When will parents realize that technology is not a substitute for a babysitter? I grew up in the 2000s without a phone. I had my cartoons and my video games, yes, but they didn't consume my life. I went outside, I rode my bike, I played with toys, I made new friends. It breaks my heart that less and less kids are growing up with these crucial things. Edit: It's worth clarifying that I don't believe all technology is bad for children. I think it's ok for kids to be introduced to things like phones and computers gradually as they become old enough to be trusted with them. It's also important to remember that moderation is key. RUclips and video games are fine, as long as they're age appropriate and the kid isn't glued to their screen 24 hours a day. Social media though? Yeah. Keep them far, far away from that hot mess. As a child, my brother always told me never to get near youtube. I never understood why. Everyone around me was on youtube, my brother did everything to make sure I didn't get anywhere near it. I thought it was unfair. I thought he was the worst. Then I saw everyone around me, without youtube I had so much time to get better at math and sports. As soon as I watched this video, I realized everything that my brother did for me, to protect me. Thank you, brother.
Precisely, when you allow the Internet to raise your kid, you are allowing everyone online to raise your kid. This results in the child being influenced by not only good influence but more so of negative influence, and false information. This is also something we must be aware of as teens and even adults

Watching this is so heartbreaking. My little sister is glued to her tablet, she doesn’t touch ANY toys despite having so many. She only talks to her friends at school. She doesn’t have interest in sleepovers or playing at all. I keep trying to tell my parents how harmful this is to her development and childhood but they just won’t listen. It breaks my heart watching my sister grow up GLUED to her tablet. She can’t even watch a single movie anymore without getting bored and needing her tablet. She can’t spend time with family without begging for her tablet. It’s just depressing…

this is the exact problem my brorther is facing right now. Luckily for me though we got him to watch some actual real TV shows, and so he became interested in playing with the toys. I think it would be really helpful to your sister if she got to watch an actual TV show because they don't tend to be as highly edited as those youtube videos, and since theres merch she'll be able to play with the toys and use her imagination. I recommend bluey cause my siblings watch it and I watch it with them sometimes and from what I can tell it's really great. A warning though, a lot of kids shows have weird internet fandoms (my brother for example watches thomas, and now draws this creepy Thomas.exe thing everytime he gets a pencil and paper). Today I saw three kids sitting in a triangle (the oldest was about 9, the youngest about 3) all on their phones watching RUclips shorts. Watching Millenial parents not realize that giving their children access to the internet while they can barely form a sentence is bad makes me feel very ill.
I was at an airport on the 31st to go back home after vacation, and at a restaurant inside the airport, there were 5 children under the age of 10 at the very least who were all on their iPads, silent, just staring at it, not talking to eachother either.

As a 16 year old this was a serious eye-opener to just how drastic being locked away from public and socialization has been on me. Constantly burning out, constantly not feeling enough dopamine, not enough serotonin. My brain isn't the same anymore due to just how much the pandemic has screwed up how I function as a person. Many people, my age or older, didn't just experience mental illness from the pandemic, but also destroyed childhoods and normalized things like shoving an iPad in front of a kid's face. Hell, when I was young, it was always an iPod or an iPad shoved in my face to keep me distracted while my mother was focused on men. I hope this stuff doesn't have to happen to our future generations, and I hope people realize just how awful this method of parenting is

One of the most amazing yet heartbreaking memories I have is when a really young family friend was having a meltdown during a power outage, and I got him to calm down by just sitting down and singing to him. It's heartbreaking because I think that was the first and only time anyone had ever tried to sing him a lullaby, one of the most basic parent/child interactions.

No tv or pc until you studied and read at least a whole short book or several chapters. Played outside. You can have tech, as long as it doesnt rule you. That was a exact problem with us, Gen Z, and the Millenials with the PC's, kids didnt want to go out to play videogames or get basically hypnotized in the old RUclips Now our labour is not to complain, yet it is to protect the children from the harmful content that many corporations secretly make, It's our labour to protect gen alpha, just as the millenials did with our generation.
Whenever I find myself on YT shorts, I have to snap myself out of it and remind me that it’s no better than TikTok and that I have better things I could be doing.
@@drewholmes7356 If you want to nip the problem in the bud, there's scripts and extensions that outright hide Shorts from you but it's much harder to do on mobile which doesn't have such tools. I do this myself on my PC setup because I hate the things and they always get included in the search results so blocking them cleans that up.

Actually, as a Gen Z from 2009 to 2015 I watched videos that were played by the generation before Gen Z. (Millennials probably) and I wasn't considered cringe because adults that were gaming could relate. I'm a Gen Z (2001). Seeing everything change from my little siblings life, I feel everything such a social media content and influence has a negative impact on all of us. However, I'm of the belief that it has greatly impacted the social skills and thought patterns of Gen Alpha significantly more.
As an older and more mature member of Generation Alpha (2012) I grew up with a device, but I didn’t watch the brainrot content. I got and still get good grades in school, and I like to do other things that are fun to me like playing video games and going outside to watch airplanes fly over me, the content that kids are consuming is an embarrassment to our world, and I hope we can change that!
I work at a toy shop. A mother literally came in around the Christmas period, feeling lost over what to get her kids for Christmas as they mostly spend time online and never go out with friends, or play with toys. It’s a very real issue, unfortunately
Yeah. I was entirely lost on what to get my youngest sibling this year for christmas. Shes turning 8 this year and she genuinely has no interest in stuff that isnt playing roblox or watchibg youtube. I wanted to get her a crafting kit to make a hobby horse, since i have seen a lot of them pop up and be very popular where i live, and i LOVED all types of crafting kits as a kid, and when i told my mom she told me to not even bother with crafting kits because my sister wouldnt use them. Hearing that genuinely made me entirely lost and kind of made my heart break, because at least in my experience from when i was a kid, crafting kits were all over the place and most kids loved them. I ended up making a knotted bracelet for her because i couldnt think of anything else to give her, since she doesnt play with most toys either. Its so sad to see.

He is the only child and there isnt any other kids in the house so i be playing with him sometiems when i can. With that being said though my child is a non verbal autistic so he is obsessed over shapes. So that is why it was easy for me to buy something for him
Are they autistic? My son has Autism and was diagnosed at the age of 3. He's never had any interest in toys except very recently (he's turning 11 so its taken this long for him to develop that interest). If they are neurotypical though, that is very concerning.

The issue with Gen Alpha isn't their goofy songs or silly videos (albeit cringyworthy), it's how Ipads replace parents as the figure to go to. Since a developing kid LOVES the stimulation provided by their device, when it's taken away it makes them have tantrums. This leads to them having short attention spans and a crippling addiction that worsens their chances of making it in a social society that isn't anywhere as close to the stimulation of a brainrotting device. Something else alarming however, is the amount of horrible idols these kids find on the internet. With the absense of parental figures in their life, they look up to streamers like Speed which teach them feel like it's okay to do really stupid things, while also exposing kids to innapropiate topics. No kid should be talking about a "gyatt". Many s*xual innuendos are present in streams that is a real big issue by itself tl;dr Don't let the internet raise your kids. It's not their fault that they've been raised by brainrot, and you can't blame people for making fun of them for that.

Kids should have monitored screen time maybe have them watching shows like Big city greens, amphibia, Molly McGee, bluey, haileys on it, kiff, on ghee happy, the story bots, trash truck and Ridley jones. Not the trash RUclips overstimulation content and while the story bots and ghee happy are RUclips shows they are high quality shows. Hell even something like TTG is mindless silliness but high quality. By that I mean the people making actually want to make something good for the audience and not just cashing in on overstimulation. Stay away from RUclips influencers and elsagate content. Preferribly stick to Disney plus and quality tv shows. Ghee happy and storybots are good shows too because they are high quality.

Disney is pushing that heavily these days because of ESG and the message is what matters to them. As long it's something older and not heavily censored or full of propaganda, there's an endless amount of stuff on there for children.

If you’re a parent and you want a tip about raising kids to prevent possible screen addiction, what my mom did for me to regulate time watching RUclips was to have one hour per each book/chapter I read of a book and have a full conversation of what I thought about of what I read with. It really helped me not only not stay on screens all the time, but encouraged me to read and also helped me understand what I was reading and how to talk about the themes. I don’t know if this helps, but I think my mom doing this for me really helped me. So if you have time to do this with your kid, I really encourage trying it. Start with shorter books, and get to chapter books.
My mum used play money where 5 dollar notes were 5 mins on the computer, 50 was 50 mins etc, and I'd earn the play money by doing chores, having good manners and being courteous, doing homework unasked etc.

