I'm a Timex Nerd. 90% of my collection is Timex because I fell in love with my first Timex 45 years ago. Now I am digging the direction of the company with their reissues and can't stop my Timex addiction. Also my late mentor John Bogle wore a Timex. His net worth was 60 million, but wore a 20 year old Timex and drove a 16 year old Volvo. I don't have a net worth of 60 million, but have enough to buy a luxury watch, but I'm just not that kind of person. I also drive a 12 year old Nissan Versa which I love as much as some guys love their Mercedes. I'm just a weirdo.

You forgot about my kind. "Low end and keep it to ten" I don't buy anything too expensive and keep my collecting to ten or less. I am even thinking about keeping my collection to 6 -7. Got to have a diver automatic(right now an Invicta), tachy automatic (right now a Tissot), light dial dress watch (always a Rado ceramic and will probably always have to be a quarts due to cost), black dial dress watch (also always a Rado ceramic, different style than the light dial), Seiko automatic (traditional no complications, or maybe a date and not a metal bracelet), a work beater (right now a $35 SO &CO with leather strap), and a rubber, or silicone, band for working on the car, cleaning, exercising, etc, watch (like a Timex Ironman, or could just wear my work watch like I do now). It is hard to get around to wearing just that many enough. So I am thinking of selling a couple. Great job. I had never put too much thought into the different types of collectors. Not many people I know even wear a watch anymore and if they do they are not watch enthusiasts in anyway. I think another type of collector could be called the Mod Guys, or Tinkerers and end up with collections (both assembled and in parts haha). I like tinkering a bit, but not big into it yet. Thanks for the video and cheers.

I guess I'm a special event kind of watch collector. I like to buy watches to mark a special occasion or milestone. When I achieve a goal I buy a watch as a reward. That way whenever I check the time I'm reminded of a special occasion or achievement. It also motivation to achieve more goals.

I'm a "one watch guy" My James Cameron 126660 goes everywhere with me, and it always will. I love watches and love gaining knowledge about all brands both new and vintage but I can't imagine not seeing my deep-sea on my wrist. Hard to explain but I have peace in my tiny collection.

    Yet another great perceptive video,,,
I don't fall into any "collector" category, I'm just a working class guy, who loves watches in general, I'm currently saving for my one and only "grail" watch, (Omega Seamaster),, it's a way off still, but getting closer,,,
Till then, I'll live out my fantasy watch collection, by watching channels like yours, lol,,
all the best, and keep up the excellent content,,

Fantastic content, just found your Channel and I’ve subbed !!
I’m absolutely in love with “tool watches” especially dive watches. There’s something so romantic about having a watch that can go through everything with you in life be it good or bad. Some of the pieces I have remind me of such fond memories I strap them on if I’m having a bad day and it definitely helps.
As you said that one watch guy, oh how I admire that man.

  • @mikec3454
    @mikec3454 3 года назад +3

In a way, I think we go through multiple stages of watch collecting. Through my 13 years of collecting, I've fallen into the flipper category and now I'm probably more in the watch box or watch nerd category. While I love my Rolex 114060, my 116000, or my Tudor BB36, I also get a lot of joy wearing my $350 Dan Henry 1964 chronograph and I bought a Casio F-91W just a couple weeks ago.
I also buy watches now to mark special occasions and I'm no longer interested in flipping - if I'm buying it, I'm keeping it. Once I start gifting my watches to my kids down the road, ultimately my goal is to become a 2 or 3 watch guy, maybe even a 1 watch guy. So ultimately, we work our way through the various categories of collectors over time.

Not to me. I mean if that's their thing I don't hold it against them go in good health, but why limit yourself to one it's almost sad? I am the one watch-box guy. I have ten slots and I'll keep it at ten. There's a lot of beauty and pleasure in such a collection. And variety. There are quartz and autos and manuals with many beautiful dials. Most are under $1500 one is about $5000 some are under $500. I have plenty of peace of mind. Two slots remain empty and I'll fill them whenever something special comes around. This seems healthy to me.

