My guess is the transmission buttons were designed that way, with different feel and shape to each one so you would definitely know the one you touch without looking is the one you want. Actually common on many Honda models too. No two buttons are alike for a reason. Noticed this driving auction cars on a lot as a job.
Actually, any controls shaped uniquely are going to be easier to find without looking compared to some brands which make everything similar shape which takes your eyes off the road to find the control you want. Good design.
Agreed. Once you use it a few times, it's really easy to use without looking. The three most common buttons are the easiest. That’s really not saying much. Acura’s have looked ghastly since 2008, or 15 years ago. You might be too young to remember the ghastly bird beak grill.
Same here. The A-spec may not turn heads, but I like it being that way. My A-spec is well-rounded and always spawns impressive responses if I bring a friend. I've driven several BMWs, and while I can certainly get better performance out of them, I still chose the TLX because I found the car to be much more friendly from the start. There are a few weird aspects with the infotainment system, but I moved past them within a week of ownership. I used to drive a Subaru Outback, which is rated specifically for safety, but I actually feel safer in the TLX because the ergonomics are easier and reduce how long I get distracted if I need to handle a phone call or change the music. We're obviously talking about completely different types of cars here, and that's a reasonable argument. However, I believe Subaru(and most other brands!) could do a better job of designing the controls favoring quick access by the driver, which then helps return the driver's focus back to the road faster. Acura definitely hit a grand slam with the TLX, as well as the further performance models.
7:30. I really appreciate that. True it hurts the styling but its nice to see someone caring a little about repair cost in a modern car. So much expensive technology that punishes you for any little mistake with a 3 or 4 digit repair bill. Side mirrors with cameras and sensors in them, clip the side of your garage, and what should be an "oh darn, scratched the mirror housing" turns into "Crap, all this stuff is broken, now have to dump vast quantities of money into replacing it".

After sitting in the TLX rear seat with the front set to my position, it's perfectly fine if you're 6 feet tall or less. It's about the same space as a 3-series and a little better than the Lexus IS and Genesis G70.
Of course but since the category of this car is "daily driver sedan with extra performance" rather than a full on sports car that's small / light or a two seater, it's nice to know you can take some friends in the back if needed... I own a TLX myself, and while I don't use the back seats a ton, they have come in handy every now and then. And I can put a kid's seat back there too ...
@@WakanaGojo86 Also, this car is NOT rear-biased. SH-AWD is awesome, sure, but it's not rear biased, it only sends more power to the back when needed, it usually sends more to the front (which is perfectly fine), and adds torque vectoring in turns if you accelerate out of them. I guess it kinda acts a bit like it was rear biased where it counts, even though for fuel economy purposes, it's pulling from the front with less drivetrain losses. The TLX has surprisingly good fuel economy, I've done 35mpg on my 3.5L V6 ... !