Man this video is an incredible wake up call. As an older brother, I wish I had done more to keep my baby sister away from technology. Her having her first phone BEFORE 5 is beyond insane, and I should have done something sooner. Nothing breaks my heart more than telling her "I love you," only to be met by silence because she was too focused on watching youtube rot. I’m an older sibling, I’m 2005 and my sister is 2013. Just in that time between us, our relationships with the internet are VERY different. Of course I consumed my own flavour of harmful content but I had access to it later in life and already knew how to regulate my decision making. My sister, however, has had a screen in her face since EARLY on. She can’t write, she can barely read, her vocab is below the average for when I was her age. She endlessly watches utter drivel and has zero imagination, beginning and ending with “what if I could fly?”. And all of her school friends and age group are like this, dopamine deficient, unimaginative zombies. WE NEED TO LET KIDS BE BORED!!
Yeah, I've met a iPad kid who yells at his mom and have several tantrums and the content he watches is concerning he's literally 9. He can barely read, write or do math. He also is very inappropriate and swears

Thankfully, my cousins are raising their kids with a limit on what they consume in this way. My older cousin has two girls who are 15 and 12, and whenever we get together as a family, their phones are nowhere to be seen. They do talk about TikTok trends, so they watch TikTok, but they know that family time is family time and they don't take out their phones. My cousin pays attention to what TV shows they watch, too. My younger cousin has a 2-year-old and I've never seen her with a phone or an ipad. She has books and toys, but my cousin never tries to use a phone or tablet to entertain her or to keep her occupied. If I had kids I'd be the same- entertainment comes from toys and books, and maybe TV shows like Bluey. No smart phones or tablets until they are at least teenagers.
This literally breaks my heart....im a mother to a 3 year old and I will die defending my choice to NEVER buy her an IPad or give her a phone. I cant imagine ignoring your child and pushing this crap on them. The furthest ill venture is Bluey on the Living room tv and that is more than enough for her....

I work at a daycare with preschool aged children. Previously, I was a high school English teacher. Ive worked with every age group in between and I plan to start a family in the coming months. Needless to say, I have a huge heart for kids and it's wonderful to hear others sharing that sentiment in an increasingly antinatalist world. I have seen it all first hand. The horrific behavior, the blatant disrespect towards authority, the screen addiction, and worst of all, the sexualization of children. It has bled through all ages of gen alpha. I'm genuinely heartbroken for these children who have such desperate and/or braindead parents

i grew up watching creepypasta videos, fred, annoying orange and other mindless content. The difference i see is how young gen alpha is consuming it, and how these parents aren’t atleast seeing what their kids watching, atleast listen to what they’re watching.

I think what bothers me is that Skibbidy Toilet wasn't made for kids and has a very deep message on big media and the small content creators going up against such as the series progresses. The problem is, parents don't pay attention to what their kids watch, which means that videos like this lose their meaning and become kids' clickbait due to their virality, turning said videos unfairly into the villain. It's actually really sad.
What struck me is how quick toys based on recent properties will be churned out. It only took mere days for people to "come up" with merch of poppy playtime, skibidi toilet and stuff like that
I’m still surprised that people are so stunned that children mimic characters in their shows (ex skidibi toilet) and that some young kids will inevitably get bratty when told no. If your kid actually gets that bent out of shape over being told not to watch something, then you need to step up as a parent to get them to better manage their disappointment at being told no or see a medical professional if they really can’t be taught to better regulate their emotions. It’s sad to see people blame literal children for this stuff.

I feel like Gen Z has also been affected by this as well. I’m a 20 year old Gen Z college student who still struggles with RUclips addiction that affects my daily life. The addiction started back when I was in elementary school around the mid to late 2000s and would watch what are now considered internet classics like jumpscare compilations, old gameplays, RUclips poops, and brony content. By the time elsagate videos started popping up, I was fortunately old enough to recognize how garbage they were and avoided them. I’m on the autism spectrum and suffer from depression/anxiety caused by past trauma of failure, which makes it very hard for me to try new things and maintain interest in hobbies, so watching RUclips gives me an easy dopamine rush that I can never get out of anything else. I recognize this is a problem and am currently taking meditation/yoga classes and seeing a mental health trainer to better tend to my mental health and overcome my addiction. I don’t speak for all of Gen Z but I truly envy the past generations for not having to deal with these harmful addictions brought on by the internet. I can only hope things get better for both myself and others going through the same thing.
Holy shit that's a total mood for me. I think I can definitely relate to you as someone else with autism in struggling to grow up quite a bit and succumbing to an internet addiction, wanting to spend a lot of time on Discord to compensate for issues with social anxiety and awkwardness. That whole meme about "eating without RUclips" sure as hell had some truth to it at this point, and even if I'm doing quite a bit better with college and expect to graduate soon, I fear I'd not fully remember important things I've learned afterwards. It's for the best I start taking up something that doesn't require my PC more often, like perhaps dabbling in traditional drawing given I'm already learning digital art.
1997 born and while maybe I wasn’t really affected as a young kid I still think as social media and mobile devices have become normalized, we have ALL been negatively affected. But gen alpha growing up not knowing anything else is greatly concerning.

They can’t even sit and have a family meal without the tablet, and even people I know who have very high screen time can put their phone down and join in with a totally random conversation with their family at the dinner table, I have loads of memories of funny arguments and stories told at the table, all they will remember is watching toilets with heads fighting. These are our future doctors, teachers, nurses. Right now there aren't enough dentists and that's a big problem, and if gen alpha aren't educated enough the problem will get worse. A few months ago, I stayed with my mom and twin brother at a second women’s shelter after we were nearly evicted from our home, considering my dad’s emotional abuse towards us. While we remained there until moving into an apartment in early November, I was mortified that the kids who ended up down in the living room, kept consuming mindless Elsagate content. There was a time where some kid nearly stole my mom and twin brother’s phone whilst hyperactive. Parents raising their kids on iPads was a mistake. And I can’t stop them from letting the child they raised lose them, only some. You’re such an oracle to this age of technology. More people need to hear your wise words!
I was born in 2009 now even though I am really close to gen alpha I act more gen z but I definitely see the gen alpha in kids my grade. But I am technically gen z. But I agree Tom and Jerry was amazing

Times like these, I reflect on how lucky I was to have two loving parents in a stable home, who sat me down with real physical games, real physical toys, and most importantly, real physical books. I didn't even know what a Nintendo was until I went to school, and only got to play one or watch TV if my behaviour and grades were kept to a high standard. At the time, I thought I had arbitrarily strict, stuffy, boring parents. Nowadays, I can only imagine what a hassle it was to maintain those boundaries and put up with my resentfulness so I didn't turn into some kind of emotionally and mentally stunted goblin.
I had a mixed experience. I was given a mix of physical toys and a PSP at an early age. Had it not been for those toys I don't think I would grow to love Lego and actually play with toy cars, but at the same time the inclination to PSP nearly had been a mistake. I had access to the internet at an early age, not even a decade old yet. I must've been lucky not to grow up into a shut-in (i was still shy & timid generally but i didn't shut myself fully). I still regret not being able to experience and play street games that a Filipino kid got used to (I'm middle-gen z so I'm right in the middle of the ever-changing culture scape) but found comfort in building blocks (amongst all toys, building blocks always stuck out with me) Now here I am, older. Wanting to learn more new things, got a hobby, made new friends. I feel like my familiarity with technology, I can use to record or show my talents if I ever fully develop one. I still have much to catch up on, if anything Gen Z should make use of their tech-based environment to help spread and teach multiple things to their "younger sibling" Gen Alphas. Being "middle" Gen Z gets you the best of the mid-2000s and early- 2010s world.

Example: The Amazing Digital Circus. I've been following it's development since Glitch Productions first announced it, certainly before the pilot came out. The one episode that has been released so far is, but the creator has stated MANY times it's just going to get worse as the series goes on. And seeing how Glitch was happy to pick up Murder Drones (no shade. Murder Drones was how I found Glitch in the first place) and the creator seems like the kind of person to enjoy creating eldritch horrors too I can only imagine what's in store. And yet the goddamn content farms chose it as the next bIg trend to focus on. made even worse with all the videos with sexual themes. Some kids are eventually going to get curious and look for the original source material and it just has me worried. BRIGHT COLORS AND CUTE CHARACTERS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT'S FOR KIDS EITHER!! i’m currently substitute teaching for an elementary school and the children’s attention spans genuinely worry me. that along with the things they choose to talk about. getting through a lesson is nearly impossible due to them being constantly distracted.

