Concert piano virtuoso Jung Lin performs Franz Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2." This excerpt is taken from a program entitled "The Piano in World Civilization," featuring commentary by piano expert David Dubal.
-----
"The Piano in World Civilization" with David Dubal and Jung Lin in discussion and performance at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.
In this, its third year, Aspen Ideas Festival once again gathers scientists, artists, politicians, historians, educators, activists, and other great thinkers around some of the most important and fascinating ideas of our time. As these thinkers present their provocative ideas, they engage a sophisticated and highly motivated audience.
Jung Lin is a classical pianist who has been acclaimed for her poetic and virtuosic performances. A native of Taiwan, she conducted her own orchestral works at age 12 and has won numerous competitions. At 16, her symphonic poem, The Black Wedding, was given its premiere by the Juilliard Symphony under Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Lin graduated with honors from the Juilliard School, and she has performed at such prestigious venues as the International Keyboard Institute and Festival, the Summit Festival in China, and at Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. Late this year, Naxos will release Jung Lin's two all-Medtner CDs, including the first complete recording of the Russian composer's 38 Fairy Tales.
Liszt had very large hands, and my mother was not a large person, making it quite difficult for her to reach all the keys as a preteen. In order for her to overcome that difficulty, she practiced many hours each day to train her hands be able to reach all the keys. It paid off and resulted in her being able to play Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies #2 in 11 minutes at age 10. She had practiced to be a concert pianist up until her mother died of TB in 1932. Then when faced with the pressure of her mother’s passing and a major concert presentation, she froze and walked away to never pursued that carrier again.
Many years later, when we retrieved her piano form her grandmother’s estate, my mother would play the Hungarian Rhapsodies #2 (my favorite) included the Noon Light Sonata, Chopin’s Nocturnes and a few others for me as a young person (I still have her original sheet music).
My point is that Jung Lin seemed to be a smaller person than my mother, yet she executed that piece with skill, grace and passion. How tall is she? The piano that she used may have been 7/8 scale to allow her to play it so very well. I did detect a slight difference in style from what my mother had exhibited. Jung Lin played with softer hands and a quieter emphasis at times.
I liked her play.

Thank you for your comment Julien, I would like to hear more of Ms. Lin's music. Has Are you aware of any professional DCs that she may have recorded?
At age 10 my mother was capable of playing this piece from memory. When she played for me, many years later, her play was with sheet music. She passed away in 2001. I dearly miss her.

When it’s 11:59pm and you have a 9 page essay due at 12:00am
I am proud to be hungarian!
This is our world i hope you find it so nice as I do!
It was written by an Austrian though 😌
As I musician, I do feel she should perhaps sustain certain notes longer then she does occasionally.
And yes, I do agree that she rushes a bit now and then but not excessively.
As a concert pianist she has the right of interpretation and so forth. She's not Vanessa-Mae or Michael Flatley for heaven's sake! "Give a performer a break!"
christian arffmann Absolutely. As a pianist myself, who cannot fully play this piece(only about 1/2), I feel that anyone who can play it through in any capacity having it sound decent is pretty amazing. And the fact that she is doing it at such a young age is incredible.
I feel like she has her musical moments... But in a lot of places I feel like it's dry of emotion. Overall, I think she is good. Great technique.
This used to be my favourite version, but now I think I agree with you. It is a bit dry. I like the pace though.
Hater. It's amazing.
786 thumbs down? Miley Cyrus fans perhaps?
YOU'RE AN ASS
THANK YOU FOR TIME ,NOW GO HOME AND STAY THERE
Asian haters bro Miley fans are retards they'd never even get here tbh
I LOVE IT
the Best perfomance Ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's STUNNING! Totally amazing pianist, totally classy and beautiful lady !!!
How could people honestly dislike this? This is really good! One of my favorite live performances.
A Tom & Jerry Cartoon without Tom and Jerry
damn guy saying "whoah" at the end of the song 9:05 ... always pisses me off
Tiffany Poons Version is much better
True
This is such a great performance! My favorite on RUclips so far!
Jung Lin always picks the most wonderful music to play and this is why I look for her astonishingly beautiful performances!!! She makes music alive with her beautiful Heart!