Here’s my issue with Doug’s driving reviews: never shows him really pushing a car around corners or on a track to really talk about it’s handling and driving experience etc. only shows highway clips. @@alanleclair1 theTopher made great video on this car as well. In which he kept reiterating how amazingly this car handles with this SH-AWD system, which I dont think doug even mentioned
As I’ve watched most of Doug’s videos over the years, I’ve noticed a quick , heavy steering rack = fantastic handling. Any car can have a responsive steering rack, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it has great steering. There are many other components that go into that, such as steering feel, corner exit, suspension tuning in relation to steering/cornering and so on. And to your point, it’s also very difficult to give a proper verdict when you push it around an on ramp and drive it on the highway. Doug isn’t who I go for when I want to understand driving dynamics. He’s who I go to when I want a thorough overview of a vehicle’s features. And I suspect it’ll always be that way, which is fine! 🤷♂️
To me Doug is entertainer. Not a car enthusiast or reviewer. I also agree on savage geese. Fun to watch and they know what they are talking about. Its not Doug's quick 30 min drive and call it a review. I still enjoy watching Dougs videos.
Yeah, pulling lateral G's are something safer done on a track and not on the public roads though. Nothing like reviewing a car that's not yours and putting it into a utility pole trying to find the limits of it's handling.
I have a big respect for Honda when he explained the decision making for that plate on the front, most European car companies wouldn't care about their customer's wallet and just put it on the front for styling.
I saw one on the road i was like "Thats a Acura". Thinking of getting one or the Infinity G55. The standard wheels look better to me. Another great review.
Forget Acura BMW or Ferrari I want to see a review of Toyota Celica particularly a 94 model year, please, I know someone who will happily let you review it.
From what I understand the new American "RLX" is badged as a Honda Legend from Japan. I still feel there will be nothing like the original Acura Legend. Those were one of a kind.
I haven't purchased a vehicle since 2004, so to me the Acura TLX Type S is very impressive. I also prefer Japanese engineering/reliability over BMW, Audi, or Mercedes. I'm getting one in white with ebony interior and blacked-out badges.
I looked everywhere and couldn't find one, they are all sold out, i ended up getting the White on red 2022 TLX Aspec. Great Value and extremely reliable. Cant wait to pick it up.
Conflicting title with the way it was reviewed. That said, here is my opinion of the Type S (if anybody cares) coming from an enthusiast who's logged many miles in GT3's, M2's, R8, etc. Now into my 50's, I was looking for a car that wouldn't beat me up on the daily, but would also give me a great driver's experience when called upon. Being a BMW guy for so long, I drove the m340i. The B58 is great but that's it. Steering disconnected, exterior/interior dead average. I went and drove the type S at the local Acura dealership. The first turn I took blew my mind. The whole "it handles like it's on rails" is literally what this car does. I decided to order the car and just had my first week in it, here are my thoughts. Appearance: there is not a better looking car(imo) in this or a class above. The surfacing is incredible and I can't believe what they did with the hood sheet metal. Interior: Loving the look of it, seats are very supportive, and the drivers perch is just about as good as it gets. Not loving the touchpad as I got so used to the I-drive wheel in bmw's, however, it becomes easier everyday. Engine/sound: it pulls very well down low. If you floor it at 85, she doesn't pop, but moves along quite well. I love the sound and definitely adds to the experience. Transmission: In sport mode, it might be the most aggressive transmission I've ever experienced. It's just hungry to shift at any moment and very quick - maybe a bit too aggressive for every situation. Steering: the ratio is short so it's very quick off center - doesn't get much better than this. Handling: Flat and rotates with surprising ease as the SH-awd feels like rear-steer - plenty of mechanical grip from the double wish-bone (i would have gone with a wider rear tire, maybe a 275) Highway ride: Out on the open road it feels phenominal! Buttoned down is an understatement as I can't say enough about the quality feel of this car. Anyone who says the car is too heavy has not driven it. It was designed to be the enthusiasts daily, not a nurburgring/track record breaker. All of the settings within the adaptive suspension work as intended. Spec is Platinum white with performance wheels. This car at 55k is the best new car experience out there for the money and level of refinement, hands down!!!
I’m really confused. Everyone else I’ve seen review this raves about how great it handles and how Acura has an incredible AWD system with awesome progressive steering ratios. Doug is the first one I’ve seen complain about the handling, SH-AWD is an amazing system

Also Doug, you're a massive man. Back seat, pfft!
Park is at the very top, reverse is a trigger, and drive is a round, framed button at the very bottom. I prefer it to some Germans where its a shifter but the park button is on the shifter itself.

i have this car in the a-spec version and it really is a well rounded sport sedan with extra power, i disagree with the styling score i think they nailed it out of the park, i honestly think it is probably of of the, if not the best designed sedans to come out within the past 5 years
That’s really not saying much.
Doug is the first one I’ve seen complain about the handling, SH-AWD is an amazing system
it’s because everyone else had this car at acuras press event... youll start to see the truth with more reviews coming now that people can get these on the street
@@neekjp actually quite a few people have revised them on the street and said they loved the handling. If you’re denying SH-AWD is a top 2 all wheel drive system you haven’t driven a modern Acura enough.
@@ghamrick8183 i drive them all the time. not a fan but to each their own. i am fortunate enough to work in the industry and i prefer the offerings from most european manufacturers
@@neekjp the press event was "go drive it on the street this morning for a few hours and then come to the track this afternoon... So everyone who drove it at Laguna Seca also took it to the street ...
@@MrTresto yes but it’s a press event. if you want to be invited to their next press event you better not say anything negative.
The touch pad needs small dots on the pad to represent each location on the screen..
It might help a bit... But not for CarPlay or Android Auto. Those systems are designed specifically for touchscreens.
It has clean classic lines, smile inducing performance, a unique colour, Relatively reasonable price. Pretty much all u need in a car.
20 years later, it will be collector's item.
@@mike-uw6wt you'd be surprised. Any normal car with a performance version is almost always a collectors car. Get your head out of your ass
@@mbtt7420 yeah that guy is an idiot 😂 Acura just change the game
@@mbtt7420 exactly. Companies gotta sell large volumes of boring cars before they make the fun ones!
Probably the most reliable and easy to maintain car in its class; Merc C43, BMW 340, Audi S4 / S5
