Disclaimer - an increase in primary side capacitance to the level I've done here is experimental on my part. Don't go this crazy yourself unless you're prepared to accept the consequences, as I am. In other words, don't try this at home. Use the original uF values if you're worried. For voltage - going to higher voltage parts is just fine, and in this case preferential due to how close the deck runs those parts.
I finally finished restoring my Sony TC K96R and I'm pretty happy. All new caps, transistors, belts....It was a Goodwill find it even had the manual and wired remote. It was playing low on the left side but some adjustment on the left playback amp fixed it.
Congrats mate. I am genuinely happy you got through with it. My dream is to have an at least *decent* reliable tape deck. It doesn't have to premuim & upscale. I am in the market for 1, preferably restored😢
I have a recorder exactly the same model, also with problems, (probably capacitors) when you play a cassette it turns off after a few seconds, however I want to recover it because it is a beautiful machine, very well built and with exceptional quality. I have already received most of the components needed for the repair. I have the original paper SONY service manual. I have been following your videos, so thank you very much.
Very likely the servo board has gone out of alignment because of the caps getting old. All I did was replace the six bipolars, and that was enough to throw it out of alignment because of where those caps are in circuit. I'll cover the alignment in the next video, but you'll need an oscilloscope and a power supply to do it... I don't think it's even possible without those tools. I'll get to that part when I can, but I'm new to this so I want to take my time so I can get it right.

Fortunately I have these tools and this is a project that I want to complete, not now (I'm with others) but I want to collect all the information so that I can successfully complete this project. Losing your ear training sucks. It was one of those things that my university profs continually warned us about. Also, ears age. When I left school I could “hear” 15hz to 20khz (I quote hear because 15hz is more of a feeling than a sound) and now I’m down to 15hz-17Khz less than 20 years later.
Not sure what you mean. I prefer Fix Your Audio belts for most high end decks except for these dual capstan direct drive units. In these cases, the thinner PRB FRSP8.97 is better. Both this deck and the TD-V931 (video in two weeks) have already very clearly confirmed that for me. However, the FYA belts usually outperform the rest of the PRB belt line, so it's only the FRSP8.97 I like right now. For not so high end decks, DeckTech belts from England are my go-to. They usually do worse than FYA belts, but not by too much, and they are usually way better than the cheap Chinese belts on eBay.

I remember from years ago I visited a Best Buy to speak with a Sony representative that was there to show case new Sony products. I spoke to the gentleman about Sony reliability and he informed me that reliability was not a big deal customers could always buy another Sony product because Sony makes the best products. I thought he was very callous and cavalier. Fast forward a decade and I purchased a Sony 65" X90J. I read that it was considered an average LCD HDTV. WRONG... I am perfectly happy and I have not had a single problem.
No such thing as audio grade capacitors, its all marketing and snake oil. Just look at the ratings and leakage current and buy the best quality capacitors. The Muse ones are usually only rated 85c (using old designs and formulas), so they have a shorter life. Using a slightly larger uF capacitor for power supply areas is often okay, but doubling it could lead to damage. Those larger capacitors will look like a dead short at the moment the unit is turned on until they are charged, the larger the capacitor, the longer that dead short is lasting. This can over time cause diodes to fail if they aren't rated for higher currents, or cause transistors or voltage regulators to fail or blow solid state fuses. Also the larger capacitance could cause damage to build up over time when the unit is turned off. It is possible a smaller value was chosen compared to another supply rail to ensure it was de-energised first before some other area of the circuit, now on turning off the unit current/voltage could flow back the wrong through part of the circuit.
This is very nice deck i have serviced one for myself. Dont be afraid to disassemble those reel motors its not complicated as it looks like and also relube those pinch rollers arms - from my experience those were fused to their shafts and no play mode in the first place... Regarding capstans dont spin...familiar to me too, but on my part one stupid 10mh inductor near controller chip was 'open' and because of it all tape transport was actuality doing nothing - just imagine how much time it took to find that one faulty part... :))) In the end these k666es are very nice peace of engineering and they sound very nice and warm. That's just the PRB naming scheme - I don't think it stands for anything in particular.
I have some 8v meter lamps, I think they're 4mm diameter, what are the dimensions of the one you need for the well?
Looks like it's 4.8mm x 26mm. I'm not sure I can save the green filter on it, but that's not a big problem for me.

For the 1.5v dc supply, can you get away with using a fresh AA battery?
Unfortunately no - it needs to be a regulated 1.5V DC.

I bought my parents the 55” version of that set for Christmas a while back. Still working today.

I hate Sony , everything I've had of Sony has failed from vcr's to video camers to TV. Sony is all hype.
I wouldn't say they're ALL hype, but they've annoyed me about as often as they've impressed me.
I have sony boomboxes that are still working perfectly. I do prefer JVC over anything though.
