A lot of these reasons are why I got a crested gecko over a leapard and even a bearded dragon. I had to think a lot about what can accommodate my wife as well. I know with live food it can make the enclosure a little smelly and I can tolerate it but I know my wife wouldn’t. A shorter base but taller tank would take less room up so my wife appreciated that as well. And then the crested gecko is in our room and I can just use a low wattage dark light for the crestie at night
I own them both :D Leopard Geckos can be left alone for a week that's a plus for me. Crested geckos are a little bit more apartment friendly when you're in your twenties and live in a shared apartment in a city like me, it won't take up as much space. Also, all of my room mates were a little skeptical about feeding live insects at first when I was gone, the powder diet is easier to manage. But I could always find a volunteer haha. Also I like the leopard gecko's day night cycle better. You can catch them (in summer time) early in the morning (5 am) awake in their enclosure. At least one of my 2 geckos. So i could actually get up with my pet

Try keeping a Leo with the right heat, right supplements, and kept on paper towels. Then dealing with impaction for no apparent reason. The warm belly baths, and belly massages are easy for me, because Bubba is a good boy, but he did squeak and chirp at me one bath. I couldn't imagine others Leo's who are less fortunate to have such a tolerant boy.

As someone with both at the moment my Peanut boy is my absolute love. Completely agree. I love both, and have had both, but currently only have a leopard gecko because my room gets pretty hot (and I live in a hurricane-prone zone that might lose electricity in summer for extended periods of time) and I don't want to roast the crestie.
I chose leopard gecko. my reasoning: morphs colors are much more clean and bright, beautiful eyes (plus eyelids = less weird), not jumpy, dont loose tail easily. I knew i wanted some kind of bright green or orange lizard, unfortunately both of them cant be green, but leopards have the most awesome electric and blood morphs. Soooo last week i got one :) Although i love light coloured lily whites, and literally any green reptile :) Cons for both: source of food: you keep leopard you keep crickets or roaches, you keep cresties you keep buying special diet. Pros: You can be more self sufficient with leopards.
I got my Bearded Dragon from a breaded and I love him so much. He turned 2 in the middle of September. I named him Bono Edge. He is so chill like Bono from U2 also. So far I haven’t seen him black beard. My next is going to be a Leopard Gecko. I still haven’t been to a reptile show yet. I have two tanks still because I upgraded from a 20 long to a 29 tall. Now I have a ZooMed front opening medium and he loves it. He still wants to climb so I need to upgrade to a tall. Bono is a high yellow citrus.
Mr. Adam, I had the same dilemma when I was trying to decide leopard v crested when I was getting my first gecko. I went with crested because I didn't like the chubby tail of the leopard. I liked the long thing tail of the crested. Also, I love how the crested can lick their own eyes. I found it fascinating and absolutely adorable to watch. I also wanted something more arboreal. There ya go. Crested wins. Of course, they are both adorable with their goofy smiles and 1/10 of 1 brain cell. There is no wrong answer. :) Thanks for the video!
A TIE ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I have both, but I could not decide either. Although I keep 3 Leopard Geckos, 2 Crested Geckos, and 1 Gargoyle gecko. The Crested Geckos do not like being held but allowing me to hold them while spraying down their enclosure (Spraying down the enclosure makes their feet slip and they accept my holding with an open hand as long as I place them on their ledge when I finish the spraying). The Gargoyle and Lepard Geckos accept me holding them, but only 1 leopard Gecko seems to enjoy it, the others accept it under their terms. So in the end I am doing 1 worse, I give a 3-way tile to Gargolyl, Crested, and Leopard Geckos.
I've tended to prefer Gargoyles over Crested because they're almost identical in care while the Gargoyle can regrow their tail while Crested seem to be rare to keep them...
I was at an expo today for some more tarantulas, aaaand found a tokay gecko that absolutely made me want it. I'm not set up for geckos or reptiles in general but that little dinosaur had me thinking really hard about starting right then and there. The crested geckos drew me in but the tokay captured my heart
If you are interested in doing more comparison videos, I'd like to see a head to head (to head) between Leche and chewie geckoes.. Maybe add false chameleons as well as they are, at least superficially, similar
“There are Giant leopard geckos.” “Leopard geckos won’t climb walls or go that far off the ground” Me looking behind at my Giant leopard gecko spiderman-clinging to the top of her exo terra background as she climbs. “You hear that Bandit?”
