The "you weren't there so you know nothing!" coming from Bible believers is a delicious self-own.
I'd love to challenge a Christian evolution-denier who says that, by asking them how they can make any claims whatsoever about Jesus... IF YOU WEREN'T THERE. Watching them try to figure that out would be like watching someone drown.
@@UTU49
Unlikely. If they think that the Bible is God’s word and the Bible says God was there. That’s all they need in their minds. They have the best witness.
The problem they have is trying to convince us that their witness exists. Their book claims we already know he exists and their book can’t be wrong.
Except that we don’t know that he exists, therefore the book is wrong.
It’s hard to argue with people who have accepted false statements as undeniably true.
@@zemoxian
Yeah. They've acquired habits of not thinking.
I have no problem with people believing in a religion.
With Christianity, however, so many of them seem to think that they can use Bible quotes to convince other people of things... EVEN WHEN those other people DO NOT believe in the Bible. This indicates to me that their religion has severely damaged their intelligence.
It makes me want to quote Hindu writings to them and try to get them to understand that it is 100% idiotic for them to expect me to find the Bible any more convincing than they find the Hindu writings.
It seems that many Christian churches come with strong traditions of not questioning and not thinking... and it seems intellectually cancerous to me.
Your name is very familiar. Is it just from this kind of video... or are you a fan of some of the same movies or TV shows as I am?

That was fucking beautiful.
"Why is a woman talking about Science?"
For some reason this made me burst out laughing. Anyone who isn't aware that there are successful women in Science, is living in the dark ages.
I think the reason why I burst out laughing is because this is just such an incredibly weak statement to make. It's like saying, "No one as short as you can be smart." It's disconnected from reality.
I have a Math degree. A couple of my favorite instructors were women, because my particular Math department happened to have a lot of female instructors.

As someone who does not take money from gullible parishioners, I agree.
@@Akira-jd2zr I recently viewed a lecture by a physicist from Oxford, I think it was, and while I don't remember his name, nor the precise title of the lecture, it was something to the effect of, "Why God makes a poor scientific theory." A quick RUclips search should produce the correct result. In any case, at one point, he states that the best argument he can posit for the existence of God is the 'fine-tuning' of the physical properties of the universe, and how very unlikely it is that we would have a life-sustaining universe if said properties were a random occurrence. Even Neil DeGrasse Tyson has stated publicly that among the world's elite scientists, 7% still believe in, and pray to a personal God. He wonders at the fact that this number is a non-zero value. Cognitive dissonance, as one commenter quipped in this thread? Quite possible, but not in the direction one might expect. When one personally encounters the presence of the Holy, who is a being wholly other than we, one comes away with a renewed perspective on just how "cognitively dissonant" the best, highest, and most well-ordered of human thought actually is.

Ugh. I'm a fellow woman, not in academia and not in science but in engineering, and the condescending "honeys" and "sweeties" just chap my hide. I'm twice Erika's age, so I don't get it as much anymore, but when I *was* her age I had to use my gender-neutral middle name professionally just to get a call back on my CV, even with two post-grad engineering degrees, only to be called "honey" and "sweetie" during the interview when I managed to get one. It was bad enough that after working a few jobs for which I was way overqualified and underpaid, I said "screw it" and started my own company. It *is* better now than it was when I was Erika's age, but it's still not better enough, and dickish ignorant RUclips commenters are just the worst. :p
Also, I like Erika's voice just fine, but what I really appreciate is that she enunciates, which seems to be something of a lost art these days.

Yep, they wanted a male co-signer. In 2000, not 1950.
This is why I roll my eyes when people say, "But women have equal rights now!" Because all of this kind of crap still exists, especially when women try to work in traditionally-male fields. (Or vice versa, actually.) We're technically equal *maybe* but in actual practice far from it.

