- I ride 3 Zero motorcycles and discuss the technology with Alec From English Electric Motorcycle company (englishelectric...).
A huge thank you to Alec at English Electric for the opportunity, I wouldn’t have done it if it was a normal sales talk invite. If you need someone who is very knowledgeable and wouldn’t pull the sales pitch on you, then talk to these guys.
Lots of info, pictures, etc.. on my website, Facebook, Instagram & Twitter:

Wanting an answer to a question? Most probably it is answered in the FAQ here: reel.tv/faq/ or in the Questions vids here: • Questions ?
Logo, intro and channel art by Emanuele Monaco.
The longest video I ever made, but hope the information it provides is worth it. And, don't forget to vote :)
Nice video
Yeah sir! Appreciate your Hardwork. 👍
Nice
It was one cool fun little adventure trip video you post in a while. Loved how he explained all things without the sales pitch. Also loved the dog playing with you. :D Very fun to watch indeed!
I have a clip in one of my last vids of a zero bike just taking off and I'm so impressed with how insane the acceleration is. Thank you so much for this vid +RoyalJordanian I may go and buy one for myself now haha
Imagine the sound of RJ's intro in the future... Maybe wind noises only
No, vintage noises.
Then I don't like the future
TMF did a similar thing as a joke (at least I think it was a joke, lol), he inserted some cheeky tesla coil type noises to his intro to replace his standard intro.
High voltage and current arcing!
He'll probably have a massive spark pop out of his bike lighting up the inside of a tunnel blue and girls will scream.
Thank you very much RJ!!!! I just recently drove the Zero FXS and will buy it Late '18 for my daily commute. You'll know because you've ridden it by yourself, but electric is so convenient. Hard to describe, but it's such a smooth, convenient, satisfying way to ride. I love the fact that, despite of being a real petrolhead, you also support the new ways of transport and show us some insight in these technologies.
I'm also looking for an FXS, did you get yours and if so how has it been for you?
17:55 Riding begins here
Thanks for this
Thanks man
Thanks buddy
Welcome to the wonderful world of electric bikes RJ! I loved the DSR when I borrowed one, sadly I had a bit of an unhappy "incident" (not sure if you saw my videos on that) whilst enjoying the DSR, I think it is a fabulous bike though....just a word of advice, take it easy when you borrow one....no traction control on a bike with monster torque. I can't wait to get back on one.....looking forward to your findings. All the best matey - TMF
Just saw your vid, glad you were ok.
Cheers RJ, appreciated - brilliant brilliant bikes but those wheels do spin up quickly...enjoy but learn from my mistake! All the best and looking forward to seeing what you make of these amazing beasts....
Probably take the fxs at least the tyres won't try and kill you.
Its strange to see RJ in a bike, and don't hear it's exhaust
*It's strange
*its exhaust
pedro nogueira Sorry, i find really boring to use the corrector
I love those Zero bikes! I died a little when he said he used to have "zero" interest in electric motorcycles lol. To bad he didn't have the ZERO SR naked street model. But the DSR is basically the same bike. They are so much fun to ride, pricey but low cost/mile. You should get one :)
People struggle with change. You should really test ride one of these to really understand what they are about. There’s something really nice about so much power with a silent power delivery. Nice vid RJ
Oh my God RJ. I think I just fell in love with the FX S. I must admit I didn't think much about electric till now but that FX S. If only it was chain drive. And if batteries could charge faster :(
Sounds quality is bad on this video, not sure what's happened. Hope it's not just my end that's wonky. Cracking content regardless👍👍
RJ addressed that in the video. Watch it to the end and you will hear him.
@brains But he did not say that. He only said he had problems with the sound for the final part and could not publish it. no indication the parts before were bad.
Yeah I did hear what he said at the end about the wind noise and not being able to publish that part , but the whole video was noisey and that's not normal for RJ. Wasn't trying to be mean or anything, just letting the man know there was perhaps an issue.
Great video, great footage and great effort. I'd surely like to see more of the FXS, seems like the best combination of fun and all round usability.
