I'm still just flabbergasted every time I watch this and her scratch board video. I had to follow her on Instagram. For as busy as her work looks, there is a sense of serenity of it due to the excercise of the mediums. It's simply phenomenal. I could look at them all day long and get lost in them. This video inspired me and I'm going to give this process a shot. I'll have to share what comes of it in discord.
This is so inspiring. I’ve been pretty frustrated with my art recently since all I seem to be able to draw are things that are assigned in class. Nothing on my own terms. This video has such great points on the process work and wow, I am sure gonna try again to find my own process that I enjoy. Thank you so much!

Same! And I started to realize that sometimes it's the class assignments that are making me feel frustrated, stifled and artistically drained. I don't know how it is for others, but in a class setting, depending on the instructor, it's very easy for me to become exhausted with art when I'm being pushed (and graded) to use mediums that I do not like, and draw things that I don't want to draw. I had an instructor who made the class draw contour lines of pinecones, and to draw without lifting the pencil. This went on for two months, every class meeting for 3 hours straight, including homework. It was frustrating, and exhausting and it sucked the love and excitement out of drawing.
Thanks for watching! Song is incredible, hopefully she'll be back for more videos soon :) Here's another video where she demos scratchboard drawing, feel free to check it out: ruclips.net/video/Ss5zre_fbTk/видео.html - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I am lucky to stumble upon this video what a great and different techniques she has used while drawing and interviewer also asked nice set of questions through which I am able to understand her drawing process thank you very much 🙏 Love from India 🇮🇳 ❤️

It is a tart pan. 😉 I do both graphite and pen and ink drawing. I like to use other materials too, like charcoal or colored pencil, when it adds another dimension to the final piece. I did tattoo for 15 years, so I think that made a huge difference in how I approach pen and inks and all drawing really. Tattoo requires a certain pace and hand movements and pressures that are gestural and deliberate and become more precise with repetition. Probably why she's "sooo fast." 😊 Thank u both! 💓
I found the process fascinating. I've always found it difficult to get get good tonal gradations using pen & ink - using pencil to help with the process never occurred to me. Can't wait to try it out.
Pen and ink is a whole other language, especially if you're coming from using pencils only! It's a weird adjustment, but once you get the hang of it it's incredible :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
On drawing fast. I can't do hatching slowly. I start with the first couple strokes at a slow speed and then I just take off. If I go slowly, my lines are inaccurate and wobbly.... which I also sometimes use as a technique.
thank you so much! the pencil stays from now on, finding the right consistency of gradient in ink has been such a bane, even to the point where every stroke almost varied too much. a 0.1 working with pencil is producing some nice results even whilst writing this comment haha
This was so amazing. I absolutely love using both ink and graphite. Ive tried using them together and it always comes out muddy, like what Mrs. Lieu said. I have matte medium in my closet and am looking forward to practicing this technique in my sketchbook! Thank you Ms.Kang!!!

What a coincidence. I revived my pen and ink drawing recently, going from abstract designs to a more realistic one today that I am happy with. I loved the techniques in this video and will give them a try. Thank you. A great tutorial.
Amazing! Thank you so much I feel like human eye will always complete the drawing, so when you leave a small margin for interpretation it works often well because the pencil scribbles end up giving an impression of the actual thing and human brain when seeing that makes a connection
So Glad I found this. I actually have a shaded drawing I've been itching to use ink on but was uncertain about the outcome of the two together. Your work is amazing, thank you so much for sharing😀
Grelt inspiration to watch these drawing and I really like the flexibility of the way the graphite is used - thank you for all the information of materials used - I am definitely going to try the matte medium

I watched this last night as I have always love pen and ink but have never combined it with pencil. Her first drawing isn't liquid soluble, and matte medium sort of acts like a casing! It preserves lines, and doesn't eat away at them. Thank you so much for watching :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
The part about an eraser being a distraction I found to be true. I think it's more affective to treat it as another pencil; a way to carve out new shapes, rather than to undo something. Pencil, carves out shapes of darks, whereas the eraser carves out shapes of light.
I forgot to ask this, but how can she make sure that the lighting on this piece is consistent? There's a lot of parts/details to the drawing, and i would imagine myself getting lost into those stuff and forget about lighting 😅
Haha, that's a great question! Song is so practiced with this medium that it probably comes easily to her. You can always sketch in light and shadows with pencil though, before you go over it in pen :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

I've been doing so much painting lately that I've felt lost going back to pencil and ink (which used to be my bread and butter)- this helped a lot and I'm excited to go try some of these technique's!! Also that matte medium layer is everything I've been looking for to help me transition from the pencil to the ink!
Now that I have watched this several times, intrigued, I notice that we don't get to see some of the pencil work/technique. I for one would like to see at least 10 mins of that, pretty please.
@@artprof That has me excited because this one has caused me to experiment with the pencil & ink, then I did color pencil on top of that. Now I am doing and adding watercolor BEFORE the color pencil (waiting for the nib pens first). Thanks for the inspiration Art Prof.
Cold wax over graphite, especially graphite that’s placed over a medium, has a tendency to pick up the particles and move it where you might not want it. That’s probably also the reason why she finishes it with a spray instead of another layer of matte medium. Her first application of matte medium couldn’t be replaced with cold wax neither because of 1) the wandering graphite issue and 2) the next ink layer would behave differently. The fine liner tips will get clogged as it picks up the wax and the ink marks won’t absorb into the wax. Instead it will sit on top and make it much easier to smear.

That's a great suggestion! Stay tuned, maybe we'll have Song back in the future :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
@@artprof That has me excited because this one has caused me to experiment with the pencil & ink, then I did color pencil on top of that. Now I am doing and adding watercolor BEFORE the color pencil (waiting for the nib pens first). Thanks for the inspiration Art Prof.
We have another tutorial with Song coming soon, you can watch the preview here: ruclips.net/video/wWvkZ79ur18/видео.html -Prof Lieu

Ink had me thinking I did not know how to draw until I went back to pencil.
I know, I went through the same thing! Ballpoint pen is actually a great mid-way medium to use :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
@@artprof Oooh. Okay I'm going to try that!
The real 50 Shades of Grey
Use cold wax instead of acrylic for coating. Much better
Actually using half used pens is pretty similar to using pencil
I agree, I love using fading pens! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
