Hey Tom, for someone who's dreamt of this trip, this is a real treat to see it all from your point of view, I get the impression you were in seventh heaven! Fantastic images, great variety. Thanks a bunch for sharing this with us. Hope the rest of 2024 is equally rewarding for you, take care!
Things have definitely changed from the last time i was in Churchill, that being back in 1981 when I was working in the NWT for Pacific Western Airlines. As a wildlife photographer, the video makes me want to go back. Thanks for taking us along, wonderful images. Cheers,
Cheers Tom, it was a fantastic location and experience, really glad you like the style of images, I do like the more environmental shots, and working in B&W I feel really worked for the shoot! Cheers, Tom
I've been to Churchill in 2017 and saw the bears myself Amazing with a capital A. Your heart rate probably also increased when you saw the first one? Mine did. We took de train from Winnipeg to Churchill and flew back after the trip. Thanks for sharing!
I am really interested to see how you carry the equipment, and if there is some tips to know against the cold temperature using Z9 and Z8 (battery, lenses, ...)
My Z9 / 600 f4 Z + (Z8/300mm/24-120mm/35mm) was all put in my Lowepro whistler 450 (I’ve modified by taking out the hard plastic inserts to allow more gear to fit inside) my Gitzo is the smaller 4 series that has 5 sections allowing for it to easily fit in my hold luggage)
@@nikon_z9_images so I’m going to be putting a gear video out next week with the info about how I carried all my gear if that’s something they will be interesting? 😉 I carried two cameras, out and ready to shoot, tripod over my shoulder with the 600mm and Z9 mounted!
14:40 Do you have a custom button set as "action seetings"? (Example: 2500th, F4, ISO Auto) To have the back up, if you use a slow shutter speed for showing motion and then some important action happens.
Personally I haven’t set that up on my camera (although I am planning to trial it this winter) I’ve always just worked in the way that I’m working on a certain type of image then quickly shift my settings (only takes me a few seconds) but yeah I think I need to take advantage of the more customisable options on my Z9/8 and if I’m honest I’m still honing in on the AF modes I prefer for various situations/Subjects! I wonder if how I end up with my camera setup for 2024 might be something you guys are interested in? Cheers and happy Xmas! Tom
@@TomMasonPhoto Hello Tom, of course we are interested in your camera settings and (camera). workflow, especially on location. Merry christmas and best regards, Eike
When you say your a Professional Tog . Do you mean the number of years using gear Or do you work for a noted Publication or freelance or selff employed doing weddings etc Can you clarify please
I’ve been professional and freelance since I was 20, worked for multiple publications with stories articles, sold images through libraries, worked for tourist boards, NGOs and corporate clients. Wildlife photography has been my sole source of income for more than a decade - I’ve been taking images using gear since I was 11!
Then must be hard to sell your services if you advertise yourself as a non-professional. You are whatever you be,I’ve you are! Get after it, chase the dream, don’t live in one.
Sounds like an amazing trip, but too rich for my blood. I took a look at Churchill Wild's website and was shocked how expensive it is to do just a few days with them. I'm sure its necessary to charge that much due to the remote nature of their resort, but man, I could do a dozen or more other trips to also spectacular and cool places for the cost of a trip up there. Just too rich for my blood.
The trips are in the expensive end of the market but due to the remoteness and infrastructure costs they allow you to have unique experiences that really do give you polar bears without the crowds, also the ability to work from the ground, using my tripod and having the ability to stand and shoot not from a vehicle is rather wonderful, but I do understand it’s out of the price range for many!
Beautiful shots and story! The last shot at 17:10 or so was brilliant! 😀
Fantastic, thank you. All the best for 2024. 👍📷😎
Thanks Rob, all the best for 2024 to you too!
Brilliant! Polar Scares have always been a favorite of mine.
Great video and storytelling, Tom! Really enjoyed it. What an amazing way to experience Polar bears!
Thanks Jonas, it was certainly a fantastic way to see my first Polar bear, stood on my own feet, tripod firmly on the ground, rather ideal!

I was at Dymond Lodge last year and it was indeed fantastic. I also took photos that I now love. Your video certainly did it justice.
It was just such an awesome place to experience and being out on the Ice with the bears on foot was rather special! So glad you had a great time!
Great video Tom. Loved hearing your enthusiasm.
Cheers Kevin! Glad you enjoyed the video
Wonderful tour with bears 😊
Thank you very much!

Great adventure and video, Tom! I'm a "wildlife in their environment" photos type of guy, so I loved your environmental shots of the polar bears!
Yeah I love the more environmental images, something I’ve always been drawn towards when shooting!
Hello Tom, Great srory looking forwards to hearing more in more of your videos.
Thank you! Hopefully there will be many many more videos in 2024!

Merry Christmas Tom! 🎄🎅
Merry Christmas to you too!
That would be my next destination !
Great photos. Were the panoramas stitched? Thanks.
Yeah the Panoramas were all stitched in adobe Lightroom, all made with the 600mm F4 Z TC
@@TomMasonPhoto That’s awesome. Thank you!
Good Video Tom
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers, Tom

Great work. How did having the gear you wanted or needed work (Z9 + 600 + tripod)? Luggage on the smaller planes and kit on walking safaris?

@@TomMasonPhoto Thanks. I use the same tripod! Did you carry all your kit on the walking safaris? How about a rain cover during the snow drifts?

I'm a wildlife photographer for over fourth years but don't consider myself a professional.
Then must be hard to sell your services if you advertise yourself as a non-professional. You are whatever you be,I’ve you are! Get after it, chase the dream, don’t live in one.
The difference between an amateur and professional is one earns their money from it and the other doesn't.
