      I totally get that.
      I've personally been into Vulture Culture for many years now, infact I've had many specimens much longer than any of my current or past pets... so for me, preserving my animals after they've died is an easy way to help me cope with their loss.. I view them as art, and art lives on forever. But I fully respect anyone who doesn't wish to preserve their pets in that way. We all cope differently, and for many this just isn't the way.

    • @mollykelday

      I like that they almost get a second life they didn't get to live, if that makes sense. Now that he's preserved them, he can see them everyday and appreciate them like he would've been able to if they'd have lived. However, there's no way I could do this with my pets either.

    I loved how thorough this video was. It was all well explained and it is helping me with my own project. I just don't like/appreciate how you refer to the animals.
    Their bodies aren't a waste if they decay naturally or "have no purpose." They look beautiful and this is a wonderful way to remember them, but their life isn't worthless if you can't do anything with their bodies after death. Human bodies aren't worthless if they aren't preserved so neither is any other animal. Why is every animals worthless if every part of them is not used except humans? Just some food for thought because it came off a bit cruel when you said it is out of respect for the animal, while claiming their bodies go to waste or have no meaning if not used.

    This video was very well done, great job. I was hoping you could help me with something though.
    I found a wet specimen baby shark at a antique store. It's really neat and it looks really old. Some of the fluid is brownish and there's another fluid in small amounts that looks like blood that maybe excreted after being set in the solution. I was hoping to transfer the shark to a new container with fresh fluids. Could you describe the process I could follow to do this? Or is it even sensible?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      I think this depends on what fluid the shark is in currently... I'm by no means an expert, but I imagine if you were to take it out and replace it with 70% alcohol that'd probably be just fine.

    Hello, my name is Sarah and I am a senior in high school. I am currently writing my final senior paper on exotic animals and the exotic animal trade. For part of my grade I need to interview someone and ask them a few questions on the subject, and I thought of you because I watch your videos. I was hoping I could just ask you a few questions on your view on the exotic animal trade and maybe a few questions about your animals. Thank you for your time! I’ll comment with some questions, and if you by chance get the time to respond to any of them I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
    What do you think the biggest impact is when it comes to the illegal exotic animal trade?
    Do you think it can be beneficial to own exotic animals? Such as some species whose numbers are dwindling in the wild?
    Do you think there should be a line when it comes to what animals can be privately owned or when it comes to regulations on exotic animals?
    How do you get your animals? Through breeders?
    What made you want exotic animals? Like Blue?
    Do you think only certain people should have certain exotic animals, by making people go through a permit process and making sure they have the proper setup?
    Do you need a permit for any of your animals?
    Do you think it’s right for people to own animals found in the wild?
    Thank you very much :)

