End of the year special! You love to see it! Ok, look. I really thought that 2023 was going to be my year, but in reality I've slowly been losing it every day. This is also on top of being busy with college work and having to find new ways to not disappoint my parents. We'll try again in 2024, hopefully I can get this channel back on its feet after seeing similar creators blow up recently. Something that made me feel like I was in a simulation after personally witnessing the cscoop water bottle drama was that dream & his friends also garnered the same type of audience/stans smplive did but amplified by 10000x then during their first vidcon they also had a water bottle incident, except this fan posted it themselves online with photo evidence of them stealing it. And the same time that happened another fan showed up to their conference wearing a gay nsfw fanart, caused a scene to make everyone look at it and then also posted pictures of them wearing it.
having lived through the cooper twitchcon water bottle confession, SMPronpa, wilburx”schlatt”, and the schlatt profile pic surge, i can saw without a doubt that the whole of the SMPLive fanbase was such a mess. Which really ruined it for the rest of us who were really only there for funny people chilling on mc live.
As someone who did not use twitter throughout the entirety of SMP live i must say the fanbase ruined jack shit for me, classic case of what you dont see you dont feel
What even is SMPronpa? I've been hearing alot about it recently and from all I can tell, it's just an SMPlive x Danganronpa fanfic, What's so notorious about it?
as a wilbur soot fan who's watched him since soothouse, i don't get why people have such a struggle respecting boundaries. how come i have never even thought of wilbur in a boundary breaking way for about 7 years and then some stans roll around and break boundaries? the world needs to be more accepting to be honest.
@@dakabaka4912 I mean I kinda still agree? I mean he's a 2/10 now but that's bc abusing people is VERY unattractive, but I still think the way people thirsted over him was weird as shit lmao
I think what grossed me out most about this fandom in general in how young they are and how so many other fandoms have desensitized them to these people being PEOPLE and not just character they can ship together. They turned mine crafters into sexualities, ignored boundaries over and over, and have even doxxed people who don’t like who they basically religiously praise. It’s scary knowing they’re going to become adults and make it so much worse…
It's wild because the average age in these communities is like 14 and they're already sexualizing people without their consent and even doxxing them. I like to think that the people who quit these communities realize that their behavior is fucked and make an effort to fix their lives
I agree, however note: they will grow up. do not judge children for the indiscretions they made during youth - adults are hardly perfect either, but they tend to have a few things worked out even if they complain about having nothing in order. myspace kids grew up (see: SSundee), Facebook kids grew up (most of the Minecraft RUclipsr crowd), rp forum kids grew up (see: Pippa), DeviantArt kids grew up, as did the last Twitter and Reddit generation and some kiwi farms people (KenshiVA), iFunny people have also grown up though they're still edgy and post on X now (probably Colaws, very very adult humor and cropped NSFW comedy + satire, be warned) I mention those examples because at one point I'm sure you could imagine them goofing off on the internet. I'm sure MatPat did this when he was derping around on the internet and cutting videos and Vinesauce Joel did this as a kid in Habbo Hotel there will be controversies, many justified, many not, and the situation will rise and ebb again and again: nobody, me included, can possibly predict the future with 100% accuracy
It's this wild sense of entitlement that the internet and specifically stans have that makes this so infuriating. They have absolutely no right to say, take, or do any of these things they repeatedly do and refuse to hold accountability when they are directly called out for it. It's a dangerous mentality that genuinely destroys fandoms, and it kinda sucks lol. This was one of my favorite communities for a long time, and I clicked this video as soon as I saw it because I remembered that fucking water bottle. A+ video, definitely gonna be a fan of your future content
Never liked Stan culture and I never will. At the end of the day, most people are normal people living normal lives like you and I (other than the obvious fact that these guys have a large amount of eyes on them). They breathe the same air, eat the same food, play the same games and so on. Someone like Carson isn’t going to say “excuse me butler, fetch me your finest devilled pheasant”. I’ve seen him in videos eating fast food like 99% of other people. Influencers are NOT royalties, treat them as they would treat you.
16:38 Schlatt actually faired better tbh, he still is popular today and he's pretty much in the process of "trying to find a good series to milk on before moving on again" of sorts
Its crazy that 99% of internet drama surrounding creators wouldn't exist if they didn't have a twitter. Its such a shitty platform that breeds nothing but misinformed opinions, anger, and hate. With constant news from the entire world 24/7, it makes everyone on the platform to afraid to say "Idk" or "I dont have an opinion on it, or know what it is" and then they defend that opinion till the day they die.
@@KyotoCommentates it was still probably inevitable though also this is really high quality content for such a small creator i'm not an expert on this but from what i can tell you have potential
Cant wait to hear your thoughts/get a history lesson on the death of Lunch Club. Ive always been fascinated by that tale, and im also curious where Carson stands today
carson has lost a majority of his fanbase. i still watch his newer videos, but it stings. he records his videos with his non-lunch club friends and i can safely say that people who still watch him (including me) has not forgotten what he did.