I just want to say, I’m a 13 yr old gen alpha - gen z student who is forced to stare at computers and be around other dumb children in my classes. I’m an intelligent student who strives for perfection which in itself is bad, but I don’t care. I’m tired of stupid kids and their dumb “brain rot” fodder that they self watch. The best device I personally own is a IPad. I’m not idiotic enough to watch brain rot and useless junk that will ruin my life. I’m lonely with no friends becuase my humor is out of touch I tell myself. My family seriously hates swearing or dirty jokes becuase we come from private schools were I was probably the most popular kid ever. The education system and my peers screwed me over completely. It’s so freaking disgusting. I think the world will be over soon though. So I’ll keep trying, and when I become one of the smartest, I will simply laugh. As a 21 year old junior in college and a future teacher (6-12), myself and my peers have expressed a lot of concern about the new generation of Students and it’s driving away a lot of good teacher candidates. I feel old saying “kids these days…” but it’s true. Calling back to my own education it’s easy to see just how much things have changed. Covid has hindered MANY students and living in a state with sucky education it’s sad to see but hopefully teachers will be able to handle and nurture the future generation

since ur an aspiring teacher I'm sure yk this already, but many schools these days are implementing technology into their education. When I was in elementary we had this thing called reading buddies where the older students would help the younger students read. Originally it was just us helping them pronounce words in some old kids book from our library, but just three years later these kids all had ipads they read from and play games on after theyre done reading. The school environment has changed A LOT, but I'm glad to see future teachers are worrying for the new generation

i agree! i was born in 2003 and i was the weirdo kid (thankfully) who didn’t get a phone till i was 13 and honestly i wish i’d gone for longer without. it was so much fun playing outside with friends and playing with dolls and coming up with stories. i’m trying to make better habits for me now using my phone because there is so much more to life. this video has been both worrying and nostalgic.
As a gen z who was mostly raised by the internet I want to get a job that gives me time at home just so that if I get kids one day I'll take good care of them and teach them how read and write the languages I know
I’m a nanny and for one of my familys, i’m the designated “screen time adult”. I see these kids once a week, and i allow 30 minutes at a time, and sitting next to them the whole time, monitoring what they watch. Then, we are off to our activities, doing arts and craft or playing with their many toys. This system satisfies their screentime needs and gives me my two minutes to eat my lunch.
As a gen z, it's not the kids fault. It's the parents fault for not monitoring what they watch. Gen z has a way better childhood than gen alphas will ever have.
I'm a millennial and I think we had healthier childhoods than Gen Z. I didn't have a phone until I was 12, and it was a Nokia brick. Social media didn't exist until I was well into my teens. I didn't have a smartphone until I was 20. As a kid, I played outside with other kids. I did some dumb shit and got into trouble, but on the whole it was a pretty "normal" childhood. I definitely saw some shit I shouldn't have on the 00s internet... I don't think I permanently screwed up my brain but you never know 😅 I'm not trying to flex and say I'm better than you, I just think things really _were_ better for kids in the past. I think Gen X had more-or-less normal childhoods growing up in a relatively high-trust society without the dangers of modern technology... my generation was the start of things going wrong, but they hadn't gone _that_ wrong yet.

Minecraft videos were basically all I watched, that and a lot of cable cartoons. I played outside a bunch, but then basically every kid in my town up and left. Now it’s just me and some younger kids.
No, our videos were not as bad as gen alpha videos. The videos we watched were made and targeted for older audiences. SFM videos were for teens. Even if some of us weren’t old enough to watch them they weren’t for us. The content today was manufactured to addict children, the content we watched was just goofy for the fun of it, and way more creative then modern stuff.
FunVideoTV and 3lame studios disprove us watching slop. Not to mention the fact that some of us have become openly horny more than what is acceptable in public, and that isn't good either.

It's disgusting that those parents are in a world that forces them to prioritize working often multiple jobs just to stay afloat, while also being given no time to perform the unbelievably difficult task of raising a whole human being. Situations like this require empathy, and though it may be easier to just blame the parents, considering theyre the easiest targets, we must acknowledge that they are in pretty awful situations. Raising a child requires ENDLESS time and patience, something a normal human has none of after working a demeaning job all day. Children are, lets face it, annoying. Is it their fault? Absolutely not, but they still are. One cant expect these overworked parents to be able to handle all of that, its simply not sustainable. The blame is within the current economy, and those up top who are knowingly and intentionally exploiting these parents. Bring the blame back upon those who deserve it, and try to at least understand the struggle these parents are going through.

As someone who is on the brink of gen alpha and a person who watched gen alpha grow throughout my life I can really say that I feel like all the brain rot started because of the pandemic and growing up indoors and watching RUclips so much more (I used to play outside for hours until the pandemic came) and it feel like not much of the brain rot would have been here if the pandemic hit and people were forced to stay inside
Physical media is SUCH a good idea in general. Not only will you be able to control what your kids watch and they’d still have a good amount of wholesome content, it also ensures that you’ll be able to watch it whenever you want. Streaming services are all over the place these days and it can be very tricky to get everything you want to watch in one place, so having the ability to get physical DVDs for you and the kids will be amazing in the long run. I grew up with rental DVDs and it worked out very well for me.

As a Gen Z born in 2005, I can say that I'm glad I grew up with my Nintendo Wii, Wii U, DS/3DS, going to the park everytime after school, visiting a few fairgrounds throughout the year, playing with legos, my old computer to watch a little YT and some movies on DVD, and watching the classic cartoons on Disney Channel, Disney Jr, Disney XD, Nicktoons, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang to.

Great video, I am happy you point out things most don't think about with this topic. It isn't the fault of these kids, their parents also aren't the ones to blame because they don't understand how awful a place the internet is. The people that make content farms, and the companies putting a lot of effort into making products as addictive as possible are to blame.

As a big brother who is 14 years apart to his youngest brother always try to teach my parents and babysitters to interact play and learn with my lil bros, most of the time they roll their eyes and say that they have nothing else to do. But sometimes I win and let my parents know the danger of internet content. My brothers are allowed to have some screen time, but only with content that goes under my jurisdiction and I am happy to announce that my brothers are healthy, intelligent, curious and most important of all, happy and creative. That's very good, self-control when it comes to the internet and social media is one of the most important things nowadays. Not looking at social media for a least a week every month is healthy.

I help out at a kids club for kids aged 4 - 10 I was shocked when I heard kids around 6-7 talking about skin walkers chasing each other and having fun I was worried but they were enjoying them self and I looked back on all the creepy pastas and old RUclips art projects and realised what they were doing wasnt as bad but still it was worrying
I call your attention, as a teenager, to Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood. That program, is ONE of the very BEST programs for your children to watch. I've watched it since I was little, and even as I play with my model buses (I'm a teenager), Mr. Rogers was the best program ever. He was informative, educative, and it was worth watching. It's relaxing. It was amazing. Rest in Peace, Mr. Rogers.
Ah, an old classic. Blue’s Clues is a pretty good one too, and it’s original run (not the reboot) is quite similar to Mr. Rogers. Occasionally I’ll watch Blue’s Clues episodes as an adult for the nostalgia, and it’s not half bad.
Honestly feels like a US only problem. I live in another country and while theres still some brainrot like Skibidi, Rizz, and other stuff, kids are still pretty normal. Heck I've seen kids run around the supermarket and play with each other.
As an elementary school teacher I’m afraid to say that our next generation is doomed. I’ve just about given up on half these kids because they are being raised on RUclips where they learn things. I understand parents want kids to leave them alone, but to have them on their tablet whenever they have free time is unhealthy. Kids in first grade are unable to actively engage with others and it constantly leads to fights. I’ve been physically attacked by many of my younger students whenever I have to punish them accordingly after they get in a physical fight with another student and hurt another child. Their parents pretty much only do their parenting job when it comes to scolding them so the thought of them getting in trouble makes them act out further. I’ve been bitten, scratched, sometimes even stabbed with pens, pencils and scissors. I’m about ready to quit because I genuinely don’t think this next generation can be saved. You guys can comment how I’m inconsiderate to the younger generation as much as they want, but after two years of this I think it’s time for me to go to a new job where I don’t have to worry about my own students attacking me because they can’t handle the concept of a five minute time out.

This reminds me of that section in one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. With Greg mentioning Manny's consumption of a weird kids show and how it slurred his speech. Confusing the family. Goes to show how the series impacted my generation, and how its small details like this I have remembered. After years of not touching the first 12 books I still have stored in a box after stopping with the 13th installment.
This makes it sad knowing that there is a movie adaptation of The Long Haul that tried to be "modern" and "hip". And pretty much embodies the very essence of "brainrot" being forced down into a series that works well without them

