gonna be honest....Ya gotta choose a side in the 90s. I was NOT a nintendo person growing up, I've only recently gotten into Mario, so this is THE PERFECT thing for people like me. I can actually be UNBIASED when I talk about this movie. Whereas with Sonic, sure I was a little bit biased, I grew up with Sonic, I loved Sonic, still love Sonic, first game was Unleashed incredible....Mario....I didn't really get into him until I got the switch. Late bloomer. I played Pokemon and Kingdom Hearts as a kid. So for ME to be like "wow this actually looks REALLY good" I don't know if that's good or bad yet lol. They want the general audience to be able to enjoy this like with Sonic so I think they're nailing that aspect if even I can get into this just by the trailer. Animation looks incredible. Especially for Illumination.
i love how seriously they portrayed Bowser. sure, there was a touch of comedy at the end of his portion of the trailer, but the trailer immediately established how powerful he is, how evil he is, and sets him up to be a serious villain. i expected them to make him like Robotnick in the Sonic films but i’m glad to see he’s more serious
Bowser (so far) is showing a great balance of being threatening, but still with a hint of that endearing goofiness that he's known for. Almost perfect if you ask me!
@@DonkeyBoyVids His goof is more apparent in his overall look. It's hard to take him 100% seriously when he's got stumpy limbs, bad posture and a gut (though looking again he's actually pretty buff). Bowser's always reminded me of a bulldog...and bulldog's are goofy looking, but also not something I'd want to mess with!
I couldn't help but notice he waited to blast the city until after Kamek moved all the penguins. Obviously if Bowser roasted a bunch of cute flightless birds to death, that might change the movies rating, but still.
Something that I really love that not many people are talking about is Kamek's voice. I love how it was done for the one line we got, and he was animated very well also.
I love how the kid just is like “oh cool a Mario movie” because he didn’t wait literal decades for this moment. May all your favourite properties be adapted in a timely fashion
Absolutely agreed. The chuckle and pure smug pride that just radiated from him was flawless representation and it makes me so eager to see how he is animated when Mario (or even his own minion) starts ticking him off like we see in certain other games. The one thing I wish we saw was a goomba. Dunno why, but the complete lack of them in the teaser trailer just felt...wrong.
The fact that you went into this expecting illuminations to 100% ruin it and came out fully on board says a lot about how good they did with this reveal.
Illumination has been an animation and art direction powerhouse since like 2010. Nobody has any doubts that an Illumination movie will look excellent visually. It’s in the writing and the story concepts and the voice direction where Illumination historically falls flat.
Honestly if they went for the Sunshine route with Bowser's voice I wouldn't be mad, I love that voice. Jack Black has absolutely nailed the voice tho, I wouldn't change it now
Agreed. I suspect that they refrained from adding more of a growl to it to ensure that you could understand what he's saying, and I think that's a good call to make for what is supposed to be, first and foremost, a kid's movie.
This made me realize how good Luigi's Manion 3 was, which was almost on par with its animation and expressions! That's really really impressive considering it was realtime 3D and not prerendered
@@mr.awesome6011 unrealistic to assume a fully asseted game could look this good with any level of consistency, but I think I agree for prerendered cutscenes!
Next Level Games’s animators are no exaggeration on par with pixar. Ive never seen another videogame with such expressive and fluid animation as luigi’s mansion 3.
What was even more impressive was that it was done by Next Level Games, which was actually kind of a third party company before being bought out by Nintendo.
It looks like a world 8 type area, with the lava and dead trees and castle and everything. So maybe it’s actually a scene from towards the end of the movie?🤔
I think we will get the donkey king movie first (if they don’t make Mario 2 where he goes to Hollywood or some shit). It saddens me because I am a lifelong Luigi’s mansion fan
@@everythinginquestion671 He looks like a scaredy cat which is definitely on brand for his character. That will smoothly translate to a spin-off Mansion movie.
I heard a very slight Brooklyn accent from Pratt’s Mario. My bet would be that Mario is from some version of our world, New York Italian-American and all. Complete with a big Italian family, all of whom are voiced by Charles Martinet with several variations of the classic Mario voice. That’s my prediction at least lol
I second that. The Brooklyn accent wasn't apparent the first time Pratt-Mario speaks, but it's there in his second line. And I'm totally fine with that approach because it does go back to Mario's roots.
Yea, agreed it had a very slight accent in the one line. His Mario voice actually kinda reminds me of Bradly Cooper's voice for Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, but with a much milder accent. I look forward to seeing some more to get a better idea of what I truly think of his performance. I need more than just a couple simple lines.
If Bowser is invading the ice kingdom at the beginning, that implies it's a separate place from the Mushroom Kingdom. That's great. I always liked the idea that the Mushroom Kingdom looked like what we saw in the first Super Mario Bros game, with environments consisting of brick roads, water zones, long bridges, tall mushroom platforms and castles. The NSMB series retconned it and made it seem like the Mushroom Kingdom had all kinds of different environments like deserts, ice, swamps, lava, etc, which never sat right with me. I mean, when Super Mario Bros 3 introduced all those environments for the first time, they were explicitly different neighboring kingdoms, not the one Princess Toadstool rules over. As for Mario being from Brooklyn, I always liked that origin story better than the Yoshi 's Island retcon. The idea of a fat, middle aged, overworked plumber accidentally stumbling upon a pipe and being transported to another world, and getting to become a hero, is just really heartwarming and cool. It fits the bizarre universe of Mario and makes you root for his success.