@@Swifty_Joe tbh among all the sorts of allegations that have been thrown at youtubers I think Carson's were some of the least terrible. was there an abuse of power of some sort? yeah, sure, and that's shitty, i'll fully admit that. but what people fixated on was "Carson sexted a minor!" when Romeo and Juliet laws applied and there was only a 2 year age gap. (hell, my parents are two years apart!) the real problem here was the power dynamic. it's the same sort of thing as fans hooking up with rockstars - it's not a fair even relationship and the fan can totally be taken advantage of by the star being in a position of power. but even still Carson clearly felt remorse from his actions, took time to improve himself as a person, and did that whole year of donating stream proceeds to charity. i can see why some of his old friends and fans choose to not associate with him anymore, but I don't think he deserves to have his legacy forever tarnished by that. 17 and 19 isn't pedophilia. i don't think what he did is some unforgivable crime. tl;dr carson fucked up but i dont think that makes him an absolutely irredeemable monster. other youtubers have absolutely done much worse
@@exoplanetarydev but you have to keep in mind that we, the viewers dont know the full story. all of carson's closest friends left him immediately when they found out, they tried giving him a chance but they realized he didn't progress so they decided to break their friendship
This is why I loved SMPlive and the guys behind it, I’m not a stan and these guys were real and decided to call these freaks out. I kinda fell off with Dream and friends because I’d see stans with barely any effort made to call them out to the point where they just took over the community. Dream and his friends care more about not stepping on stans toes than making their community and enjoyable place. I miss SMPlive days and I hope every creator today is doing well.
Fandom culture is just so fucking wild even though I’m in it. Every single fandom has its bad apples but any stan of real people is just…a whole new type of crazy.
These "stans" do not care about the person they are worshipping, they'll always find a way to hate on them. If you made a dark and edgy joke a year ago, guess what? They'll use that against you even if that was a joke a.k.a. what happened to dream. But if the same thing happens to them, they'll find a way to make themselves look like a victim. Never apologize to these sick people, they don't care about the creators and never will. They take everything out of context.
I've gotten back into watching Cooper recently, and it's really nice to see him and some others from the SMPLive era still hanging out and making videos. He always had some of my favorite humor out of that group, so I'm glad there's much less stan garbage in his corner of the ring nowadays, makes the whole experience a lot less stressful and less subject to falling apart.
Odd ending… nobody wants to affiliate with each other? One look into what Ted and Schlatt are doing and you’ll see that they still have a podcast together. Charlie was a part of it originally and only left because he’s doing Just Roll With It; he still visits the podcast and comes on as a guest occasionally.
@@KyotoCommentatesthey just move on to different things like how Pewdiepie’s old friend group no longer plays with each other. Emma Blackery doesnt play with Jacksepticeye anymore and Ken doesn’t collab with Markiplier. Correlation doesnt equal causation, dude
@@macwarrenconnor Those cases are friend groups growing out of each other and moving on amicably. Lunch Club was destroyed due to multiple people in the group backstabbing each other and it basically created these "factions" that almost never communicate
@@KyotoCommentates that wasn’t the claim though. If you meant “chuckle sandwich and cscoops friend groups don’t interact anymore” then that’s what should’ve been said
@@nicolem4110 In the script I specifically mention these groups: 1. Stans that migrated to the former Dream SMP community 2. Stans that chose to quit Twitter 3. CallMeCarson's community 4. Other communities affected by Carson (which implicitly includes Chuckle Sandwich and Cscoop's friend group) Could I have made what happened with Chuckle Sandwich and Cscoop's friend group more clear? Sure, but I didn't want to derail the pacing of the video with a detailed breakdown of these groups, especially since almost everyone else understood my point without question. Sorry for the confusion
This is the first RUclips video I’m watching in 2024 and I have yet to skip around and have sat to watch the full thing and I was not disappointed. Also…every time I say I’m a fan of something with a horrid fandom and/or amount of stans I always quickly say “I like the content I’m not crazy” bc Stan’s hav legit ruined so many fandoms
i remember watching smplive religiously and wishing that i could get onto the smp. im still upset how it all ended w the fandom. i loved these people so much that cscoop was the whole reason why i got into skateboarding and this whole smp being the reason i still do art to this day.
It feels weird to watch this video after witnessing like, all of this happen in real time over the pandemic, like I was in a three year long friendship with a group of people I'd met in Cooper's discord server, and we would talk about stuff whenever it happened. I remember one of those people were mutuals with the kid who was going back through Cooper's old tweets, and how it caused some other people to as a joke go through other streamers old tweets, and then there was a whole thing where streamers were just telling people the stop and to not do that. I remember also how crazy it was to just doomscroll on twitter while everyone was doing stuff, and then talk about in live time about the inktea and arlus finch allegations, inktea hit a little weird though because I'd been in his and Tanner's server for like a month before it happened. I'd played Minecraft in call with the guy and one of the server mods before, and I think now that I'd been getting into that little parasocial mindset at that point, and I real time had seen how the server reacted, and how a community even was destroying the Minecraft server for the community afterwards as like an event type thing (I hadn't really kept up with Tanner after that, like barely saw him around until he popped up with Grunk in the groupchat videos, and that was crazy to see). Idk there was so much that happened on the sides that's just engraved in my brain now that's like unimportant history that I can info dump at any given time now. The internet is crazy, stay safe out there, your favorite RUclipsrs aren't your best friends, parasocial relationships are dangerous etc etc. I feel like it's also wild that this is the first video I've ever seen documenting the twitter drama surrounding smptwt
Also I'd been in a Discord server for artists in the community for a chunk of time, and it was so freakish and toxic in there, there was like five people who were so obsessed with crumb they started acting like cultish about "protecting her" meanwhile they were just a group of assholes that would brag about being her friends. Like brother you're a 20 year old man in Brazil, I do not think it's a flex to vaguely be online friends with a 15 year old just because they have 50k on twitter, calm down. Wuna even got involved in that server, and had more than once sat there for hours arguing with one of the people from the Cscoop server friend group, it was never that serious, and the way he was acting in that server has me like clicking off of Pokay videos with him in them even now. Like brother this was strange, don't join your fans' personal discord servers and argue with people for them, the owner of that server was huge on stan culture and just, ew
The Arlus Finch thing was wild because literal days before the victims came forward he had played monopoply with Wilbur Soot, Nihachu, and JustaMinx, all thee of whom would completely blow up over the following year. If things had gone slightly differently Arlus Finch would be a frequent mention in videos about Minecraft Predators instead of being a footnote when discussing jschlatt
Banger video! I was lurking behind the scenes in a lot of these fandoms, and had my fair share of hyperfixations. This is the importance of having access to healthy coping mechanisms and therapy. I was able to manage my hyperfixations, and as a result was able to enjoy these eras to the fullest without letting them impact those around me, aswell as my personal/social life. I still watch some of these ccs to this day 👍 good times
This is really well made, and I enjoyed every second of it! I'm glad you didn't justify what the stans did even after Carson was outted for grooming someone (maybe more? I don't remember too well, when I saw the news about it I was too crushed to even read up on what had happened) the pacing was amazing, I'm even glad I got to see some mentions of Traves and I still miss him Well made video, I hope you get more recognition.