I seriously wouldn’t give any other content that I wasn’t used to a chance. This was when I was 10 back in 2015. Right now i'm 14, i'm a retro gamer having 8 consoles and more than 80 games, but i have a very good childhood, having friends playing with them, playing with my toys, playing with my sister and using my wii!!! But when i use yt, i watch some nee super mario bros wii videos, i've got a lot of fun but now i think i don't have the same hapiness... And the gen alpha kids.... They can't enjoy they're childhood and whe they grow up, they will be a very sad people and never understand the expirience of a true life!!!
As a big sister, I am worried for these children because my brother is only 8 yet he's swears at me like a teenager and the only thing he's does is watch his tablet. Whenever I take it away because he won't listen he starts whining and my parents tell me to give it back. Despite all of this, he cries when he has to do his work and he almosy failed the first and second grade because i had to do his work for him when I was in 3rd grade. He always gets in trouble at school and when I tell my parents that they should discipline him, they say "What do you expect me to do about?" Even though they're the ones who gave a 4 year old a tablet. They tell me to stop acting 21 to solve problems even though he has this attitude. They just let him have his tablet and act like a brat whole this kid isn't having a bright future. And it isn't even his fault. They just won't let me do anything. He is now a liar and someone who swears like a sailor. Now I don't even care if he whines or what my parents say because he should learn that he can't get everything he wants and crying won't give him what he wants. And he should do his work instead of me being forced to take time out of my day to help him just because he doesn't pay attention in class's and is always playing. He's always watching RUclips shorts and his attention span is destroyed. He's about to go to 4th grade and he still writes like a 1st grader and can't even do common addition subtraction or multiplication. I know as a person who's part of the early Gen alpha I think these kids can still be changed but only if we do something about these children. This is genuinely sad. These kids didn't even ask for this. 11/10/2024 - - Things haven't really gotten any better. He now likes to spit on me and throw sharp or other things at me. The only things my parents do is take his electronics away but he still does the same things... He also likes to moan and keep saying inappropriate things.. It seems hopeless at this point.
Unfortunately I can understand that, unfortunately my family has a similar problem, but unfortunately there's not much I can do about it. It's not taken seriously.
If he fails, he fails. Don’t do his work, do not help him with anything, make him think for himself. If he uses the tech to cheat then record it and show the teacher. They are responsible for the child’s success and if he fails it reflects poorly on them and the parents. If possible even record him swearing like a sailor and show his classmates. Nobody likes an asshat so if he is shunned for it then that could make him change. If people knew how he treats you then logically he would treat them like that.
I used to be a full time nanny and hated how often the parents would suggest to me that I simply give the children their iPads to make my job easier...I have always found the "content" targeted towards children extremely disturbing the past decade or so. It's becoming more and more normalized as well. I recently went to a festival, and there was a children's section of the fair that had toys, kid rides, etc. You know what kind of plushies they had hanging everywhere? Huggy Wuggy...from the horror game Poppy Playtime! There were several kids running around with Huggy Wuggy toys as well. My partner and I kept saying "Why is this being sold to children? Why would they be watching/playing that?"
We are slowly living in a dystopia. Parents have to realize that they’re to blame and not what’s on the internet and not rely on a iPad as a babysitter. I grew up in the 2010s and only had an iphone and nintendo consoles but I still went outside, rode bikes and scooters, played sports like soccer/futbol played with plushies, hanged out with friends, and watched non brain rot stuff like Spongebob or Arthur.

As a 12 year old, the internet taught me way too many things I shouldn't know, has completely ruined me, I have serious mental health issues and I'm extremely burnt out all of the time . Same age here, I was never allowed tiktok and I think that was what saved me from huge amounts of brainrot. Unfortunately I have RUclips and because I am surrounded by all the brainrot kids that grew up with tiktok I agree with having more mental issues from the internet. When I take a break from the Internet I do feel more calm. But oh well... This is what everyone else in my generation is dealing with so I guess I should be use to it. Edit: Even though I haven't stumbled upon "eyebleach" worthy content my classmates have and definitely enjoy sharing and joking about it. I don't need/want to know half the things I do. I wish my classmates could have a filter. Edit 2: I agree with the person below me when it comes to fitting in. I'm not allowed a phone (yeah I'm a crusty iPad kid) and I feel like I'm always missing out on whatever new meme everyone is talking about at school. Like if I don't have social media I'm not "normal"
i’m 11 and its stressful to fit into school and society aswell. everyone in my school has insta, snapchat, discord, tiktok, etc. and i have none of them and i always get guilt tripped and felt bad for because of that. i still watch my comfort shows that my dead uncle watched before he died like ed, edd, and eddy, dexters laboratory, blues clues, and invader zim. i always find skibidi toilet, cocomelon, and multiple things out there to hurt my brain, and it feels so icky to the point i feel sick. the internet might be a good place, but being exposed to gore at the ripe young age of 6 is just horrible. i take breaks every now and then, go to places, get smoothies, etc. im trying to balance my life and my internet life.
As a very, VERY early gen alpha kid (barely a teenager, I know) I think I have to agree on this. I'm in a split class (grade 7 and 8) and I've noticed a lot of this myself, all the kids in the year before me taking any and every chance to check social media. The girls in particular also seem to fall into the Instagram rabbit hole of obsessive beauty and fashion, to the point where the majority of their insults are specifically about every minor detail about your appearance. The only way I got them to stop this was by dressing more and more different from the norm until they got so fed up with me they stopped insulting me all-together, which just goes to show how desperate they are for attention nowadays as well, particularly the instant gratification of someone reacting to whatever they say.
I have a little sister. She’s 8. I was so worried she got the “brainrot” since she uses RUclips, so as a concerned older sister, I asked. I was so relieved she stuck to the stuff I hoped she did, like what “normal” kids would watch. Drawing/art, animal videos, etc. I specifically asked about skibidi toilet, TADC, lankybox, and all of them. She said they were boring and dumb. Now, she still has gen alpha stereotypes, like she plays Fortnite for example. (I think a lot of gen z is also guilty of that too. I know I am.) and I’m so grateful my parents don’t give her social media other than RUclips since I’ve been on TikTok before and my gosh my attention span was not doing well. My little sister is my best friend, my other half. Which is why I was so concerned for her. But she wasn’t completely unaffected by the “brainrot” with gen alpha classmates, she is kind of exposed to it. She knows things that 8 year old me didn’t. Which scares me. But luckily she still has an attention span, plays with toys, goes outside, and has a childhood. I realized though that some of gen z is also affected by that content. I’m 13, and surrounded by gen z at school. So I have a front row seat to the affect it has on not just gen alpha. Most of the talk about skibidi toilet, coco melon, and such is just joking and ironic. But I realized that the attention span was affected too. And the behavior of my classmates is really aggravating. Yes, I know that middle schoolers will try and be the biggest menace or tough guy but I didn’t realize it would be this bad. But then, the worst kid has 0 internet access too. I still play with toys with my sister. And honestly it is so fun. The stories you can create are so amazing. And I realized that a lot of kids even my sister’s age don’t play with toys which kind of saddened me. Not just toys, they just don’t play in general. Again, I can never be grateful enough my sister wasn’t as affected by this stuff. I really am. When or if I become a parent I won’t give my children internet access until I feel they are ready. Maybe a few video games I grew up with like Minecraft, maybe Roblox. But I would also still see if they are ready. I want to give my children a better childhood than I had. Now, I love my parents, and feel bad blaming them for the way my childhood did turn out, but nobody is perfect. And you really realize adults aren’t what little you thinks they are and it kinda sucks to realize that. And honestly I forgive my parents for early internet access. They gave me the internet at around 5-6 and couldn’t take it away since I was so engrossed in it. When they took my games away I would lose it. Basically like a less severe skibidi tantrum. My sister got it even earlier since I already had it. And I realize that my parents gave me better than what they had, my mother tells me about the internet she had as a teenager and I’m disturbed by it and glad I didn’t grow up on what she did as a teen and instead grew up on the Minecraft and animal jam side of the internet. My little sister and I only really bring up the gen alpha stuff when we joke, but it’s funny how my little sister’s peers like it un ironically. I know this is really long but I felt smart writing it lol. I got into the flow of writing and kinda just realized how long it is right now. Hope you enjoyed reading it though! I'm older gen Z. I'm 19. I'll turn 20 soon. My girlfriend wants kids, I definitely do too. Eventually, when we do mange to have kids, there will be no iPads, no phones, only a PS2 with guitar hero. Toys, and a bunch of outdoor activities will be the best, but indoor activities are important, because we get huge storms and 100° heat in the summer sometimes. I can't wait to have my kid watch VHS tapes with me and make mudpies.

Oh yeah, i lost all chances of getting better when my entire family ignored how i was getting bullied at school. My family ruined me and they will NEVER understand. To all people who are planning to have kids, please don’t give tablets to your kids and let them have a limited time screen. Let them watch TV cartoon that is REALLY suitable for kids, give them toys, make them read a book, take them outside like some amusement park or camping, let them learn normal stuff, then give them internet access when they’re old enough. Putting the piano version of "Cancer" over the speech about needing parents got me. Parents are the LARGEST and most likely the most important part in a child's development. I'm not a parent, but an uncle and I try to involve myself in anything I can that my nieces' and nephews' are doing. Not as a helicopter but to teach them to ask questions, solve problems, let them know that if something goes wrong it isn't the end of the world and that there is always a solution to some point. See, they don't have a very good father and children NEED that bulwark of unconditional love and wisdom even if I don't know the answer. BE involved. Teach them when they don't know because they soak up EVERYTHING like a sponge, good and bad.
To all parents, or future parents : talk to your kids, read to your kids, get them interested in every subject they show interest, teach them to be curious and ask questions, don’t let them watch screens unsupervised, pick and pre-watch the content you allow them to watch. And let them explore, play outside and get bored ! Getting bored is crucial so they can find/create activities on their own !
This is why we need to give kids something other than a tablet or a phone. We need to let them do like we need which was okay outside, read books, watch TV, and make crafts.
Welp, and this in itself amends the fact that parents are increasingly caught up in their professional lives to the point of not having a routine that encourages constructive time with their children. And the concept of Third Space is dead in today's cities, and the concept of suburbia encourages isolation more than anything. But that's a robust enough topic to have discussions about on its own.
I'm a Gen Z and recently I've been witnessing my younger cousin become an I-Pad kid. I warned my mom not to buy her an I-Pad, but she did it anyway and it honestly hurts me to see how my cousin who I watched grow in her youngest years not even be able to watch a movie anymore without going on that I-Pad instead. I feel incredibly guilty for just standing by despite having all this knowledge on how harmful the shit that kids are having pushed on them online is. I think that this video perfectly summarises the situation at hand, and I honestly also hope that these kids aren't too far gone, especially because it would break my heart completely to see the children around me, such as my afforementioned cousin, lose touch with reality and become no more than an idle consumer of brainrot. I think I had good parenting because I get agitated whenever I hear skibidi used as an actual term. I also think that it helps that I was born like 6 years before brain rot came to be.
If this conversation happened years ago, people would take the "video games are harmful to you" approach. I thought that until I got into being a teacher aid. I still find adult swim stuff funny but to these kids they really try to act this stuff out, especially ones on disabilities. student teacher here, i have an internship at a school for kids age 5-14 (school system works differently here) and i am actually shocked by how different most gen Alpha kids act. they have very little remorse and respect for teachers or kids older than them and they view (mild) violence such as hitting and kicking as ‘normal’ it’s absolutely absurd. also most kids struggle with writing and reading nowadays.

