- Juliane Koepcke the daughter of German zoologists Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke, she became famous at the age of 17 as the sole survivor of the 1971 LANSA Flight 508 plane crash; after falling 3,000 m (10,000 ft) while strapped to her seat and suffering numerous injuries, she survived 11 days alone in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest until she was rescued by local fishermen after finding their camp.

The maggots in her arm actually cleaned the wound. They might have saved her arm from nasty infections. Great Story Chris.
Yes, just what I was thinking. We had a farm animal with a leg injury, into which flies laid eggs that hatched into maggots. The vet said to just let the maggots continue, terrible as that sounds. He said maggots only consume the dead flesh and actually are cleaning the wound from possible infection. What a system!
I have read a an account of Juliane survival where it was said she had an infestation of boy fly larvae on the injury of her arm. Her autobiography released in 2011 "When I Fell from the Sky: How the Jungle Gave Me My Life Back"
I was thinking the same thing! They very likely saved her life and her arm! However if they were actually botfly larvae then they probably kept the wound clean of infection, but with the tradeoff of them doing more damage to the wound because of the large holes they leave. Definitely not something fun to think about! 😵
Yes , “You need a more structured environment. One in which your indoctrination will be far easier to instill. FAR better than an education in the Real World that a young girl like you has no need for if she’s going to be a good wife and mother in “civilization” “ . Other than math and some biology, maybe sports ,,, I haven’t squeezed much value out of the countless hours , cold,dark,early mornings in winter to make it to class on time ,,, that I received as a typical western public school student.

When I was in High School-mid 1970's,I read a book about her surviving the plane crash and making it out of the jungle, alive. Of course, this story has always stayed with me. She said staying calm and drifting down the river is what saved her from the crocodiles. A terrifying story with an unbelievable outcome. Thank You for sharing, Chris!

That is an incredible true story. I have heard shorter accounts of this story. None of these accounts contained as many details as your telling of this event. Strange you should tell this story today, when only yesterday I was listening to another RUclips storyteller about 4 young children who similarly survived a plane crash along the Amazon, probably Brazil. The young lady in your story had particular experience of the jungle which served her well, but the 4 youngsters of yesterday didn't. You often hear about youngsters being retrieved alive from underneath collapsed buildings days after earthquakes. Seems the young have a particular natural resilience to physical adversity.

I have recently read about a group of native children who were raised in the jungle and survived a plane crash and days alone in the jungle. They knew how to survive and one of them was a young child

What an incredible journey. It is like an ancient epic tale to be told and remembered. Like true myth. Her courage and trust in her father and how he had prepared not knowing what she would have to endure. With respect I offer a view point. Starting with a desire to see her father she is warned this was not the way. Going over the giant mountains(the habitation of the gods) she saw beasts in the clouds and then the disaster/the attack. And falling in disastrous circumstance she then miraculously survives . And she remembers her fathers instruction and begins the journey. After calamity, pain, and loss she seeks and listens for the hope of moving water. Could this be a symbol for Living Water? She is protect past monsters, insects and difficulty and she keeps on trusting what her father told her. She finds as he said larger streams and finally the boat, then helpers, then carried to a village, and finally a hospital and the challenge of recovery. Her journey seems similar to the Great Creator Supreme Spirit who loves us and is seeking us, His people who have gotten lost and hurt. And Jesus the Living Water delivers us home with his suffering to heal our wounds and blood to cover our errors. And the New Life of the resurrection.

At 20:44, I've been to Pucallpa, very deep in the Amazon jungle. Wow. Many crazy things in that area, including river dolphins and shaman.