Carson never actually groomed anyone, but people just jumped on the hate bandwagon because he(19 at the time) was talking to a 17 year old girl, and also behind the scenes he was becoming unlikable by his friends, he realized this and took a year off of social media and has moved on ever since
It wasn't grooming per se, it was a 2 year age gap in which he abused his power as a famous male over a younger age, normal woman. It was a relationship in which he had leverage and he definitely took advantage of that, which is still bad. He just didn't groom her, because they're only two years apart in age. I watch his videos sometimes and then I feel guilty knowing what he did, but he does donate a lot to charity and it seems like he's gotten better mentally after that. I just hope the girl is ok.
@@CrimsonFire01 Carson was still abusive to many many people which was the big problem so he was never innocent as people like to claim rather the actually sh*tty things he did got overshadowed by the whole p*do accusations, which never had any weight to begin with but because Twitter is stupid it’s all anyone ever remembers, so it’s still worth remembering that he is a bad person who willingly manipulated the people around him for his own benefit and even threw others under the bus for sympathy points.
@@bradenmoore2187are you- do- WHAT?! Thats the literal definition of grooming. I do a health and social care course, we’ve gone over this a million times. If anyone uses their ‘power’ or whatever to their advantage- then thats grooming. It doesn’t matter what the age difference is, anyone and any age gap can still be grooming. A 20 year old could groom a 90 year old. Its still grooming by every sense.
I actually didn't know prior to this video that "Stan" was short for "Stalker-Fan" Prior to this I legit thought there was a Large Group of People Named "Stan" and They all came together to have fun or something idk
That last statement about jchlatt I wouldnt say he hates his current career but i wouldnt be surprised if he just dropped off the face of the internet one day if given the chance
That might be how he goes out since he's already abandoned multiple channels and quit streaming twice. He could just slowly fizzle out everything with no formal statement if he wanted to
He said that he couldn't see himself doing anything other than making content in a podcast so I doubt he'll stop anytime soon. Will probably just keep trying new stuff out for a while.
This whole era made me see the writing on the wall with Dream's stans. Dream didn't denounce these people like a lot of Live SMP members did. The false grooming allegations and stan over criticality of minor issues (no pun intended) all partially stemmed from stans. Dream should have taken the warning when Jawsh called Stan Culture a beast on Twitter.
I think dream probably should’ve immediately shut the stand down, though they have died down a bit, but the allegations seemed to be from both Stans and Antis. Anastasia and Amanda were probably Stans that couldn’t handle dream not caring about them, but Sam, Nat, and Burner22 all most definitely hated dream. Thankfully Nat and Sam seem to have changed, but both stans and antis are to blame for the allegations. #FuckNicholasCantu
The whole post-2019 Minecraft e-celeb scene is a perfect mix of undeserved fame, the e-drama economy's rapid growth and why you shouldn't let your kids online
it's actually more weird and creepy that it's a water bottle. Like you'd expect an obsessed person to steal like, some clothing or something like that, but that's just a fuсking bottle
the serious stream (carson's stream after the smpconfessions tweet) was a cultural moment for me as a resident on smptwt i never thought i'd see a video essay made abt this one niche lmao. the fights between normal smptwt and nsfw smptwt were insane the whole place was just so toxic😭
The fact fanfics are normal about real people is so insane to me. I could understand if it was the characters they play in their smp bc its basically a tv show with rhem as voice actors. However fanfics shipping real life people or killing them or even just living a normal life is weird. The fanbase is filled with obsessed kids who feed off eachother. No parental guidance is there. It freaks me out that these kids may grow up not knowing its wrong and genuinely be stalkerish towards their crushes and think its normal. Oh not to meantion how they turn to an obsessive hate instead of love so quick. That mixed with no sense of boundaries is potentially dangerous
I find it dumb that when people talk about Stans in the mc community they mostly blame it on Dream stans but it’s not all Dream Stan’s there are more mc communities that have stans too. Like the Qsmp community already have a big stan community due too different language audiences as I fear this shit could implode.
Yikes didn’t know all this drama was happening while this smp was going on. I’m sometimes glad that I stayed away from most online communities as a kid because of the drama and unhealthy bonds all this becomes.