Maybe something like Super Mario Bros 3, which we have several lands or worlds, like, Grass Land, Desert Land, Ice Land, and each of them have its own king and stuff...
The Mario “canon” is all over the place. How can Mario have not been from the real world if he’s Italian? But yet Yoshi’s Island (SPOILERS) shows his parents in a mushroom house picking him up after the stork drops him and Luigi off.
We know Mario came from New Donk City, that was pretty obvious. That’s where he saved Pauline and was in a relationship with her, and it is probably also where he had a job as a construction worker in Wrecking Crew as well as being a plumber in Mario Bros. And I genuinely hope we see these things at the beginning, which seems likely since we know Foreman Spike is in this movie from the cast reveal as well as both Cranky AND Donkey Kong. I mean, what would Foreman Spike be doing in the Mushroom Kingdom? I guess maybe they could say he was looking to expand his construction business or something, but I hope it’s an origin story for Mario like Matt Patt predicted.
Yeah. Prolly a mild-grade isekai premise, with the Bros being stuck in the Kingdom (but separated) and Luigi suffering from Isekai Dueteroagonist Syndrome and having the shittier time for a while.
I like the idea that Donkey Kong is like this old frenemy of Mario’s and they go into this whole thing where they recap the original Donkey Kong in different ways.
I love the interpretation the designers took for the world, especially the koopas. Them being an organized army feels way more "warlike" than just an occasional one here and there like in the games (of coarse, the games didnt exactly have space for entire battalions). Even the shell like deign for helmets and the different types of shells designating rank is a really nice detail that we didnt get a lot in the games.
It reminds me a lot of how they were shown in the Mario & Luigi RPGs, like an organized army, but obviously, in both versions, this serie of games and the movie, there is some goofiness attached to some soldiers.
I'm actually surprised how good Jack Black sounds as Bowser. Mario is OK in comparison. The images look awesome. Actually gonna watch that, and hope it doesn't leave the same mark as the original Mario movie..
Im not going to hate on chris pratt because he is a genuine nice dude. Company's like to pick high profile actors so we should expect this in todays day and age. In the end I think everyone will still enjoy the movie. because we all know its not going to be some stinker.
I think Mario's the worst voice we've heard so far, but it's not terrible. Just painfully mediocre in a trailer of other pretty and really good voices.
It looks like the video game movie curse might finally be over. Detective Pikachu cracked the glass ceiling, Sonic spin dashed it into pieces. You know, I want Mario to have a good movie. He deserves it as much as The Blue Blur does. Super Smash Bro. movie when?!
Well here's something Arlo may not be aware of: We originally had an origin story for Mario and Luigi, they were plumbers from Brooklyn that found a warp zone into the Mushroom Kingdom. That stopped being a thing Mario 64 and onwards with the modern games. Could this movie be bringing back that origin storyline?
I honestly hope so. I also hope it's literally both Luigi and Mario working together. I love Mario, but I truly hope it is like the old show. Where Princess isn't some damsel in distress and the bros actually are together most of the time. Along with toad.
Yall acting like both of these couldn't be true. Look at Odyssey. He and Luigi were probably dropped off to their parents by the stork, grew up in New Donk City (which is obviously a stand in for New York), found the warp pipe that took them to The Mushroom Kingdom and then we know the rest.
I love how Mario is canonically an Italian living in Brooklyn who got transported to the mushroom kingdom. It’s been that way from the very start, and people are looking at this like “ew esekai” when it’s being directly faithful. Doesn’t make it good, but it’s faithful
Yeah, exactly. It makes sense for the confusion since most Mario media takes place *after* he fell from New York to Mushroom Kingdom and having an established life there, and no media has really acknowledged this after the live action movie so younger folks may not be aware
@@notmyrealname5268 That also makes much more sense when you factor in Yoshi's Island, which reveals that Mario and Luigi (and DK in the DS sequel) were from the world of the Mushroom Kingdom, Koopa, etc., originally. Which means that if they did really end up in real-world New York, something had to have happened that has never been mentioned that caused them to be warped to the real world and other messy shenanigans. Making the "New York" just be New Donk City just cleans things up so much.
Honestly the best part was seeing your nephews reaction to the trailer. Because if this movie is able to make the younger side of Mario's audience happy I think that's a success. It's not like Mario is a particularly deep franchise, so something simple and fun is great.
While I agree with it being simple and fun is enough, the fact the younger audience enjoys it doesn't mean much. Don't get me wrong but kids will usually be happy with just seeing colours flying on the screen, I know, I was a kid once. That's why it's the parent's responsibility to find content that is appropriate (so not brainless, cheap garbage)
I'm honestly extremely hyped to hear the soundtrack too. You have Brian Tyler, who's an amazing composer, collaborating with the legend Koji Kondo himself to make new arrangements of older Mario music. This movie is going to be amazing
I don't care if it's cliche, I love the idea of Mario being a regular guy from the real world. It's just so funny to me, that instead of a generic anime highschooler getting Isekai'd, it's an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. It's such goofy, bizarre lore, and I think that fits the weirdness of the Mario series perfectly. Also. Give us a Luigi's Mansion movie after this.
"dude, i just read this awesome isekai story! its called alice in wonderland!1!!!" seriously, when did every single story with a person going to another world become an "iSeKaI?" god i hate weebs...
My gosh Mario *is* isekai isn't it? Lmao I believe that's always been the backstory for him, the Brooklyn thing, since the original NES instruction manual. I genuinely like it too! Pratt sounds humdrum and everyman but said "what is this place" with such whimsy. I like it. I think it's gonna land. His New Yorker banter with Charlie Day is gonna be great.
