  • HI folks,
    Just a quick video talking through a catapult launch before self positioning for an Automatic Carrier Landing System (ACLS). I discuss both the avionics and the procedure as I demonstrate my own ham fisted efforts at using this system. The ACLS is a system used for hands off approaches to aircraft carriers in poor weather, similar to an ILS. It is subtly different. In an ILS, the aircraft flies itself down a projected beam of radio waves. With the ACLS, the plane hands control to the carrier ACLS system, and it is the carrier which takes control of the plane, and flies it down the beam.
    The video was made using FSX Steam.
    The effort pays off though, as I can recover to the carrier in low vis 75% of the time at the first attempt. If there are any ex-navy Tomcat drivers or RIO's out there, I salute you for what must be a truly terrifying procedure.
    It does take practice and time. If you ever wanted to try and experience spatial disorientation in FSX/P3D, then this is a good starting point. Remember folks, fly the instruments, because they don't lie :-)

    You are incredibly engaging, Sir and your expertise is absolutely invaluable! What a great work you've done for us here! Hats off, hands down! Thank you Sir!

    This sim is probably one of the most underrated on the market! £25 gets you a helluva aircraft. If you have the time and expertise to learn it from the manual AND use the LUA scripts in the Tomcat X (with the payware FSUIPC), you have something that equals the Superbug and blows PMDG out of the sky...Literally! Oh and a Thrust-master Warthog is also required! Well done Rich, you can certainly pick em!

    in real life hand flying the ils to mins is fun but managing autopilot is easy because you can look at the approach plates and stuff

    Wow. Military sims aren't really my thing and the thought of doing a carrier landing brings me out in a cold sweat! I WOULD be the guy that ends up flying rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong (Top Gun reference for the uninitiated). But THAT was a cool video, Rich. Nicely done.

    I'm a PPL myself and cocky/naive or whatever, I generally think I could confidently have a go at most things. "Quick this 747 needs a pilot!" - No problem, stand back. The thought of flying this wobbly goose down to a pitching deck, even in daylight? NO!

    Great vid! Really love your flight sim vids especially the F-14, its a fav of mine. Do you know if you can do this with Dino's F-14? As I dont have aersofts.....yet.

  • @ВячеславПолищук-щ4ъ

    Very good video, flightsim481! But I understand english aurally not enought. Do you have "step by step" instruction for ACLS in text variation? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this!

    Great flight, great video, excellent narrative.
    I've got a question for you though;
    Is this the ideal/correct zoom?
    The instruments seemed to be a little too far away.

    • @flightsim481
      @flightsim481  8 лет назад +1

      If there's one thing I find awkward with the F-14X it's the virtual cockpit zoom. It always seems to be either too close when the instruments are readable or when further away too hard to read the instruments. It's one of very few issues I have with the aircraft though. Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

    I see from the start you are getting the TACAN to tune to your carrier. How did you do that?

  • @richardnurse2772

    Hi, I can't tune the tacan station to my aircraft carrier. I tune the correct station, but nothing shows up in the Nav display in the F14, no TACAN reading. Give me some advice on how to setup the tacan for my carrier please.

    That was excellent! Which do you prefer and why? The Aerosoft F14 or Dino's F14?

    • @flightsim481
      @flightsim481  9 лет назад +3

      Depends on what mood I'm in. If I want more of a challenge, the Aerosoft one is amazing for its flight systems and dynamics. If I want a more relaxed flight, Dino's is awesome. Its an unfair comparison. One is a large add on designer/distributor, the other a small, private freeware designer. The key is that I would pay for Dino's aircraft, but I would pay more for Aerosofts. Both are excellent, but for different reasons. :-)

    Great video, appreciate all your effort! Can i ask which addon did you use for the aircraft carrier and does it work in p3d?

    • @flightsim481
      @flightsim481  9 лет назад

      The aircraft carrier is the USS Kittyhawk, and it comes with the Aerosoft F-14X as standard. I don't think it can be bought/downloaded without buying the F-14X.
      It goes into the scenery library and has 10 predetermined tracks around the world. To the best of my knowledge, other carrier aircraft should work on it.
      It does work with FSX Steam and P3D.

    • @dezzie50
      @dezzie50 9 лет назад

      oh I'm sooo lazy I actually have the F-14X and never knew the carrier was with it! :-0
      I feel like a nob! Actually I just deleted fsx from my system the other day as I was having so many issues with it, especially running win 8.1 I'm currently trying p3d and trying to get all my (fsx) addons working with it. It's taking a lot of time and patience but i'm slowly getting there. Love your videos and thanks very much for your reply, i'll try and match your flying skills the next day or two hopefully on a stable system!!!

    How are you liking FSX:Steam over FSX? Same difference or is it actually improved as many have reported?

    • @flightsim481
      @flightsim481  9 лет назад

      Lazy Basturd Same program, fewer bugs, slightly more stable. The key here is it's not a new program in any way, shape or form, but it does make an old platform more compatible with a newer OS, namely Windows 8.1. I actually quite enjoy it, not only because it does seem slightly more stable, but I never owned FSX Acceleration and so the Steam edition gives me access to aircraft carriers.
      Likewise, some may experience better performance, but I don't. What it did remind me of was how little you need to change the FSX config to get it to work properly. Nice video about less is more 'tweaking' here :-)

    If you don't mind me asking (It's a bit rude) on your patreon page you said you were sick?
    What could stop you from flying?
    Sorry if this question is personal. You don't need to answer it.

      +Exr Zone Hi, no problems for asking.
      I have a brain tumour which is incurable and which causes seizures resulting in temporary loss of vision on my right hand side. It was diagnosed after seizures 6 months after getting my fixed wing commercial licences. As a result, it will kill me, we just don't know when.
      Although it is medication controlled, it meant the loss of my Class 1 aviation medical status and as a result my commercial licence. It also stops me from getting a Class 2 or 3 medical and thus a Private Pilot's Licence. Bit of a bummer after forking out £35,000 in training and qualifying to fly for airlines but having nothing to show for it.
      Hence the transition into the world of simulation.
      Thanks for the support,
      Rich :-)