I started watching you a year ago and you just helped me so much. My four idols are YOU and Snake Discovery and Clint’s Reptiles and Steve Irwin. Now after a year of watching you i have my first reptile.
I have both. They’re so unique in their own ways. I have a lot more fun watching my leopard gecko chase down his roaches but whenever my cresties let me handle them without freaking out they’re so chill. I will say I think I have more fun setting up crested gecko enclosures than leopard geckos.
I like them both, I have a friend who has a couple of crested geckos. They are adorable but I won't hold them because one I'm afraid it will jump on my face or it might be dropped and I don't want to get hurt so I let her hold it and I admire it from a distance
I bought a Chevron Dalmatian Crested Gecko for my first one! He hasn't come yet because- Minnesota winter. I like the way they look better and I liked that they aren't so dependent on insects. Gaining confidence so I can eventually get a Gargoyle gecko bc I'm obsessed with them lol
I am thinking about getting a crested gecko for a spare bioactive Exo Terra tank that I have. I just like setting up tropical enclosures. It would be fun to have one as a pet though.
I've got one of each. Leopard gecko was a freebie, 6 yo albino female. Crestie was a 50% off clearance fella that had spent 4 months in an 80 degree terrestrial enclosure at the pet shop and was described as "not really handleable". Both are super friendly, easy to care for, adorable, and do great with handling. I couldn't pick a favorite. I love them both! After seeing your videos on cave geckos, and such great experience with my geckos, I just had to have one. So last June I brought one home. Bastard still bites me every time I touch him. Leopard and Crestie tie for the best geckos!
Living in central Texas, I actually ran into times this summer and early winter where , if I did nothing to the interior, it would get into the high 20s % RH. Since this is not a year-round thing I took to placing damp towels across parts of the screen top. RH would pretty quickly get to 35-40 RH and my Leo would finally leave his humid hide. And then also misted the interior a time or two per day.
I thought this was a really balanced video that perfectly covered all the main things that someone who's deciding between these two would be considering. I personally went with a Leo several months ago because I live in a drier climate and the whole not having eyeballs thing creeps me out a little. Lol. But I hope to get a crestie when I'm ready.
I'm very partial to crested geckos! I have five of them, and I've had two Leo's as well, love both. I agree that they are similar but also veryyy different! I love building crestie enclosures you have to be creative! I also have been bitten by both, and I found the leos bite was worse, not that it was bad at all, but was worse for sure! But it's from mistaking my fingers for food xD
For the temperature humidity part, I partly agree with you, but only because you live In a cold place, just like you said, adding humidity is easier than removing it, and that's the same with temperature, a person like you who lives in a cold environment might be luckier with cresties, but a person like me( I live in Italy) in the summer it gets really hot, and it's a pain to cool the enclosures down
My first gecko was a crested and I absolutely loved him. Now i have two leopard geckos. Im not sure i could pick a favorite because i find myself missing having a crested now too. :,) They are both so freaking cute and some aspects about each are “easier” than the other but overall i agree with the tie. 😊 you pretty much nailed it.
I'd have to give my vote to crested geckos. They're so easy to care for and fun to watch. I personally love when they jump and climb as it just makes me laugh so hard. (Even when I have to get them off the ceiling) awesome video! 👌
It's funny because I also live in southern Ontario and I find it hard to keep my African Fat-Tailed Gecko's humidity high enough without getting too high. I think it's because of the type of heating I use, which is a deep heat projector. It took awhile to get my crested gecko's humidity and temp right too, but now he's happy as a peach! Edit: It took about a year before my crestie was consistently comfortable being active around me and being handled. I've only had my fat-tailed gecko for 5 months and she spends a week or so at a time hiding in her moist hide. I'm constantly trying to remind myself that it takes awhile for reptiles to warm up to people lol
I recommend switching to a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat, they’re more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).