Yeah it'd honestly be kinda disappointing if he didn't get there by falling down a sewer pipe in Brooklyn. Just, no live action. Make it a cartoon Brooklyn.
It's all argumentative. Mario is kind of vaguely explained. And it's changed a number of times. Hell....Mario was a villain in the early Donkey Kong games. The version of Mario that most people are now familiar with is the Italian accented Mario of the games for some time now.
@@tumultuousv Mario has been from Brooklyn since Mario Bros back in '81. All the cartoons from the 90s also have him being from Brooklyn. Even the Mario comics from that era have the same origin. 🤔
Your nephew’s reaction was actually adorable. It seems like he’s really excited about it which I think means that Illumination and Nintendo are totally reaching their target audience.
I was stoked, but even more so, I was excited to show it to my kids when I got home from work. My 14, 8 and 5 year old were all freaking out. That just made me over the moon.
My 9 year old who has been a huge Mario fan throughout the years was incredibly disappointed with Marios voice… I dont think he has fully been convinced by this movie yet and both my kids were instantly enthralled by the Sonic films as all the sonic characters made alot more sense historically.
@FizzleDrunk no, Mario's original accent was from Brooklyn, not the fake Italian accent from the games which is really just broken english, Mario's game voice was not intended for dialogue which is why Mario doesn't have real dialogue in the games, that little girl is Gen z so she doesn't know OG Mario and his OG voice, they don't know anything about the cartoons, but it's whatever the movie is going to be fine and the kids are going to love it anyways, The voice they're giving Mario is way better than the voice from the games, that would be way too intolable for a larger audience 😂
oh my god....Nintendo has a tall order to fill. They have us cynical adults who grew up with this and expecting our childhood dreams to be filled and then our jaded kids who have seen just about everything.
If you pay attention to the finer details of the composition and the animation, you can tell there is genuine talent behind this. It’s obvious we underestimated Illumination Studios.
They proved they had talent with the original despicable me, and that cut lorax song. The thing is that corporate knows they don't need to try for the general audience.
@@TheRallycore You're absolutely right, Nintendo, other than giving them a big budget, probably took an eye on them to make sure that they wouldn't be lazy, and the result is evident
It's not that we underestimate them, it's that we didn't expect them to actually *try* on it. It turns out they did, and we're all being pleasantly surprised.
Bowser's face being so iconic that your nephew instantly knew the trailer was about Mario just shows how universally appealing this will be. I also laughed like a loon at the snowball gag and the don't touch that jumpscare gag.
Something I didn't pick up on til seeing all these stills - and something Arlo will be hype on - is that every Koopa seems to be unique! Different heights and builds, different armor and personalities… this is cool.
That level of detail was something I really didn’t expect from Illumination, with how much they reuse background characters in their other films, so I am very pleasantly surprised to see that
Another thing that was mentioned in the Direct that I thought was really cool was that Koji Kondo was working with Illumination on the score. That means that there’ll likely be a lot of reorchestrated music from the games, and also that the general score will likely have that Mario feel that we’re used to!
Don’t quote me on this, but I think that Nintendo and Ilumination are going 50/50 on the budget so that probably made them more willing to invest more into it. Not to mention that this is a collaboration instead of a solo project and that tends to push those working to impress instead of settling with a “It’s good enough”
Its funny that announcing the voice actors so far ahead was actually a smart move, considering that we're so expecting of the idea of these voices coming out and being pleasantly surprised or already used to it like you said in the video is kind of interesting.
the visual direction and new designs for each character makes it easier for me to dissociate the characters from their usual voice and thus a lot easier to accept the voices everyone got here
As some others have pointed out, I like that we see Bowser seems genuinely imposing. It'd have been easy to make him a comedic, ineffectual villain. But here we see he's actually kind of badass. Also, like seeing the Koopa army here. I've always perceived Bowser as being, essentially, a militaristic tyrant, and here it shows.
He's always referred to as Koopa King or King Koopa and it's always been referred to as Bowser's Army, but we rarely see it done as an army. I think bit in Paper Mario Thousand Year Door where Bowser confronts Crump and Jr.'s bit in the Inside Story add-on were the only places where they use the soldiers that way.
It's not just Chris Pratt's regular voice. He's definitely putting on a Brooklyn accent. It's pretty noticeable near the end when he says "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come."
Okay, that reaction at the end was so wholesome. I can't wait to see my nephew's reaction since he freaking loves Mario. When he was a baby, I remember winning a little Mario and Yoshi plushie for him from a claw machine. My wife and I even got to go to Super Nintendo Land in July, so yeah, you could say my family is a little bit excited too. ^_^
@@Flowerz__ Man how could we not look hyped this looks amazing. If people can go crazy over a teaser for an amime about a guy with a chainsaw head... we can get crazy over Mario
@@Flowerz__ mario’s a huge franchise. People are obviously going to go nuts over a trailer that teases what might actually be a good movie. Let us be disappointed later if thats the case but for now let us be excited and hopeful.
I’m so excited since Toad’s Mario’s first friend in the mushroom world and it seems like he’ll be going on the adventure with the plumber. I sure hope he’s around the entire adventure since I’d love to see a Mario and toad adventure!
