  • This is a review of the 22" Discada by Southwest Disk. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Southwest Disk is Veteran-owned. On our video review of three, single-burner stoves, Jody N. left a comment asking for a comparison of the Southwest Discada and a Skottle. (That comparison video is coming soon.) When we receive the Discada, it's just so wonderful that we felt it should have a video review all its own.

    Your video reviews are very informative and helpful. Last week I ordered the 24" Pecos model and matching cover. I have two large parties to cook for this summer, and I didn't want anyone going home hungry. I'll likely order a smaller 18" Madrid for "normal life" cooking for 1-2 people and traveling. I really appreciate your thorough, straight forward, and honest reviews. Thank you!

      That's awesome @Jeep Guy! No doubt, everyone will have nice full bellies after the parties. I'm really thinking of getting the smaller 18" disc as well, for the same reasons. Thank you so much for your kind words. They are deeply appreciated, and you're most welcome. Happy disc cooking!

    Wonderful review! I really like this discada and I think using something you already have for a burner is absolutely brilliant! Even if you don’t have a burner purchasing one like you have makes for an economical alternative to the popular all in one kits. Thank You!

      Thank you so much, Walter. It's a really nice discada. We have also purchased an 18" version from Southwest Disk. It is a nice, manageable size. I like the CampChef Pro 30 burner bunches. It's nice to have a multifunctional burner that can be used for multiple things.

    I made one out of a old plow disk about 10 years ago. I used horse shoes for the handles and welded a ring on the bottom so that it set level on a fish fryer.
    I've made chili and stew in it, but my favorites is making breakfast burritos and frying crawdads in it.

    I am planning on purchasing this same setup. I think it’s unbeatable. I reviewed your other video of the tembo tusk. More expensive might I add. I purchased the tembo tusk because the company was local to me. I was disappointed from day 1. I really wanted to return it but I did want to support an upcoming company and give back to the community. The problem with the tembo tusk is that the burners are basically one hot spot in the center. A super hot spot. Not ideal for cooking. Burnt food is what it’s been producing. Almost all videos of tembo tusk shows burnt food. Also now with the adjustable feet it adds another problem. The manufacturer did not think about indicating or marking where the notch pins are inside the feet . They would have to be transparent for them to not cause a difficult frustrating time configuring the feet. In most cases it’s easier to pull the feet out and start that way. Because if you don’t then the leg spins around and your just guessing where the set pin is and you find yourself playing fiddle with three legs. SMH. I think the Veterans have crafted a way better design. Shout out to the Veterans. Great welding compared to the tembo tusk.

    Hello, thanks for taking the time to make the video. Super helpful!! I am curious if you have ever felt like the 22 was not enough. Have you felt like you should’ve ordered the 24 inch disc? I don’t think I’ll cook for more than six people at the most but I am a fan of having more than enough than not enough. But I also want it to be transportable for camping trips. Also, do you know if a small 1 pound green canister of propane will fit on your burner? Thank you for reading my questions.

    • @wobblyotteroutdoors
      @wobblyotteroutdoors  3 года назад

      You're welcome @TheAyotteMan. Glad it is helpful. The 22" cooking disc is plenty big. I haven't ever thought about needing a larger one. When using it over a burner the heated area for cooking is mostly the area in the center that the flames are directly under. With a larger cooking disc over the same burner, the only gain would be in area on the edge that cooked food could be moved out onto to keep warm. If used over a larger flame/fire, then the larger disc would definitely provide more actual cooking area. All that said, if you want the 24" disc go for it! The propane hose that came with the Camp Chef Pro 30 is made to be used with fittings like are on the 20lb bottles. Adapters are available that allow the use of of a 1-lb propane bottle with the larger size fittings. Here's a link to one on Amazon (our WOO affiliate link): amzn.to/3qCNuIB

    Fun fact:
    The cookware is a DISCO; the food cooked in it is called discada (literally “cooked via a disk”) and can vary quite a bit, like the English “fry up”.
    In case that’s unclear, here are some similar examples:
    fryer, fried
    wok, stir fried
    smoker, smoked
    grill, grilled (parilla, parillada)
    griddle, griddled (plancha, planchada)
    roaster, roasted (asador, asada)
    Now you know…
    disco, discada

    • @wobblyotteroutdoors
      @wobblyotteroutdoors  2 года назад

      Thanks, Saru. I totally get it. Really. The "interesting" thing is that Southwest Disk uses the word Discada often as a product name. 🤔 i.e."24" Pecos Discada" and "Roswell - the 22" UFO Discada"
      Since we bought the cooking disk from them, I used that terminology. [Added: In the spirit of "getting it right" I will be referring to it as a cooking disc going forward. Southwest Disk does also refer to them as cooking discs, discos, etc., in their descriptions/history.]

      Hello, Max, and thank you. Yes, it fits on the Camp Chef Pro 30 burner without needing a wok ring. It's so cool. Yes, the burner can definitely make the pan hot enough to sear a steak. The pan is thick, so it will take it some time to heat up. I hear ya on liking carbon steel pans. I've only had the pleasure of using them for a few years now, and they are wonderful.

      Cool. Yes. Cut up 3 or 4 boneless skinless chicken thighs. Cut up a broccoli crown, a small squash, and 4 green onions. Precooked about 2 cups of rice. Heat the cooking disc over a medium low flame. Put about 4 tablespoons of oil in the cooking disc and let it heat up. Cook the chicken thighs until done and push them to the edge. Add the broccoli, squash and onion to the cooking disc, plus about 1/2 cup of water. Cook until the desired doneness. Push the chicken back to the center of the cooking disc. Add about 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Add the cooked rice. Turn off the heat and mix everything together.

    What do I need to do to a brand new discada to prepare it for its very first use. Do I need to wash and oil it first? Do I use soap and water to wash it?
    I read the instructions on their website but it is too much information on the care and I just need to know what to do for its first cookout. Thanks

    • @wobblyotteroutdoors
      @wobblyotteroutdoors  9 месяцев назад

      Hello. Oooo, a new discada! So cool. Before the first use, wash it with lightly soapy water and dry it. Wipe a thin layer of oil all over the pan (canola oil is a good one), then wipe the oil off with a dry cloth . While it may not feel like it after wiping off the oil, there will still be a super thin layer of oil in place that will help keep it from rusting. Then when you heat the pan to cook, that super thin layer of oil will be polymerized by the heat - this is the seasoning process. That super thin (non-detectable) layer of oil is needed to season the pan. You can care for the discada just like a cast-iron pan. I hope this is helpful. Happy cooking!