As sad as it is, in 5 years Cscoop, Schlatt, and Carson I can’t expect them to keep making vids, Cooper may stop making vids at some point soon, followed by Schlatt falling out of the passion of content creation, and oddly enough Carson might be the last one left, Carson may slowly dwindle in his channel, Schlatt may be the wealthiest of the 3 when it’s all done, I think Cscoop will be the happiest tho, on the other hand, I think Ted Nivison and SlimeCicle may have some better years ahead of them, but this is all a prediction
Carson should have just dipped You don't abuse your power to get nudes from underage fans repeatedly then come back pretending "growing" as a person makes things any better
Ngl bro the Stan culture in the MC community is too much they are every where as I can’t deal with it. Like I was watching a Badboyhalo stream where he was talking about Dream and all the Qsmp Stan’s where harassing him for it and also for defending Dream like bro. And then i saw a Qstan telling quackity on Twitter to not associate with certain people like bro wtf u ain’t his parents.
whats even more wild is that the water bottle tweet is a copypasta from kpop twt, no one stole cooper's waterbottle, it was just a "joke" tweet that got taken seriously and lead to the downfall of the smplive fandom
What I think happened is that a weird coincidence took place where Cooper actually lose a water bottle at TwitchCon 2019, and that the copypasta was taken as an admission of guilt since it aligned with other stan behavior during that time
It's sad, I used to enjoy MC creators before stan culture went wild with the community. I remember my spouse and I watching Wilbur's videos back then, Techno, etc. and I even watched Dream once or twice. Once it all went to shit I stopped interacting with MC content and the community all together. It's too far gone for me to ever really enjoy it again.
Great video! Even though I knew about most of this stuff beforehand, it was still pretty interesting and gave me more context for stuff that I wasn't aware about. I was going to make my own video on the aftermath of "SMPLive" a few years back, and a big part of it was going to be on the stans and how, for as negative as stans ultimately were on the community, still had a huge effect on the Minecraft community. Also agree with the ending of the video. The only person who (imo) ended up succeeding was Cscoop, as he has revived his channel with videos he actually enjoys making. Carson lost all his friends and connections, Traves and Noah straight up quit, and Ted, Slime, and (especially) Schlatt all transitioned into less interesting content then what they were making before.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I personally think that Ted and Schlatt both occasionally drop really good videos, but Ted has been putting more focus into Chuckle Sandwich and Schlatt has been stretched thin between several channels and likely things behind the scenes that aren't public. It would be nice if less of Schlatt's uploads were reaction videos. As much as I disagree with how he handled certain things or spoke about certain people, seeing Noah quit was sad because he was the only one who spoke extensively about what went on behind the scenes and often had insightful things to say. Finding out that this friend group had actually collapsed when everyone was under the impression that they were still on good terms was such a huge rug pull to me, and three years later we still don't have all of the puzzle pieces
At this point given literal decades of examples and evidence, anyone who makes it big out there or even just on youtube should know these kinds of fans are inevitable who will obsess over you, want to "claim" you for themselves and will want to ruin you/destroy you or even worse if they don't get their way because they legit believe they "own" you and must always get what they want no matter what you desire otherwise. And nothing is more dangerous than even just one of these "fans" deciding it's worth destroying your life or even body, no matter the cost for them, because they treat you like a toy or pet THEY own. And they always are the ones that get heard the most by being the loudest, to ruin your reputation by making it look like they are the majority of your fanbase instead of a tiny minority. Or to tl;dr this, the movie Misery was more ahead of its time than anyone ever wants to admit, and showed how ugly Stan culture can truly become and how dangerous it always has been for creators/authors since the start.
I love this video. Actually sitting through smp live from beginning to end was so much fun while it lasted. Im glad that during the split i had enough sense to side with people like Jawsh and Cooper with the idea that stans are insane. The smps that came after never stuck, especially seeing how new people reacted with the og smp live members (best example is tommy and cscoop in smp earth) Im still an avid cscoop fan and support his patreon. The moral of all of this is that twitter sucks and you shouldnt use it
Carson was accused of grooming someone who was 17 when he was 19, if he wasn’t CallMeCarson, no one would have bat a eye. But to be real, Carson dodged a bullet with this one. Now he’s a small creator having fun again like he used to be.
i used to love smplive and its creators but dear god it was such a mess........ the smpronpa au drama, the water bottle incident, schlattbur shippers, the lunch club breakup............. u really had to be there
I really liked SMPLive when it was going but I just stayed on RUclips to watch highlights, so I had no idea about what was going on down at the darkest pits of hell on twitter. Stan culture is nothing new but this server felt like the first to bring that kind of thing into Minecraft and unfortunately wasn't just groundbreaking at reviving smp content. Despite all of this, I will always look back at 2019 and SMPLive more specifically as the second golden age of the internet. It was such a fever dream having been there since the beginning but it was also great.
i was in the smplive fanbase throughout its entire existence, and as an ex self proclaimed ‘stan’, even I knew that the fanbase was awful. I even participated in boundary breaking behaviors because so many people would ENCOURAGE it. once I saw how awful my behavior was, I immediately stopped because I was a NORMAL PERSON. I genuinely don’t understand why people did everything in their power to make these poor creator’s lives a living hell when all they did was try to provide people with content.
As a Tumblr user, I just wanted to clarify two things. First, it is not all stan culture, and second, the adult content ban was NOT well needed. Many creators on the platform who used it for stuff like nsfw art and other similar content creation got shut out, and a lot of people made a living off of it (commisions, etc.) So when they got effectively banned off of the platform that got them paid, the had to work their following back up from scratch. Adult content is allowed on tumblr again now, although a lot of these creators did not return because of trust issues with the platform and the inability to regain their following they once had. Oh, and before anyone pulls the "Oh, well it was nsfw so they deserved it" card or smth stupid like that, there is NOTHING WRONG with making art that's nsfw (as long as it is still legal and all that but that's beside the point here). If you don't like it, just. Don't look at it. Don't say someone deserved having their main source of income shut off because you didn't like their art. That's just selfish and a horrible way to act.