It's extremely faithful. I kinda love it. The vistas look amazing and it's insanely detailed. It puts the fear back in Bowser. He's that perfect mix of intimidating and self-pleased like in the RPGs. The fact they used the classic penguins for some reason is the hook that tells me they're really using the Mario property well. The penguins being in a serious war and the Toad freakout did feel the most like "generic kid movie" that Arlo criticises. I did get big Illumination vibes there. But, it also kinda feels like they'll have their own charm as the movie goes on. Personally, the word that came to my mind when Mario said "what is this place?" is *whimsy.* I feel like this movie will just be really fun and light and enjoyable, even if it feels a little tropey in parts.
The penguin battle scene reminded me of Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door where the enemies swarm Paper Mario and he just walks away and they don't even realize they're not attacking anything. That gag HAS been done in the games before.
I just don't want the belchy/fartiness of the minions. If they keep Toad and the mushroom people sincere and mildy slap-sticky, I'm happy. Did anyone notice Toad's backpack?
I love how each individual Koopa is different as well. One has an eye patch, another has should pads, some have spears, etc. Which makes sense. Seeing Bowser conquer a Kingdom is something I yearned for.
I liked that a lot too! It feels like even if the movie turns out to be no good, at least there will be plenty of fun details and Easter eggs, if the poster’s any indication.
@@Ciccigreen I concur! I hope the writing is up to snuff, but again it's the details of things that I love. It's as if whoever was in charge of designing Bowser's army knew on a more obscure, deeper level that each individual soldier probably has their own personality, ambition or personal reasons for joining Bowser's cause, even if it's all under the surface. I also can see how The invasion force's overall design resembles a lot of Bowser's country as we see in Mario Odyssey. Very Japan-inspired.
I absolutely LOVE eyepatch koopa. He was on for only a couple of seconds, but everything about his design was great. He had a scar on his face near his eye to show that he's seen plenty of combat. That expression of well contained excitement on his face spoke volumes about how he saw the situation. He *knew* the boss was about to get involved, and just how utterly screwed their opposition is, and he reveled in every second of it while maintaining the composure of an experienced soldier. The fact that I got *all* of that from a single 2 second screenshot is proof to me that the character designers know precisely what they are doing, and I'm 100% for it.
@@webbowser8834 Ya see? I am not too sure about the writing, but if within two-seconds like you said, it says everything we need to know that the designers intended, what they wanted to convey, and that they KNEW we would. That they trusted us enough to see that.
Mario was originally a plumber from Brooklyn, but fell into the mushroom kingdom through a mysterious warp pipe, presumably in the sewers after the events of the Mario bros arcade game. (The movie is going to take from old Mario lore)
Still bizarre this is the reality we live in: that Nintendo AND Illumination are actually trying to go hard at making a proper Mario film. Bowser's characterization, voice acting and menacing tone are all phenomenal, everyone's designs are great, the animation's spectacular and there's plenty of potential for the entire plot of the film to be more engaging than simply just Mario saving Peach from Bowser. Also your nephew's reaction was hilariously cute.
Sonic 2 featured Knuckles, Master Emerald, tails, the Tornado, Labyrinth Zone, the Death Egg Robot, and Super Sonic. Detective Pikachu featured nearly flawless live-action pokemon alongside people that included a brief Gengar vs Blastoise battle and culminated in a battle between Pikachu and Mewtwo on what was essentially a remake of the Smash Bros Pokefloats stage. Now we're getting a real true to the games adaptation of Super Mario Bros in what may be the greatest redemption in video game adaptation history. As far as movie and video game fans go, not a bad reality to be in.
One of the easiest ways to build empathy and connection to a character is to have them explore a new setting with the audience. By making him unfamiliar to the Mushroom Kingdom, it gets the viewer on his team if you will. If he is already familiar with the world around him the viewer has to catch up to the action instead of playing along with them. Probably why they did that.
People forget that Super Mario Bros was fish-out-of-water too. Mario Bros was in the sewers and Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew were on construction sites in the city. The story literally was that Mario went down a warp pipe and wound up in the fantasy world of the Mushroom Kingdom.
I like how Arlo brought in his nephew for this. Older fans tend to forget they're not the target audience any more, so it's nice to hear an opinion from a kid.
So I was rewatching the trailer over and over last night and came to a realization. I believe there is a very good reason as to why Chris Pratt is using his “regular voice”. If you listen very very closely to Pratt’s Mario, he has an ever so slight New York accent, especially in the “Mushroom kingdom, here we come” line. Now think. In the original lore of Mario, he was a plumber of Italian decent but was born and raised in Brooklyn. The only reason that he doesn’t sound like one today is because Charles Martinet crashed the Audition and decided to do something different then your stereotypical grouchy New Yorker, and they loved it so much they gave him the job. Couple this with the fact in the Trailer Mario clearly doesn’t know what the Mushroom Kingdom is and seemingly arrived by accident. Pair that with the fact one of the first leaks we ever had of the movie was Sebastian Maniscalco revealing that he is playing the character Foreman Spike, a human construction worker from the game Wrecking Crew, and claimed that the character is “Mario & Luigi’s Boss”. Mario has a normal, New York accented voice, because he’s just a normal guy from Brooklyn. He’s not a fanciful mushroom kingdom wahoo man, at least not yet as of the story of the film. Mirroring the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, Jim and Luigi are just dudes from New York, this is just their origin story. I think we could very well see Mario & Luigi come from an animated New York and arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom via some magical pipe or sewer tunnel, and they clearly get seperate done the process.
