  • Why is the Gurkha undefeated in Tug of War?
    The Mahindra Thar Vs Force Gurkha debate rages on once again, but this time in Tripaccino style. With details never before seen anywhere on the internet, we analyse the tech and the mech behind these jeeps and lay out the facts behind their unique strengths and weak points.
    As a tripaccino exclusive, for the first time, we bring up engine performance curves of the 2.6 FM CR and mHawk130 and break open the gearboxes of G28 of Force and 6R320M of Mahindra and discuss their gearing and drive train.
    The Thar is a matured product in its lifecycle while the Gurkha promises great potential. Which is your pick?
    We have a bonus special segment where we reveal the secret behind cars’ tug of war competitions and their purpose, rather the lack of it.
    Let me know in the comments below which of the two is your pick and why?

    I think one should always start the comments by thanking you for the time, effort and most importantly patience that goes into these videos. In a jingoistic, loud social media driven world where people just want a winner and zero nuance, these videos are a god send to old schoolers like me. As i said before if Physics was taught like this and with examples of jeeps, I would have never quit Sciences after Class 10th. Thank you for laying it out so beautifully and with logic. Additionally any news on the updated Gurkha to be released after 1st April 2023 due to the updated BS VI norms ?

      Thanks for the kind words. It does take a lot of time and research to build these videos with new tech info. the viewership is niche and consists of old schoolers and people who appreciate this type of content, but that’s the channels aim too: instead of a viral jingo tug of war, Tripaccino rather wants to present auto literacy to those who accept it. Thanks 🙏 for noticing and commenting on that perspective.
      The new Gurkha will take time. Expect May Jun for 3D and Festival for 5D.

    Excellent content. I am sure you must be either a mechanical or automobile engineer equipped with amazing graphical and presentation skills. The kind of research and effort gone into this content is truly commendable. As I mentioned in one of my comments earlier, I accidentally happened to see one of your videos and ended up watching all of the videos in this channel. Watching your videos again and again multiple times has become an addiction to me and this is one of the healthiest addictions to have. Force motors should honor you for your love and passion towards their product and I strongly feel they must consult you for product management and enhancements to Gurkha. This is the 7th time, I watched this video before going to sleep and I also aspire to own a Gurkha someday for its sheer road presence and off-roading capabilities. Having seen your videos, luxurious fancy cars with very high speed limits, tech-savvy interiors and exteriors no longer excite me. Unfortunately I am yet to learn driving as I am scared of driving in Bangalore traffic even though I am in my late 30s. Once again thanks a ton for such awesome content.     Brilliant video!!! My 2 cents;
    1. You have not considered the weight difference between the two anywhere. The 400kgs extra kerb weight on the Gurkha can never be offset by making any mod.
    2. Comparing what a Gurkha can become with what Thar is as it comes from the manufacturer is a bit skewed perspective in my opinion. Slightly modified Thar will throw the Gurkha out of comparison at once.
    3. Except for the cabin space I dont see Gurkha scoring any points over the Thar- blank slate to blank slate or from slightly modded to fullfledged, nowhere close.
    4. Gurkha has the presence no other rig has in India right now. That is it. All of us buy the Gurkha just for that and ofcos as I said for the cabin space. We are Gurkha fan boys pretty safe to say 😂

    Lovely video as always. But I don’t understand the need for xtreme configuration when we already have the THAR. Low performing big bore diesels are fun in their own way. Who always wants to win races and off-road events.❤ It’s fun being outside the rat race.
    I didn’t know older 2.6 Gurkhas had bigger turbos😮, that’s new to me. And smaller turbos are punchy enough especially right at bottom end where I need them the most uphill while overtaking. Just today evening I beat a loaded truck in second gear😁🍻🍻🍻.😅