@@KyotoCommentates Oh ye that was def a problem. If im being honest idk how much of a problem because I haven't started using tumblr until within the past year or so, but that sounds like it would not be a good thing to have in any community (sorry if this is worded weird im tired and the words aren't wording rn lol). It's just the wording in the vid made the meaning a little hazy and i wanted to make sure it was clarified.
@@KyotoCommentates Those didn't exist on tumblr though? I think you're confusing it for Twitter, which has always had "cheeze pizza problems," and those problems got worse with EM in power. The problem Tumblr was having was BOTS that would either spam explicit content unmarked and without credit, or would spam messages to people. These bots never got fully eradicated, so the problem still exists despite corpos fucking over artists and sex workers.
@@Firerise9402 The thing is, that problem basically didn't exist on Tumblr. The corpos can spew whatever excuses they want, but those of us who were around at the time know that the problem was always bot spam, which didn't get solved by banning explicit content. Also, they didn't exactly allow explicit content back on the platform, they just stopped nuking accounts for posting it - it still gets HARDCORE SUPPRESSED in the algorithm, which is functionally the same thing as a full ban because the end result is still that artists and sex workers don't get any discovery. There's also the Great Tag Ban of 2022, which also made it harder to find explicit content such as artists that are already well known, and the Great Tag Ban also made it harder to find political information, as well as news, which is a huge deal as a lot of people use Tumblr for that specifically. Also, they banned the tag "#girl"
@@SnoFitzroy Holy frick I completely missed the tag ban thats um. A lot. And ye you got everything else precisely right thanks for correcting me on what i got wrong.
Great video, if anything has the topic of “Stans” then I’ll automatically despise them and you did it perfectly with them. A bit of advice I have is maybe show your personality more (like some jokes and such) I felt I just watched this video for the topic, rather than yourself. Personality is a big part of videos so maybe work on that more, idk though just advice.
parents allowing their kids to end up as stans is borderline child neglect at this point, or they're just as bad as the kid no good parent would let their child become one of those deranged creatures
Cooper joko traves slimecicle fitmc and maybe Ted and maybe Connor seem like the only people from SMP live doing ok rn, Carson’s kinda making a comeback but he’ll never be redeemed in the eyes of the internet, Schlatt seems kinda disingenuous or unhappy with his career, junky’s straight up insane, Wilbur’s fanbase sucks, and the rest of them just kinda fell off
The greatest event out of all of this was when Schlatt scraped and purged all minecraft stans from on the ENTIRE TWITCH PLATFORM and banned them ALL. it was a glorious moment
This was a pretty well put together video. It definitely took me away from whatever I was working on before. Had me entranced. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Carson grooming scandal.
We need to stop adding "not all stans are weird", when they explicitly are. That is why they are stans, because they take their interest in a person too far. All stans are weirdos, if not, they are just fans.
There was no one who had more of a right opinion other than Its_Jawsh when he called out all of the Dream stan stuff over Twitter. A vast majority of SMPLive and Lunch Club happened while I was in highschool and still has influenced the creators I watch today. Still waiting for that clip dump of Schlatt's business proposal stream since I missed it while I was hanging out with friends.
i remember i had a highlights page on instagram for their streams (crazy moment in my life actually, neither here nor there) and i got the BIGGEST amount of hate after this … i wasn’t a stan page i literally just posted 30s clips from the streams lol
@KyotoCommentates i didnt realise he talked about it afterwards too 💀 it really was like they were trapped if they wanted to speak on anything of the matter and it created such a divide between the groups like u mentioned at the end
i'm sorry much needed ban? it was one of the few sites to properly tag nsfw content and frankly kept the weirdo culture isolated to the site, with the one thing which made it tolerable gone... everywhere else became even more of a cesspool. impressive noting twitter and reddit were already mocked and discord already had it's poor reputation with "mods little kittens"
Great Video Dude, but one tip/criticism: If you show Tweets or other types of text, make sure to leave them in the video long enough so people can actually read them. Its incredibly frustrating to start reading and immediately getting hit with a cut to the next segment…
I'm going to comment as someone who has severe ADHD and regularly hyperfixates to the point that it somewhat interferes with my day-to-day life. While the majority of my hyperfixations tend to be on fictional things and not real people, sometimes there are outliers. For example, I had an extremely long hyperfixation on American history a couple months ago. I did have a short hyperfixation on Tommyinnit during the earlier stages of covid. I am not stating this so you can make fun of me. For reference. this means I watched his streams and engaged in the fandom and thought about him and his character in the dsmp WAY too much. Despite all of that I was still able to understand he was a real person and the boundaries were different then with fictional characters and topics. I'm lesbian, which probably helped with any possibility of romantic/sexual feelings not existing; something I think absolutely crosses the line in parasocial relationships. I understand the need for companionship, and that parasocial relationships can help fill that need for many people, but there is a clear line. Even at the extent of my obsessions, I've always been able to respect certain boundaries. Maybe part of that was that I was too busy consuming content to bother with digging through the guy's Twitter. Still, I sincerely believe that the kind of extreme STAN culture described in the video is not linked to ADHD and possibly autism(though I will not speak for something I don't have). Despite having intrusive thoughts like any other person, I do not recall any urges to obtain personal belongings or rain hate on a creator. I watched angsty character animatics instead. But this also may only be possible because I understand some of the key features of parasocial relationships, that to the creator I am one in a number. They don't owe me anything personal, and I should not ask or take beyond what they have shown they are willing to give. If they say they are cool with non-shipping fanfiction then I can now go read it. I am not entitled to anything beyond being able to watch the content they put out. Maybe part of understanding this as a teenager is that I have a job. For plenty of content creators it is a job, and despite maybe being one they enjoy there are the same stipulations I have at my job. When someone makes weird comments about me at my work its creepy(its creepy outside of work too but during work I just kinda have to smile and take it soooooo) and when someone tweets that they stole a content creators water bottle its alsoooo very creepy. Like having a hyperfixation does not make you behave inappropriately, it's your own choice. Because while I find even having those kind of thoughts a little bit weird, people can't really control their thoughts, they can decide not to put them out on social media though!
