- Due to its unique requirement for calmly drawn arcs and precise timing, the maul forces the user to engage with the fundamentals of combat in a way other weapons don't. There is no one-size-fits-all strat here (any pole hammer mains out there?), so the mauler must know the enemy AND the self. Learn the maul, learn them all.
Properly swinging the maul requires feeling out the timing of turning and stepping which, as a skill, broadly applies to the use of any weapon. The maul's reach, weight, and speed make it hard to find openings so if you can do it with the maul, you can do it with anything.

bro I always think maul is a shit weapon cuz I can't figure that out how to counter long pole-arms.
But after watching it I saw an opportunity of this weapon again. Closing steps was the missing key that I looking for. Plus I never thought backhand swing could be so devestating. It is surprisingly precise on headshots! So work always man!

Very nice, I developed a lot of the same style using my low-rank favorite, the Bardiche. It has a similar swing pattern.

That mushroom technique save me lots of trouble on losing direction, even on other weapons! Great skill!

I mushroom slap with axe and bigsword too and it works well enough
Im a huge newbie especially compared to you but I seem to have discovered a very similar technique using a great axe. Ill have to give the maul a go!
Also this makes it easier (for me at least)
if I want a left to right swing I'll click the right first, stop clicking, then click again when my mouse is on the left side slightly behind me and then make a big ass mushroom (idk if this is a good description) (you can move into it for more power also but you knew that)
but yeah after the first swing i can spam right to left mushroom slaps over and over and can even alternate directions if i want
also crouching does some stuff but I'm not good enough to execute it lmfao

I watch these tutorial videos and sometimes I think I should try the same. Then I came to my senses and looked at the health bar. Ha ha what is this? You suffer so much with this meek heavy stump, losing half or 2/3 of your health...
My long halberd with a HUGE melallic stabbing part, with a reverse blow (left-right), sweeps away any target (including knocking down) humanoid size with 2-3 hits in 10-15 seconds.

Double click and hold. You might also want to check out your control settings, when I made this video C was crouch by default but these days it's X.
i have this weird bug where my character does a 180 attack and ends up perfectly with their backs turned against the oponent, my attacks somehow have the range of a dagger, severe input lag with footwork or downright does nothing even with the button press in dash mode, enemy attacks seem to have incredible speed, they dont even charge the attack, specially overhead attacks, enemies have nearly perfect reaction time and dodge my attacks within half a second, move faster than me despite me being at encumberance 0. Ugh, dont know if this is like an anti-piracy measure or what but something feels broken, literally imposible to play like in this video, my character feels nerfed, also when i do land an attacks is generally with the handle of the weapon
This video is kinda old and on probably the fastest patch of all time, there have since been 2 physics engine reworks. You're right that it's impossible to play exactly like the video but a lot of the concepts are still solid. "Input lag" or ai instant reaction time is an experience thing, it takes time for your character to use their muscles to act.

The stuff I talk about in this one, like how you step when you release the key or recover balance with the mouse, might be more relevant to today's Exanima.
How important is bodytype/height in this regard?
It isn't as big a deal for just fighting as it is for throwing. The characters in the video are all default size.
In general, the bigger your guy is the easier the game will be.
@@GilGamesHello Thanks for replying. Yeah, trying to throw with my shorter emaciated guy usually trips me instead of them, but you warned about that. But whenever I play a super tall beefcake they feel slow.