I'm 11 and never watch this kind of weird stuff. I like space and drawing, and history. Unfortunately I can't say the same for other kids my age. When I was in 5th grade my entire class and my teacher had to ask me for help identifying different country's flags because apparently I was the only one in my class(including my teacher)who knew the world's flags. I don't belive they're dumb but I agree with you that covid has taken a toll on all of us. Especially kids.

Absolutely! Nothing beats reading a new book from your favorite series, or listening to counting Stars by OneRepublic on the way home from school on the radio. I think the problem is that there's no delay or effort needed before getting what they want. If they were to work for it, they would earn the satisfaction of having earned it, and understand that what they're getting is special. Otherwise, you have to learn to enjoy what you have. Parents these days should really consider things like taking their kids fishing. Heck, fishing is a perfect example of an ideal childhood. At first, it seems really slow, but with enough patience and effort, eventually you'll receive a huge reward, And it'll be worth it... Fuck, I wasted fifteen minutes typing this up, but I guess I just needed to let out all of my thoughts... If parents see this, please, just take your kids fishing, hiking, I don't give a shit. This new generation needs to experience the real world. Have them listen to some early 2000's music while you're at it... What is it with parents these days complaining about problems in their children that they themselves caused? It boggles my mind, genuinely.
I live in China and we are feeling the effects of the internet in moderation, I can’t imagine the west.
When will parents realize that technology is not a substitute for a babysitter? I grew up in the 2000s without a phone. I had my cartoons and my video games, yes, but they didn't consume my life. I went outside, I rode my bike, I played with toys, I made new friends. It breaks my heart that less and less kids are growing up with these crucial things.
Edit: It's worth clarifying that I don't believe all technology is bad for children. I think it's ok for kids to be introduced to things like phones and computers gradually as they become old enough to be trusted with them.
It's also important to remember that moderation is key. RUclips and video games are fine, as long as they're age appropriate and the kid isn't glued to their screen 24 hours a day. Social media though? Yeah. Keep them far, far away from that hot mess.

As a child, my brother always told me never to get near youtube. I never understood why. Everyone around me was on youtube, my brother did everything to make sure I didn't get anywhere near it. I thought it was unfair. I thought he was the worst. Then I saw everyone around me, without youtube I had so much time to get better at math and sports. Watching this is so heartbreaking. My little sister is glued to her tablet, she doesn’t touch ANY toys despite having so many. She only talks to her friends at school. She doesn’t have interest in sleepovers or playing at all. I keep trying to tell my parents how harmful this is to her development and childhood but they just won’t listen. It breaks my heart watching my sister grow up GLUED to her tablet. She can’t even watch a single movie anymore without getting bored and needing her tablet. She can’t spend time with family without begging for her tablet. It’s just depressing…

this is the exact problem my brorther is facing right now. Luckily for me though we got him to watch some actual real TV shows, and so he became interested in playing with the toys. I think it would be really helpful to your sister if she got to watch an actual TV show because they don't tend to be as highly edited as those youtube videos, and since theres merch she'll be able to play with the toys and use her imagination. I recommend bluey cause my siblings watch it and I watch it with them sometimes and from what I can tell it's really great. A warning though, a lot of kids shows have weird internet fandoms (my brother for example watches thomas, and now draws this creepy Thomas.exe thing everytime he gets a pencil and paper). Today I saw three kids sitting in a triangle (the oldest was about 9, the youngest about 3) all on their phones watching RUclips shorts. Watching Millenial parents not realize that giving their children access to the internet while they can barely form a sentence is bad makes me feel very ill.
Take the phone and give them a ball. They can learn the rolling game.
I was at an airport on the 31st to go back home after vacation, and at a restaurant inside the airport, there were 5 children under the age of 10 at the very least who were all on their iPads, silent, just staring at it, not talking to eachother either.

As a 16 year old this was a serious eye-opener to just how drastic being locked away from public and socialization has been on me. Constantly burning out, constantly not feeling enough dopamine, not enough serotonin. My brain isn't the same anymore due to just how much the pandemic has screwed up how I function as a person. Many people, my age or older, didn't just experience mental illness from the pandemic, but also destroyed childhoods and normalized things like shoving an iPad in front of a kid's face. Hell, when I was young, it was always an iPod or an iPad shoved in my face to keep me distracted while my mother was focused on men. I hope this stuff doesn't have to happen to our future generations, and I hope people realize just how awful this method of parenting is

One of the most amazing yet heartbreaking memories I have is when a really young family friend was having a meltdown during a power outage, and I got him to calm down by just sitting down and singing to him. It's heartbreaking because I think that was the first and only time anyone had ever tried to sing him a lullaby, one of the most basic parent/child interactions.

@@drewholmes7356 If you want to nip the problem in the bud, there's scripts and extensions that outright hide Shorts from you but it's much harder to do on mobile which doesn't have such tools. I do this myself on my PC setup because I hate the things and they always get included in the search results so blocking them cleans that up.

Actually, as a Gen Z from 2009 to 2015 I watched videos that were played by the generation before Gen Z. (Millennials probably) and I wasn't considered cringe because adults that were gaming could relate. They definitely relate to me saying what gen alpha is watching is cringe and everyone from Gen X, millennials and gen Z can agree that gen alpha are the ones that are doomed. gen z can be saved if they weren't tiktokers.

I'm a Gen Z (2001). Seeing everything change from my little siblings life, I feel everything such a social media content and influence has a negative impact on all of us. However, I'm of the belief that it has greatly impacted the social skills and thought patterns of Gen Alpha significantly more.

As an older and more mature member of Generation Alpha (2012) I grew up with a device, but I didn’t watch the brainrot content. I got and still get good grades in school, and I like to do other things that are fun to me like playing video games and going outside to watch airplanes fly over me, the content that kids are consuming is an embarrassment to our world, and I hope we can change that!

I work at a toy shop. A mother literally came in around the Christmas period, feeling lost over what to get her kids for Christmas as they mostly spend time online and never go out with friends, or play with toys.

Yeah. I was entirely lost on what to get my youngest sibling this year for christmas. Shes turning 8 this year and she genuinely has no interest in stuff that isnt playing roblox or watchibg youtube. I wanted to get her a crafting kit to make a hobby horse, since i have seen a lot of them pop up and be very popular where i live, and i LOVED all types of crafting kits as a kid, and when i told my mom she told me to not even bother with crafting kits because my sister wouldnt use them. Hearing that genuinely made me entirely lost and kind of made my heart break, because at least in my experience from when i was a kid, crafting kits were all over the place and most kids loved them. I ended up making a knotted bracelet for her because i couldnt think of anything else to give her, since she doesnt play with most toys either. Its so sad to see.

He still reach for my and my mom phone but i realized that he is spending less and less time on it and he now just want to eat and run and play. He is the only child and there isnt any other kids in the house so i be playing with him sometiems when i can.
With that being said though my child is a non verbal autistic so he is obsessed over shapes. So that is why it was easy for me to buy something for him

Are they autistic? My son has Autism and was diagnosed at the age of 3. He's never had any interest in toys except very recently (he's turning 11 so its taken this long for him to develop that interest). If they are neurotypical though, that is very concerning.

I would have loved them at his age… but there either just layed out somewhere, in the trash, or not opened. The issue with Gen Alpha isn't their goofy songs or silly videos (albeit cringyworthy), it's how Ipads replace parents as the figure to go to. Since a developing kid LOVES the stimulation provided by their device, when it's taken away it makes them have tantrums. This leads to them having short attention spans and a crippling addiction that worsens their chances of making it in a social society that isn't anywhere as close to the stimulation of a brainrotting device.
Something else alarming however, is the amount of horrible idols these kids find on the internet. With the absense of parental figures in their life, they look up to streamers like Speed which teach them feel like it's okay to do really stupid things, while also exposing kids to innapropiate topics. No kid should be talking about a "gyatt". Many s*xual innuendos are present in streams that is a real big issue by itself

Kids should have monitored screen time maybe have them watching shows like Big city greens, amphibia, Molly McGee, bluey, haileys on it, kiff, on ghee happy, the story bots, trash truck and Ridley jones. Not the trash RUclips overstimulation content and while the story bots and ghee happy are RUclips shows they are high quality shows. Hell even something like TTG is mindless silliness but high quality. By that I mean the people making actually want to make something good for the audience and not just cashing in on overstimulation. Stay away from RUclips influencers and elsagate content. Preferribly stick to Disney plus and quality tv shows. Ghee happy and storybots are good shows too because they are high quality.

