I have this memory etched into my brain when it happened. As a child, I had never seen an adult cry on national TV and was so confused at the time. Watching it now is a punch to the gut. Love you, Harry!
You are missed Mr. Harry.
It sure looked like the way he paused that he just wanted to cry. And sure enough he did. And seeing that for the first time I started crying. But. It was also the year that my beloved hometown baseball team, the Colorado Rockies not only played their first season at Coors Field, but also made the playoffs the very first time that season.
Man, although he started with the Sox and ended with the Cubs, he came full circle with the love of baseball and that's why he's a Chicago staple and legend.
He actually did Cardinal games for 20+ years
This is sort of heartbreaking to watch. Caray must've had the belief he wasn't going to be alive much longer, and his breaking down at the end is hard to watch. He said, "Steve. we may argue, but I love you" off camera. Said, "Thommy, we're going to miss you." Thom Brennaman left the Cubs after this game and moved onto FOX the following season. So sad to watch. The man loved baseball. Loved his job. Loved his crew.
