclear and conventional arsenal. No this bomb was not dropped in the desert your confusing this for the trinity tests, it was dropped on a northern island. And if the US didn't drop the bombs 100,000 perhaps millions could have lost their lives defending the home islands from a joint allied invasion. Which included the soviets invading Hokaido and the US and Commonwealth forces attacking the southern islands.
I really liked the shots of the Soviet Railways (SZD) seeing as they were the main artery for the transport of the Soviet Nuclear arsenal.
The Soviets are kinda like a SD80MAC, powerful and gone but not forgotten!

Humanity went too far several decades prior to this. This test was a wake up to the world. I’m thankful that the world leaders were able to startle from their greed for power and corruption and realize that they were on the verge of ending history.