Disney is pushing that heavily these days because of ESG and the message is what matters to them. As long it's something older and not heavily censored or full of propaganda, there's an endless amount of stuff on there for children.

My aunt works at the kindergarten and when ive been to visit her she asked me why children are afraid to go to the toilet and have excuses like a head will pop out and that is genuenly concerning
If you’re a parent and you want a tip about raising kids to prevent possible screen addiction, what my mom did for me to regulate time watching RUclips was to have one hour per each book/chapter I read of a book and have a full conversation of what I thought about of what I read with. It really helped me not only not stay on screens all the time, but encouraged me to read and also helped me understand what I was reading and how to talk about the themes. I don’t know if this helps, but I think my mom doing this for me really helped me. So if you have time to do this with your kid, I really encourage trying it. Start with shorter books, and get to chapter books.

Man this video is an incredible wake up call. As an older brother, I wish I had done more to keep my baby sister away from technology. Her having her first phone BEFORE 5 is beyond insane, and I should have done something sooner. Nothing breaks my heart more than telling her "I love you," only to be met by silence because she was too focused on watching youtube rot. I’m an older sibling, I’m 2005 and my sister is 2013. Just in that time between us, our relationships with the internet are VERY different. Of course I consumed my own flavour of harmful content but I had access to it later in life and already knew how to regulate my decision making. My sister, however, has had a screen in her face since EARLY on.
She can’t write, she can barely read, her vocab is below the average for when I was her age. She endlessly watches utter drivel and has zero imagination, beginning and ending with “what if I could fly?”.
And all of her school friends and age group are like this, dopamine deficient, unimaginative zombies.

Thankfully, my cousins are raising their kids with a limit on what they consume in this way. My older cousin has two girls who are 15 and 12, and whenever we get together as a family, their phones are nowhere to be seen. They do talk about TikTok trends, so they watch TikTok, but they know that family time is family time and they don't take out their phones. My cousin pays attention to what TV shows they watch, too. My younger cousin has a 2-year-old and I've never seen her with a phone or an ipad. She has books and toys, but my cousin never tries to use a phone or tablet to entertain her or to keep her occupied. If I had kids I'd be the same- entertainment comes from toys and books, and maybe TV shows like Bluey. No smart phones or tablets until they are at least teenagers.
This literally breaks my heart....im a mother to a 3 year old and I will die defending my choice to NEVER buy her an IPad or give her a phone. I cant imagine ignoring your child and pushing this crap on them. The furthest ill venture is Bluey on the Living room tv and that is more than enough for her....

I work at a daycare with preschool aged children. Previously, I was a high school English teacher. Ive worked with every age group in between and I plan to start a family in the coming months. Needless to say, I have a huge heart for kids and it's wonderful to hear others sharing that sentiment in an increasingly antinatalist world. I have seen it all first hand. The horrific behavior, the blatant disrespect towards authority, the screen addiction, and worst of all, the sexualization of children. It has bled through all ages of gen alpha. I'm genuinely heartbroken for these children who have such desperate and/or braindead parents

I think what bothers me is that Skibbidy Toilet wasn't made for kids and has a very deep message on big media and the small content creators going up against such as the series progresses. The problem is, parents don't pay attention to what their kids watch, which means that videos like this lose their meaning and become kids' clickbait due to their virality, turning said videos unfairly into the villain. It's actually really sad.
What struck me is how quick toys based on recent properties will be churned out. It only took mere days for people to "come up" with merch of poppy playtime, skibidi toilet and stuff like that

I’m still surprised that people are so stunned that children mimic characters in their shows (ex skidibi toilet) and that some young kids will inevitably get bratty when told no. If your kid actually gets that bent out of shape over being told not to watch something, then you need to step up as a parent to get them to better manage their disappointment at being told no or see a medical professional if they really can’t be taught to better regulate their emotions. It’s sad to see people blame literal children for this stuff.

I feel like Gen Z has also been affected by this as well. I’m a 20 year old Gen Z college student who still struggles with RUclips addiction that affects my daily life. The addiction started back when I was in elementary school around the mid to late 2000s and would watch what are now considered internet classics like jumpscare compilations, old gameplays, RUclips poops, and brony content. By the time elsagate videos started popping up, I was fortunately old enough to recognize how garbage they were and avoided them.
I’m on the autism spectrum and suffer from depression/anxiety caused by past trauma of failure, which makes it very hard for me to try new things and maintain interest in hobbies, so watching RUclips gives me an easy dopamine rush that I can never get out of anything else. I recognize this is a problem and am currently taking meditation/yoga classes and seeing a mental health trainer to better tend to my mental health and overcome my addiction.
I don’t speak for all of Gen Z but I truly envy the past generations for not having to deal with these harmful addictions brought on by the internet. I can only hope things get better for both myself and others going through the same thing.
Holy shit that's a total mood for me. I think I can definitely relate to you as someone else with autism in struggling to grow up quite a bit and succumbing to an internet addiction, wanting to spend a lot of time on Discord to compensate for issues with social anxiety and awkwardness. That whole meme about "eating without RUclips" sure as hell had some truth to it at this point, and even if I'm doing quite a bit better with college and expect to graduate soon, I fear I'd not fully remember important things I've learned afterwards.
It's for the best I start taking up something that doesn't require my PC more often, like perhaps dabbling in traditional drawing given I'm already learning digital art.

They can’t even sit and have a family meal without the tablet, and even people I know who have very high screen time can put their phone down and join in with a totally random conversation with their family at the dinner table, I have loads of memories of funny arguments and stories told at the table, all they will remember is watching toilets with heads fighting. A few months ago, I stayed with my mom and twin brother at a second women’s shelter after we were nearly evicted from our home, considering my dad’s emotional abuse towards us. While we remained there until moving into an apartment in early November, I was mortified that the kids who ended up down in the living room, kept consuming mindless Elsagate content. There was a time where some kid nearly stole my mom and twin brother’s phone whilst hyperactive. Parents raising their kids on iPads was a mistake. And I can’t stop them from letting the child they raised lose them, only some. You’re such an oracle to this age of technology. More people need to hear your wise words!

As a parent aged 34 (Daughter aged 5) - I am in the technology industry so I am well aware of the problem, I also am making steps said in this, just nice to hear someone say it out loud. Times like these, I reflect on how lucky I was to have two loving parents in a stable home, who sat me down with real physical games, real physical toys, and most importantly, real physical books. I didn't even know what a Nintendo was until I went to school, and only got to play one or watch TV if my behaviour and grades were kept to a high standard.
At the time, I thought I had arbitrarily strict, stuffy, boring parents. Nowadays, I can only imagine what a hassle it was to maintain those boundaries and put up with my resentfulness so I didn't turn into some kind of emotionally and mentally stunted goblin.
I had a mixed experience. I was given a mix of physical toys and a PSP at an early age. Had it not been for those toys I don't think I would grow to love Lego and actually play with toy cars, but at the same time the inclination to PSP nearly had been a mistake. I had access to the internet at an early age, not even a decade old yet. I must've been lucky not to grow up into a shut-in (i was still shy & timid generally but i didn't shut myself fully). I still regret not being able to experience and play street games that a Filipino kid got used to (I'm middle-gen z so I'm right in the middle of the ever-changing culture scape) but found comfort in building blocks (amongst all toys, building blocks always stuck out with me)
Now here I am, older. Wanting to learn more new things, got a hobby, made new friends. I feel like my familiarity with technology, I can use to record or show my talents if I ever fully develop one. I still have much to catch up on, if anything Gen Z should make use of their tech-based environment to help spread and teach multiple things to their "younger sibling" Gen Alphas.
Being "middle" Gen Z gets you the best of the mid-2000s and early- 2010s world.
I mean one of my earliest memories was of a sega genesis and I think I turned out fairly okay in most regards

Example: The Amazing Digital Circus. I've been following it's development since Glitch Productions first announced it, certainly before the pilot came out. The one episode that has been released so far is, but the creator has stated MANY times it's just going to get worse as the series goes on. And seeing how Glitch was happy to pick up Murder Drones (no shade. Murder Drones was how I found Glitch in the first place) and the creator seems like the kind of person to enjoy creating eldritch horrors too I can only imagine what's in store. And yet the goddamn content farms chose it as the next bIg trend to focus on. made even worse with all the videos with sexual themes. Some kids are eventually going to get curious and look for the original source material and it just has me worried. BRIGHT COLORS AND CUTE CHARACTERS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT'S FOR KIDS EITHER!! I've never looked but I'm not sure if Glitch at least put an age rating in the description which would be nice in the FEW cases where parents actually look at what their kids are watching

i’m currently substitute teaching for an elementary school and the children’s attention spans genuinely worry me. that along with the things they choose to talk about. getting through a lesson is nearly impossible due to them being constantly distracted.

