I loved what you said about mentors. I came from an abusive and unstable family life. When I was 16 I went on a YTS program. I was sent to a workshop that did antique and heritage property restoration. My bos was a guy with lifetimes of experience and knowledge. He taught me how to think, plan and execute most things that I know now. He also showed me how stability, kindness trust can transform a persons life. RIP John Hollingsworth, a giant in my life.
My mother's maiden name is Hollingsworth, it's kind of an unusual name where I live. I'm happy to know there's a possible distant relative with the same last name who has made such a positive impact in someone's life. :)
You’re a special person to respect and talk about the neighbor that taught you. The car is gorgeous I’m sure your neighbor would smile knowing you appreciate his friendship & knowledge. !
Can see the dogs breathing in the cold air. Very heartfelt tribute for Dan's friend! I honestly teared up at that. I'm glad that Dan had a good role model in his life! Look at how hard he works to rebuild the chateau and doing it right!❤
31 years as a high school automotive mechanics teacher. Your words about mentoring & sharing knowledge are very near & dear to me . I’d be happy to advise you on why the car didn’t start.
Dan I love your blog and rarely miss it. I was brought into the emergency in pretty bad shape and missed an episode or two but this one touched me. I moved away from home and was called back shortly after to be with my parents as they died. It broke my heart but upon return the elderly Acadian man next door took me in under his wing like a father. He taught me so much about the 100 acres of wood bush I was turning into my off grid home as his family had lived there for generations. He has dementia now and hardly remembers me,so I know your tears. I’m so glad I didn’t miss this episode from my hospital bed as it’s one of the first things I’ve watched. Thank you Dan.
I hope you recover well & soon. I know how frustrating & debilitating it is when recovery takes time - I’m trying to get back from a very long overdue hip replacement & I know it’s not easy - having Dan’s vlogs to look forward to is great. Also Brian’s & Chateau Diaries. All the best from an overheated (37°C) Johannesburg, South Africa
The choice of car for the chateau is so very appropriate on many levels. The story behind it and its sentimental ties to Dan, but also because it simply suits the building! It just looks right. A very elegant, exquisite car it is too!
Dan I have owned a 1952 Riley for almost 40 years. It is an amazing car and very nice to drive. The RM Club is great for your car. In Scotland we have the Scottish Riley Enthusiasts Club which acts as an umbrella organisation for all three Riley clubs in Scotland. Any Riley owner will help you. Enjoy your car.
And without realizing it you are a mentor and inspiration to at least 575K people that look forward to your next vlog. Beautiful car and great back story. You deserve only the best!!!!
😥 a truly beautiful story, and I'm grateful that you were able to share. That is one magnificent beautiful car and you will always have your mentor in your heart. I am sure he is watching over you and so proud of your efforts❤
Dan, don't underestimate yourself... for many of us, you are a role model yourself... an inspiration and a man with a real vision!!! Really sorry for your loss... 😢 But anyway: Happy Birthday Dan 🎈🥳🎉🎁🤗
Dan - what a moving segment about the man who took you under his wing and shared his ideals and wisdom with you. I got teary eyed. What a beautiful car - is it the one that he had? I hope that the electrics are hooked up tonight!
Important message to you Dan!! I hope you read this. This morning at 4:00 a.m. I was watching another vlog I watch. It's called, "Yad Vashem". The RUclips channel is about testimonies of elderly Jewish people who grew up during World War II. This particular vlog was posted 2 to 3 days ago. It's of a woman, her name is Fanny Ben Ami, who spoke of being sent to the Chateau de Chaumont during the war. I could not believe she said your Chateau. Unfortunately, I don't have a computer or I would forward the site to you. Hopefully, it will be exciting for you to read about one surviving child who hid at your Chateau.
FWIW, Fanny Ben Ami was mentioned before on this channel. There's a 2016 film that was made based on her memoir ("Le voyage de Fanny" - "Fanny's Journey" in English). The film shows the children in the chateau at the beginning, but of course they used a different chateau, as this one was in ruins when the film was made. What a great find, the RUclips video of her telling the story herself!
Thanks so much for sharing your story. I recently completed an organizing job of a hoarder's house and did a bit of renovation to get it ready for sale. I had a few contractors who had me in tears. They didn't deign to bring a broom or a garbage bag to clean up the debris at the end of the day. The work was sloppy and without care. There was a feeling of getting it done as fast as possible without a care to the little details to get on to the next job and pay cheque. I love that you appreciate people who take care and are proud of the jobs they do. As a professional organizer, I do my best within the budget alloted and leave the project house each day in better condition in which I found it. You were lucky to meet a mentor and wise enough to understand the valuable things he had to teach you.