As someone who is diagnosed with Autism, I know first hand the difference between hyperfixation and obsessive/stalking behavior. Thanks for commenting, what you said was really insightful
Hey with the nword stuff i kinda agree with the stans on that one as a onlookers. I think coppers apology was sincere but with him laughing while doing it makes me wish he made a tweet apologizing. Tbf he was streaming so i get laughing but still. And i do wish jschlatt atleast did apologize for his use of it. But that was years ago in both cases and they have changed since then but at the time I would have liked it if they both made one serious statement to apologize. But to reiterate its been years and I'm not upset at them since one its been years and two im only finding out about this stuff now anyway.
As a black guy, that shit was years ago, so who cares. The only time I’d demand an apology for the use of a word with negative connotations to my people are if it happened recently. Could care less about Schlatt addressing it and apologizing because it was years ago. A completely different time period where the internet was rampant with edginess, so I never fault a single creator past 2018 who used any slurs because it was just the norm back then. Stop holding old words accountable if it was normal back then, because none of these content creators knew any better.
@@illusioncat556 Hey I'm not holding anyone accountable for that at all. I said that was years ago I don't expect anyone to now years later apologize for such drama since as I said they changed as people and at this point everyone forgot. If you reread my post you'll see I'm not mad at anyone not trying to cancel anyone and only upset that at the time Coopers apology wasn't great and jschlatt never apologize. I want to say once again I don't since you kinda missed my point. At the time yeah I wish they both handled their conservancy(I hate auto correct) better but I do not think they should be held accountable all these years later. I agree more with the stans on those two instances. And I agree that it was a different Era where things not acceptable now was back then and labeled edgy humor. I do wish at the time they apologized seriously.
Some people when nervous.. LAUGH. Because they have never learned a better way to deal with it. The stans should never be sided with because their goal was to cancel them, rather than ‘hold them accountable.’
I remember when this went down, the stans were genuinely insane. I remember Ruby and Felix. Felix in particular was a horrific account, drove me fucking nuts.
I mentioned those two in particular because of how they wound up taking completely different paths. From what I can tell Ruby seems to have mellowed out and moved on, but Felix is still active in multiple communities and is hanging on by a thread IRL. "Nicole" mysteriously deactivated a while ago, I like to think that she's moved away from stan Twitter as well
i'd say i myself am regarded as a "stan" because im a pretty intense fan and i have autism, which means when i say intense, i mean i retain and could list off everything about some celebrities or streamers i like. trust me, as someone whos been called a stan, not all people who get dubbed stans are totally insane at a stalker level, and even we the more intense or knowledgeable fans are disgusted by the weirdos and stalkers of fandom spheres.
What..? A stan is a stalker fan. Thats the literal definition. You are a fan. Being hyperfixated and stalkerish are two different things. All stans are bad an obsessive.
im saying that people call anyone whos a fan a stan and that its unfair, and we need to keep in mind that actual stans exist and it means stalker. @@ShadowIsABaby

MF DOOM INSTRUMENTAL
Something that made me feel like I was in a simulation after personally witnessing the cscoop water bottle drama was that dream & his friends also garnered the same type of audience/stans smplive did but amplified by 10000x then during their first vidcon they also had a water bottle incident, except this fan posted it themselves online with photo evidence of them stealing it. And the same time that happened another fan showed up to their conference wearing a gay nsfw fanart, caused a scene to make everyone look at it and then also posted pictures of them wearing it.
@@yurnotcerti Wild how history repeated itself
having lived through the cooper twitchcon water bottle confession, SMPronpa, wilburx”schlatt”, and the schlatt profile pic surge, i can saw without a doubt that the whole of the SMPLive fanbase was such a mess.
Which really ruined it for the rest of us who were really only there for funny people chilling on mc live.
same, still loved SMPlive

smpronpa was genuinely an insane time to be alive man, i remember after carsons serious stream the op got bullied off the internet💀
I loved smplive sm, and i think now, compared to when i was an smpronpa fan, i can see why it stirred up so much attention. Shi was crazy
as a wilbur soot fan who's watched him since soothouse, i don't get why people have such a struggle respecting boundaries. how come i have never even thought of wilbur in a boundary breaking way for about 7 years and then some stans roll around and break boundaries? the world needs to be more accepting to be honest.

@@dakabaka4912 fair enough, but I def stand by what I meant about the people who like worshipped him? Strange people, everyone I'm talking about
I think what grossed me out most about this fandom in general in how young they are and how so many other fandoms have desensitized them to these people being PEOPLE and not just character they can ship together.