Arlo… we’ve always known, the bros are from Brooklyn NY. Not sure if this specific canon was just related to the cartoon from the 80s/90s(don’t remember the year), but they were just regular plumbers from Brooklyn, until they were warped to the mushroom kingdom during a call to fix someone’s plumbing. Even if that wasn’t the case, the instruction booklet that came with Super Mario Bros. always stated that they were brought from our world to the mushroom kingdom, and it’s likely going to be that origin for the movie.
The lore about them being from Brooklyn specifically was more of a concept by Nintendo of America and the Dic cartoons than from the developers like Miyamoto and Tezuka. Mario has the Brooklyn accent, but it remains to be seen if they straight up name drop Brooklyn or decide to say he's from New Donk City to keep things removed from the literal real world. Even so, the accent is a nod to the Brooklyn origins no matter where they decide where Mario's homeland actually is. There's that old anime that I believe is the first Mario Bros. adaptation ever where he gets sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom through his TV while playing his Famicom, so who knows lol.
@@legoboy7107 I never finished yoshi’s new island, so I don’t know the ending, but in the beginning they revealed that the stork that brought the bros to that house made a mistake, and they weren’t supposed to go to that couple at the end of yoshi’s island. Also, I’m not sure if the yoshi’s island series is canon to the Mario lore.
@@LocoRodeoBozo huh. Never knew that the lore was more or less a localization thing. Learn something new every day. Still, I always loved that detail, and I’d actually be more annoyed if was from new donk city, considering how he looks nothing like the locals there in Odyssey. Also, I’d feel it would be one of the rare examples of the “taken from the real world into a fantasy world” tropes that would actually work, at least imo.
Mario 100% gets the isekai pass lol. It’s been canon for 40 years with him going from fighting DK/plumbing in New York to doing stuff in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Don't worry about the trope of him falling into that world and not knowing where he is. It's like Alice in Wonderland (Super Mario Bros. original aesthetic reference point). So it is artistically fitting, regardless of existing tropes.
Been playing the Super Mario games since I was a kid in the nineties. I’m a thirty one year old adult and that trailer blew my mind with how great the CGI animation looked. I think Chris Pratt has another hit on his hands.
The choice for him to VA Mario was a weird one for sure but it’s pretty wholesome to see how happy he is about it, being a guy who also grew up on mario. Good for him.
Chris Pratt as Mario is really goofy, but it has already grown on me. Jack Black Bowser is actually really good. And the animation just looks incredible.
I became fare more happy with Pratt's voice when I was reminded that Mario is from New York City/New Donk City, meaning that the the minor shift to Pratt's natural voice works very well.
I pray to god that this is a cinematic success the world has never seen because when you brought up Luigi and it _not_ being Luigi's Mansion, I desperately started wanting a Luigi's Mansion movie o-o
Think of the ramifications if this was a super success: all Nintendo IP getting their own movies and then the characters getting Avengered into Mario Kart and Super Smash. I've been obsessing about this possibility when Sonic and Detective Pikachu became hits. We will be using the acronym NCU for years.
I'm almost certain they're going to make Mario come from Brooklyn, given the accent that Chris uses. It's not super obvious, but you can hear it. Probably a nod to the old Mario TV show.
It’s so lovely hearing your Nephew’s reaction - although a lot of us adults are going to watch it, the movie is aimed at his age demographic and it’s great to see how excited he is! I hope other children will enjoy it too! 🥰
Mario has 3 different origins depending on were you go. Origin 1. He is from New York and was transported to the mushroom kingdom. This version is also jumpman from donkey Kong Origin 2. He was born in the MK suggested by the yoshi games. Origin 3 (basically 2.1). Continuing from the yoshi Origin he was apparently raised in New donk city (the Mario world equivalent of New York) were he is still jumpman and the one who saves pauline (before just coming to live in the MK; I guess?) That last one is the current origin supported by Mario odyssey while the first is supported by the og game's game manual
Could be that there are some limited number of people that can transit between the world the Mushroom Kingdom (and New Donk City) exist in and the "real" world. Mario could have been born in the MK (although a stork is delivering him to his "parents" so we don't actually know where he was "born" in YI), but raised in the real world in BKNY. I think this would be an interesting concept to explore, but I definitely don't trust either Nintendo or Illumination to handle it well, as it would just end up being another poor 80's style trope- which is basically what the original movie was (although the cartoon did okay with the concept).
I wouldnt mind if mario was a plumber who found himself in a strange land while working on the drain super show style. Just so long as the real world is only implied (not a live action transforms into cartoon thing, but an implied cartoon brooklyn) He could realize that here, he's a hero and stay in the mushroom kingdom.
It’s probably going to involve donkey Kong and cranky Kong plots in Brooklyn/New Donk. Especially since Spike is in the casting. Definitely will be animated and not live action… I think nintendo is still a bit scarred from the last live action attempt 😅 they’ve given 0 indication for going anywhere near live action. They’ve confirmed the movie will be fully animated already I’m pretty sure.
I genuinely heard kind of a New York inflection in Pratt’s Mario voice. I genuinely think they’re going the Super Mario Bros. Super Show route of Mario and Luigi being from Brooklyn. I know that may make people upset, but I grew up with that and I love it!
@@orbic521 Could be! But my 30+ nostalgic self is hoping for Brooklyn. Animated Brooklyn, of course. Not some lame real human gets sucked into a pipe and turns into animated Mario or something that stupid…
I'm surprised that you didn't freak out at bowser's big moving castle. It's not one to one, but I'm pretty sure those hanging spike balls are only in Paper Mario.