Good video . Definitely identified myself . I have learned that once I buy a watch box that hold a certain amount of watches , my brain won't rest until it's filled . I started my collection with the intention to own once piece from every top tier brand , but the problem is that you start falling in love with certain brands and things go sideways. Cheers

I was a sentimental watch guy until the woman that gave the watch to me cheated on me and gave the watch bad juju. It was a Seiko automatic, and it stopped dead on the day we broke up. It lasted exactly as long as the relationship, to the day.

  • @rockon21ful

Great video, I’m not even sure where to start🤔 I’m a bit older than you and my holy trinity was always Rolex, Omega & Breitling but I could jump from the nerd crowd though I’m not after 10 dollar watches I do love some of my USSR & Russian Vostok Amphibia divers that are pretty much under a 100 bucks and at times the strap or bracelet cost more than the watch. Would really think I’m a dive watch fan and mechanical at that though in 1983 my boss at the time and business partner the last 30 years sold me a 1978 1675 GMT Master for 300.00 dollars and I wore it through the mid 80’s then gave it to my younger brother for free because I didn’t like the acrylic crystal and small crown😳 the main reason everyone wants them now and the biggest watch mistake I’ve made to date. Went through several submariners into the 90’s and still have a 16610 W serial from 1995 and a 16613 that I bought brand new from an AD in Carmel Ca on Jan 30 1999 and was a U serial transitional “SWISS” dial which was the first time Rolex used Luminova, Blue dial😉. Sorry this is going to be a book, then needed a blue dial Omega Seamaster Pro Bond from 2000; Breitling Super Ocean from 2002 and I’ve always felt it was better made than the Sub and Seamaster, might not of had rolexes movement but 1500meters and a better bracelet than both. Keep in mind I still have all these then picked up a Titanium Breitling chrono avenger, Breitling avenger sea wolf, Panerai submersible 00024, Longines legend diver, Kobold Seal, amazing Germany brand UTS 1000m anniversary diver, #0008 Stowa prodiver seatime, Fortis B-42 marine master a few homage pieces that I enjoy and aren’t made by the original brand anymore,Tudor & several vintage Seiko divers, in quartz I own the Bulova Lunar Pilot and original vintage Seiko Alien Ripley or the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed watch. Back to mechanical a vintage Seiko UFO, some newer Seiko divers and on and on and many more. I post on IG under twalk80 and it’s all the watches I have today, I just love watches and get joy from most pieces and as a collector the one watch that is a must, the Omega Speedmaster Pro Moon watch is one I don’t have🥺bought a used one years ago from what was called a amazon storefront and when it arrived it was a fake, the price was too good and I should have known better but amazon held on to my money and got it back and it put a bad taste in my mouth and never picked one up even though I know it’s a must for any collection. Well sorry again but I could go on forever about stuff I let go and sure I’ve got a bunch of odd stuff I didn’t mention so maybe a higher class nerd or maybe they don’t have a name for me🤔yes I do have a few g-shocks too, sorry again for goin on and on! Also about 50 straps for the Panerai, shitload for the legend diver and in total maybe 100 straps & aftermarket bracelets and ton of natos!

My collection is the “one of each” i.e. one field, dive, aviation, dress, casual, quartz, chronograph, as well a a beater. Although I do have a couple overlaps due to sentimental reasons, I try to keep my entire collection in one WatchBox....and the collection does shift over time but those few select pieces stay a permanent fixture in my collection.

While I definitely fall into your "one watch box" type, I consider myself a category you didnt mention: the strap collector.
I've got a dedicated 6 watch box, mostly modest Seikos, in my one box. However, I have dozens of Natos and quick change leathers and silicones for hundreds of possible combinations. I switch out my straps weekly and it feels like I've always got a new watch.

I realised that buying tens of thousands of dollars of watches was a waste of money, even though I could afford to do so, so I sold many of my watches (over 50) and kept my practical watches (10 or so tool watches I actually use the functions of) because I've discovered that the thing that brings me the most joy in my life doesn't include material frivolities. This also included my car collection, my wine collection, even my house which enslaved me to these material possessions.
So I wonder what kind of watch collector I am?