I agree, however note:
they will grow up. do not judge children for the indiscretions they made during youth - adults are hardly perfect either, but they tend to have a few things worked out even if they complain about having nothing in order.
myspace kids grew up (see: SSundee), Facebook kids grew up (most of the Minecraft RUclipsr crowd), rp forum kids grew up (see: Pippa), DeviantArt kids grew up, as did the last Twitter and Reddit generation and some kiwi farms people (KenshiVA), iFunny people have also grown up though they're still edgy and post on X now (probably Colaws, very very adult humor and cropped NSFW comedy + satire, be warned)
I mention those examples because at one point I'm sure you could imagine them goofing off on the internet. I'm sure MatPat did this when he was derping around on the internet and cutting videos and Vinesauce Joel did this as a kid in Habbo Hotel
there will be controversies, many justified, many not, and the situation will rise and ebb again and again: nobody, me included, can possibly predict the future with 100% accuracy
Instead Carson asks minors for nudes
on the other hand, I believe carson WOULD say that for a bri'ish bit
16:38 Schlatt actually faired better tbh, he still is popular today and he's pretty much in the process of "trying to find a good series to milk on before moving on again" of sorts
Its crazy that 99% of internet drama surrounding creators wouldn't exist if they didn't have a twitter. Its such a shitty platform that breeds nothing but misinformed opinions, anger, and hate. With constant news from the entire world 24/7, it makes everyone on the platform to afraid to say "Idk" or "I dont have an opinion on it, or know what it is" and then they defend that opinion till the day they die.
PewDiePie basically won when he decided to leave Twitter, the people that try to cancel him today aren't taken seriously by anyone lol
The only social media platform you can exist on safely is Digg
The fact that this type of internet culture escalated because of a tweet about a fucking water bottle sends chills down my spine...

Same. Honestly I lOVED Lunch Club. A lot. I just thought it was so funny and silly and fun. I still watch everyone bar Carson
carson has lost a majority of his fanbase. i still watch his newer videos, but it stings. he records his videos with his non-lunch club friends and i can safely say that people who still watch him (including me) has not forgotten what he did.
(hell, my parents are two years apart!)
the real problem here was the power dynamic. it's the same sort of thing as fans hooking up with rockstars - it's not a fair even relationship and the fan can totally be taken advantage of by the star being in a position of power. but even still Carson clearly felt remorse from his actions, took time to improve himself as a person, and did that whole year of donating stream proceeds to charity.
i can see why some of his old friends and fans choose to not associate with him anymore, but I don't think he deserves to have his legacy forever tarnished by that. 17 and 19 isn't pedophilia. i don't think what he did is some unforgivable crime.

Every single fandom has its bad apples but any stan of real people is just…a whole new type of crazy.
it's beyond crazy
These "stans" do not care about the person they are worshipping, they'll always find a way to hate on them. If you made a dark and edgy joke a year ago, guess what? They'll use that against you even if that was a joke a.k.a. what happened to dream. But if the same thing happens to them, they'll find a way to make themselves look like a victim. Never apologize to these sick people, they don't care about the creators and never will. They take everything out of context.
Even Wilbur got recently cancelled for the Palestine kind of joke that he made years ago I think
bro, dream is a p3do. he isn't being cancelled because he made a joke. it's because he's a groomer.

I've gotten back into watching Cooper recently, and it's really nice to see him and some others from the SMPLive era still hanging out and making videos. He always had some of my favorite humor out of that group, so I'm glad there's much less stan garbage in his corner of the ring nowadays, makes the whole experience a lot less stressful and less subject to falling apart.

you shouldve made the title "how one water bottle destroyed an entire fandom" lol, anyways cool video
That was actually the original title when I was writing the script for this video, I changed it to “one tweet” to see how it would do in the algorithm
I don't remember too well, when I saw the news about it I was too crushed to even read up on what had happened)
the pacing was amazing, I'm even glad I got to see some mentions of Traves and I still miss him
Well made video, I hope you get more recognition.
In schlatts video he points out Carson was doing this repeatedly not just once
@@bradenmoore2187are you- do- WHAT?! Thats the literal definition of grooming. I do a health and social care course, we’ve gone over this a million times.
What does dream have to do with this video?
I think dream probably should’ve immediately shut the stand down, though they have died down a bit, but the allegations seemed to be from both Stans and Antis. Anastasia and Amanda were probably Stans that couldn’t handle dream not caring about them, but Sam, Nat, and Burner22 all most definitely hated dream.
I find it dumb that when people talk about Stans in the mc community they mostly blame it on Dream stans but it’s not all Dream Stan’s there are more mc communities that have stans too. Like the Qsmp community already have a big stan community due too different language audiences as I fear this shit could implode.

What I think happened is that a weird coincidence took place where Cooper actually lose a water bottle at TwitchCon 2019, and that the copypasta was taken as an admission of guilt since it aligned with other stan behavior during that time

Finding out that this friend group had actually collapsed when everyone was under the impression that they were still on good terms was such a huge rug pull to me, and three years later we still don't have all of the puzzle pieces
living through this was such a time. i just remember waking up each day to see something so unhinged on twitter almost everyday it was so exhausting 😭
it's quite confusing for me that these stans actually hate the person that they idolize other than love them
Its wierd that this documentary does not go viral

Happy New year then 🎉@@KyotoCommentates
Or to tl;dr this, the movie Misery was more ahead of its time than anyone ever wants to admit, and showed how ugly Stan culture can truly become and how dangerous it always has been for creators/authors since the start.
lol i was somewhat in the fandom at that time but not on twitter so when i saw carson’s serious stream that night i was really confused
PS2 startup sound for the intro just factory reset my brain, good video
Now he’s a small creator having fun again like he used to be.