It pleases me that you like them 8)
I've been building custom electric bicycles for just over a year now. Made 4 custom build bikes over 10kw. They are typically £5000. The most recent one completed about a week ago was a 15kw, 40kg downhill bike. Tops out at 65mph, absolute off-road beast. Wheelies all day long. Appox 70mi range on a full battery. The instantaneous torque is just unreal.
I've been tempted to start custom electric motorcycles.
Thanks for the video, and for having an open mind to EVs!
There's a gap in the market for selling sound fx kits for these bikes, maybe exhaust notes of classic machines and at the flick of a switch the Ride of the Valkyries from the helicopter sequence in apocalypse now.
Maybe a galloping horse sound or panicking crowd sounds - oh god I think I've just seen the future and it's going to be noisy.
The EU is banning switches. Depends if those determined to stop brexit get their way.

Imagine rj bought an electric bike and puting it on the intro 😂😂
Especially important to have an RJ opinion on this subject, he does so much to educate people about how to use exhaust for communication and safety.
I like the noise of the electric bike. I think it's cool. Science fiction.
Roland Tiiroja if only they made the models look better....
Batman's BatPod in the Dark Knight movies is based on the Tesla sound, Google it. And yeah it can sound very very cool when portrayed like that..
When I decelerate mine it sounds crazy
RJ, you've changed the way I look at electric motorcycles, I am interested now!!!! won't buy one straight away but am definitely a potential buyer in the next 5-7 years.......
I vote for the FXS as you seemed more enthusiastic about that 1. Less weight always means more fun, as long as u can live with the range. I’d love an electric enduro so you can ride anywhere without annoying anyone but I do believe in loud pipes save lives on the road, mostly due to this channel!
i like the idea... especially for green
lanes and a bit of offroading...fewer
grumpy peeps complaining about noise. Also interesting to see where electric bicycles and electric motorcycles will meet regarding tech. in the future
Amazing strides this technology is taking! Still not there yet (range is still very poor, charging times are still too long, the weight is still too much, etc), so my next one will still have an ICE, but in 4 or 5 years time I'll be going electric, no doubt. Exciting times!
I was used to loud sound machines of RJ and now this. Bt the bike has a punch... liked it thoroughly.
200 miles on a single charge is a full month of commuting into central London from SW London for me... This seems like a no-brainer as a commuter! They look like they are A LOT of fun! Going to go and try on out this week for sure.
Yes electric is the future. It's only a matter of time and we will see these bikes produce more power & longer range capabilities. I just wish we could have some form of 'engine' note or rather the audio of a snarling exhaust. Nice work AJ.
I’m a 4th year Masters level Mechanical Engineering student designing an electric Formula Student vehicle. I’m also massively into motorbikes and I’d love to one day get into a career with these guys!
Oh, also, he's right about the maintenance thing. My friends call me zero maintenance paul since I never ever do any work on my ebike... because I've never had to. It just keeps going and going. Never done an oil/filter change. Never had a breakdown. It almost feels like cheating lol
couldn't live without the exhaust noise 1984 gpz Harris pipe love it!
The restriction is probably to limit current draw from the battery, reducing stress on the battery and increasing its life. Or since a motor produces torque more or less instantly, its to prevent an accidental wheelie if you accidentally twist the throttle. Although you could just tell how impressed RJ was.
I've tried an electric bike and I didn't like at first, but bought it anyway, since I have money for that. MAN, that's actually awesome, so awesome that now it's my main bike inside the city.
I love the whine the motor gives. It's great.
If you have a riding profile that suits them, I think they make total sense. I'm really pleased you showed some useful stuff, like the overtaking performance. They definitely move.
If people want to see how far E bike technology has jumped look at the TT. The first year they raced E bikes they barely managed 1 lap and average speed was 88mph last year they were managing 3 to 4 laps and a average speeds where 125mph. The same speed that John Mcguiness managed in his first TT win on a 250 two stroke bike. There is still massive jumps to come in battery technology and these will improve range while reducing weight. Look at how much Tesla have advanced in the last 5 years. Standard cars racing fully modified street racers and winning. And then Tesla's first generation electric trucks.
This video is the longest one. So I would better comment first and then watch it.