      Thanks doc. 🤠Your breed of the technically curious are my main target audience. Glad you liked it. ! 🫡
      ‘Low performing big bore diesels are fun in their own way’ .In their ‘own’ way. Yes.
      Lend me your ears for a detailed tech breakdown . I know you’ll enjoy it 🤓.
      First let us clear out the air ⚙️tripaccino’s 2.2 recommendation is not coming from a jingoistic paper tiger camp which simply mongers more digits to claim pointless supremacy against rivals. (Baap Kaun hai brigade) I am totally with you on that one doc. , and it’s annoying how people who have never driven either - are quick to diss the Gurkha just declaring it’s ‘underpowered’. But our contentment with the 2.6 is short lived. Read on: 😃
      As we discuss in the video, the Force staple FM2.6CR is ageing and long in tooth, but it works. Low end grunters like 616 are enjoyable in certain applications when one’s not in a hurry. Best for people movers and commercial haulers. The OM616 is sufficient for ‘most’ things, ambling up hill roads in a relaxed and comfortable manner, like you use it for, is one of them.
      But there are a host of other ‘normal’ applications where the present mech suite finds itself wanting.
      I have driven the Xtreme on road and off-road and there’s a reason I miss its suite. ( in terms of brutal power burst I miss the BS3 even more but that’s going too far back . That bs3 could burst out of a standstill and take inclines like nothing else can) The 2.2 mHawk of the Thar and the FM2.2CR (OM 611) of the Gurkha are not the same in behaviour. At this point I’m tempted to make another video building up the engine curves of the 611 compared to present duet. The lower end of the 611 is as torquey as the 616. It additionally climbs to 1600 revs to give a healthy mid range and a robust top (for diesel standards). It holds its torque flats wider and is smooth surge of power in mid range where most normal driving happens on trails and flats and sands.
      If we follow the drive train animation in the video , today’s Gurkha is limited in torque absorption right out of the engine at the Gearbox level itself. The G28 has a cut off on the torque it can handle. The G32 expands this band significantly.
      The suite of the Xtreme put out a mouth watering FDR thanks to better ratios at each stage including lower gears in transfer case and even diff on axles, which made the truck so versatile over a wide range of applications on and Offroad. Forget the competitions and off-road events ( which btw should be one of the strong use cases for a purpose built offroader, but niche) Even in normal trails and forests I have tried to keep up with the Xtreme and there are many places , where momentum is key to cross certain obstacles , the Xtreme will chug through, while the Bs6 has to go technical . Normal hill driving is ok, but if you’re taking steep slippery inclines on a fully loaded camping 🏕️rig, you will have to carry speeds at higher gears. We are no more in the comfort zone of 1st+4x4Low in these scenarios and I have missed the 611 and it’s drivetrain sorely here.
      The larger turbo reduces power gap between gear changes and makes dollops of torque available just when you need it.
      The small turbo will punch lower but at these higher revs is simply choking the train.
      The cushion that healthier FDR offers is also good for upsized tires which once you try in the Bs6 you will realise that torque at wheels gets shaved off and if you go a bit optimistically high on tire dia, suddenly you’re not smiling up those slopes anymore.
      So the 2.6 is good enough for many, but if you want to build out the best of version of itself then you need what the Xtreme had up its sleeve. And no - Thar cannot do that.😺
      Hope I engaged you 😊

I was supposed to purchase Thar but after seeing Gurkha it was like LOVE at FIRST SIGHT. Later I stopped thinking about any cars on road apart from Gurkha infact we see rarely in Bangalore. Still doing lot of research don't know when I'm gonna invest huge amount it. I own ROYAL Enfield Interceptor 650. Seriously I know the value of engine and engineering of any machine. I don't wanna ride any other bikes after using it and many said it's not worth investing 3L+ on bike but I love this machine. Similar way goes with GURKHA. Less mechanical work rugged and tough look makes it more attractive which I love it and more over I know that I'm not riding my car or Jeep on race track so i limit and maintain my speed. Thank you once again and waiting to hold the steering of it.

      @@tripaccino something struck me and I can't wrap my mind around it. Please, accept my apologies in advance, because this would likely sound dumb...
      The Gurkha is ~390 kgs heavier (figures from Autocar India) than the Thar and that leads to the advantage in a hypothetical tug of war scenario as you explain. But how does the torque:weight not influence the outcome, provided all other factors remain same? I mean both cars need to first be able to move itself from standstill before overcoming the opposing force, and the Gurkha is at a disadvantage there (paradoxically because of it's greater weight), no? Not sure if I'm making any sense...