Quite sure that is the unfortunate reality of many who send mean-spirited comments.
I think it’s a beautiful thing when people can be who they are without apology. I enjoy watching you and respect you for that. Love your sense of humor.
Personally, Erika, I find your courtesy towards even opponents, deep knowledge, sense of humor, and unwillingness to take yourself too seriously utterly charming.
I think you have a great future as an explainer of evolution. Richard Dawkins is an expert, but his abrasiveness and obvious contempt for Creationists probably hurts the cause more than it helps.
Stefan,
Very true. Erika's respect for religious and spiritual beliefs is critical to her success. She seems like a nice, respectful young lady who is all about scientific truth and honesty and not about inflating their own ego. As a person who loves his Higher Power and enjoys science, she's great!
Dawkins did have to put up with the mind boggling stupidity of creationists for much longer than Erika. Not everyone manages to stay polite after decades of that 💩.
Dawkins did make two humoristic videos in which he reacts to mail he received from creationists. One is called Love letters to Richard Dawkins, the other should pop up too if you search the first.
@@kellydalstok8900 , While he is older, he does seem puffed up with his own ego. He comes across as hostile to religion, not simply YEC but to any religion.
The problem with Dawkins is that he thinks that being a great biologist also makes him a great philosopher. He doesn’t argue against creationism or religion on purely scientific grounds, within his purview, instead he expounds approach to metaphysics, ontology and epistemology which more or less personifies science and then elevates “him” to a god. Often it seems that he isn’t arguing against religion at all, he’s arguing that his religion is better for X reasons. There’s nothing wrong with that on principle, Aquinas and Maimonides were some of the greatest minds in history and they did just that, but it does paint him as a massive hypocrite who is out of his depth.

The "stop getting angry!" or "you need to read Answers in Genesis" are also entertaining, like the naive commenter is unaware of how deep in the rabbit hole of YEC you've dove.
They don't know what a scientific theory is so I'm going to leave this here:
A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world.
Some people with Phd degrees do work for and support various Creationist organizations to support their ideology. This fact only proves that educated people can also be corrupted when a wealthy religious organization hands them bags of cash (un-taxed and unaccountable) to create pseudo-science on their behalf. Not a single Creationist claim has ever stood up against a reputable scientist/researcher from a vast variety of disciplines.
@@chrisgraham2904 Also the professional creationists with accredited PhD's will NEVER debate a scientist or even a layperson on RUclips. I think it's because they know they cannot defend their claims and are simply hired to find and use whatever evidence they can manipulate to gain converts