She good but not better then Valentina's performance
Valentina lisitsa
SpeedDReactive listened to at least 10 other performances and they all differ. To me personally Valentina's performance is by far the best!
Valentina, knows when to slow down and cojoin the flow of these pieces better then anyone I've heard. Listen to Valentina's interpretation of campanella and you realize she a freaking pianist goddess...
SpeedDReactive Hey, still better than Lang Lang.
SpeedDReactive at least this pianist doesnt make up a new piece, because theres a point before cadenza when valentina goes so freacking fast that she cant even control what she is playing
WTF. damn you tube advertising.
seriously, any ad over 5 sec is a freaking sin.
now back to this,
great piano play....
Oh my gosh!
I can't even begin to imagine how much time she spent learning that song, and it was incredibly done!
i saw and first heard this song when i was six. it took me almost thirty years to figure out what song it was! it's so great that you commented on that!
Beautiful....Beautiful...Beautiful,,,Beautiful...Beautiful...Beautiful....i don't know how many more times i can say this...girl go straight to the top and don't look back!
A brilliant treatment of one of my very favorite pieces. Jung Lin is beautiful and talented, it seems.
Rarely can a lady like Ms. Jung Lin play by heart and soul this difficult piece of Lizt...awesome indeed. Congratulations and more power...may your tribe increase.
@Bret6464 Thank you for dealing with those who came here varied greatly in their mental level of acceptance!
You have an exquisite ear for music!!! It is a blessed experience to hear Jung Lin perform Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody no 2!
I can see her passion, grace, enthusiasm and exuberance in every note that you play
I am very amazed on how you played this piece and indeed this piece is no joke. Keep it up I salute you :)
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOREVER OMGGGGG
Jung Lin makes music live with her Heart!!! She is a composer as well and this is why she has an affinity with other composers!I wish to hear this beautiful performance live !!!
@Bret6464 Thank you very much! Jung Lin's transcription and performance of Sibelius' Nocturne is so poetic, tender and very beautiful!
This was fantastic! Thanks for sharing. She is great.
Wow. Am I glad I stumbled on this. Just unreal talent.
Best comment I've seen on this site: "Great pianists are musicians. They're artists who add to and interpret music. That's what makes Jung Lin the best. You want to hear someone play like a metronome, might as well listen to midi-file..... or Hamelin, Lisitsa, Wang, ad nauseum!!"
wowww...she play and u can see that she really feels every note...and thats why she play with the heart...
Whenever I hear the mellow sound of the piano next to my ear
I remember his warm smile, love music the piano
Everything about her is amazing! a totally beautiful mage who plays like a goddess! (: hard to believe there are dislikes, what kind of people do that, that's sick!
it's soo beautiful to see a different interpretion of the same piece and see how the musians can make it their own!
Who would push the dislike button? Are people nuts? This was incredible.
Absolutely A-Mazing!! My Grandpa played this by ear because of his talent. THis lady is also soooo talented!
the "filler" of the album btw is the wonderful Four Pieces Op. 119, the performance of the first of which has caused me to shed a tear. the mood Mr. Hamelin creates there, is one of philosophic acceptance of life's sadnesses and joys. not even the great sviatoslav richter whom i greatly admire had managed to do so (in my opinion) with this late Brahms work.
After listening to that album one cannot possibly claim that Marc-André Hamelin's jaw-dropping technique is all he can offer pianistically.
one of the best performances! splendid!
Never can get enough of her..
@Bret6464 Thank you very much! I love Jung Lin's beautiful transcription of the Sibelius nocturne! She is extraordinary !!!
The thunderous passage starting at 6:45 is powerful yet smooth, inspired and inspiring.
Wow this takes breath away... and it goes on and on... worth the ten minutes just playing softly
Tökéletes! Nekem ez tetszik a legjobban. Greetings from Hungary! ;)
Miss Lin was extremely fortunate to get this kind of exposure on the tv show. In the incredibly competitive concert pianist market this kind of publicity is gold. That not to take away from her breathtaking virtuosity. And by the way please click on my name to hear highlights from my own Piano Concerto No 2 in D minor. Thank you.
this is the best performance I have ever seen ... It looks like I must change my music idol ;))))))) congratulations to the pianist and thank you for publishing this video ...it's so inspiring
Best performance in my opinion. Thank you for sharing with us.
