    I just bought this game. I’m planning on adding triangular tokens (leaf/leaves) that the spirits can add anywhere if they chose to stay put (choosing between moving or causing mischief). The seeker must use a move to remove the roadblock, but can use 1 collected leaf to reroll, or two to roll twice, discarding leaves after use.

    I essentially make a time limit (15-25 min depending on #shadowlings) for seekers to find all shadows or unmask 5-10 seperate masks within the time limit. If time runs out shadows win or shadows gather at one spot and win. That way the seeker doesnt stall and camp at unfrozen shadowlings. Also shadowlings have 20-30 sec to move only.

    This game looks amazing, I am just wary about the honesty of the players who have to police themselves on their turn. It was nice seeing the crew call themselves out for passing through the light on their turn.

  • @ultigamer2004
    @ultigamer2004 6 лет назад +28

    There needs to be a stalemate break rule in where the seeker can’t just keep going in a circle around frozen Shadowlings. Like if they touch the same mossy rock before touching four new ones, a Shadowling gets a mask back. Or something like that.

    • @Almar072
      @Almar072 5 лет назад +4

      What you're suggesting doesn't have to be an official rule, you can implement it in your game play.

  • @KYMXER59
    @KYMXER59 6 лет назад +20

    I realized once the first shadowling was discovered you could pretty much create a stalemate, by just circling it, because they can't win without un-freeing it so they have to get closer and then you'll probably get them all.

    • @baka_yu9343
      @baka_yu9343 6 лет назад +1

      I was thinking the same thing. The Shadowlings would need a whole lot of luck with the searching party rolling very, very unfortunately to avoid that trap.

    • @KYMXER59
      @KYMXER59 6 лет назад +5

      @@baka_yu9343 And it's what he did mostly, just circle. I also think if you just go back and forth down the center lane the shadowlings would be stuck because the light shines pretty good everywhere from the center out. Maybe different landscaping would thwart that.

    • @UseBefore2007
      @UseBefore2007 6 лет назад +16

      Yeah, it's a fun idea but the game design seems wobbly overall. Plus it doesn't seem like the lamp bearer would have much fun at all, not having anyone to strategize with, being at the mercy of die rolls and constantly putting the mask on and off and getting blinded by the lamp. I wouldn't want to do this for an hour.

    • @Pyr0blast
      @Pyr0blast 6 лет назад +9

      I think, played seriously, lots of games would last too long because running around is a losing strategy for seeker. We need additional rules to force seeker play more aggressively. A turn limit might be fine where after a certain amount of turns played, shadowlings gain some perks or maybe even the seeker loses. Well, this will of course cause shadowlings to play only defensively until they reach the turn limit so maybe we need some buff for the seeker to balance. In any case, game needs some more work for better playing experience.

      It's kinda like playing certain tag variations that involve rescuing as a kid, sure the "it" can just guard the first catch and game never ends, sure that is the best strategy, but is it fun for anyone then? Nope and kids would play something else.

  • @dimpleza
    @dimpleza 2 года назад +4

    We bought the game for the components and implemented our own rules. We're also playing with a tea-candle (adult supervision of course) as this makes the shadows much crispier and easier for kids (and adults alike) to see and estimate where the shadow will move to (it also creates an almost magical atmosphere). Our shadowlings also use dice but will not move on rocks like the candle but use the spaces where the trees are on. Also, no circling a shadowling once it's frozen. Makes for a faster and more relaxing game. One should keep in mind that this is an implementation of a game invented in 1985. I feel like adapting this to ones house rules is fair game at this point. We like it (with adapted rules). Maybe this helps!

    To be fair this game was doomed to drag on for a while since the host underestimated the power of the light and discarded two of the obstructions at the start. • @tttITA10
    @tttITA10 Год назад

    This game is so fine. The change in perspective in the video was, however, very confusing. In the top view, lantern man was on the right and the frozen shadowlings were on the top: in the front view, lantern man was on the left and the frozen shadowlings more downscreen.

    • @tttITA10
      @tttITA10 Год назад

      Also, the game has a design flaw that makes it potentially infinite. A new rule that would block some paths or divert the lantern from the frozen shadowlings is kinda needed to prevent stalemate.
      It could be maybe a third player category (say, a Spirit of the Forest, or a Mother Nature something) or event (tree fall, rainstorm) that would side with the shadowlings by creating roadblocks, or maybe a lantern side quest, say refilling the lantern every some turns.
      Maybe a change in the rules in that the lantern cannot go back even in an intersection and must choose an advancing path would also help.

      Shadowlings can move in the on the board as much as they want, any way they want. The exceptions are:
      1. they cannot touch the light, they will lose their mask and freeze upon the slightest contact
      2. shadowlings only move on the ground, aka the board. A move is only legal if you can satisfy the conditions of exception #1 without the shadowling's feet being lifted off the board (theoretically.)
      3. when the shadowlings' turn ends all masked shadowlings must be in a hiding spot

    • @nightcatarts
      @nightcatarts 6 лет назад +1

      Ahh, but you have to factor in the greater chance of landing on a mossy stone from two rolls compared with one too, which makes things a lot more difficult for the Shadowlings. It's more about how unpredictable you can make your movement than how far you can move.

    • @Pyr0blast
      @Pyr0blast 6 лет назад +1

      @@nightcatarts Good point! But it wouldn't make up for 1.5 movements so 6 would still be the best and 1 and 5 somehow close.

    • @nightcatarts
      @nightcatarts 6 лет назад +1

      @@Pyr0blast Eh, I'm not so sure. You could land on a mossy stone from the first roll & getting another means you get a whole other shot (the actual probabilities depending on where you are on the board at the time). Another 1.5 moves with only one or two chances to hit moss would be less strategically valuable than 1.5 fewer moves but double the chance of moss I think, because the Shadowlings would need to try to predict where you'll go. If you moss it & then reverse your direction, that throws off the predictions the Shadowlings had in mind, which would further increase the risk of them being spotted (but, admittedly, only if your reversed move takes you back beyond your starting position). Landing on a three or four way junction at the end of the turn also means you could get a better idea of where they're likely to be by shutting down all three/four available avenues. This game's a lot more complex than it seems when you sit down & think about it.

    I was wondering how they would film this with a game focused on being in the dark. I thought maybe a night vision setting on the camera, periodic check-ins with the lights on but Seeker's eyes closed, editing would circle where the Shadowlings are... But uh no none of that. We just experienced the game from the Seekers perspective.
    It was a weird Game the Game episode and this game is meant for children but it seems very easy to cheat in and it is because there really is no structure to the Shadowlings, they can do whatever they want

  • @DarkBunnyLord
    @DarkBunnyLord 6 лет назад +2

    seems like a super easy game for the person with the light, all you gotta do is path back and forth between someone you've already revealed and you win. Seems like it would be a lot better if you couldn't just turn around on a following turn, otherwise all seems a bit lopsided for the light bearer. It's a shame, the games premise sounds cool but the second you get even a half competant light bearer the game becomes practically unwinnable once you loose a single shadowling unless you just want to draw the game out for a super long time making it more a frustrating than fun game. Oh well.

    • @teejaykaye
      @teejaykaye 6 лет назад +1

      It could be solved just by implementing house rules. Say, you and your friends agree to not double back when playing the seeker, or make it so that each little shadowling can only move to an adjacent hiding place each turn. It's a really nice looking game, it's not too hard to tweak the rules to make it more enjoyable for your personal playstyle.