I agree Arlo. The music got me too. I think even more than the orchestral big parts though, for me, was the fact that the very first notes of the theme, they didn't mess with the iconic nature of that tune. They KNEW how big this is, and the only appropriate way to open it, music wise, the iconic theme everyone has known for the past 37 years, was to have the ORIGINAL, exactly as it sounded, on the original NES from 1985.
When this was announced everyone was talking about how it's definitely going to be a train wreck. But I always imagined it looking exactly like it does right here, pleasantly surprised to be right to have had some faith in them.
Dude exactly, for the past year in the midst of everyone telling me it was gonna be garbage I still held on to hope and I've never felt more vindicated lmao
I think it was most definitely Nintendo's involvement which made the difference in this. Illumination does not have a great track record but it looks like here the premise should be simple but faithful to the lore.
@@wintergreen1436 we saw 2 min. The movie can still totally be trash ahah. The trailer looked interesting. I’m worried it’s going to be overly kiddish tho. We’ll see.
I think it's possible that Mario came from New Donk City. Charles Martinet is a voice credit in the film, so maybe he's playing "Jumpman" or Mario the senior who lives in NDC with his sons, Luigi and Mario the junior? And of course Cranky Kong is Jumpman's old frenemy. :D
Not even gonna lie, hearing the epic, orchestral version of the iconic Mario theme play over our first real look at the movie’s version of Mushroom Kingdom… yeah, I got chills
I know, sometimes they make very mediocre movies apart from despicable me and 2, but at least give them a chance since Illumination is distributed with Universal Pictures, I can't wait for the movie btw
@@ButterflyBlossom6415 I agree. I have a low opinion of Illumination studios and had low hopes going in, but the trailer blew me away. I am now very excited for this movie.
I don’t have anything to say about the animation it’s perfect and all the voices seem great (even Mario’s) we just need to hear more lines from Chris and I’m sure everyone will like it.
It feels like I'm watching the lego movie, which doesn't sound like Mario to me. Is not even a problem with the actor, I just think a higher pitch would been better
nephew vision is such a trip… mostly, we’re all grown up, unable to turn off the cynical, multilayered way in which we watch this things. Producers, financial incentives, actors reputations, promotional deals, timing… Nephew just enjoys the product detached from the real world. Child wonder :)
arlo, the entire thing of mario saying 'what is this place' makes sense. his technciall origin isnt being from the mushroom kingdom. its why spike the foreman is there. its an orign story it seems.. when they were construction workers possibly in new donk city?
I actually think that the star scene could be from the climax. I feel like he’s trying to find it and the penguins might say they don’t have one and that the mushroom kingdom is where is at.
Thinking back to several trailers who did just that, playing fast and loose with the timeline and making it seem like scenes are connected when they're really not, you make a convincing argument. Could very much be the kind of moment where maybe Mario has been knocked out but then gets back up again just to say "Me.", que final battle, type of thing.
Here in Brazil we have many talents in the voice acting department, and I often watch animated movies in Portuguese instead of English because of this. I liked the voice acting in English in this teaser, specially Kamek and Bowser (though I agree with your statement that Bowser's should be more menacing), but I didn't exactly vibe with Pratt's performance...then I searched for the Brazilian trailer and I was NOT disappointed. Mario's voice in Portuguese is incredible, much higher in pitch than Chris' and with a subtle Italian accent that makes it stand out. I'm proud of our talented actors
he's OBVIOUSLY coming from the 'real' world. there's no reason to assume he doesn't when that's BEEN his origin story in different adaptations and the fact that I don't think he'd be so shocked seeing the mushroom kingdom if he already lives in this fantasy world
The fact that Toad has stamps on his backpack with other Kingdoms from Odyssey makes me thing that where Mario lives and the Mushroom kingdom exist in the same world but distant enough in a way
Especially in places like 3:41 this movie has a texture that looks a bit like an oil painting.. Can't wait to see more of it! I'm wondering if all of the princesses will show up, in the games Peach has been my favourite since I was a child and my little sister really likes Daisy and Rosalina
Oh my gosh! Your nephew is so cute! I don't think I've heard him speak on the channel before. I can't help but imagine him as a little, lighter blue Arlo, kinda like Robin is to Kermit lol
Chris’s voice is good. It reminds me of the original Mario Cartoon before Charles took over Mario’s voice. I always preferred the more manly Mario’s voice better TBH.
I’m really excited to hear more of what they do with Bowser’s dialogue, Jack Black is doing a great job expressing him! They really captured the power of a king of koopas and it’s nice to see his villainous personality highlighted here. I could definitely see elements like the battleships incorporated really well.
This is the only movie in my life I will ever buy premiere tickets for. I'm so glad the teaser trailer is justifying that decision after all the worry we went through after the cast reveal. It's also great to hear Arlo's nephew voicing his opinions again.
after taking time to get used to it I actually really like the voices. Especially love them showing Bowser as an actual threat and not just "I kidnap Peach", a couple boss fights (maybe), then the end fight.
I'm also a grump about movies, but this trailer won me over too. I thought it was gonna be sarcastic and hokey, but it looks genuine. I'm here for a heartfelt Mario adventure.
I'll just say it. Earlier this year, Charlie Day said he wanted to make a Luigi's Mansion movie and I can now see that happening. "Now the piano has teeth, AH, COME OOOOOOONN!!" "WHY DOES EVERYTHING THAT'S DEAD WANT TO KILL ME?!" "Now I know why modern art scares me" "HEY GHOSTS! YOU SUCK!!"