i used to love smplive and its creators but dear god it was such a mess........ the smpronpa au drama, the water bottle incident, schlattbur shippers, the lunch club breakup............. u really had to be there
MF DOOM instrumental
Yeah obviously artists getting screwed over was bad, I was more referring to the CP circles that had become infamous by that point
Watching this unfold live back in 2019 was crazy 😭
nah this isnt sitting right with me, that dude straight up said the n word twice on live, who cares if he was singing thats kind of even worse 😭
parents allowing their kids to end up as stans is borderline child neglect at this point, or they're just as bad as the kid
no good parent would let their child become one of those deranged creatures
Real fans know that it was beefstew who submitted the ask as a joke. Per some random joko or pokay video from like a year back
Interesting development if true. I knew about the rumors of it being a K-pop copypasta but if beef was the one behind it then that seals the deal
When I call myself a stan, it is always hyperbole. If someone called me a stan, I’d consider it an insult
Let's be real, highcraft is fire we love cooper
Yeah those are an awesome watch every time he uploads one
I wasn't expecting the ps2 startup noise, but goddamn the nostalgia injection was worth it.
i remember i had a highlights page on instagram for their streams (crazy moment in my life actually, neither here nor there) and i got the BIGGEST amount of hate after this … i wasn’t a stan page i literally just posted 30s clips from the streams lol
before Dream stans there was CallMeCarson stans, arguably much worse
Minecraft has fallen
Billions must play Indev, Infdev, Alpha
god smplive comes back to haunt me every single time
living through was crazy but what really took the cake was when noah hugbox went joker mode before he released the info about carsons grooming 💀
Really put this video into perspective: ruclips.net/video/dpPmKx8r_kE/видео.html
@KyotoCommentates i didnt realise he talked about it afterwards too 💀 it really was like they were trapped if they wanted to speak on anything of the matter and it created such a divide between the groups like u mentioned at the end
Crazy how all of this was tame compared to the average Dream stan
0:58 Eminem sampled a Dido song, they didn’t collaborate
i'm sorry much needed ban? it was one of the few sites to properly tag nsfw content and frankly kept the weirdo culture isolated to the site, with the one thing which made it tolerable gone... everywhere else became even more of a cesspool. impressive noting twitter and reddit were already mocked and discord already had it's poor reputation with "mods little kittens"
My issue is more with the CP rings that had infested the site
This was very well made, good job
Great Video Dude, but one tip/criticism: If you show Tweets or other types of text, make sure to leave them in the video long enough so people can actually read them. Its incredibly frustrating to start reading and immediately getting hit with a cut to the next segment…
how does this only have 3.6K views 😭
Just posted this yesterday, try checking back in a week or two to see how things play out
I'm going to comment as someone who has severe ADHD and regularly hyperfixates to the point that it somewhat interferes with my day-to-day life.
The MF DOOM instrumentals faintly in the background make me so happy
@@illusioncat556 also I don't think you fully read my comment since you would have seen I agree with you
@@funnynamehere1261 Yeah my bad man, I was still upset about a previous comment I saw and jumped the gun so my apologies for that😅
Some people when nervous.. LAUGH. Because they have never learned a better way to deal with it. The stans should never be sided with because their goal was to cancel them, rather than ‘hold them accountable.’
corporate clash music jumpscare
This is a good video, despite making me feel sad, smp live felt like the last genuine community
Shit like this makes me praise god for making me a normal human being and not some terminally online reprobate.
"Nicole" mysteriously deactivated a while ago, I like to think that she's moved away from stan Twitter as well
Smp live have a glorious rise and a horrific downfall
I am so blessed to have been there to watch the best moments
I was hoping people would forget about the fact people tried to cancel cscoop
i'd say i myself am regarded as a "stan" because im a pretty intense fan and i have autism, which means when i say intense, i mean i retain and could list off everything about some celebrities or streamers i like. trust me, as someone whos been called a stan, not all people who get dubbed stans are totally insane at a stalker level, and even we the more intense or knowledgeable fans are disgusted by the weirdos and stalkers of fandom spheres.
What..? A stan is a stalker fan. Thats the literal definition. You are a fan. Being hyperfixated and stalkerish are two different things. All stans are bad an obsessive.
im saying that people with hyperfixations are often labelled stans and the term is used too liberally. @@ShadowIsABaby
im saying that people call anyone whos a fan a stan and that its unfair, and we need to keep in mind that actual stans exist and it means stalker. @@ShadowIsABaby
@@elliesloan7084 You need to word things differently, this sounded like you were defending stans but then.. not defending them-?
@@ShadowIsABaby i was not meaning to sound as though i was defending stans, a poor wording on my part, apologies
1:31 there's a message that says: "appearantly a bunch of stans creamed themselves over this clip because this guy wasn't supposed to eat the nugget or some sh*t idk idc"
I never knew my real ladder
This is incredibly messed up. I have no youtube group that I’m following ever since stan culture brought all this crashing down.
Oh boy the irony with the end chapter
10:00 I swear to god I saw crumb on a twitch con video...
im sorry but nobody went crazy over the nugget LMAOO
Could You Make A Video About Ruben Sim? Just Curious.
That might be a bit further down the road but I’ll put it on the docket
@@KyotoCommentatesAnd This Could Be The Title Of That Video, If You Make It Ofc: "The Roblox TROLL Sued By Roblox Themselves - The Story Of Ruben Sim"
stan culture was horrid in 2020
especially with the rise of the dream smp, i saw alot of horror as i did alot of observing during the time and it was just so bad
I feel like this video will be played in History class in 2060
A RUclips History Class would be too whitewashed to include something like this lol
