Those sikh soldiers were fighting to safe their homeland (undivided Punjab) and their own people. Because in history there were many invasions and frequent raids from North West frontier into punjab. Those raiders murdered, pillaged, raped, looted villages and towns of punjab and took away women and children as slaves. In 18th century Ahmad Shah Abdali invaded India and Punjab several times, he made Punjab a heap of dead bodies and burnt villages. Later to stop that permanently, Maharaja Ranjit Singh invaded and conquered North West frontier in early 19th century and closed down the notorious Khyber pass, the route of most invasions into Punjab and India. It was like saving the fort walls so that the enemy could not pour inside.
Mr.Saragarhi fort was of Maharaja Ranjit Singh not of Afghans it was conquered by Maharaj RANJIT SINGH defeating afghans but after Anglo sikh war Britishers conquered the Saragarhi fort