Goooood morning from Tarnagulla Victoria Australia 🇦🇺. I am so grateful for Dan, Nick and Brian renovating this beautiful chateau and putting it on You Tube for us to watch ❤
Dan, we are truly sorry for your loss. As someone who lacks that role model, I can only thank you for filling that role through your videos and inspiring many of us to pursue a similar passion. Though you may grieve for a fallen friend, you are embodying his ways.
Bigger is better on the garden, more room for the trees to grow and for wider paths for strolling around. The car is absolutely gorgeous. So glad you covered it immediately. Congrats on that. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dan!!!
Dan that is a great story about the car. I can see how much he meant to you god may he rip. You have a heart of gold Dan you have great things to come yet😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ here’s wishing great success.
Please build that beautiful car a real home at the chateau protected from the weather. Your mentor story hit home with me as well when you stopped it showed he meant so much to you having mentor is something we all need thank you Dan
What you said about positive male role models for young men is so true and what is lacking for a lot of young men and boys, thanks for showing your emotions ❤
That car is a thing of beauty, a piece of art. Your mentor and friend, knew exactly who to pass his amazing auto onto for the proper care and attention.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend...😔 I'm glad, and grateful, that you got to have him in your life - what an amazing set of experiences and memories for you. 🦋
Dan, I’m sorry your Engineer friend passed on; it’s clear how much he meant to you. How lovely and fortuitous you had him to mentor you. That’s a rare gift indeed. 😊 Merry Christmas 🎄from Ontario, Canada. 🍁🇨🇦
Where you have the car, critters will get into it. They will chew up wires, upholstery, and build nests. The savings on not paying for real storage will be dwarfed by the cost of repairs. Beautiful car.
Dan what a beautiful tribute to some one whom you looked up to and who gave you so much because of who he was, and a pat on the back for yourself for being so open to look, learn and appreciate all he offered 🥰🥰🥰🥰
So good to see Davy at the chateau. He must be so happy to see everything coming together. Next Spring it would be so nice to have a full video of the gardens at the front of the chateau and of these ones being planted now...this place is going to look amazing!! Love the Chateau's new car and what a legacy this mentor left you. He certainly changed your life and you Dan, have been an inspiration to so many and I am sure, to your sons. Good job on the garden Dan, Nick and Brian....always fun to watch!! Cheers!
So sorry for your loss! But how amazing it is to see healthy, thriving masculinity and brotherhood, and mentorship on this channel. It is such a rare gem!
THIS is why I watch you guys!!! Masculinity and its beauty has been squelched in our society. Yet, hearing your reason to continue this arduous task is because of the discipleship of your Mentor and FatherFigure was absolutely beautiful! Thank you so very much for your example! ✌️Press on, gents! Know you are making an impact that will last far beyond your years! 👍🙏👍
Dan, thanks for taking the time to remind us of those people who were our role models when we were growing up. I remember them and it brought some tears to my eyes that they aren't around now. I guess the best I can do is be a good role model for those around me, just like Dan is doing now with his renovation of the Chateau. The same goes for Nick, Brian, Calvin, and Cameron being solid friends. 0:42
You’ve come a long way from the green van. I think it’s the PERFECT chateau car!! It reminds me of Downton Abbey, so, perfect for a chateau. What a wonderful story too. I bet he’d be so happy to know you have it. You BETTER take care of it like he did! That thing is in mint condition. It’s amazing!
Dan. I am so sorry for your loss. People come to mean so much in our lives even if not super close. I'm so sorry. But what a joy to remember! A chateau spirit for sure! And you've done much the same bringing us into your project.
As a 46 year old man, I know exactly what you mean about role models. Everyone needs one and when you have the chance to be one do it. I guarantee it won't be the most conventional or best timing but it will always be so worth it in the end. And that car is the most French thing I've seen in a long time love it and it will go great with the chateau
Role model: the best thing you can have in your life, one who has taken a path like the one you hope to. Being a role model is the most fulfilling role you can take on. Thank you for your beautiful observation, and to you, Dan, for sharing that story.
Dan what a beautiful touching story to your role model. And how you are now inspiring so many others. From one tire biter to another….your Riley is Divine❤.