I know this is an older video, but I’m a new subscriber and just now seeing it. Just checked out your website and wondering if or when you’ll have any cresties available for sale?? Love your vids, bro!
It feels illegal to be this early- but this is so interesting. The differences between the two goes much farther beyond arboreal and not. I do think (personally) setups for cresties are more difficult to set up, just because of the fact that they need such a thick “jungle”.
Just wanted to add in here- for cresties humidity it is important to let the humidity drop to about 40-50% at times then have a spike at about 60-80% - You want about 12 hours with high humidity and 12 hours with lower humidity every day. If you keep it constantly at 60-80% the cresties will get a RI. Babies are way more sensitive to this than adults are in my experience.
One is arboreal the other terrestrial… my leopard gecko didnt get the memo it thinks it’s both. Ever since I put in a 3D rock background it’s been climbing up almost every night. Usually this at this time I handle it and let it climb my hands till it tires out, once I put it back in the tank it just chills in the basking spot lol.
They are both just so cute and so docile I have 4 Leopard geckos and 4 crested geckos and they are all just totally amazing along with all my other animals.
I feel like cresties are more popular. At a local reptile show I volunteer with we have a vendor that is a gecko rescue. She sold 4 cresties and NO leopard geckos. She says she's over-run with leopard geckos. I had a leopard gecko named Nessie. She was my very first pet reptile. After 9 years though she really wasn't getting the attention I knew she deserved because I've become more involved with reptiles and found I loved snakes more. So now Nessie lives with a friend of mine who I know will love her for the rest of her days. Cresties are pretty cool. New Caledonian geckos in general are just awesome.
I have both a leopard gecko and crested gecko. Both are very easy, even when you have a large collection. No one is easier than the other. No one is a better pet than the other. It just comes down to personal preference. Do you want a terrestrial gecko that likes it more dry or an arboreal gecko that likes it humid and cooler? Get what you. If you want a blue tongue or a beardy as your first reptile, do your research and go for it. Blue tongues and beardys are very similar but different as well. Like ball pythons and corn snakes.
Cresties are my favourites personally, i really wanted to have one, but since i never had reptiles and im still 18, i dont have the conditions to keep one properly. So i'll have to gather some money someway and get everything ready if i want one. Here in Portugal they're kinda hard to find, so the only thing i saw at the moment were some going at 135, wich is not that cheap for me since i cant have a job for now due to some uni circumstances.
At 22 Tinley, I got two crested and one chachoua . I like the geockos from New Caledonia. I had never had one before. They are sweet. One got out and was trimitized, but I'm working with him. I named my crestes lime and Coconut, I will get another female and name her tequila, the chewie is named squishy. She is sooooo cute, she's a baby.
I enjoy crested geckos much more than leopard geckos, mostly because they can be fed the powdered diet more often than needing live insects all the time. And thanks for mentioning my home state Adam! I’m from Phoenix, Arizona and I have one crested gecko named Spyro. Right now he’s at my parents house because I have to get an emotional support animal letter from my psychiatrist that allows me to take him to my apartment because my apartment sadly has a no pets policy.
My crestie seems to be missing something upstairs. She quit eating in a 18x18x24. I moved her to an 18x18x18 and she's done so much better and is back eating. I was saving that enclosure. But now I'll look for something to live in the 24 tall.
I plan to have both I got a leopard gecko not to long ago little baby named him sir Archibald pinwall and I love watching him eat and hunt down cricket’s it’s been awesome
personally leos are my fav but due to the mega high humidity in my room [ due to all my aquariums] they are not an option and i can only own terrestrial reptiles or amphibians. might consider african fat tailed geckos
I've heard a lot of mixed things on cohabing cresties. You should do a little break down on the how to and maybe bring in another big creator who focuses on cresties!
They’re solitary animals and don’t benefit from it. They’re very likely to compete for resources, which could escalate to fighting. It can be done successfully in a very large enclosure, but most people do it in an enclosure that’s too small to ethically cohab, unfortunately.
