I think the opening scene accompanying Rhapsody in Blue is one of the most wonderful of any movie. Shot brilliantly of course by The Prince of Darkness himself, Gordon Willis.
I'll never know why Woody really detests this film. He's said many times about how he dislikes it, and tried to get the distributor to not distribute it. Even offering the distributor to pay them not to release it. He even said he would make his next picture for free, if they wouldn't release "Manhattan." But they went against Woody's wishes, released it, and it became a worldwide hit. One of the all-time favorite movies of Woody's fans. The beautiful black-and-white photography by Gordon Willis, the music by Gershwin. How could you not love it? I've only heard him say how much he dislikes the picture. Has anyone ever heard him giving any REASONS for his disliking of the film? Would be interested if anybody knows. Thank you
Over the years A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY has become one of my absolute favourite Allen pictures. It's deceptively simple yet sophisticated and complex, and the perfect movie for a rainy afternoon.
An excellent interview. I stumbled upon these amazing interviews when all those big stars were so young. It's interesting to know about their opinions on their craft and their beginnings.
His speech pattern is similar to how you would speak to a small child or grandmother who might be easily frightened. Is very knowledgeable and a very good interview. But I remember when I first started watching him years ago it took a while to get used to because he is the first man that appeared neutered and had to zero aggression or manly mannerisms. I have since grown up and realized his traits don't matter off a football field.
As problematic as Allen is, this is such a fantastic interview. Linehan was truly a master of this long-form discussion. Even his short pieces contained integrity. You can tell the subjects, enjoyed Brian's inquisitive questions/insights. My fav interviews are with the alpha male actors---the way he casually disarms them, is always enjoyable
I love that he says, "If you're very bright, you can make a case for anything." Dorothy Sayers has a great line in one of her books: "There's nothing you can't prove if your outlook is only sufficiently limited."
Haaa good . Woody is one of those quotable type of conversationalist. What a gift to see a lasting piece of your verbal record a part of public consciousness. that is memorable to appear in books magazines and even RUclips. I have always loved truisms homilies and show business quotes. The book publisher Bennet Serf made a lifes work of collecting of celebrity quotes that ran into thousands.
Brian Richard Linehan (September 3, 1944 - June 4, 2004) was a Canadian television host from Hamilton, Ontario, best known for his celebrity interviews on the longrunning talk show City Lights.
Did you, while sitting in a corner of Studio 54, reading Dostoevsky's The Idiot, recall the fishing trip with your uncle Hershel in upstate New York that lead to a lifelong love of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of The Bumblebee inspire you to write the scene with the Lobsters in Annie Hall?
Yeah, Linehan is a good interviewer, but sometimes his questions were needlessly complex, like he was trying to impress the subject. I'm all for an interesting question, and I abhor the simpletons who ask "What's your favourite colour?", but I'm good with something in the middle.
this guy is my guilty pleasure. always makes me laugh and every thing about him is interesting. his marriage makes me sad even though i know its just fine.
there's nothing guilty about liking him my friend. Don't let fool and mouth breathers get in your way, you have a nice taste for movies and that's very rare these days.
26:20 Atari the new G-d. Oh man if they only knew what was coming. Watched this unfold that year. I was 12 yrs old. The thing that competed with comic books for a boy's attention. But this wasn't the same. Hours and hours of idle wasted time in front of the idiot box. Still is such a bad idea. Bringing what were called arcades into your home.
wow, Woody has a very concise and direct theory on filmmaking and visual media. He should/would/ is/be a master professor of the Art and is underutilized as an educator due to his "peculiar" predilections when it comes to sexuality. Its a shame and really should be corrected. yes he's weird, yes, you can judge him, but lets not overlook, or forget what he did, and what he knows.
This is the interviewer who was spoofed by Martin Short on SCTV interviewing Bob Hope, played by Dave Thomas, who calls him on his portentous style: "When you stop talking, it's like walking to the edge of a cliff." ruclips.net/video/BJDK71B6xI8/видео.html
Have you reflected on the influence of Jean Renoir's The Grand Illusion and his pacifist stance on the socio-political trend in America's increasing opposition to the Vietnam War, or are you more interested in the toning benefits of aerobics on women's bottoms, but still retain an admiration for the defense of Keynesian economic theory in Laverne and Shirley?
Pesky Echo he didnt adopt her. u r misinformed. and he got his punisbment for seducing his girlfriend's daughter. a marriage founded on loyalty borne of isolation and poor judgement.
Interesting interview. I always have mixed feelings about seeing Allen mature, which is an absurd thing to apply to most people. But he could be uniquely funny in impromptu situations, including interviews. Then his films referenced cinema auteurs, which demanded more from the interviewer... things almost too mired in analysis for much spontaneity, let alone a joke. Also, the interviewer, while excellent, was very shiny.

Zero foundation to the accusation, and no condemnation of Mia Farrow whose children have claimed she has abused them and who has defended Polanski the proven molester. One of her children committed suicide, and certainly Dylan's entire self has been destroyed.

Canadian, of course!
A well-prepared, thoughtful and intelligent interviewer talking with a thoughtful and intelligent guest. A pleasure to view.

Brilliant brilliant interview.
Such a pleasure to see a genius questioned so interestingly by a superb, knowledgeable interviewer
I still say Manhattan is a masterpiece and his finest film!
I don't why that movie was so highly rated and I don't disagree. It was well paced and written and l watched several times and loved it.

This was Woodys red hot period. Everything he did, until the mid 90’s, was good.
Definitely. I used to wait in heightened anticipation, of each new film he made, esp in that period.
Wayne J Me too.
My feelings precisely. The fifteen years from 1975 to 1990 seemed to be particularly florid.
When did he fall off for you? I liked almost everything up until Celebrity.
