I shot my AK74 for the first time a few weeks ago. It was awesome! There was like almost zero recoil. I really wish more ammo manufacturers would make ammo for it.
The whole CQB scene has been wildly glorified by all of the vetbro companies like FOG and glover and haley strategic etc etc. The guys in seals and ranger batt who wrote these books that have movies or shows foing all of the speed reloadss and high action cqb arent reality. These were guys with $200,000 in gear on their person and millions invested into training with night vision raiding a small house or apartment for a bomb maker. Thats not what a actual peer to peer conflict is when you have people jumping into your trench while taking artillery fire and drones dropping munitions on you.

His former company does still build customs, Rifle Dynamics. J.F. has a new company set to sell off-the-shelf models soon, Fuller Phoenix. I thinks he’s permanently retired from personally building customs.
@@chrisj683 He only recently stopped doing customs, and he usually doesn't do them online. I lived in Phoenix for a bit. I called the shop. Typically they want you to come by for a consultation, quote, and deposit. Most of his rifles run about 2400-2800, maybe 3-3.4 depending on how much zenitco you get. For a year or two before that, he had waitlists that people signed up for. I think he would do 2 build seasons a year and put out 300-400 rifles each time. The latter part I'm not sure about, that's just what I gleaned from the information on the website at the time in 2017-2018. I visited the shop in 2021.

You touched on something i say all the time about firearms instruction. Everybody is focused on speed. Speed draws, speed drills. I'm not actually arguing against this I'm making a point about gunfighting that gets lost in all this speed training. If you look to the gunfighters of the old west the perception is also about who was the fastest gun. However if you listen and read what those gunfighter said they weren't focused on speed. They were focused on sneaking up behind the other guy and killing him. They were focused on not giving the guy a chance and making that dude dead before they could get hurt. They were focused on survival not being the fastest. Now were they fast? Most likely. When you get good with a tool you start picking up very natural very smooth speed and personally i think this is ac better speed to b have than the hasty forced speed people tend to seek. I think getting it done right, cause done right is done and done is good and done can't kill you is the right kind of speed. This is about lethality and killing and speed comes as a by product. My final point is that current firearms training teaches haste not aware speed. It has people mag dumping in urban environments. I don't respect this. It hasn't calm, it isn't calculated. It isn't effective apex predator lethality. Now i haven't shot any humans but i do spend a great deal of my life in the wild with my dogs and i have been in tricky situations with dangerous animals. I have pulled the trigger, but it's rare and i prefer to stay calm and let things play out. There was a bad and very tight situation with a pissed off rattlesnake i can point to. I can't tell you how fast rattlesnakes are but i can tell you they are fast as shit and faster than mec and i have a background in bmx racing and striking. I'm pretty quick and tuned in. When there was no choice i shot the snake once, it continued to get into strike position so i shot it again. I didn't mag dump, in didn't panic. I had 4 dogs within 5 feet other people were within 100 yards on that trail. The dogs are trained but i still had to direct them to let me handle it. It happened very quickly, it was very much life or death, there was a lot going on and i still didn't mag dump. Even though it happened quickly it wasn't about speed it was about not fucking around, understanding the very real danger and not giving the snake a chance to hurt me, my dogs or anyone else. There have been other situations but they played out more slowly. What i can tell you it is very rare, very rare that i shoot and if i followed the current focus in firearms training i would mag dump a buck or elk 4 times a year every year. Even with how insanely fast bmx racing plays out it isn't about reflex it's about being tuned in, being smooth and calm and looking as far down the track as possible. You don't look at the jump your on or indeed the landing you look at the next obstacle and for any wipe outs. Reflex and speed come with time. They are a given. If you are focused on them you're in the wrong sport. Now again i will say that part of weapon proficiency is manipulating the weapon quickly but that is a product of practice. If instead of focusing on speed the focus was on survival and killing we would have calmer better shooters. I find most shooters without combat experience very insecure and dangerous because of it. It's because all that tactical training is a lot like always working out on a punching bag but never sparring. While i get experiences in the wild i think for most people airsoft is better and also more direct. They will find that speed in manipulating the weapon is a given and the focus is survival and killing. If my use of the word killing triggers you I'm gonna say you have created a disconnect from the reality of weapons. Connection with the reality of weapons doesn't make you a psycopath it makes you honest.

As an AR guy, AK's are a lot of fun on the flat range. 5.45 ammo is a little rare right now, but I still love it nonetheless.

Since then I've just built my own AKs.
My first AK was a Tantal and my most recent was a PSA 105. Midwest Industries has been kind to both.
