- Steam has grown into the dominant platform for game distribution. How did we get from buying games on optical media to using Steam for most of our gaming needs?

Oh Steam. I used to hate having it installed and now I'd feel naked without it.
I know. It may be DRM at its base(although publishers can make their games DRM-free if they wish) but, damn, does it have a lot of useful features.
I love you
Adam y r u here jk
I use to hate it to but in 2005ish I bought a pc and seven games back when you had to buy games on disk or software whatever lol and I hated steam and having to download that and put my gaming licenses keys into steam. Well I got bored pc gaming and bought a ps4 lol I know how could you get bored with pc games lol but I did and sold my computer. Well years later in 2018 just a few months ago I went through the same thing with the ps4 so instead of selling the ps4 I bought a gaming laptop the Lenovo legion y520 the best model you can buy of the 520 at that. Well I thought damn I gotta rebuy all those games so I downloaded steam and this was at tax time so I had plenty of money to spend well steam downloads and would you look at that all the game I bought back in 2005 all the games where still there and downloadable off my steam account lol so I instantly had a library of games and I redownloaded them all and after that I absolutely LOVE STEAM NOW LOL!
Same 4 years later after you :)
My wallet's worst nightmare.

Steam literally has made getting games and keeping them up to date easier than pirating.
auhashuashu
Yes money is not worth the stress
I know this comment is pretty ancient, but piracy has advanced too. Some sites have systems that just add the games into your google drive in Uber compressed formats, allowing you to only have to download a fraction of the games size, making it the defacto choice for people with super restricted internet.
@@0rgaSMM That's the reason i game on console and not PC i hate how consoles have weak specs ( but i hate DRM even more ) and was about to go with a high end gaming PC but then i realized PC gaming is almost DRM only and GOG has almost no modern games so i am stuck with weak consoles.
Well i do have a GOG account and some modern games and old ones, but to buy a high end system for a handfull of modern games no.
And not all games have achievements or they come later because at first a Plague Tale Innocence and Kingdom Come: Deliverance did not have them either i believe.
Darksiders 1 and 2 still don't have them ( but 3 and Genesis do ) same goes for Batman Arkham Knight but the other Batman Arkham games do.
John Stamos confirmed as playable character in Half Life 3.

T.J. Da Gamer so? I don't even play that anymore.
+RoxasReaper I'm sorry, but Origin has improved a lot recently, I'd say its the third best platform for PC gamers, nr 1 being Steam, nr 2 GOG and nr 3 Origin, Uplay, WB's platform, Square Enix are a lot worse.
+Pira Just because you do not play it, does not mean that nobody else does as well.

They even have there own version of reddit awards "edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger."
I come from the future.
Valve made their own headset and you can play half life 3 on it
Wait I cracked the code!
Half Life: alyx is just half life 1.5, so playing it 2 times will get you to Half life 3! :D

Half-Life is a techdemo Project.
Valve only releases Half-Life whenever a new iteration of their engine gets released.
Half-Life 1 -> GldSrc Engine
Half-Life 2 -> Source Engine
Half-Life 3 -> Source 2 Engine
Since Source 2 is actually in development I would bet my whole savings that in the next 5 years (if Source 2 gets released in this timeframe) will be home to a HL 3 release.
PEACE OUT!
You were right :)
mattini no it's just getting port to source 2
you were right they released alyx lol
Lmao idiot
You were wrong. Gibs me your savings. After this video was released Valve came out and said they're not working on HL3, and never will. Alyx was what came out instead. You should have seen it coming.
i have a quicker explanation for steam:
Steam is the gas produced when you boil water
+InFinitY PhilliP wtf dude
+InFinitY PhilliP a caveman?
***** my grave scared the shit out of me. im never getting back in it
Actually water vapour is the gas produced when you boil water. Steam is the suspended tiny water droplets in the air that form immediately after boiling.
*Please* kill me
I wonder if anybody actually called him "Joe" and lived to tell about it.
I didn't know that steam was created by valve
._.
Steams Source is Valve
And Steam goes through a Steampipe.
Its7up +1
I thin what some people isnt getting is that my earlier comment here have 3 words that all is Valve: Valve, Source and Steam. just one word that isnt,
I'd trade every M&M I'll ever eat for HL-3 to _finally_ be released.. Hell, I'll even throw in a kidney stone or 3.
Did you have to go from M&M to kidney stone?