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад +1

      Sarah, thanks for reaching out, I'd be happy to give my opinion!
      What do you think the biggest impact is when it comes to the illegal exotic animal trade?
      The illegal trade in exotic animals is one of the most lucrative markets on the planet, meaning unimaginable numbers of wild animals are killed or captured to feed and support those desperate for money. While poaching is a beast of its own, the trade in live animals has just as many casualties - thousands and thousands of animals die briefly after capture, in transit, or after arriving at their destinations. Parasites, infections, disease, and lack of food and water are all factors. These casualties drastically cut down populations of animals in the wild, disrupting ecosystems and placing many species on the precipice of extinction. If animals are able to be captured and transported humanely, as a means of advancing scientific knowledge or establishing populations in captivity, I have little issue with the capture of exotic animals. However, that scenario is far from reality - the illegal trade in exotic animals is incredibly crippling to wild animals and the ecosystems they inhabit.
      Do you think it can be beneficial to own exotic animals? Such as some species whose numbers are dwindling in the wild?
      Absolutely. As someone who maintains a large collection of reptiles and amphibians, I take every chance I get to use them as a means of educating the general public. Many people never get the chance to touch a snake, to handle an insect, or to pet a lizard - I make it my goal to help others overcome their irrational fears and reconnect with the natural world. Apart from the educational benefits of maintaining exotic animals in captivity, captive populations of threatened, endangered, or even extinct-in-the-wild species are absolutely vital for preserving the biodiversity of the planet. I’m all for the proper keeping of exotic animals.
      Do you think there should be a line when it comes to what animals can be privately owned or when it comes to regulations on exotic animals?
      This is a difficult question, and one that’s always at the political forefront in my field. Personally, I believe that responsible, professional keepers should have few limits on what sort of animals they keep. However, mistakes can still happen, irresponsible keepers abound, and when cobras, crocodiles, or tigers escape - it’s a PR nightmare. Exotic animals on the loose threaten my hobby when members of the public who don’t understand the appeal of keeping animals get involved. So many people are unaware of the presence of exotic animals in their own communities - if they find out one has escaped in their area, they could pressure lawmakers to ban the animals I hold dear. There should be a line of sorts, but it’s difficult to determine where it needs to be drawn.
      How do you get your animals? Through breeders?
      The majority of my animals were bred in captivity by professional breeders. I have a boa constrictor from the Pacific Northwest, a blue tongue skink from Florida, and a python shipped to me from North Texas. I only purchase animals from reputable individuals if at all possible.
      What made you want exotic animals? Like Blue?
      I’ve always been fascinated by the natural world, and I’ve always had at least a few animals in my house at a time. As a kid, I wanted to go into paleontology, and as I grew, my passion evolved with me and I became fascinated by living animals such as reptiles and amphibians. I intend to make it my life’s purpose to preserve the biodiversity of the planet as best I can - the world needs it now more than ever.
      Do you think only certain people should have certain exotic animals, by making people go through a permit process and making sure they have the proper setup?
      This is an interesting proposition, but it would be hard to implement and would result in a lot of displaced animals. I believe that in a perfect world this would be the case, but realistically, I don’t think it should happen. The closest we can get is to educate buyers and keepers of exotic animals on the proper care and requirements of the animals they work with.
      Do you need a permit for any of your animals?
      No, I don’t. Where I live, permits are required for large constricting snakes, venomous snakes, and crocodilians.
      Do you think it’s right for people to own animals found in the wild?
      On a case-by-case basis, there are times when this is fine. However, if it can be avoided, it’s really best to go the extra step and find animals born and bred in captivity.

      I do have a new room tour which should be coming out this Friday! A video focusing on only the reptiles is a good idea too though - I'll definitely keep it in mind

    How would you put it into the animal (as you said if it's a larger animal)

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      A pretty fine syringe would do the job, if you inject the formalin into thicker areas and large muscle masses - there's a link to the full guide I used in the video description

    will this work for amphibians?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      Yes, but as they dry out so easily, I'd ease them into the 70% solution gradually - start with a 40% alcohol, 60% water solution and increase from there over the course of a week or so.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper

      I've seen that done for invertebrates, but I don't think it'd work great for vertebrates in the long term. Plus, bubbles would be a pain.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      Ha, no - sadly anything but pure alcohol is likely to harm the specimen in some way.

    • @douglaswhi6980
      @douglaswhi6980 7 лет назад

      AfroHerpkeeper shame, I'm in the UK so it's hard to source the liquids needed. Ile just have to stick to the smelliest way, by drying them slow.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      Rubbing alcohol works! It's usually a 70% solution, which is just right. Formalin might be a bit harder to find, but I believe you could either find it in a drugstore or order it online.

    • @douglaswhi6980
      @douglaswhi6980 7 лет назад

      AfroHerpkeeper good thinking batman. Ile give the 70% a go. Thanks for the advice.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 лет назад

      These two were so frail by the time I received them that one died of dehydration, and the other fell about two inches and cracked its' spine. I felt absolutely awful but there really wasn't much I could've done to prevent it.

      For Coleonyx species, sand is a great option. No risk of impaction if they're otherwise healthy.

      I live in Texas and every night I see about 10 geckos that look similar to these, (idk if they are the same or not, I'm not much of a gecko expert) outside on my windows catching bugs. They're mean! They bite the heck outta me when I try to relocate them after they get inside. 😂