Well Done RJ, Appreciate your Hardwork. 👍
I just got a Zero DS yesterday. What a bike! Thinking of starting my own RUclips channel called "The Quiet Man". Either that or "Regular Irishman". Hat tip to you RJ!
didn't expect much sound to be coming from them. Boy do they sound futuristic
more people need to be open minded about the future of Electric in a motorbike..i would own one. Very informative video. i like the FXS(second bike). cheers!
Yeah RJ, take the one u feel most confortable.
Honestly, can't wait to see the review.
I went to the exact same place and rode the DSR only a few weeks back! Amazing bikes and really nice guys. If only I went few weeks later may have seen you there!
The only thing that puts me off a electric is the price because for 15k I could get a Ktm super duke 1290 R and probably get change
You also need to compare fuel, if the 1290 costs $10-20k in the US for 10 years of fuel, the electric costs $500-1k.
I would guess the difference would be maybe twice as big in the UK.
coast2coast00 yeah I see what you mean but I do a lot of city riding but do a lot more then 200 miles a day and don't have 2 hour's to stop and charge the bike but I do have 5 minutes to fill up with fuel so it wouldn't be good for me for that reason only apart from that probably get one
coast2coast00 here's one for ya, say you want to go on a trip from idk (UK terms because I don't know where you live) Glasgow to London probably a 5-600 mile driveish how long would you want it to take 6-7 hours or idk 2 days lol
DDon 6 or 7 hour's mate that why I wouldn't use a electric lol
It's also the fact on a longer journey is it faster to take it slow and not have to charge so often. Or go faster to progress more but use all the time you gained to spend it on extra charging? It's quite the conundrum?
It doesn't feel like an RJ video without a booming exhaust sound XD
Definitely a future for motorcycles,
as the tech gets even better, smaller, and more powerful :)
Loved the Sora electric I had a chance to Demo years ago
Finally! Been waiting 2 years for this video! :D
There were a few on display at the Streetbike dealership in Birmingham at the latest charity bike ride there, and someone was on one too I think. They do look nice in person!
Great video RJ! You got me really excited about trying an electric bike. I actually prefer quiet bikes, so this would be perfect for me. I ride defensively, so I'm not worried about not being heard. And then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty about CO2 emissions every time I ride. And nowadays there are plenty of charging stations for electric cars; I wonder if those would work for electric bikes as well.
Serrano Pereira The stations work for zeros but you have to buy a very expensive accessory charging kit that takes up the storage space on the bikes.
in terms of customisation, how about a 100db speaker at the back of the bike belting out the sweet sweet melody of 3-6k revs from the Nuda
Been riding my electric bike for 4 years (electric bicycle) and I mostly use the throttle . Same battery, same motor (wheels, handlebar etc have been replaced since) . No maintenance and costs less than boiling a kettle of water . This is the future and I can't wait . Also I heard Tesla are investing in battery tech for bikes .
This was really weird. I though I had my speakers turned off. Had to check every time your took off on one of those bikes. :) I do believe they are great but you can not transfer to the video so easily. I usually watch you videos so loud that I can feel the sound of bike from my subwoofer. :)
These things need an RJ button for pedestrians & motorists!
The Zero FXS looks so amazing, definitely try that one :D
I think the FSX is more your style... thanks for a great vid 👍
I like that FX. Ideal if you're a Rural rider, especially if it could cope with larger riders (150Kg). but all of the models at a taste of things to come.
I love the heavenly voice review at the end
Great video. That dude is a born salesman. I vote for the FXR. It's a more 'everybody' bike. More experienced riders can use it but so can the noobs. There'll be plenty more vids from you, RJ, on the more potent E-bikes in the future, I hope. It's the future, baby.
so quiet that RJ's mic only picks up wind noise. that's perfect for me lol.
I love my bikes and the noise they make, but these bikes are the future, we need to do this......I’m in.
The only use i see for electric bikes is a funbike for around town.
For long rides you still want a petrol engine so that you can fuel up and keep going.
I'd love to have an electric enduro because people seem to be accepting it way more than a bike that makes noise in the woods,
but the range makes it impossible, i would have to head back home as soon as i reach the woods..