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад +2

      @@midlife-middling Thanks for the question. I expected this clarification and hoped to clear it in comments because it would clutter if I had explained in video and make it too boring.
      Outline: None of the factor I mentioned , can work independently so for ease of understanding I had simply de linked them in order of priority. And please do note the disclaimer I have deliberately put in :- The engine power torque and how it is put down on ground is important.
      Case 1: If the weight difference is large.
      1. Take the heavy rock example. Why does the rock have to move itself? With a small engine if it even manages to move itself a bit, the Thar is going to find it further more difficult as opposite force is now weight, friction and small engine thrust of the rock.
      400 kgs is kerb weight difference. It is 20% of the vehicle weight! not small difference.
      Also it Doesn't include accessories and mods which will weigh up the vehicle heavily. Let's assume next case and simplify.
      2. If the weight difference is comparable, then the traction on wheels will play a part and weight distribution will come into play. Gurkha will be rear heavy, and also aid its traction.
      3.If you're looking for physics - then opposing force is friction * Opponent weight. The inertial force is Self Mass x acceleration.This acceleration would depend on the engine definitely. But if your self mass is less then your product is less and hence force is less. So you’re making lesser force to propel against opponent in that sense.
      For ease of understanding we are splitting these two physics seperately for ease of understanding - in nature all are happenign parralllely.!
      Hope i have not confused you more. Simply one line:
      If two gurkha's one fitted with mHawk and one fitted with FM2.6CR, then engine and power delivery would come into play. And the mHawk would win! Until then, weight on the driven wheels rules :D

    As usual excellent details and very very insightful thoughts on both the Thar and Gurkha without any bias. I am a Thar fan but bought Gurkha instead knowing the after sales and aftermarket limitations. But for me Gurkha ticks the box and I'm into DIY and like to purpose build the vehicle for my use case in which Gurkha has lots of potential. Thanks for getting into very deep mechanical details of both vehicles in comparison.👌👌👌👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥 Vera level explanations sago......keep going

    Thank you for your time! Really!
    Now with new Gurkha, all the calculations would change, right? As i understand, new Gurkha's tuned engine is to produce 138 BHP, so would it be like Thar (faster), on higher gears? Also how would the R18 would make a difference (5 of them) - heavier vehicle - on overall performance? Also the ground clearance is increased, will that positively affect overall dynamics, I know it solves the most talked about big issue of hitting bigger rocks with previous generation Gurkha!
    Eagerly awaiting your response!

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Месяц назад

      Yes, correct. Ratings would change
      Because of 1. New engine tune
      2.New gear box (Xtreme gearbox as I have suggested in this video has been accepted by Force for the new Gurkha)
      So it will give good low end grunt and good cruise in high gears. The turbo still is the weak link imho and juices out as much as it can but the weight needs to be respected still. Bigger tires will also change gearing ratio and torque at wheel 🛞 as explained in the video. Need to just replace the values from the new owners manual

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад +2

      I wish they could too.
      But the market dictates makers. The actual demand for a purely offroad based setup like the Xtreme (Solid Front Axles and factory body lift etc) is very miniscule for them to take the effort to homologate it for BS6. The 'less extreme' explorer with good offroad kit which would satisfy wider audience was instead made into BS6. The engine in Explorer 2.6 was also staple across the board including the vans so one time effort. The 2.2 was unique to the Xtreme and the Force One before it.

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад +2

      The present configuration has limitations of remap. The components can only absorb so much torque as per rating,
      1. Turbo is tiny presently - very small compared to older Gurkha - so starved of kick .
      2. G28 has torque limitation. With power up torque will also boost which G28 cannot absorb
      3. The ECU of this gurkha cannot be read right now. Presently no protocols exist for proper remap of this version ECU. (Delphi)So once those are l released it would be better to attempt proper re maps. The present Diesel Tronic option is only a single channel fuel regulator and Wolf has benched the ECU. Personally wouldn’t go for either . Will wait for protocols to be available for proper remap.

