A truly magical film largely unknown to younger audiences today! Thanks to Martin Scorsese for championing the basically independent team of the Archers and keeping their artistry alive for future generations!
I have a DVD and watched it already half a dozen times. Most actors are ballet dancers, Shearer, Tcherina (shown here with ballet dancer Robert Helpmann), she danced at Bolshoi in the 50s, Helpman was a partner of Margo Fonteyn at Royal Ballet for 21 years, then there is Leonid Massine and Frederick Ashton and Hoffman is played by a wonderful tenor Robert Rounseville who sings his own parts ( you can see him standing on the bridge) , others were dubbed by opera singers
Here is the gist of it: The demon Dappertutto has ensnared the courtesan Giulietta to collect souls for him. (They are the couple in the gondola) The poet Hoffmann (on the bridge) resists her charms - for now - while (the kneeling) Schlemil has already given Giulietta his shadow and tries to show his devotion to her, but she has no further interest in him.
Besides Verdi's La Traviata, Tales of Hoffman my favourite opera...Bacarolle is pure, undiluted, unmixed, concentrated musical and artistic perfection.
I prefer this to the team's better known 'Red Shoes'- the book is less hokey- but it fared less well at the time and was distributed in truncated form, with the third episode (Dr Mirakel) cut. Martin Scorsese saw it as a kid on b&w television; it was one of the films that made him fall in love with the medium, and years later his editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, would marry one of its directors, Michael Powell.
This restored 1951 film is just out of this world. It is an opera, a ballet ,a pupett show and so much more. Ideal introduction to opera/ballet and children's delight IT IS A MUST GET and is available at a very reasonable prize from Amazonwww.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PIN4PTQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Ruby looked so beautiful in this number, especially in the close-up of her before the camera pulls back and shows her dancing and singing with the other lovely women in those very nice white dresses. Ruby looked sweet and gorgeous throughout this number actually; the part I mentioned above, the whole time she's walking around those structures twirling her dress around, her popping up out of the floor and then singing again, and also while on the subway smiling and then falling asleep on Dick Powell's shoulder, that last part not in this particular video though. I own the film "Dames" so I've seen the whole number with the wonderful Ruby. I've seen Ruby's other films too, 42nd street, Footlight parade, Gold-diggers 33, Flirtation walk, Coleen, and in Jolson's Get into your dance. Ruby is great in all of them. It shows how amazing Ruby was when one of the biggest names of the late 1920s and 1930s film era fell for and married Ruby, when I'm sure that Al, one of the most famous stars of the time, could've married a very large choice of women.
English translation Barcarolle Lovely night, oh, night of love Smile upon our joys! Night much sweeter than the day Oh beautiful night of love! Time flies by, and carries away Our tender caresses for ever! Time flies far from this happy oasis And does not return Burning zephyrs Embrace us with your caresses! Burning zephyrs Give us your kisses! Your kisses! Your kisses! Ah! Lovely night, oh, night of love Smile upon our joys! Night much sweeter than the day Oh, beautiful night of love! Ah! Smile upon our joys! Night of love, oh, night of love! Ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah! ah!

Beautiful, both music and film. But what the heck is going on? Does this opera have any kind of actual plot?

I also love Cavaleria Rusticana, music is so beautiful, see one conducted by Carlos Kleiber with Elena Obraztsova and Placido Domingo.
Can you give the English lyrics of the song?
Klasse! !!!! Lydia
Сказки Гофмана - потрясающая опера! Людмила Черина великая Женщина! Фильм отличный, но ему далеко до творения Оффенбаха
And the opera itself is far from what Hoffmann wrote
The most beautiful part of the most beautiful film ever made!
TRULY!!

I would love to see this film in it's entirety, but, alas it's not available.
I bought a copy on Amazon a few years ago.

George Romero, the director, considers this the greatest movie ever made. So do I!

unitardization Thank you. Great melody.
yep
Arcy Voz Cavalier as here.
Looks like a prototype for what Fellini would do later on...
Yes, in fact I would say that Il Casanova borrowed freely from this film.
This movie looks like no other movie I've ever seen and I've seen quite a few
check out "The Red Shoes" by the same directors Powell and Pressburger.
@@bradshawvincentI don't know why but I prefer this..maybe it's because it's a silent film and that makes it even more magical
Amazing