I fell in love with all things Art Deco in the 1980s. From architecture, to fashion, to automobiles, to music; the style remains unmatched. The French curves on the fenders of that fabulous car are magnificent!
8:55 You’re a role model for me. You give me hope every day to believe that I can create a meaningful life and work on a project of my own that brings me fulfillment and makes me feel alive, even though I still can’t see the path clearly. Thank you, Dan, for being exactly who you are.
I've been watching for like... 2 years now and today's video is one of the most interesting (among many). 1. Stunning views of the chateau from the garden. 2. Holy cow the garden is coming along... fast! 3. A car??! An unexpected surprise that is both classy and meaningful. 4. More stunning views of the garden in that light. This is my favorite youtube channel. Hope everybody hits the like button.
Overwhelmed and overjoyed. Like your dear friend mentored you and taught you the attitude to doing things, you in turn are teaching us. Thank you for the gift of you Dan. ❤❤❤
You are a credit to your mentor, Dan, and are keeping his memory alive as a model of industry and determination. May he RIP. Perfect garage for the moment for that beautiful Riley. Good job getting it erected and great work by the team in the garden and the team in the chateau 👍
Dan, I'm very sorry for your loss. I know how it feels, as my close friend and mentor from our time Serving in HM Forces has also sadly passed away, beaten after a long and courageous fight with cancer, on December 2nd 2024. Just like your friend and neighbour, my friend will always be greatly missed. I hope you manage to get his Legacy, the Chateau Car, up and running, and it serves you well for many years to come. Keep up the good work, Dan!
Wow! I feel the same way you do about older man being a role model to a younger man. Mine was a voice teacher by the name of William Klein. He allowed me to do his yard work to pay for my voice lessons and in no time, as his wife later told me, I became the son they never had together. I was devoted to him until he passed at 93 and I think about him whenever I do something important that needs my concentration. Thank you for your story about your friend. It meant a lot to me. DA
Just when I thought, right, this man has started with a wheel barrel, a shovel and a massive dream! Then you bring this dream car 'Riley' (I love vintage cars btw) with the most touching tribute behind it, and making it the official car of Chateau Chamont! Also your charity for 'Movember'. I don't normally comment, but this brought me to tears, seeing the human behind the man. Dan I hope life is always kind to you and rewards you accordindly! 🙏
The masons are hard a work doing the walls within the Chateau AND meanwhile on the grounds outside the planting continues with the 3 Muskateers. Oh now I know why Davy was at Chateau de Lanlande. He was coming to see the process of planting. OMG DAN.... Merry Christmas to you!!!!!!!!! You're worth it though. Sorry for the loss of such a friend Dan. He obviously admire you and what you were accomplishing and this gift will always be a great reminder of that friendship.
Happy Birthday Dan!!! A Riley car for the Chateau, a nice-looking car Dan. Electricity hooked up and on for your Birthday! What a gift if it happens. The Basement is looking nice, can't wait to see it finished. Can't wait for the maze to be done and in bloom too.
The chateau car is gorgeous ❤ My first car was a vintage. Drove it for years and loved it so much. Helped that my brother restored it so was on hand for repairs. Your friend sounds like my brother. Unfortunately I had to hand it back because I couldn’t fit 2 baby seats in the back. It’s in his shed waiting for one of us to come into a decent lotto win.
I am praying on the electricity to go smoothly. The masons are doing awesome 👌 work. I also appreciate Dave and pink champagne currant planting 😊 bless the hands of all the workers today.
When men open their hearts especially in loving memory of a passed deep influence, I see strength instead of sentimentality. All the best wishes for successfully bringing back Chaumont to its full glory. You CAN do it!!!
So lovely to see you've kept a piece of beautiful history from your mate and mentor. Very touching indeed and the official car for the chateau seems so befitting for what sounds like a great man indeed. The car is absolutely beautiful!!! Looks to be the right ear for part of the Chateaus story too. ❤❤ I did shed a tear when you choked up. (Yes I am a girl lolol). Kind of reminds me of my dad who I lost to tragedy when I was 9. These are great men gone too soon for us. ❤❤
1949/50 I started my first job at the local Brewery, I was just 15 - the director had two RM Rileys , a black one and a white one, I vowed one day I would have one, I still love that car, such style.
The car is beautiful, the garden is going to be beautiful, the chateau is beautiful and you Dan, and your work ethic are incredible. Just stay being you 🤗
I love that the dogs are just free to be dogs! No leashes, harnesses, enclosures or otherwise! Just running about together, no worries of the equipment or noise. 🐕🐕🐕
So sorry for your loss, Dan. How nice to have the absolutely stunning Riley as a tribute to him.