Mario lives in Brooklyn in the movie. So he might have came from there Also I'm pretty sure they didn't pitch anyone's voice. Which means Keegan did the the actual voice

gonna be honest....Ya gotta choose a side in the 90s.
@@TheWorstPartyMember the goofiness seemed more from those around him rather than directly what he did, which I liked.
@@DonkeyBoyVids His goof is more apparent in his overall look. It's hard to take him 100% seriously when he's got stumpy limbs, bad posture and a gut (though looking again he's actually pretty buff). I couldn't help but notice he waited to blast the city until after Kamek moved all the penguins. Obviously if Bowser roasted a bunch of cute flightless birds to death, that might change the movies rating, but still.
Robotnick was silly, but he was a serious threat.
I love that Bowser isn’t just completely a comedic jokey villain, he feels like a genuine threat
Him destroying the penguin kingdom is necessary bc it definitely establishes that he is dangerous, to put it lightly.

Though with that backstory, the story of Mario becomes an isekai by technicality, which is kinda cursed.
Maybe something like Super Mario Bros 3, which we have several lands or worlds, like, Grass Land, Desert Land, Ice Land, and each of them have its own king and stuff...

We know Mario came from New Donk City, that was pretty obvious.

Would be amazing to get those Koopa varieties as toys!
It reminds me a lot of how they were shown in the Mario & Luigi RPGs, like an organized army, but obviously, in both versions, this serie of games and the movie, there is some goofiness attached to some soldiers.

We originally had an origin story for Mario and Luigi, they were plumbers from Brooklyn that found a warp zone into the Mushroom Kingdom. That stopped being a thing Mario 64 and onwards with the modern games.
Could this movie be bringing back that origin storyline?
I think that stopped being a thing since Yoshi's Island
I honestly hope so. I also hope it's literally both Luigi and Mario working together. I love Mario, but I truly hope it is like the old show. Where Princess isn't some damsel in distress and the bros actually are together most of the time. Along with toad.
Yall acting like both of these couldn't be true. Look at Odyssey. He and Luigi were probably dropped off to their parents by the stork, grew up in New Donk City (which is obviously a stand in for New York), found the warp pipe that took them to The Mushroom Kingdom and then we know the rest.
There's a theory it's being retconed from Brooklyn to New Donk City (right after saving Pauline from DK).

Some theories have it being retconned to New Donk City. Personally that's what I'm hoping for, but only time will tell for sure.

@@notmyrealname5268 By any chance, do you happen to know which source material is more connected canon wise?

Making the "New York" just be New Donk City just cleans things up so much.
Honestly the best part was seeing your nephews reaction to the trailer. Because if this movie is able to make the younger side of Mario's audience happy I think that's a success. It's not like Mario is a particularly deep franchise, so something simple and fun is great.
While I agree with it being simple and fun is enough, the fact the younger audience enjoys it doesn't mean much. @@Flowerz__ mario’s a huge franchise. People are obviously going to go nuts over a trailer that teases what might actually be a good movie. Let us be disappointed later if thats the case but for now let us be excited and hopeful.
I was so nervous and excited that my glasses fogged up from my body heat
I’m so excited since Toad’s Mario’s first friend in the mushroom world and it seems like he’ll be going on the adventure with the plumber. I sure hope he’s around the entire adventure since I’d love to see a Mario and toad adventure!
I love that bowser's facial expression looks like jack black. for some reason I feel like he fits the character
Your username...
I like how the koopa troopas have slight differences that make them seem like individuals rather than just copy and paste background characters.
Yeah, almost like a certain RPG that had something to do with paper and stories.
And Miyamoto is working on this movie. I guess the problem was Tanabe then.
Then Luigi went with him. But I doubt the movie is going to acknowledge Mario and Luigi as real human beings.
I noticed some small difference in body shapes in the koopas too, instead of them just being duplicates of each other
Still bizarre this is the reality we live in: that Nintendo AND Illumination are actually trying to go hard at making a proper Mario film.
Also in a few games, not just the old TV show and movie, Mario is just legit from Brooklyn.
Before it was retconned that Mario and Luigi as babies are from the Mushroom Kingdom
@@Confron7a7ion7 New Donk City
They'd probably call it New Donk City instead of New York City, but yeah you're right.
Except if that is all they were, explain the existence of Yoshi's Island and its impact on the Mario lore as it's the first game in the timeline.
The games have gone back and forth on that. The Yoshi's Island games, in particular. Unless the Mushroom Kingdom is in Upstate NY.
Now I’m even more pumped to hear how the others sound like. They did so damn well here so far.
His nephew is so wholesome. I couldn't stop smiling.
A dream for me would be: a sam raimi produced luigi's mansion. I feel like he could make a fun movie out of that
Think of the ramifications if this was a super success: all Nintendo IP getting their own movies and then the characters getting Avengered into Mario Kart and Super Smash. I've been obsessing about this possibility when Sonic and Detective Pikachu became hits. We will be using the acronym NCU for years.
@@djmarkiez interesting take I’d defo feel like he can defo do something pretty cool.
Apparently Charlie Day is interested in a Luigi’s Mansion movie!
This version is also jumpman from donkey Kong
Origin 2. He was born in the MK suggested by the yoshi games.
Origin 3 (basically 2.1). Continuing from the yoshi Origin he was apparently raised in New donk city (the Mario world equivalent of New York) were he is still jumpman and the one who saves pauline (before just coming to live in the MK; I guess?)