I just want to say, I’m a 13 yr old gen alpha - gen z student who is forced to stare at computers and be around other dumb children in my classes. I’m an intelligent student who strives for perfection which in itself is bad, but I don’t care. I’m tired of stupid kids and their dumb “brain rot” fodder that they self watch. The best device I personally own is a IPad. I’m not idiotic enough to watch brain rot and useless junk that will ruin my life. I’m lonely with no friends becuase my humor is out of touch I tell myself. My family seriously hates swearing or dirty jokes becuase we come from private schools were I was probably the most popular kid ever. The education system and my peers screwed me over completely. It’s so freaking disgusting. I think the world will be over soon though. So I’ll keep trying, and when I become one of the smartest, I will simply laugh.

As a 21 year old junior in college and a future teacher (6-12), myself and my peers have expressed a lot of concern about the new generation of Students and it’s driving away a lot of good teacher candidates. I feel old saying “kids these days…” but it’s true. Calling back to my own education it’s easy to see just how much things have changed. Covid has hindered MANY students and living in a state with sucky education it’s sad to see but hopefully teachers will be able to handle and nurture the future generation

since ur an aspiring teacher I'm sure yk this already, but many schools these days are implementing technology into their education. When I was in elementary we had this thing called reading buddies where the older students would help the younger students read. Originally it was just us helping them pronounce words in some old kids book from our library, but just three years later these kids all had ipads they read from and play games on after theyre done reading. The school environment has changed A LOT, but I'm glad to see future teachers are worrying for the new generation

I’m a nanny and for one of my familys, i’m the designated “screen time adult”. I see these kids once a week, and i allow 30 minutes at a time, and sitting next to them the whole time, monitoring what they watch. Then, we are off to our activities, doing arts and craft or playing with their many toys. This system satisfies their screentime needs and gives me my two minutes to eat my lunch.
As a gen z, it's not the kids fault. It's the parents fault for not monitoring what they watch. Gen z has a way better childhood than gen alphas will ever have.

I'm a millennial and I think we had healthier childhoods than Gen Z. I didn't have a phone until I was 12, and it was a Nokia brick. Social media didn't exist until I was well into my teens. I didn't have a smartphone until I was 20. As a kid, I played outside with other kids. I did some dumb shit and got into trouble, but on the whole it was a pretty "normal" childhood.
I definitely saw some shit I shouldn't have on the 00s internet... I don't think I permanently screwed up my brain but you never know 😅
I'm not trying to flex and say I'm better than you, I just think things really _were_ better for kids in the past. I think Gen X had more-or-less normal childhoods growing up in a relatively high-trust society without the dangers of modern technology... my generation was the start of things going wrong, but they hadn't gone _that_ wrong yet.

Minecraft videos were basically all I watched, that and a lot of cable cartoons. I played outside a bunch, but then basically every kid in my town up and left. Now it’s just me and some younger kids.
No, our videos were not as bad as gen alpha videos. The videos we watched were made and targeted for older audiences. SFM videos were for teens. Even if some of us weren’t old enough to watch them they weren’t for us. The content today was manufactured to addict children, the content we watched was just goofy for the fun of it, and way more creative then modern stuff.
FunVideoTV and 3lame studios disprove us watching slop. Not to mention the fact that some of us have become openly horny more than what is acceptable in public, and that isn't good either.

It's disgusting that those parents are in a world that forces them to prioritize working often multiple jobs just to stay afloat, while also being given no time to perform the unbelievably difficult task of raising a whole human being. Situations like this require empathy, and though it may be easier to just blame the parents, considering theyre the easiest targets, we must acknowledge that they are in pretty awful situations. Raising a child requires ENDLESS time and patience, something a normal human has none of after working a demeaning job all day. Children are, lets face it, annoying. Is it their fault? Absolutely not, but they still are. One cant expect these overworked parents to be able to handle all of that, its simply not sustainable.
The blame is within the current economy, and those up top who are knowingly and intentionally exploiting these parents. Bring the blame back upon those who deserve it, and try to at least understand the struggle these parents are going through.

As someone who is on the brink of gen alpha and a person who watched gen alpha grow throughout my life I can really say that I feel like all the brain rot started because of the pandemic and growing up indoors and watching RUclips so much more (I used to play outside for hours until the pandemic came) and it feel like not much of the brain rot would have been here if the pandemic hit and people were forced to stay inside

Physical media is SUCH a good idea in general. Not only will you be able to control what your kids watch and they’d still have a good amount of wholesome content, it also ensures that you’ll be able to watch it whenever you want. Streaming services are all over the place these days and it can be very tricky to get everything you want to watch in one place, so having the ability to get physical DVDs for you and the kids will be amazing in the long run. I grew up with rental DVDs and it worked out very well for me.

As a Gen Z born in 2005, I can say that I'm glad I grew up with my Nintendo Wii, Wii U, DS/3DS, going to the park everytime after school, visiting a few fairgrounds throughout the year, playing with legos, my old computer to watch a little YT and some movies on DVD, and watching the classic cartoons on Disney Channel, Disney Jr, Disney XD, Nicktoons, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang to.

Great video, I am happy you point out things most don't think about with this topic. It isn't the fault of these kids, their parents also aren't the ones to blame because they don't understand how awful a place the internet is. The people that make content farms, and the companies putting a lot of effort into making products as addictive as possible are to blame.
Thank you for raising awareness about this problem. As a big brother who is 14 years apart to his youngest brother always try to teach my parents and babysitters to interact play and learn with my lil bros, most of the time they roll their eyes and say that they have nothing else to do. But sometimes I win and let my parents know the danger of internet content. My brothers are allowed to have some screen time, but only with content that goes under my jurisdiction and I am happy to announce that my brothers are healthy, intelligent, curious and most important of all, happy and creative. I help out at a kids club for kids aged 4 - 10 I was shocked when I heard kids around 6-7 talking about skin walkers chasing each other and having fun I was worried but they were enjoying them self and I looked back on all the creepy pastas and old RUclips art projects and realised what they were doing wasnt as bad but still it was worrying

Ah, an old classic. Blue’s Clues is a pretty good one too, and it’s original run (not the reboot) is quite similar to Mr. Rogers. Occasionally I’ll watch Blue’s Clues episodes as an adult for the nostalgia, and it’s not half bad.

Honestly feels like a US only problem. I live in another country and while theres still some brainrot like Skibidi, Rizz, and other stuff, kids are still pretty normal. Heck I've seen kids run around the supermarket and play with each other.
As an elementary school teacher I’m afraid to say that our next generation is doomed. I’ve just about given up on half these kids because they are being raised on RUclips where they learn things. I understand parents want kids to leave them alone, but to have them on their tablet whenever they have free time is unhealthy. Kids in first grade are unable to actively engage with others and it constantly leads to fights. I’ve been physically attacked by many of my younger students whenever I have to punish them accordingly after they get in a physical fight with another student and hurt another child. Their parents pretty much only do their parenting job when it comes to scolding them so the thought of them getting in trouble makes them act out further. I’ve been bitten, scratched, sometimes even stabbed with pens, pencils and scissors. I’m about ready to quit because I genuinely don’t think this next generation can be saved. You guys can comment how I’m inconsiderate to the younger generation as much as they want, but after two years of this I think it’s time for me to go to a new job where I don’t have to worry about my own students attacking me because they can’t handle the concept of a five minute time out.

Goes to show how the series impacted my generation, and how its small details like this I have remembered. After years of not touching the first 12 books I still have stored in a box after stopping with the 13th installment.
This makes it sad knowing that there is a movie adaptation of The Long Haul that tried to be "modern" and "hip". And pretty much embodies the very essence of "brainrot" being forced down into a series that works well without them

I seriously wouldn’t give any other content that I wasn’t used to a chance. This was when I was 10 back in 2015. I also don’t think there was as much of this content or talk about this content on a regular basis. Plus when everyone tries to outdo each other the content is just stupid stuff for views. Right now i'm 14, i'm a retro gamer having 8 consoles and more than 80 games, but i have a very good childhood, having friends playing with them, playing with my toys, playing with my sister and using my wii!!! But when i use yt, i watch some nee super mario bros wii videos, i've got a lot of fun but now i think i don't have the same hapiness... And the gen alpha kids.... They can't enjoy they're childhood and whe they grow up, they will be a very sad people and never understand the expirience of a true life!!!
As a big sister, I am worried for these children because my brother is only 8 yet he's swears at me like a teenager and the only thing he's does is watch his tablet.
Whenever I take it away because he won't listen he starts whining and my parents tell me to give it back.
Despite all of this, he cries when he has to do his work and he almosy failed the first and second grade because i had to do his work for him when I was in 3rd grade. He always gets in trouble at school and when I tell my parents that they should discipline him, they say "What do you expect me to do about?" Even though they're the ones who gave a 4 year old a tablet. They tell me to stop acting 21 to solve problems even though he has this attitude. They just let him have his tablet and act like a brat whole this kid isn't having a bright future. And it isn't even his fault. They just won't let me do anything. He is now a liar and someone who swears like a sailor. Now I don't even care if he whines or what my parents say because he should learn that he can't get everything he wants and crying won't give him what he wants. And he should do his work instead of me being forced to take time out of my day to help him just because he doesn't pay attention in class's and is always playing. He's always watching RUclips shorts and his attention span is destroyed. He's about to go to 4th grade and he still writes like a 1st grader and can't even do common addition subtraction or multiplication. I know as a person who's part of the early Gen alpha I think these kids can still be changed but only if we do something about these children. This is genuinely sad.