I am Hungarian and she is really beautiful and and a talent. Congratulations Jung (I hope this is your first name). Bravisssimo!
all i get from this is jellyness, epicness and the urge to play for days straight
she's just as beautiful as her art & talent
For a wonderful impromptu performance of this piece, look up "Gabriel Sanchez Liszt." He just played it for his students after a lesson and the parents video taped it and put it on youtube. A truly enjoyable performance!
This is the best performance ever, totally beautiful in all respects. Bravo !!!!!!!!!
Thanks Jung for sharing it with us
@erlcly02 This sublime performance was telecast live and cameraman with everybody there was overwhelmed with emotions ! I love this BREATHTAKING :-) performance!!!
Love that she doesn't rely on the pedal as a crutch to get through some of the trickier sections of the piece. It's a trap so many pianists (myself included) fall into when trying to tackle works of this magnitude.
And sweet Jesus, are her trills tight!
bravo...its the true emotion for the piano!..for the music!
how does she not mess it up? incredible!
her technique covers this piece; she doesn't pedal on purpose to create the sharp delivery that she did, and its absolutely great. some people are not open-minded enough to accept her version, unfortunately
Best piano & best execution I ever heard! Great pianist!
I love her performing, so much feeling and emotion, very beautifull ^_^
From Heaven straight to my computer !!!! Breathtaking performance dear Jung Lin !!!
The more I listen to this rendition, the more I like it. Just perfect.
I absolutely love Jung's musical phrasing in this recording. If I had to choose my favorite part, I would say the part after 0:00.
she can capture liszt intimacy of the unknown in her play. she plays frightened, but keeps pushing on.
BRAVO to Jung Lin for a virtuoso performance! There will be movies, paintings, educational videos and books dedicated to Jung Lin!
@MrAvian11 Your comment makes me very sad. My Mother and Grandmother were born and grew up in China. My Grandmother was fluent in Chinese, Japanese, French, English,German,Russian and other languages. She adored Chinese people as she knew them very well, their culture and language!!! I will take it as a compliment your saying that Jung Lin is an Asian !!! I am happy that I lived in Malaysia for a few years and my Daughter was born in Petaling Jaya and I have very fond memories !!!Open your heart
i hope i'm not repeating myself. this piece is great, even the piano is exceptional; no tinny sound in the high register. it's hard for even good pianos to get a rounded sound at the high end of the keyboard.
The best interpretation including all the master, congratulations Jung, you have brought this Liszt piece to life like no other.
One word: Breathtaking.
bloody hell she's amazing, and i can recognise loads of the parts
Jung Lin: will you marry me? I've been playing and teaching for some 25 years; and have never been blown away so much as this performance!
...Just increadable!
@89hedgehog People who have ears, eyes,Heart and Soul will be touched by Jung Lin's unsurpassed musicality!
Thank you, young Maestro!
@DominoFlare Whoa, please, calm down with the insults :( If you see my reply to lilytoka, you'll see some things I may have pointed out. Perhaps I'm over-analyzing it apparently, idk. It doesn't matter if I can do better, with practice and technique, I probably could, who knows?
Check out Cziffra's recording of this (not the live recording, but sound only) of Hungarian Rhapsody N. 2 to see what I mean.
You can't tell by watching the video, but I bet she's burning on her inside. There's no way you can play so well a piece like this without feeling it.
Actually no performance of any piece can be really flawless but rather performed extremely well like Jung Lin HG2, which is one of the best I agree. Were humans so we always make mistakes, were not perfect, nobody can claim that. But the fact that we can't play this flawlessly is because we don't know exactly how Liszt and people of his day performed it or how he intended it to sound. We only assume based on hearing it performed and if it sounds amazing, assume it's that's the way to play it.
I am surprised to hear there are people who don't adore Jung Lin. She's a gift from God !