    What about displacement? Those pull power on the Gurkha is reall. I have seen this engine not sweating at all even in full load, that to 20 years ago in trax avtar. Though this engine never crossed 80kmph, that truck used to have no slow down or behave slower on hill climbs. Either Force is lowering the numbers on paper, cause the 2600 cc displacement for sure can pull a lot than thar

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад +1

      Displacement is the volume of engine.
      Pull power is torque. We have shown how gurkha hits peak torque earlier.
      We have explained advantage of both in gurkha combined with tractor like gear ratios which all manifest as the great low end puller it is.
      Your observations are correct as we have noted in this narration -
      ‘the gurkha will slowly climb to 100 and stay there all day like a freight train thanks to its large displacement 2.6’

    Being a fan of your videos i do have some questions regarding the build quality and reliability of Gurkha cause I have seen a youtubers video of him complaining about the bad quality rubber plastics used in this car is it true? And should one even consider a Gurkha? And for the newbies Gurkha has the worst mileage

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад +2

      Thanks for your viewership.
      Please take RUclipsrs reviews and opinion of their vehicle with a pinch of salt. It’s very subjective and anecdotal. Not correct to generalise the whole product line based on one ☝️ review.
      And be advised that ‘views’ and ‘subs’ skyrocket for any negative connotation or bash video whereas truths fetch you fewer eyeballs. So approach motivation of tubers (including myself ) from that perspective.
      listen to my narration clearly in this video and I do repeatedly state that there are definite QC issues and the owner cannot expect fill it shut it forget it experience. It demands a lot of involvement. There are teething issues and components randomly busting which the company is fixing and rectifying in subsequent batches but it’s not a matured evolved product as I brought out. Get ready to get your hands dirty . Service Center sin your city if it’s good it’s great , if it’s not it’s a miss. There is no consistency in quality of work and knowledge in service Center a across country, all of them are largely positive attitude and want to help though.
      Plastic quality is bad (compared to what? You may want to ask him )
      Fact is that frankly The interior trim and plastics are at par with Trax because it’s same dash and parts - it’s commercial , industrial and nothing fancy. It’s easy to live with and wipe and fix. It will last. It’s not the soft touch dashboards that people are looking for because this is not that kind of a car. These are all superficial. There are better cars who would excel in this department. It’s got a lot of jugaad fixes and rough edges which do bother .
      But if you want a robust platform to build on. This Chassis is CNC and super stiff. Three part CNC - front axle , transfer case and rear axle bearing part chassis. Bullet proof welded with overlap . Probably strongest among Passenger cars I’ve seen. The insulation is top notch .The build quality of the chassis is extremely good and a blank canvas for us to build on.
      Mileage - 2.5 ton 2.6 litre diesel running a low end torquey 5 speed with non existent top end. I would be surprised if it returned good mileage.
      Should you ? - You should consider a gurkha only if you know what you’re getting into and have the Will to work with its few shortcomings . If you can do that you can build out a product slowly over the years that can outgun much more expensive cars: it’s a blank canvas . Can you paint?

      Don’t get me started on phase 2 Gurkhas 😹my advise would be to wait for teething issues with the new inclusions iron out before picking one hot out of the even.

    Hi!!! I have a question for you. There is a product in the market called Rogerab Suspension Buffer. The company claims that it makes the ride quality more cushy and lessens the body roll. I own a 2021 Mahindra Thar and have been considering to get it installed. Can you please make a video explaining the pros and cons of the same and whether the product is viable or not? Also will it by any means hamper the suspension and it's overall performance in the long run as most of my driving is either on long stretches of the highway, sometimes on the hills or a fair bit of off-road here and there.
    Thanks ✌️

    • @tripaccino
      @tripaccino  Год назад

      Ah! Rogerab. Im aware of these and have run them in their early days on a sedan. These are also band aid patch work temporary solution. They add a polyurethane or foam buffer and increase ride height by extending spring length.
      I would suggest please watch my strut top hat spacer review video to understand pros and cons of such temporary mods to suspension. This plays with the coil just like top hats play with struts. I have spoken about spring buffeers as well in that IIRC.
      If you want a suspension upgrade I would suggest a full swap with Dr Nano or some kit like that which will be the full term soulution.

      its a combination of the above. My family were Force Motors (then Tempo) dealers for over 20+ years. and the company had very good technically sound products like the Tempo Trax, Traveler, Matador. But jus didnt support dealers in marketing them, no one knew who the manufacturer was. The only time they tried marketing was when they rebranded as Force and launched the Force One which as an old SUV they rebadged for india. If memory serves me right they used Amitabh for that campaign but it bombed due to low brand awareness, mediocre product and no follow up campaigns. Even now if you see their digital platforms they use tacky stock photos and mock up the vehicles on them or use only content shot by users. Which is of poor quality versus the slick ads a Mahindra makes.