Even with a trailer to take it to the Ardenns (Europe) would be quite useless, i dont want to be stuck with a bike that has 20% power left when i have hills to climb.
I will be excited when there is a competitive enduro bike that doesnt have these issues, then it would be loads of fun to ride!
Also, the damn styling is horrible on these bikes!
Modern motorcycles are ugly anyways in my opinion, with the curvy plastic bits everywhere.
They should make the bikes look simple, like a CR250 or something, make it look sturdy, crashable and just use simple plastics..
Maybe this would be the bike for you?: www.ktm.com/us/e-ride/freeride-e-xc/
It has the looks, but range is still pretty bad.
My son has a little Oset trial bike, and i noticed that the battery life is around 40 minutes on flat surface until it becomes too slow, but when we are in the woods and he climbs some hills, it literally takes 15 minutes to drain the battery and it cant get up a hill anymore.
Reckon thats another issue with electric bikes
Great video as usual from you RJ - what's worrying is the number of trucks on our country roads - all this freight should be put on the railways
Interesting to see if cost & range are the only issues..........great vid!
FXS, The engine is restricted when it becomes to hot. Start to play in slow speed with high power/high regen and it won't have high power for long. Once you reach the thermal limit it will restrict power. So keep that in mind while pla... riding. I have an FX. If possible try the FXS also without the front battery. Just to see what she does with less weight in the front. ;)
Brilliant video and love the look of the bikes! But I'm just in awe at the fact YOU WERE RIDING THROUGH MY HOME TOWN ANDI DIDN'T COME ACROSS YA :'(
I had some fun on a dirt track with some jumps in austria with a ktm freeride E. it is basically the fx but from ktm. I can vouch for the electric bikes being alot of fun
I would vote for FXS because obviously you will go for it.
thank you so very much,.. please keep us up to date on these. cheers,.... 😄👍👍
I will really like to try one of those bikes. I just like bikes in Generals and electric is a new experience!
Ill be looking forward to the extended test on whichever bikes get the vote. Great vid and insight on the Zero.thx.
These bikes are pretty good and yes it's the future 🙂
Phantom Rides nope its not
Friedhelm Winter mostly for the first world countries plans have already been made to phase out gas guzzling vehicles and that includes two wheelers. Do Google. Cheers.
Phantom Rides Is to me all the same I will drive, nevertheless, internal combustion engine
Phantom Rides unfortunately
future is not electric, future is dark.
RJ how is it without using the left hand? I would make "ghost grabs" 😆
I think a "clutch" on the left would be great and clever anyways, they could use it to pause the recuperation like in sport mode. In that way you could use it in situations where you want to "sail" when it is more efficient. Thank you for the video!
The Super Motard would make the most sense, probably, for your kind of commuting around london. Seems to be the one you responded to the most anyway.
Please try the FXS! I think it's the prettier one, but more important, it's the better bike for the majority of travelling that you yourself do. It's quick, nimble and it will give you the best hands-on experience of an electric bike while filtering through traffic in a city like London. Would definitely help other bikers understand what it can do and what you need to look out for while riding an almost silent, but very torque happy bike :)
I bought a new 2015 SR. In three years I put 17,000 miles on it. During that time it spent several periods of time in the shop for several reasons. Eventually the battery failed. Zero said they would replace it but that was after 7 weeks of it being in the shop with no time estimate of when the work would be completed. I sold it back and own a Honda now. Until electric vehicle manufacturers lease the battery like KTM, owning one makes no sense. It’s like buying a gas bike that blows the motor in 5 years, regardless of the maintenance.
For a minute I thought the audio broke but then I realised. Great concept though.
Missed the opportunity to have The Jetsons car sound play over the intro instead of the exhaust sounds.
But still, great stuff!
I like the sound of the electric bikes, they remind me of the Batpod!
What a beautiful collie
Awesome video! I love my Zero :D The FXS would be a lot of fun in the city, but if you're riding more than 80km's you'd be better off with the DSR.
