- Navy photographers, always first rate, used high-speed 35-millimeter motion picture cameras for films evaluating landings on USS Lexington, CV-2, as well as other launch and flight footage. The presence of Boeing F4B-4 biplane fighters with raised headrests suggests at least some of this footage was made around 1932 or later. And the sister ship to Lexington, USS Saratoga, is seen in some views, identifiable by the large vertical black stripe painted on Saratoga's funnel to guide planes to the right carrier.
The views of barrel-shaped Grumman F2F biplanes, including views of the XF2F-1 prototype, place this material between 1933 and probably 1935, when production deliveries of F2Fs began.
Smokescreens were a viable tool of the era to shield fleets from attacking ships, and the planes of Lexington lay down a screen in this film.
Imagine the excitement of being on the front of carrier innovation in the 1930s, honing techniques that would later contribute to victory in World War II.

Yes -- we were very fortunate as a nation that the Navy worked diligently on improving carrier operations in the decade before the war. Thanks, as always, for watching and commenting!
I love these historic films from the past. Thanks for posting.
It is always exciting to find these gems. Glad you enjoy them.
What a fascinating life those naval aviators had at the time, and it was all in their hands, feet and eyes, more relatable to us present day amateurs than the equivalent modern day technology.
Thanks for posting these images lost to time.
You are very welcome. Yes, there is something relatable about the manual coordination required.
Absolutely beautiful footage. USN Aviation, the world's finest!

These films from the 1930s are terrific. I liked the Felix the Cat insignia on some of the planes and Lexington's 8in guns. Alas for color film in the way back! Thanks as always.
You are always welcome. Yeah, sometimes color film adds to it, but there is something evocative about old black-and-white too.
@@airailimages You are certainly right about the B&W film but this was a very colorful period.
Always great to see how we got to where we are today. Great video as always.