11:14 this makes me laugh because I got bitten by one of the crested geckos at college (I’m not sure what I did wrong, but he’s known for being a bit grumpy. He had to come out because we were cleaning his enclosure) and I was more offended than anything. I called my parents (because I like updating them how my day’s going) they were so worried, it was very funny
I own a leopard gecko and a crested gecko. They're both adorable and I find they're pretty equal in terms of care difficulty. I love how interactive my leopard gecko is, as she will come investigate whatever I'm doing if I'm near the terrarium, and she also "asks" to be let out daily by waiting at the door of her tank and climbing into my hands herself once the door is opened. That being said, my leo is 5 years old whereas my crestie is just a baby so the interaction level or handability may change :) Overall, I do love both species. I think the deal breaker between them really comes down to the space required for the terrarium and your tolerance for bugs. When I was planning to get another reptile, I ultimately chose a crested gecko because they don't need the horizontal space.
I watched more to see if it swayed me more or less to wanting to add a crested gecko to my collection. Do think once I've that little extra time I will be doing so. I absolutely love my leopard gecko though. Only one of my reptiles that has 'bit' me, but that was when she first came home, so my own fault as she was just defending herself against this strange being she didn't really know. Completely different now. Bar the scratches I got on my forehead a few weeks back when my head seemed to disappear as she was exploring up there, she's my sweet princess Indi now 😊
Mom and I are team Leopard Gecko all the way. They are easier to find in their enclosure. They like to sit with us and visit. They don't get frog butt when they lose their tails. We live in Kamloops BC, where it is way harder to keep the air humid. Mom bought her Alice at an Expo as a normal. Turned out she was a Giant. My Fiest is a Mack Snow. Love them both.
I got two extreme harlequin crested geckos for free recently along with their cages and they’re awesome. Super skittish at first though. I’m happy I have my gargoyle as well but even now she’s been hiding more too. Either way they’re all awesome and I can’t wait to complete my New Caledonia collection
I've had 3 leos and they're all completely different personalities lol. It completely shifts how you look at reptiles. My most recent, Mondo, has been the most work with a couple impactions just removed by the vet, but otherwise they've been wonderful pets and companions.
I have a crestie and my sister has a leo, but she said that she kinda wishes she got a crestie because they're really active at night, and their wide mouths and huge eyes make them look really derpy and stupid, it's kinda hilarious.
My leo bounces back and forth from super sociable to completely ignoring me. He usually doesn’t want to be touched or handles unless I spend at least an hour messing around in his cage and keeping my hand by him a day. Cool lil dude though.
Al’s right I also gotta say “ where are they giving them away for free?” I would literally take them all. Here in the states I have never come around a free reptile except my wild rescues. I paid $40 for my crested when it was on sale but they run about $60 here in the states. Price is about the same with leopards
i have a leopard gecko named tostito and i intend to get another leopard gecko! for me, its the cuteness factor and the fact i can pull my little guy out of his tank to let him crawl on me while im doodling or editting videos. something about those eyelids and long smile is to die for. crested geckos certainly have their own cuteness about them but imo doesnt compare to a leopard gecko!
I don't have either yet but I think I want a leopard gecko a bit more, they're adorable and sometimes misting setups can be difficult to setup and maintain, but also I feel like if you look at some cresties the wrong way they drop their tails xD (obviously this depends a lot on how they're handled and acclimated to people but still, haha)
I'm actually planning on getting mourning geckos! I have done a lot of research and most of their care is almost identical to crested geckos. I'm super excited to set up a bioactive jungle terrarium for them! I know it's possible to do bioactive set ups for drier dwelling species like leopard geckos but it's just easier to find a clean up crew that can survive in a humid environment rather than an arid one.
Just be ready to find tons of eggs and house them. My mourning geckos multiplied into near 100 in less than a year. They are very cute to watch chirp and talk to each other though! Care is exactly like cresteds
I loved my leopard gecko, watching her hunt was very fun! Speaking of morphs though? I have been looking into western hognose snakes and NOBODY in Canada seems to be breeding simple normal wild type hoggies. That's what I want: just a cute wild type male hognose - but nobody seems to have one. All the hognoses I see are fancy.
