Britishers were following the same Khalsa forward policy to capture the Khyber pass to put an end to the attacks from the west. No attack from the west occured after Ranjeet Singh captured Khyber pass and peshawar. When India got Independence in 1947. It was the same tribal pathans that attacked Kashmir and are the reason why half of Kashmir is in Pakistan because Sikh/British soldiers pulled out of NWFP in 1947. That is why India again had to send 1st Sikh Regiment to Kashmir in 1947 to thwart the tribal attack and save Srinagar (capital of J&K) from capture by them. History is not Black and white.