Rather have a hard copy DVD
Tell me about it right. I appreciate this systems accessibility etc. but I'd rather have a hard copy all day, maybe I'm just old fashioned.
funny how I actually prefer Steam DRM over no DRM at all. Because it's a DRM done right, there is friend list, guides, achievements, messaging and etc. And all my games are in one place, in one account.
Dead Inside you can have all that and make it able to run without even opening steam
Erick Illescas sure you can, but I better just have one executable to run.
Steam is a pretty good service but it still has its problems. And if you have a problem, good luck getting any help before you solve it on your own. Or not.
Frankly though, a large part of their business is based on ignorance (don't get all offended, "ignorance just means "don't know", it doesn't mean stupid). People talk about "Steam sales" as though Steam is the only place to get games at a discount. There are a number of other digital distributors which match or beat Steam's prices on older games. And if you want a discount on a new title Steam is pretty much a "list price only" service. You can pre-order brand new games from other places for 20-25% off, sometimes even more.
I'm not anti-Steam; I just am afraid it is becoming monopoly size and that isn't a good thing. I'm concerned about gamers new to the PC world thinking Steam is the only place to buy PC games. PC gaming is much bigger than any one service.
+Penterax good or bad ubisoft and EA force you to play their games on their platform even though you may have it through steam. so right there a big portion of AAA crap that does sell very well is through other platforms
Penterax thanks man, I use to think I can only buy from steam
Lulz
@@TheGuard72 Well by your stupid ass logic... Valve not only forces you to play their games on Steam... But their games are not even available anywhere else...
I remember steam back in the day where I only had it for half life 1 & 2 and it was just there cause I had to have it haha. And I was a bit more slow to use steam to buy all my PC games but one of my friends got me started with showing me the sales! Oh the sales!!!!

I didn't know (According to this video) that Steam had "cleaned up their act." I was a relatively early adopter and I simply got tired, VERY tired on how Steam started controlling pretty much EVERYTHING around games you bought from them, not to mention privacy "issues." So I dumped 'em, years ago.
Maybe I'll go back but I'm not certain. After all, it commonly stated that "It costs five (or seven or 10) times as much to ATTRACT a NEW customer than it is to KEEP a current customer. Many companies fail to understand this simple concept. Hopefully Steam, as I said, HAS "cleaned up their act.)
So this means...
Half Life 3 Confirmed!
All hail lord GabeN !!
All hail Lord Gaben!
For anyone wondering about SteamOS AFAP (which aparently is not worth mentioning as part of this Steam video):
- An stable Linux distro with drivers preinstalled and constantly updated,
- completely usable with any controller (Steam approved or not) out-of-the-box,
- still growing in catalog and features,
- more competitive by the day, and
- much better than a console performance-wise (and in the couch-multiplayer front).
you realise back in 2016, Linus basically foretold us that Half Life Alex was coming..... he DROPPED that one early (boom tish!)

That was strange he didn't mention SteamOS, Steam Controller, Steam link. I'm currently running SteamOS on my gaming computer and moved it to the living room, to use it only with the steam controller.
+Marcus Larborg cool
Steam in 10 words or less
"Games, but update and money's"
It would be nice if at E3 2016 Valve had a conference talking about not-so-interesting stuff, but at the very end, when people are starting to leave, the turn off the lights again, start some suspense music, and a big "3" comes out through the projector. No one talking about it, no information (maybe an aproximate date, but nothing else)
+IVAN3DX Or maybe, let's say on 25/05/16, steam updates, and for a few seconds, the only thing visible on screen is a lambda with a 3, and then return to things as usual.
you forgot to mention that steam was created to play valve games online. At first I had to instal steam just to play CS, not really because I had valve games. There was nothing else there except for the platorm to play online games.
In steams agreement and EULA, they seem to represent that they are a subscription service, so ALL those games you purchased with your hard earned money are not really yours to begin with.
So my question is, if steam says they are a subscription service, why are people purchasing each game that cost well into $60 or more. ??
And are those games your purchased with your hard earned money sweat and tears each week really yours ??
Can steam ban someone from the steam application and ban you from the games You spent your hard earned money on ??
People have actual accounts to each of those games within the developers gaming sites. but if steam believes they can ban you, what happens with all your games.??
And what happens to your signed up accounts you have for each game you play.?? many people have Thousands and some have large hundreds amounts of games,
That was all pay for with hard earned cash. Many games including those AAA titles dont come cheap as they hit well into the $60+ range each game.....
So again with the main question, are those really not your games ? Are you really subscribing to steam service while still paying $60 or more for those AAA games ??
Were we better off when games was on actual DVD and CD's that your purchased and took home ???
Dont get me wrong, I love steam because its a huge gaming library in one place.... Im just a bit worried now that Ive seen people get banned very easily on steam and also seeing this new
Subscription thingy within their ecosystem & eula. ive seen people get banned on steam and those people had around 1-k ~2-k games in their library.
So I kinda get very worried about it.
They only use it against cheaters in games.
too long didnt read
"Many people have thousands and some have large hundreds amounts of games", honestly if they are so stupid to have invested their money to a digital service, I don't care for them, I'm with Steam in this.
@@namelessguy199 And cheating in a game is a serious reason to lose your games that you paid for? What is this, having 1 billion $ in GTA, or any other childish nonsense is some kind of crime?
yeah they can just take away your games. i once bought a gome on there, the game did not work, so i got a refund they took the game and refunded me less than i paid. not counting that i cannot resell my own games
No wonder that Steam is the dominating platform when all other ones are cancerous.... UPlay, Origin ...