I’m sure your neighbor would smile knowing you appreciate his friendship & knowledge. !
As people get older, they often start feeling like others don’t need them or their wisdom. So, you gave a great gift to your mentor as well.
Can see the dogs breathing in the cold air. Very heartfelt tribute for Dan's friend! I honestly teared up at that. I'm glad that Dan had a good role model in his life! Look at how hard he works to rebuild the chateau and doing it right!❤
I rarely comment, but today you brought me to tears. Higher truth will do that. In memory of him.
Yes, truly heartfelt...
Felt the same way.

Nothing wrong in showing your feelings Dan ... for a good friend like you had

I agree completely
The story was genuinely inspiring and the Riley is drop-dead gorgeous. A true British classic.
Fabulous Dan the history of the car and your mentor. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful memory you will always keep in your heart.

A special little hug for you at this point in the vlog Dan.

Dan, don't underestimate yourself... for many of us, you are a role model yourself... an inspiration and a man with a real vision!!! Really sorry for your loss... 😢
But anyway: Happy Birthday Dan 🎈🥳🎉🎁🤗
Is it his birthday? Tomorrow the 13th is mine. I’m celebrating my second 69th. My Grandson told me last year, that I will forever be 69.
Dan - what a moving segment about the man who took you under his wing and shared his ideals and wisdom with you. I got teary eyed. What a beautiful car - is it the one that he had? I hope that the electrics are hooked up tonight!
Absolutely true!
What a beautiful tribute to the man and his listing impact on your life. His lessons now reach thousands through RUclips. He did well.

You are a good roll model and mentor ❤
yes there's a whole wikipedia page about the chateau! i found out about its history on there!
Yad Vashem has a few videos of her. Worth the watch.
I'm really afraid that mice will get into that lovely old car and ruin it. A proper garage or even the chateau basement?
That car is absolutely fantastic! And with that backstory there is no other choice!
Great work!
The mason guys are doing a great job
Shame they're gonna get horrendous tinnitus. Pulling a hood up is not the same as wearing proper ear defenders..I really hope they have ear plugs. 🤞
@@YesBruv105 They work in masonry, ears and hands are the first things to go lol
He was meant to be your mentor! He knew it would pay off to teach you most of what he knew! RIP 🕊️❤️🙏
Ahh Dan, you made me cry talking about your mentor. How lucky that he was on your doorstep. Fate....xxx
Touching tribute to a dear friend. Excellent choice of car in his memory and yours. Respect to you and your family and friends worldwide 😊
Dan, we are truly sorry for your loss. As someone who lacks that role model, I can only thank you for filling that role through your videos and inspiring many of us to pursue a similar passion. Though you may grieve for a fallen friend, you are embodying his ways.
Those Riley’s were one of the nicest cars ever made. The example you have is particularly fine. Beautiful.
That car is a beauty ❤.
I can just see a couple getting married at the Chateau and being driven off in that car to start their honeymoon.
I just wish there were more people like you Dan. What your friend gave to you, you give to us. And I am so grateful for that ❤️❤️❤️
Bigger is better on the garden, more room for the trees to grow and for wider paths for strolling around. The car is absolutely gorgeous. So glad you covered it immediately. Congrats on that. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dan!!!
It's rough losing your friends and role models. Beautiful homage.

You are a credit to your mentor, Dan, and are keeping his memory alive as a model of industry and determination. May he RIP. Perfect garage for the moment for that beautiful Riley. Good job getting it erected and great work by the team in the garden and the team in the chateau 👍
Belated Birthday greetings, Dan 🎉 The Riley was a fitting and deserved birthday treat!
DA
Love the château car and the inspirational story behind it.❣I think the car fits the chateau perfectly!!
Nope! I’m not crying!! Absolutely lovely story! I love watching you make a difference in this world! Thank you!! ❤️
This is so awesome! We are in South Africa and my dad has been working on a Riley to restore it.😊
Brian showing off his balancing skills...obviously not trained by Le Cirque du Soliel! 😂
Fantastic -the last of the 'proper' Riley's -great choice for the chateau car!
Wow, that beautiful old Riley!! Look after it, it's lovely!!
I'm so excited to see the garden in spring
Keep on "working in a good way." Best advise ever.
So lovely to see you've kept a piece of beautiful history from your mate and mentor. Very touching indeed and the official car for the chateau seems so befitting for what sounds like a great man indeed. The car is absolutely beautiful!!! Looks to be the right ear for part of the Chateaus story too. ❤❤
I did shed a tear when you choked up. (Yes I am a girl lolol). Kind of reminds me of my dad who I lost to tragedy when I was 9. These are great men gone too soon for us. ❤❤
By the way, love the Riley…..fits perfectly with the chateau. 👍
Just stay being you 🤗
What an absolutly beautiful car !
And thanks for Brian and Nicks shennangins !
Nick didn't measure wrong... a bigger garden is always a good thing
I'm so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful way to remember your mentor. Well done gentlemen.
What a beautiful homage to your friend.
Sorry for your loss Dan.
I love that the dogs are just free to be dogs! No leashes, harnesses, enclosures or otherwise! Just running about together, no worries of the equipment or noise.

Meanwhile my Frenchie is enjoying the electric lap blanket with me. But she likes watching the dogs on TV 🩷
4 legged diggers❤😂🐾🐾🐾🐾
Except for the fact a male dog came onto the property and impregnated his female. Don't need any more surprises.