That last one is the current origin supported by Mario odyssey while the first is supported by the og game's game manual
It might be an equivalent where he's from New Donk City (?)
@@orbic521 Could be! But my 30+ nostalgic self is hoping for Brooklyn. Animated Brooklyn, of course. Not some lame real human gets sucked into a pipe and turns into animated Mario or something that stupid…
Saaaame
I'm glad Pratt didn't go over the top for Mario. The "Its a me!" voice would be irritating for a feature length movie.
Honestly I love Mario from Brooklyn, just feels right to me having him just be an actual plumber from a city like Super Show
When this was announced everyone was talking about how it's definitely going to be a train wreck.
We’ll see.
@@Flowerz__ I'm well aware of that, I'm just mainly talking about the general reception taking a complete 180
Same
"We've never seen the penguins from Mario live in a city!" - Arlo, of all people, forgetting about Shiver City from Paper Mario.
I don't know how, but they made Bowser and Mario look like their voice actors while still being faithful to the artstyle
I believe that this is going to be Illumination's best movie.
It doesn't feel like their usual output.
I know, sometimes they make very mediocre movies apart from despicable me and 2, but at least give them a chance since Illumination is distributed with Universal Pictures, I can't wait for the movie btw
The og despicable me movie was really good
@@ButterflyBlossom6415 I agree. I remember being really excited for the second Despicable Me.
Chris did ok, but the French dub did Mario better imo
everyone’s so quick to hate on mario’s voice, yeah sure it was maybe underwhelming.. but i want to give it some time and hear more of the voices!
I don’t know….Pratt sounds kinda off to me…maybe he should’ve given a more Italian dialect
@@serapheid3669 it very hard for foreign languages to sound bd to people.
It feels like I'm watching the lego movie, which doesn't sound like Mario to me. Is not even a problem with the actor, I just think a higher pitch would been better
Pratt's Mario has the lightest shadow of a Brooklyn accent. He's totally a New Yorker in this movie, and I'm all for it.
nephew vision is such a trip…
mostly, we’re all grown up, unable to turn off the cynical, multilayered way in which we watch this things.
Producers, financial incentives, actors reputations, promotional deals, timing…
Nephew just enjoys the product detached from the real world.
Child wonder :)
I love how Arlo reacts to everything with a full-on existential crisis. "what is this world we live in" LOL
arlo, the entire thing of mario saying 'what is this place' makes sense. his technciall origin isnt being from the mushroom kingdom. its why spike the foreman is there. its an orign story it seems.. when they were construction workers possibly in new donk city?
I'm proud of our talented actors
he's OBVIOUSLY coming from the 'real' world. there's no reason to assume he doesn't when that's BEEN his origin story in different adaptations and the fact that I don't think he'd be so shocked seeing the mushroom kingdom if he already lives in this fantasy world
Arlo's nephew gives this movie the seal of approval. Oscar winner movie right here folks
🏆🥇
The fact that Toad has stamps on his backpack with other Kingdoms from Odyssey makes me thing that where Mario lives and the Mushroom kingdom exist in the same world but distant enough in a way
Especially in places like 3:41 this movie has a texture that looks a bit like an oil painting.. Can't wait to see more of it! I'm wondering if all of the princesses will show up, in the games Peach has been my favourite since I was a child and my little sister really likes Daisy and Rosalina
Peach is for sure in the film, and her design is awesome! Mc donalds leaked her face.
@@Ihatethemulti Wait hold up…her design was leaked??? I thought it was just Mario’s face that got leaked shortly after the poster reveal.
Me too. Nintendo oversells the "cuteness" of things and it becomes obnoxious.
I’m really excited to hear more of what they do with Bowser’s dialogue, Jack Black is doing a great job expressing him! They really captured the power of a king of koopas and it’s nice to see his villainous personality highlighted here. I could definitely see elements like the battleships incorporated really well.
I can't wait to see more of Charlie Day's acting for Luigi
Seeing what he got into already, it's going to be great
And he's still perfect for Luigi's Mansion
i'm calling it now, the eyepatch and quivering koopas are going to be comedic villain sidekicks and steal the show.
I could see them being the Pintel and Ragetti (Pirates of the Carribbean) of the Mario universe. Lot of room for creativity on the subcharacters.
I still think it will be. A lot of room to disappoint.
This truly has the potential to become a classic in the world of animated films. I'm really excited.
Mario's face immediately reminded me of the 1986 animated movie. It's a bit different but I like it.
I'll just say it. Earlier this year, Charlie Day said he wanted to make a Luigi's Mansion movie and I can now see that happening.
"Now the piano has teeth, AH, COME OOOOOOONN!!"
"WHY DOES EVERYTHING THAT'S DEAD WANT TO KILL ME?!"
"Now I know why modern art scares me"
"HEY GHOSTS! YOU SUCK!!"
Isn't that kinda the point?
I can't imagine this trailer being any more perfect, honestly. I am 100% going to see this movie.
Mario lives in Brooklyn in the movie. So he might have came from there
Also I'm pretty sure they didn't pitch anyone's voice. Which means Keegan did the the actual voice
Yeah I was pretty sure Keegan just did that, though it might be difficult for him to actually do i believe that he could make his voice do that
@@DonkeyBoyVids there's a video of him going so high pitched he sounds like Toad from modern Mario games. Prettt sure this is, if not close, to a cakewalk for him
Did they say he's from Brooklyn? He's probably from New Donk City which could have it's own version of Brooklyn. But I doubt he's from "the real world"
