  • Step back to a sunny day at San Diego's Naval Air Station North Island in August 1967 as crowds watch the Blue Angels flying Grumman F-11 Tigers. Army parachutists using canopies typical of that era waft down. Motion picture pilot Frank Tallman taxis and flies his vintage Boeing Model 100 variant of the F4B and P-12 families. Bill Fornof demonstrates his bronze F8F Bearcat as Blue Angels pilots watch closely. Service members, some with injuries, disembark from a helicopter.

Fabulous video. Bill Fornof is my father. Wonderful to see a new movie of his flying.

I was volunteer at planes of fame air museum and we brought several Navy WWII aircraft down for that show. The Navy requested we bring some down. In exchange, we got to use facilities to do maintenance. Stayed on base for the week leading up to the show. Our planes were sitting out on a tarmac. Lot of navy folks came over to look. We had a TBM Avenger out there. A career navy guy came over to take a look as he was a crew chief on one! Turns out, ours was his old bird!! What are the odds!!! I was 24 then. Good times!!

Wow! To think that I would be born in December of that year! And work at NAS North Island for a bit while in Hight School!

Love it, aircraft is my life

I would have enjoyed that air show. But I was in Vietnam just starting my 1 year tour. Viewed a few air shows of a different kind. Enjoyed the film.

OMG!! The memories of that day ... as a 17-year old with my Dad (employed at NASNI in the O&R Dept.) and younger brother. Still have the photos I took with my Kodak camera!! What a sweet treat, thanks for uploading the footage.

I wish they could do air shows again at North Island Naval Air Station.

Such awesome footage! I would’ve been three years old. The vintage aircraft readily available back then is a far cry off today. Pretty awesome to see the Blue Angels and their F-11’s take off in fingertip!

Too bad not more footage! Just a year later, I would find myself at San Diego RTC boot camp, and two years later, after electronics A school plus 2x "C" schools on GCA RADAR equipment, I would find myself at then NAS Miramar for 2, and then later extended to 4 years. ETR-2, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. GREAT airshow at Miramar in the 70's and they were of course flying F-4's then.

What a treat, to visit 1967 in airshow footage! It’s the first time for me seeing footage of Bill Fornoff flying aerobatics in his F8F.