@dship98 Ms. Lin likely chose not to add a cadenza. She's is also a composer whose orchestral works were performed by the Juilliard Symphony, while she was still in Juilliard. For piano, her transcription of the Sibelius Nocturne is unbelievably great, listen to it on you tube. Aside from Rachmaninov there aren't many who added their own cadenza to Liszt's second Hungarian Rhapsody. Cziffra didn't, you would expect it from Rach.
I jumped at the end.... no lie. I jumped out of my seat. That guy's "WOW!" scared the shit outta me.
Just starting learning the song...What a grand performance :D
The old Liszt to be proud of on this.
Greetengs from Hungary!
I thought Yuja Wangs Piano Concerto was amazing, you could see the immense pleasure and passion in her face.
Not just like but love, adore, and respect
Beautiful person + Beautiful playing!!
amazing! my ears are blessed.
I have just listened to Lin Jung and Maksim side by side, and no matter what I do she keeps outpacing him and finishes the piece almost 16 seconds faster. Her technique is impeccable and she relies on the instrument and her interpretation to do the talking. Maksim is much more a showman than Lin, and one can clearly see the camera focuses more on Maksim's face while Lin's incredible hands are the focus in this video. Both deliver the same music but with a remarkably different temperament.
BRAVISSIMA!!! After Jung Lin I can't listen to it from anyone else. Jung Lin owns "Hungarian Rhapsody no.2 ! For me Jung Lin plays this even better than Rachmaninoff whom I adore ! Everybody here consider yourself lucky that during our times we are blessed with the greatest Pianist living among us!!!
Why few jealous people here trying to poison with their criticism this magnificent performance and trying to create discord ?Jung Lin is a gift from God!!! Please, stop limiting yourself and open your hearts. I daily appreciate Jung Lin's performances and find them even better than Rachmaninoff's. ! I must admit that I love Rachmaninoff's interpretation too but Jung Lin owns Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody no 2. Please stop fighting as nobody comes even close to Jung Lin!!!
People that dont know how to play act like they know everything. Try to learn this and you know how to respect when someone is able to play this masterpiece
Simply gorgeous to listen to.
Прекрасно!!! Джунг Лин, я слушаю Вас каждый день! Спасибо Вам за замечательное исполнение! Jung Lin, you are truly the pinnacle of perfection !
Bret6464 , You have an exquisite ear for music !!! I love Jung Lin's playing ! My preferred pianists are Jung Lin, Rachmaninoff, Gilels, Horowitz, Moiseiwitsch, Weissenberg and Bozhanov !
I love her performing, so much feeling and emotion. Her Chopin and Rachmaninoff are also so very beautifull. :D
I love her performing, so very beautiful, full of emotion and feeling! Jung Lin and Horowitz are my favorite pianists :)
@DeepAbsentia Why to leave such negative comment for such magnificent performance?!
I hate to agree with those who criticise out of pure envy, but yes, it is like someone programmed her to play it. Admirable, technically speaking, because it is a freaking hard piece, but plain.
wow her memory is amazing
sehr beeidruckend wirklich unglaublich!
Because Jung Lin is 2 million times better XD
She makes people feel the Hungarian spirit in the piece! Rubato is the soul of the rhapsody, I love how she uses lots of rubato and doesn't keep a steady tempo. Though her phrasing is impeccable and her fast tempo gives it more emotion and passion. Hamelin plays restrained, more a technical pianist and his technique is really great, better than about all nowadays. But it takes even greater technique and musicianship to perform it like Jung :D
@Vesivian No hating here. I did watch Lang Lang's version a few weeks back. The guy can play--no doubt about that. And there are a few aspects of his performance that I really loved. For example, he is BANGING on those keys, and then in the span of ONE NOTE he starts this beautiful, soft legato. Brilliant. What control. But I think I like this urm....controlled version better. But we each have our own likes. It's all about interpretation; that is what makes it so beautiful!
The same respect should be given to all of us, the people who don't adore her or prefer her version. I didn't start a debate but your friend is intent on voicing his opinion and starting a debate with me and others on the forum, so maybe he should continue his debates on his own channel. And no I'm not continuing a debate ;)
Great! Everyone has their favorite of course. Mine is Cziffra (the timing, dynamic range and some surprises in accent).