This is the best. Please team up with Emma for the next one. You two together ridiculing hate comments would be incredible.
Gutsick's voice is one of the things that make me come back here. Unique, intriguing.
Another wonderful video, thank you! Only recently discovered your channel through Paulogia and I’m obsessed. I love your style, intelligence, passion and humor.
I recently shared one of your top five videos to a NEC. I asked what she thought and she responded, “Yes! She uses a lot of big words.”…I replied, “Yes, she uses scientific terms, what did you think?”. She’s sent it to someone else to watch and they are going to discuss it first, lol.
Can't wait to hear what their joint response will be. Please post if they ever reply. Thanks
I loved the commitment to the "long-game scenario" of using science to get a man... And then in the end it boiled down to the underpants gnomes' economic theory from that episode of South Park.
Step 1. Collect underpants
Step 2. ???
Step 3. Profit!
😆😆😆
BTW, you did for reals start out in a vet clinic? In my early twenties I started off at a private, non-profit animal shelter. I badly wanted to go to school for biology and do field research...
I've never been successful in school, I'm sure I'm my own worst enemy. I went on to get a position at the municipal shelter, and being a government employee was good $$$, I enjoyed what I did (not necessarily big brain time), but it was kinda the path of least resistance and the years got away from me.
I hold a lot of admiration for you, and I'm glad to have found your channel.
Another good one was your retort to the female INCEL jab, that did give me a chuckle.
Keep up the good work! Don't forget us little people when you're rich and famous. 😉👍🏻
This is solid content right here. I got some great laughs. Keep being inspiring Erica. I want to be able to show this type of content to my daughter once she's just a bit older.
The comment at 3:40 actually made me laugh out loud, "subjects that creationists have already settled" was so awesome. I am convinced that an all powerful supernatural being put flat earthers and creationists on this planet in the last few thousand years, purely for derision, and the entertainment of those who require credible evidence for what they believe. I love channels that go through comments of dumbass haters. Love your content.
Taking an(other) page from Richard Dawkins. Reading hate mail from the willfully ignorant is good hilarious fun!
The pent up rage (or something) really made me chuckle. Stay mad boys! Also, Erika has girl cooties and is a girl!
Also, regarding your nefarious plan to snag a man, do you know if it works in the opposite direction? (Asking for a friend.)
Congratulations Erika on your engagement. Your beau is a very lucky person to have met you, and very fortunate to realize what a great partner you'll be.
People who don't agree with others is a completely normal and expected aspect of life. Our genetics predispose a majority of how we react to stimuli, coupled with environmental factors such as nutrition, toxins, availability of education, technology and experiences. I believe the most important factor in our development is receiving an education in critical thinking. The lack of critical thinking has become more prevalent when we see and hear increasingly vehement opposition to scientific fact. Facts are verifiable hypothesis. Yet people who argue against facts do so from the position of emotion or conjecture. Any emotionally based argument is supported by ego alone, not facts, which means their critical thinking is compromised. To validate the ego, you the opponent has to be seen as having inferior qualities whether they are physiological, mental, racial or ethnic. You must be perceived as being inferior in as many facets as possible, thus giving the perpetrator a FEELING of superiority thereby translating into being right. Being in my late 60's, I've never witnessed a greater decline in the acceptance of fact and common sense than now. Educational prowess for the average student is slowly but inexorably diminishing and paving the way for a new dark ages.
I know that you're very intelligent and what I'm writing is nothing new to you. It's purpose is to hopefully have negative commentors pause and reflect upon what perceived benefit is garnered by venting vitriolic comments.
A great book that touches upon the aforementioned position is " The Death of Expertise " , which also introduces the " Dunning and Kruger Effect ". It's an engaging read.
I had to laugh when you found a way to garner additional income from people who are close minded.
I enjoy your presentations and am learning some fascinating historical biology. Thank You.
Congratulations on your engagement. That response was 10/10 - definitely made me chuckle.
I love your voice! It expresses intelligence, confidence, and passion for your work. You're awesome! You may be gutsick, but you make my heart sing!
Got to love the grade school levels of disses
I am sadly going to miss this live because I apparently need a social life & am being dragged out by my friends to have one, but I am really looking forward to getting back and watching this. I predict from my experience skirmishing with YEC in Erica's comments section that its going to be comedy gold.
It's hardly fair skirmishing with halfwits or worse in a battle of wits though😉
@@vinnyganzano1930 well if they will turn up inadequately armed & equipped they have only themselves to blame.
Not to mention that long study of warfare suggests that a fair fight is the last thing you want & if the "enemy" will help you by stacking the odds against themselves why stop them
Social stuff was fun I suppose but coming home to watch this was better it had me chucking well into the night & the ending was genius
Here bc Forrest just mentioned how envious he was you did this before he even thought of it. Perfect ending. Chef's kiss!
At 3:40 oh that person. Notstayinsdowns. I debated them extensively in one thread and they basically respond with "nuh uh" over and over. And "the evidence is on my side and not yours" without ever trying to provide even one tiny iota of evidence. Truly the shallow end of the debate pond.
Oh him🙄
Yep, that sums up their arguments very well.
“I never said I wasn’t a fool. I’m just less foolish than some.”
I’m stealing that quote
Love the snark on your part and I assume it helps you keep a thick skin for some of the more hurtful comments. Interesting that none of the comment you read actually refuted anything you said.
Of course they don't. Since they can't successfully attack her points, and the facts she backs them up with....what are they left with.....
Character assassination, blithering and blathering
I like the implication in the 'god help the children' comment that kids are your primary audience. Yes... every 8 year old I know loves watching 1-3 hours videos going over the minutiae of scientific papers... this is why all childrens educational content starts with them reading scientific journals. (This is not me saying you aren't educational and informative by the way, rather it seems to me your videos are geared towards adults. Or at least teens and up)
I haven't seen a woman school so many knuckle-draggers since Jane Goodall.
I find the comment about your voice interesting because I would cast you as a Captain in Episode 2 of my Galactic Police, series. You project the confidence I would want in a Captain, yet you have the compassion I want for this character.
Lol! Thanks for the laughs 😁
PS I like your voice as it is easier to hear than most, though audio volume was lower than your usual. Keep it cranked up!
Your step by step life plan was gold! So that’s why you’re doing the masters, a man and money. Makes sense now. 🤣😂🤣
This was really fun! I really like your style, milady.
Nice fursona +1
You are one of the most well informed and polite science communicators on youtube and in general. It's a treat seeing you apply your specialized knowledge like only an expert could, thank you.
Glad to see these haters aren't getting you down! Keep up the fantastic work!
I could not see how the haters could hurt anyone. Their comments are so pathetic because none of them challenges the science, so attacking Erika is the best they have, and that adds up to - nothing
You're becoming one of my favorites.
The way you maintain your composure and humor is inspiring
