Years of physical, mental, and sexual abuse probably played a pretty large role in the comebacks of several of these girls. Gymnastics on its own is not a long term sport for most because of the physical demands but add other elements and it definitely had to take a toll. Very sad because they were all really amazing, and dedicated their lives to the sport. It must be very hard to decide how to move on and figure out what to do at the end of an elite career and I wish nothing but the best for them. They deserve it.
I hope that with the improvement in coaching methods and the governing body, burnout in gymnastics will become less common. I don’t really think gymnasts “naturally” burn out by their teen years. I think the abuse many of them unfortunately endured played a huge role in injuries and retirement. That along with coaches learning how to coach girls going through puberty will definitely help their longevity.
Has Rebecca Bross said she was abused? I think it's really terrible to just assume every gymnast was a sexual abuse victim. I don't think women like having that label.
I feel so bad for McKayla especially since we now know that she was being abused by Nasar as well. She looks so much healthier and happy after retiring.
@@Kim.Nabiii the doctor for the gymnastics team. There wasn't a lot of doctoring going on though. It was revealed he sexually assaulted a lot of the gymnasts. Keep in mind most of them were minors.

mckayla poor girl she was being abused by nassar while she was competing on a broken foot and chin i just cant believe the strength she has to be able to compete with a broken foot
One reason Bross had such issues was the shape of her legs. From her knees down, her calves had a bent outward form. It isn’t her fault and was born like that and to be honest I’m surprised she didn’t shatter her knees much sooner on impact because of this. She technically couldn’t put her feet together and stand, always having that odd leg split.
Agreed. I noticed it especially on bars that sickled feet were the result of her bowed out legs. Not much she could do about that. It’s just unfortunate.
While doing research for this video, I read an interview where she said she didn’t feel like she could compete with the other girls (lacked confidence in herself). She was actually as good as Wieber or Komova, sad she didn’t see it
In an interview in 2012 Bross said that it was un-spoken thing with her coach (Valeri) to keep working on the Patterson dismount, which never made sense to me, if I was her coach I would make her take it out, she fell on that dismount 95% of the time since 2011- it was killing her knees.
@@daiseycasey2718 really? I still feel he should have encouraged her to do a different dismount like the double pike after her knee injury she just never landed the Patterson in competition.

I know Jordyn Wieber tried to make a comeback in 2013. Her coach was all over it saying it was “not a publicity stunt.” But she stop doing drug testing in late 2013 and never re entered competition after the 2012 Olympics. Her coach was clearly very abusive to many of the athletes in the gym. She didn’t have to deal with it much throughout her career but he was facing serious accusations in 2013. She and her mom decided it was best not to be in that gym anymore. She also headed to UCLA and embraced a new identity as a student and a team assistant. I suppose it was a comeback but she never got to compete during the comeback.
I feel like the Rebecca Bross situation has something bad happening behind the scenes. She fell so many times on the same skills and no coach ever thought of changing them?
i wonder if they know how much we fans adore them? i know im not the only one who has cried for these young women on multiple occasions, for multiple reasons. Mckayla should have specialized in vaulting only and stopped being a generalist, which would have made it possible to reduce her training hours and rest to come back stronger on the vault, but when you have a sport burnout it's definitely done, you don't want gymnastics anymore
the new rules relating to team member numbers started discouraging that. With less gymnasts on the team they want all around people rather than event specialists
She describes symptoms of autoimmune disease. Some cases of autoimmunity are absolutely stress triggered and go into remission when stress is reduced and brought under control.
