A truly magical film largely unknown to younger audiences today! Thanks to Martin Scorsese for championing the basically independent team of the Archers and keeping their artistry alive for future generations!

Besides Verdi's La Traviata, Tales of Hoffman my favourite opera...Bacarolle is pure, undiluted, unmixed, concentrated musical and artistic perfection.

I also love Cavaleria Rusticana, music is so beautiful, see one conducted by Carlos Kleiber with Elena Obraztsova and Placido Domingo.

@@bradshawvincentI don't know why but I prefer this..maybe it's because it's a silent film and that makes it even more magical

    English translation
    Barcarolle
Lovely night, oh, night of love
    Smile upon our joys!
Night much sweeter than the day
    Oh beautiful night of love!
Time flies by, and carries away
    Our tender caresses for ever!
Time flies far from this happy oasis
    And does not return
    Burning zephyrs
    Embrace us with your caresses!
    Burning zephyrs
    Give us your kisses!
    Your kisses! Your kisses! Ah!
Lovely night, oh, night of love
    Smile upon our joys!
Night much sweeter than the day
    Oh, beautiful night of love!
    Ah! Smile upon our joys!
Night of love, oh, night of love!
Ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah!

I have a DVD and watched it already half a dozen times. Most actors are ballet dancers, Shearer, Tcherina (shown here with ballet dancer Robert Helpmann), she danced at Bolshoi in the 50s, Helpman was a partner of Margo Fonteyn at Royal Ballet for 21 years, then there is Leonid Massine and Frederick Ashton and Hoffman is played by a wonderful tenor Robert Rounseville who sings his own parts ( you can see him standing on the bridge) , others were dubbed by opera singers

Looks like a prototype for what Fellini would do later on...

Yes, in fact I would say that Il Casanova borrowed freely from this film.

Beautiful, both music and film. But what the heck is going on? Does this opera have any kind of actual plot?

Here is the gist of it: The demon Dappertutto has ensnared the courtesan Giulietta to collect souls for him. (They are the couple in the gondola) The poet Hoffmann (on the bridge) resists her charms - for now - while (the kneeling) Schlemil has already given Giulietta his shadow and tries to show his devotion to her, but she has no further interest in him.