Ive got the worlds cutest little Rankins Dragon (Pogona Henrylawsoni). His name is Irwin Smaug. He is around one year old. And hes loving his 95x40x50cm mansion. And i love him 😍
“Like” # 1000. This was a great informational video I will share with my daughter who is torn on which of these two reptiles to acquire next and provide for.
I've got both. 2 cresties and 1 leo. I got my leo first then a crestie and then i got another crestie from a breeder and it had no tail but its still cute. My leo is in a 40gal and my cresties are in 20gal tall hexagon tank each.
the one time my crestie bit me it was like being pecked by a duckling, a little "what was that?" when i was deciding cresties won because of the heat and humidity requirements and diet. have two now and no regrets :)
I agree with you on most but it is actually easier when an animal requires less humidity because the only places that that would benefit from a dehumidifier would be Florida and the more unnatural heat the more the humidity will be removed. Also every species does good with a little humidity whereas very few do good with low humidity. What I’m actually trying to say is that the easier species would be one that you wouldn’t have to worry about the humidity at all which is the leopard gecko.
I honestly had no liking for geckos until I started watching your channel. Now I have 2 leopard geckos, 3 crested geckos, 3 gold dust day geckos, and one grumpy Leachie. They are all amazing.

I’m in Colorado! and it is dry all year round 🤦🏼♂️ so I love having a leopard gecko cause he can just chill with me all the time🤣😂
Same, the humidity is perfect here!
They’re both so different, it’s hard to compare. Leo’s are prob easier bc they don’t require misting, but it’s fun to have a tropical gecko
I think the cresties are easier because you don't need the enclosure to be hot, and they do fine without uvb where the leos will die without it.

So hard to decide
I've tended to prefer Gargoyles over Crested because they're almost identical in care while the Gargoyle can regrow their tail while Crested seem to be rare to keep them...
It would be awesome to see a gargoyle gecko vs created gecko video!
Great idea
Crested for me, absolutely love mine, and has so much personality. I feed bugs occasionally and love to see him hunt. Also the FEETS! SO CUTE 😍
“There are Giant leopard geckos.” “Leopard geckos won’t climb walls or go that far off the ground”
Me looking behind at my Giant leopard gecko spiderman-clinging to the top of her exo terra background as she climbs. “You hear that Bandit?”
Same here mine climbs all over up vines and on top of hides I just ordered some big sticks to put in since I noticed she loves to climb
I started watching you a year ago and you just helped me so much. My four idols are YOU and Snake Discovery and Clint’s Reptiles and Steve Irwin. Now after a year of watching you i have my first reptile.
Wow!! What reptile?😀
@@Geckogirlguide a Rankins Dragon
Oh I can decide. So I have both. Several of both.
Thanks! There both such fantastic pets , and even better beginner reptiles! Thanks again for all you do!
Yeah I loved this vid!
I own both and gotta say they both have pros and cons but I don't think either is better
Wow eh!
I have a Leopard Gecko that actually jumps and she also likes to climb almost vertical.
could you do an updated hognose snake care guide?! i love your channel xx
Is there a video for his leopard gecko enclosure? I imagine the clips are of his enclosure... I want inspiration for bioactive...
That black leopard gecko was beautiful! Great video Adam!
I love em
For the temperature humidity part, I partly agree with you, but only because you live In a cold place, just like you said, adding humidity is easier than removing it, and that's the same with temperature, a person like you who lives in a cold environment might be luckier with cresties, but a person like me( I live in Italy) in the summer it gets really hot, and it's a pain to cool the enclosures down
not you coming for clint’s reptiles gig 😭 greta video though, love your channel
This video idea is great, hope to see more "duels" for comparison
Love your vids, bro!
thanks so much! Only canada sales for now
Appreciate the timely response!
The fact a Leopard Gecko was on his shoulder says it all... Leopard Geckos win the overall simply for being more personable.
Shelby is 😍😍😍!