If he fails, he fails. Don’t do his work, do not help him with anything, make him think for himself. If he uses the tech to cheat then record it and show the teacher. They are responsible for the child’s success and if he fails it reflects poorly on them and the parents. If possible even record him swearing like a sailor and show his classmates. Nobody likes an asshat so if he is shunned for it then that could make him change.
If people knew how he treats you then logically he would treat them like that.
Depression and philosophical thinking can cure it just make sure they can get out of the depression 😅

I used to be a full time nanny and hated how often the parents would suggest to me that I simply give the children their iPads to make my job easier...I have always found the "content" targeted towards children extremely disturbing the past decade or so. It's becoming more and more normalized as well. I recently went to a festival, and there was a children's section of the fair that had toys, kid rides, etc. You know what kind of plushies they had hanging everywhere? Huggy Wuggy...from the horror game Poppy Playtime! There were several kids running around with Huggy Wuggy toys as well. My partner and I kept saying "Why is this being sold to children? Why would they be watching/playing that?"
I also went to a fair and saw the same thing! It’s nuts, Honestly. I miss when I used to get beanie babies from the fair. 😢

We are slowly living in a dystopia. Parents have to realize that they’re to blame and not what’s on the internet and not rely on a iPad as a babysitter. I grew up in the 2010s and only had an iphone and nintendo consoles but I still went outside, rode bikes and scooters, played sports like soccer/futbol played with plushies, hanged out with friends, and watched non brain rot stuff like Spongebob or Arthur.

As a 12 year old, the internet taught me way too many things I shouldn't know, has completely ruined me, I have serious mental health issues and I'm extremely burnt out all of the time . Same age here, I was never allowed tiktok and I think that was what saved me from huge amounts of brainrot. Unfortunately I have RUclips and because I am surrounded by all the brainrot kids that grew up with tiktok I agree with having more mental issues from the internet. When I take a break from the Internet I do feel more calm. But oh well... This is what everyone else in my generation is dealing with so I guess I should be use to it.

i’m 11 and its stressful to fit into school and society aswell. everyone in my school has insta, snapchat, discord, tiktok, etc. and i have none of them and i always get guilt tripped and felt bad for because of that. i still watch my comfort shows that my dead uncle watched before he died like ed, edd, and eddy, dexters laboratory, blues clues, and invader zim. i always find skibidi toilet, cocomelon, and multiple things out there to hurt my brain, and it feels so icky to the point i feel sick. the internet might be a good place, but being exposed to gore at the ripe young age of 6 is just horrible. i take breaks every now and then, go to places, get smoothies, etc. im trying to balance my life and my internet life.
As a very, VERY early gen alpha kid (barely a teenager, I know) I think I have to agree on this. I'm in a split class (grade 7 and 8) and I've noticed a lot of this myself, all the kids in the year before me taking any and every chance to check social media. The girls in particular also seem to fall into the Instagram rabbit hole of obsessive beauty and fashion, to the point where the majority of their insults are specifically about every minor detail about your appearance. The only way I got them to stop this was by dressing more and more different from the norm until they got so fed up with me they stopped insulting me all-together, which just goes to show how desperate they are for attention nowadays as well, particularly the instant gratification of someone reacting to whatever they say.

I have a little sister. She’s 8. I was so worried she got the “brainrot” since she uses RUclips, so as a concerned older sister, I asked. I was so relieved she stuck to the stuff I hoped she did, like what “normal” kids would watch. Drawing/art, animal videos, etc. I specifically asked about skibidi toilet, TADC, lankybox, and all of them. She said they were boring and dumb. Now, she still has gen alpha stereotypes, like she plays Fortnite for example. (I think a lot of gen z is also guilty of that too. I know I am.) and I’m so grateful my parents don’t give her social media other than RUclips since I’ve been on TikTok before and my gosh my attention span was not doing well. My little sister is my best friend, my other half. Which is why I was so concerned for her. But she wasn’t completely unaffected by the “brainrot” with gen alpha classmates, she is kind of exposed to it. She knows things that 8 year old me didn’t. Which scares me. But luckily she still has an attention span, plays with toys, goes outside, and has a childhood.
I realized though that some of gen z is also affected by that content. I’m 13, and surrounded by gen z at school. So I have a front row seat to the affect it has on not just gen alpha. Most of the talk about skibidi toilet, coco melon, and such is just joking and ironic. But I realized that the attention span was affected too. And the behavior of my classmates is really aggravating. Yes, I know that middle schoolers will try and be the biggest menace or tough guy but I didn’t realize it would be this bad. But then, the worst kid has 0 internet access too.
I still play with toys with my sister. And honestly it is so fun. The stories you can create are so amazing. And I realized that a lot of kids even my sister’s age don’t play with toys which kind of saddened me. Not just toys, they just don’t play in general. Again, I can never be grateful enough my sister wasn’t as affected by this stuff. I really am.
When or if I become a parent I won’t give my children internet access until I feel they are ready. Maybe a few video games I grew up with like Minecraft, maybe Roblox. But I would also still see if they are ready. I want to give my children a better childhood than I had. Now, I love my parents, and feel bad blaming them for the way my childhood did turn out, but nobody is perfect. And you really realize adults aren’t what little you thinks they are and it kinda sucks to realize that. And honestly I forgive my parents for early internet access. They gave me the internet at around 5-6 and couldn’t take it away since I was so engrossed in it. When they took my games away I would lose it. Basically like a less severe skibidi tantrum. My sister got it even earlier since I already had it. And I realize that my parents gave me better than what they had, my mother tells me about the internet she had as a teenager and I’m disturbed by it and glad I didn’t grow up on what she did as a teen and instead grew up on the Minecraft and animal jam side of the internet.
My little sister and I only really bring up the gen alpha stuff when we joke, but it’s funny how my little sister’s peers like it un ironically.

I'm older gen Z. I'm 19. I'll turn 20 soon. My girlfriend wants kids, I definitely do too. Eventually, when we do mange to have kids, there will be no iPads, no phones, only a PS2 with guitar hero. Toys, and a bunch of outdoor activities will be the best, but indoor activities are important, because we get huge storms and 100° heat in the summer sometimes. I can't wait to have my kid watch VHS tapes with me and make mudpies.

To all people who are planning to have kids, please don’t give tablets to your kids and let them have a limited time screen. Let them watch TV cartoon that is REALLY suitable for kids, give them toys, make them read a book, take them outside like some amusement park or camping, let them learn normal stuff, then give them internet access when they’re old enough. That’s the best way to become a parent. Also, don’t let your kids be spoiled. Make them learn how to control themselves.

Putting the piano version of "Cancer" over the speech about needing parents got me. Parents are the LARGEST and most likely the most important part in a child's development. I'm not a parent, but an uncle and I try to involve myself in anything I can that my nieces' and nephews' are doing. Not as a helicopter but to teach them to ask questions, solve problems, let them know that if something goes wrong it isn't the end of the world and that there is always a solution to some point. See, they don't have a very good father and children NEED that bulwark of unconditional love and wisdom even if I don't know the answer. BE involved. Teach them when they don't know because they soak up EVERYTHING like a sponge, good and bad.
the moment i realized it was "cancer" it really got my emotions going. and i realized how much our next generation has lost in terms of childhood.
To all parents, or future parents : talk to your kids, read to your kids, get them interested in every subject they show interest, teach them to be curious and ask questions, don’t let them watch screens unsupervised, pick and pre-watch the content you allow them to watch.
And let them explore, play outside and get bored ! Getting bored is crucial so they can find/create activities on their own !

I warned my mom not to buy her an I-Pad, but she did it anyway and it honestly hurts me to see how my cousin who I watched grow in her youngest years not even be able to watch a movie anymore without going on that I-Pad instead. I feel incredibly guilty for just standing by despite having all this knowledge on how harmful the shit that kids are having pushed on them online is. I think that this video perfectly summarises the situation at hand, and I honestly also hope that these kids aren't too far gone, especially because it would break my heart completely to see the children around me, such as my afforementioned cousin, lose touch with reality and become no more than an idle consumer of brainrot. student teacher here, i have an internship at a school for kids age 5-14 (school system works differently here) and i am actually shocked by how different most gen Alpha kids act. they have very little remorse and respect for teachers or kids older than them and they view (mild) violence such as hitting and kicking as ‘normal’ it’s absolutely absurd. also most kids struggle with writing and reading nowadays.

I'm 11 and never watch this kind of weird stuff. I like space and drawing, and history. Unfortunately I can't say the same for other kids my age. When I was in 5th grade my entire class and my teacher had to ask me for help identifying different country's flags because apparently I was the only one in my class(including my teacher)who knew the world's flags. I don't belive they're dumb but I agree with you that covid has taken a toll on all of us. Especially kids.
