I'm glad yall talked about certain codes. You honored the Sunday truce and if the bangers/OGs knew you were smart and felt you had a future, they'd straight up tell you this game aint for you. My dad's side of the family was from LA (Venice, Carson, Compton) and I'd hear these stories all day from my cousins

I was born and raised in Toledo, OH. When the movie "Colors" came out, gangs popped up everywhere! I never got involved but a lot of people I went to school with jumped in and never jumped out. Toledo slowly deteriorated after that. I go back to visit but I'll never live there again. This song was fire, but nothing will compare to the Stop the Violence movement started by KRS-ONE.

the scene in this video where they put their guns down as a kid stands between them happened to me in real life. i grew up in chicago and one night when i was a kid i was in my moms car in traffic. there was a gang situation where the guy on in one car was gonna shoot a guy in the other car, and my car was between them. the guy with the gun looked at me, put his gun down and said "you're lucky this kid is here, otherwise i woulda blasted"

And also, MC Hammer was very successful as a commercial radio friendly rapper, then that played out and he went and tried being a 'studio gangsta' hardcore, and he caught a lot of flack for that.

Yeah this was out before Self Destruction fyi... That was kind of birthed by East Coasters seeing this video. Young was actually from the East Coast was only out in L.A. for college did a lot of ghost writing out there. Gangs that were on the East had a different style and vibe. Gangs from Southern California constantly sent had dudes flying out of state to see relatives or whatever and would show people the West Coast Game ending up setting up annexed extensions in what ever city because you could take a homeboy out the hood but not the hood out of the homeboy! ;)

gangs were everywhere in the late 80s and by the late 90s a lot of it was dying out really. I'm from Oklahoma and our local gangs directly associated with California neighborhoods in the early 90s. Basically neighborhoods in this big cities like LA branched out. Hit areas like Oklahoma City and made connections with existing gangs for drug trafficking purposes. Thats how these gangs from California expanded the way they did. Crime was a lot different at the time. Today you have white collar crimes, internet crime etc and back then everything was live and in person hence all those crime statistics being that much higher than today. That said just because someone was in a gang doesn't mean they were active at committing crime. Just means they represented a neighborhood that they came from. You ofcourse had wanna be gangs too which filled the majority of the midwest

Pause video at 0:35 to glimpse at wall. (sigh) Mostly young Black men, one holding a baby. Moment of silence. If you are interested, there is a little write-up I found about that wall: homicide.latimes.com/post/nickerson-gardens-wall/ I saw a couple of comments I thought was note-worthy. The second one is long, but very poignant. Someone suggested a wall for scholars who made it out. That is a good idea.

“Joe Barker was the very first young man that I met that seemed to really card about the the residents in the Nickerson Gardens , he just was very young and his father wasn't around to give him guidance and so he became very anxious when the Nickerson Gardens were under attact by the gang known as the crips and he took it upon his own to do something about it. He never even saw what was coming he was too young and too in a hurry. He was always serious about protecting those he loved and he was more than willing to lay his life down for what he believed in. God bless the Barkers and may they all find peace in Christ Jesus and find love and forgiveness throughout the rest of their lives. R.I.P. my dear brother , Joe Barker. (Bishop E. Harvey, July 2, 2017 at 4:53 p.m.)

      Rev. Warren,
So when is enough enough? I made it out, got my education working 3 jobs that paid minimum wage, took the same thing to lunch every day for 3 years...baloney and cheese, nothing else -- oh! and a bottle of water. I put my money into books I needed for school. At night when I got off the bus after riding for two hours to get home, I ran home. A running target is harder to hit.
When I finally had made it out and had money and a safe place to sleep at night, I gave and gave generously. One day, as I sat at a toy give-away, a mother and her children walked by the trash can after getting their toys. The mother stated, "I waited in line for this shit!" She tossed the small doll she had for the baby and told the other children to toss that shit. I looked back on the past few months and all the work and long hours that went into that toy-drive and all the people that had donated money and toys. I recalled getting on the phone and begging people for donations. I remembered the long days where I missed my own kids to be out doing things for this toy-drive. And it was at that moment that I took my cup of coffee, walked over to the trash can that now held the doll and other toys, took the lid off my coffee and poured it out over the toys. I figured if my time wasn't worth the toys in the trash can, at least now I was the one that shitted all over my own work. No Rev. you got it wrong! I don't owe that good or the bad people of those neighborhoods anything!
See, when my kids were in the Boy Scouts and my daughter was in the Girl Scouts, they spent their afternoons at the Y and their summers camping. That's what I was working for. See Rev, if that mother wants to live that lifestyle, I am fine with it because the truth be told...she isn't going to make it in my world, and her thug lifestyle isn't going to make it in my world. I can't even tell you when the last time I heard a gunshot in my neighborhood. So you can keep preaching to the choir Rev and all the while passing around the request for donations. I stopped giving that day in December 2008. (- Raven, July 29, 2015 at 3:57 p.m)