I have a Leo. It was love at first sight, but it took me 7 years to finally get one because I'm a bit commitment phobic. 😂
For new years I actually got a leopard gecko, his name is Chomper because when I was feeding him he bit my finger
My crestie seems to be missing something upstairs. She quit eating in a 18x18x24. I moved her to an 18x18x18 and she's done so much better and is back eating. I was saving that enclosure. But now I'll look for something to live in the 24 tall.
You are the best RUclipsr ever wicked wickens reptile have a super day have a great day have a nice day wicked wickens reptile
Vanessa……I see you commenting, on all the reptile channels I watch, in the same way. I’ve got to ask; do you know them?
@@loriw2661 LOOOOOOOL
I see her on all the reptile channels I watch to. I just assumed it was a coincidence because we both watch reptile stuff
I have a crested gecko called borys and I love him so much.
I plan to have both I got a leopard gecko not to long ago little baby named him sir Archibald pinwall and I love watching him eat and hunt down cricket’s it’s been awesome
I got a crested gecko because I wanted a arboreal species that will enjoy the plants that I put in the enclosure. Best choice ever😊
personally leos are my fav but due to the mega high humidity in my room [ due to all my aquariums] they are not an option and i can only own terrestrial reptiles or amphibians. might consider african fat tailed geckos
I've heard a lot of mixed things on cohabing cresties. You should do a little break down on the how to and maybe bring in another big creator who focuses on cresties!
great idea
That being said, my leo is 5 years old whereas my crestie is just a baby so the interaction level or handability may change :)
Overall, I do love both species.
That’s so awesome
My leo bounces back and forth from super sociable to completely ignoring me. He usually doesn’t want to be touched or handles unless I spend at least an hour messing around in his cage and keeping my hand by him a day. Cool lil dude though.
Al’s right I also gotta say “ where are they giving them away for free?” I would literally take them all. Here in the states I have never come around a free reptile except my wild rescues. I paid $40 for my crested when it was on sale but they run about $60 here in the states. Price is about the same with leopards
YES! I've been back and fourth on which one I want....I finally decided It's BOTH! LOL
I just got a leopard gecko and a crested gecko. I really like both, but like the leopard gecko the most because he gets excited about food
Good thing I have both; and love them both equally!
Same!!
i have a leopard gecko named tostito and i intend to get another leopard gecko! for me, its the cuteness factor and the fact i can pull my little guy out of his tank to let him crawl on me while im doodling or editting videos. something about those eyelids and long smile is to die for. crested geckos certainly have their own cuteness about them but imo doesnt compare to a leopard gecko!
Leos will always be my fav!
Great video!
I have both. My crestie is male and leo is female. They both have their quirks, but I 💛 them
I love both species
hey i just got my first leopard gecko and their so cute my first real pet and my first time being a pet owner today
I keep my male crested gecko in an 18x18x36 🦎 He really does use every inch of that space!
Can we do a top 5 best animals for cohabitation?
I'm thinking of getting a Leppard soon. Just getting the enclosure on point.I can't decide if I want to try bioactive or not.
Ive got the worlds cutest little Rankins Dragon
(Pogona Henrylawsoni).
His name is Irwin Smaug.
He is around one year old.
And hes loving his 95x40x50cm mansion. And i love him 😍
I have two leopard geckos in the same tank, they have loved together for their entire lives. Is this still okay? The tank is big enough for one also.
I love crested gecko. I'm also weird and would prefer to get one that already dropped their tail because the frog butts are just the cutest thing ever
I love leos and used to breed them. I now have crested geckos (not breeding them). I love both spieces, but my favorite are my gargoyle geckos
Leopard geckos all day every day! I have 2, and I'm thinking of getting a 3rd! Love my little lizards. ♥️ 🦎
Great video. I have 3 crested geckos and I leopard Gecko.
the one time my crestie bit me it was like being pecked by a duckling, a little "what was that?"
when i was deciding cresties won because of the heat and humidity requirements and diet. have two now and no regrets :)
Oh I gotta mention that enclosures are a biotch for keeping humidity in also
My crestie says in his unbiased opinion, he's the best.
Next, can you do African fat-tailed geckos vs Gargoyle geckos ?
for sure!