Spot-on on the descriptions of these different types of collectors especially the one-box guy. But I have yet to meet a one-watch type of collector and I agree that it will be an interesting person. More power to the channel.

Seiko , orient , g shock square and omega. I'm happier with that. Not too expensive and not too cheap. Just right. Dont like to be flashy.

Great analysis and reasoning, I know I’m a little behind on your videos but working through them all...newly subscribed! Called out some excellent points, recently become a 3 (4 in all honesty) watch guy...aspiring to be a 1 watch guy within a few years. Recently picked up my 126660 from my AD and think it could happen sooner rather than later.

Interesting! I guess I fall into the "One watch box" category: 10 and counting ... (Oris, JLC, IWC, Chronoswiss, Fortis, Nomos, Sinn, Zelos, Yema, Direnzo). I am trying to have as much variety as possible in my small collection, in terms of country of origin, brand, style, functions, etc. Next on my wish list are Christopher Ward, Glashütte Original and Omega. As I want to focus on quality rather than quantity and not go much beyond 10 (or maybe a dozen) watches, rather than being a "Flipper" I have begun to give some of them away to my loved ones (Oris - son, Nomos - wife, IWC - father). Cheers!

I am exactly what you described as the 3 watch guy. My end goal is a 5 watch collection which i set my mind to 3 years ago after collecting watches for about a decade. If acchieved i will become the watchbox guy i guess. Still saving money for my 4th watch and litteraly nothing that has been released over the last years has made me change my mind. I am grateful that I am over the point of being impulsive, the endless searchs, decisions, doubts and so on. Every watch I add to my existing collection must offer a unique perspective and dimension while still being practical. Currently that is the remaining challenge and fun in collecting watches for me. I do wonder if i ever hit the 5th watch as the price also increases exponentially now, not sure if i can ever justify paying that amount of money on a watch. But that is also part of challenge and fun.

As a newbie I am buying low cost, attractive and great value watches in different categories to experiment with the styles, what do I really like? When will I wear it? This may lead later to a more expensive purchase. You are correct, just wearing an attractive watch makes you feel better. It does not have to be a Rolex or Patek.

I’m definitely the 12 watch guy with a core of about 8. While some come and go. Oh and I was wondering where you got that Omega art piece that’s behind you in the video. I love it and I recently bought the Moon watch!!!

Very good insight into different types of collectors. One other collector maybe strictly the investor; the one who would speculate the value of the watch in the future and sell at a higher price point, just like someone who buys and sells valuable works of art and sells them at an auction. Makes his living doing this.

Fun video! I’d put myself in between One Watchbox and Three Watch Guy. I’m in the earlyish days of collecting, but I have a specific plan for my core collection. I envision the number being four to five pieces. The Explorer and the Sub I’ve been fortunate enough to acquire already. Next will likely be a dressy watch, perhaps Grand Seiko or IWC. Then most likely will come the Datejust. Beyond that I’m not sure, but a man’s gotta own a Speedy right?

    •  4 года назад +1

I only ever had cheap utilitarian watches and did not really understand what kind of idiot would pay more than $50 for a watch. For many years I didn't wear a wrist watch because my job made that a safety concern. After I retired, I began the slow, irritating process of downsizing. While cleaning out a junk drawer, I came across my late fathers Seiko, and wondered if I could fix it up and wear it. The next time I was near a jewelry store, I went in to ask about fixing that watch and made the mistake of looking at a watch display. It only took me about 10 minutes to be infected with the Watch disease. I went home and began researching watches in my price range, figuring that if I was only going to have one watch, it should be a really nice watch....... That theory went out the window quite quickly. I now have three decent watches (Dress, Casual, and Chronograph), and a long wish list of watches, new straps, clasps, tools, etc. on Amazon, and several other vendors sites. I am now the one box kind of collector. It has space for 6 watches...... that may not be big enough. Is there a Watches Anonymous addiction counselling group? I may need it.