A good thing about electric bikes is that they are most likely lighter than normal bikes because it’s just a battery instead of loads of litres of fuel so it’s really good for around town
900k subs, close
D for the distance, F for the fun :-)
The off-road its insane ! nice
And RJ kindly use a deadcat for that gopro mic because the wind noise was horrible. Or install the mic inside of your helmet. Please 🙏
I think the sound on a bike is very important, it help us get hearded by cars and i think is an optinional protection. Legal bike without db killer maybe
Alec is right about Zero being the Tesla of electric bikes, in terms of steadiness of production electric bikes, and continued evolution. As far as electric sport bikes, Energica is cutting edge. Their Corsa was developed for the new E bike racing series starting up. I never thought about customizing electric bikes. I've test rode the Harley LiveWire (they just cut a deal with Alta Motors, who owns the electric motorcross space), and a Zero. The Zeros are marketed as being a magic carpet ride, and that is spot-on! If I were to customize a Zero, I would paint it with a Persian rug motif. Energica would be your premium electric brand, Alec. There are a few boutique electric motorcycles, but Energica was born of Italian F1 racing hertiage, no comparison. Looking forward to your long-term review Royal Jordanian. Missenden Flyer had one, but he wrecked it, so that's that for now.
Forgot to mention that facebook.com/RIAEvangelist developed a cable for charging Zeros using the Tesla charging stations. And he just developed a hack for changing the Zero display to allow needed info on the main screen.
Great bikes, I am totally hooked :)
I can't forgot the sound of the s1000rs , sorry not for I the zero ^^ nice work RJ !
For me personally the only draw back about electric motorcycles, is the lack of gear shifting. it's part of what i love about riding motorcycles. I'd buy a moped if i just was after "throttle and brake" kind of riding
While I like nice sounding bikes, I find really cool when a vehicle can go really fast and make low noise.
Het RJ. Just want to tell you that
I am getting my first MC. Its a Honda shadow 125cc, so 15hp.
I would love to try the DSR, its a really good looking bike and i see it would make a great commuter, slap panniers with batteries on it and you can even take it touring ;)
Thank you RJ for this very informative video, enjoyed it!
But can you make a VROOOOOM like in your intro? Maybe when they add sound to them and we could select which one we want- F1, Nuda, V6, V8...that would be cool and not hard to make at all!
How are you really gonna scare people when they cut you on the traffic lights with that?
1st thing I did was add a more serious horn to my FXS. I’ve been riding it since January and really the only thing I fault is that some of the stock kit could be a bit nicer for a $11k bike. (No stock LED turn signal, tail and/or headlight. Heated grips from factory would have been nice, too). But, one thing that doesn’t get mentioned often: no ICE also means no vibration, no clutch, yet instant torque at any speed. So relaxing to ride in the city.
Ride right up to them without them hearing you and then honk the horn.
Tobias Strohe I was being sarcastic, I'm really into electric vehicles, as well. But I don't like tesla all that much for many reasons.
Taser seems more in-line with the electric theme.
Thinking Dude ha, yes, Tesla has its issues, but they undeniably have pushed the “traditional” automobile manufacturers to take note. I like the Jaguar iPace. The Zeros are however a lot more affordable to get into electric motoring. And I think they are much more fun than cars :)
FSx as you loved it soooo much :-) I bet the torque in the wet would be interesting!
usually when i watch your videos never put my speakers volume up, because your sound quality is very nice and the bikes are loud.
But in this one i had to turn the volume to the max and i was hearing the wind noise...
electric bikes...
I trust him. He has oily hands.
It's treacle
I was waiting for this day
The DSR looks cool, but you said the FXR is more agile. So lets see how you move through traffic with the FXR. Liked the video RJ, i found it interesting to the last minute.
The bikes are cool but Alfie is the best and that farm looks awesome, reminds me of home.
It's the future WHEN they get faster charging ..build more power stations..other wise dream on....
Nice video RJ, maybe get a mic fitted in your helmet for these vids, no wind noise and easier to hear you.
Buy that DSR... it looks awesome ❤️
Cannot wait!!
My main reasons to not buy one is distance and the fact that it's quiet. I love the different sounds engines make, especially motorcycles. It's almost like a statement. Also a bike that can be heard by other motorists is a safer bike.
Not for me.