I always cracked my games. or at least i used to do so, but since steam came into my notebook, it doesnt happen anymore. Games dont crash, they are always up to date, you can play with friends and spend a good time without raging. I really recommend you all start buying games in steam. its awesome.
Steam used to be terrible in countries with bad or extremely expensive bandwidth. Back with the DRM woes I literally had so many games that I bought a physical copy of (because I didn't have access to internet infrastructure to download it) that I couldn't play because Steam required me to download a patch that was bigger than the game itself. This problem is mostly gone with current games but still, in my country at least, the vast majority of the population can't utilize Steam of lack of infrastructure. They would have to pay around $200 for the bandwidth require to download an average AAA title (that's before the updates). So for us physical distribution is still king, and probably will be for a long time still.
Thanks for the quick history of Steam. Maybe Half-life 3 is going to be a VR game?
Aspiration it happened hahaha
Quicker explanation what is valve..
A gamestop for games
Steam as fast as possible...
Steam is a massive online library of games that also acts as a social network for gamers where they can share, download and play games together. Membership is free as are some of the games available. Of the games that require payment, most end up with some form of discount applied, usually but not limited to a discounted sale price based on the recommended retail price.
Didn't take 5 and a half minutes. :D
You’re right. Didn’t bring half life 3, but VR did bring Half Life Alyx
Thankfully valve did amazing with VR, with their Index.
And turns out all along they were working on HL3, Half-Life Alyx! Pretty sure they began development super early on because steam creating a half like game for vr needed to perfect vr before making the game for vr.
Half life Alyx isn't Half life alyx, but it's absolutely amazing
Origin As Fast As Possible!
*****
yes.
+Ivan Ivanov Ivanovitch Ivanovski Origin is actually pretty good. Their customer support is actually amazing, they did refunds a lot sooner than steam, they have sales and they do actually offer decent games for free every month, + origin access.
Origin is by far the 3rd best digital distribution software out there, with probably GOG as close second.
+Ivan Ivanov Ivanovitch Ivanovski Why don't you like it?
+Pedro Marques well....kinda. It's a great platform....for EA games. Anything Third Party on Origin is pretty much a hell to support.
Since EA controls most of the IP's of the games they sell they don't have to confer and reffer to other publishers for sales informations and contracting them, since they ARE the primary publisher.
same for Ubisoft (uplay has gotten better), they're both great for support.
But it's a horrible resource hog for most people still, it doesn't work in numerous regions, and if you thought the region locked prices were bad on steam, you're in for a hell shock when you see origin in some of the more....unstable regions. not to mention a lot of its games are quietly removed and or multiplayer shut down over time to make room for newer releases.
Steam overall is the best outcome we could ever have with a 3rd and primary distributor. EA won't do that, Ubisoft won't do that, and GoG (while a nice idea) has already seen a bit of bad press speaking as an investor. take the witcher 3, yes people bought a lot of the games from GoG...but that was mostly self advertisement, CDproject is having a lot of problems gaining some interesting third parties to participate because though the games sold well on GoG (mostly the witcher 3 sadly) there was also an easy hassle free way for games to be uploaded to places like the pirate bay, kickasstorrents, etc, with hassle free support. and while I'm not entirely against pirating, I am a realist in seeing the potential profit loss for something like this.
+Ivan Ivanov Ivanovitch Ivanovski
uplay is still the worst
I was one of those gamers that was steaming mad at valve for Steam's DRM back in the day. I like to think I got over that eventually, but when I consider that my GoG library is more than 10 times the size my Steam library, I realize I still haven't gotten over those early days, and I'm ok with that.
Greetings from the future, where the Steam store does have DRM-free (defined primarily as not needing the Steam client in order to run) titles available but where what most people care about is getting their non-Steam titles *integrated into* the Steam launcher to take advantage of Steam's controller mapping, VR and remote play implementations.
@@GSBarlev Yea, a mere 6 years later and I launch most of my games through steam (regardless of how acquired).
I think 2 specific humble bundles caused the change by making my my steam library vastly bigger than my GoG library so that I go to Steam if the "I am bored, lets find something I have not played in a while (if ever)" scenario comes up. Which as I get older seems to get more common.
I remember begging my parents to let me get steam. They didn't want their card to get automatically charged and thought it was a scam back 14 years ago.

I used to game a lot long ago, not so much these days but would like to do more. What I would like to know: do I *need* Steam to run games nowadays? I hate the idea. I like to buy games the old way. On a CD-ROM, or a downloaded executable, install it on Windows and play. No stuff with needing accounts, or having to install stuff like steam. I want to make sure that I can *always* re-install and play the game regardless of if Steam is still around or not.
So, are we forced to use the Steam ecosystem in 2024 or can I still buy standalone games that require nothing related to Steam whatsoever?
I use steam mainly as a social platform to voicechat with my buddies. It's really easy to route non-steam games through steam.

7 Years! I didn't even know Steam was for PCs and thought it was some game website... I grew up w/ GameCube, PS1, 360, and N64 and DS Lite. We had VCRs, CDs, and USBs growing up/ Now I'm 25 and learning about this Steam thing out of necessity because I wanna play Sonic Frontiers.
Steam was that program I had to have after buying HL2 at EB Games. Bringing it back to my internetless student housing to have it not able to install and or play. That's my introduction to steam. On the bright side i took my pc home the next weekend and installed it then.
