Looking at some of the other puncture tests that people have done on LFP batteries, I wouldn't be surprised if the smoke coming out of it if flammable but the battery isn't getting hot enough to ignite it.
I also use an e-bike with a LiFePO4 battery. After watching a video about Thermal Runaway using Lithium batteries, I came to your channel to clarify the impact to this battery type in case of impact or puncture. Thank You... mind set at ease.

Very useful and informative video. Side note, the fumes from the electrolyte is very toxic, don't breath it. Since the chemistry does not produce its own oxygen it requires an external source to ignite, but it will burn. Due to the flat voltage curve, the cycle life and the better safety, LFP is usually the best choice. Lithium Titanate is also a good choice, but the voltage curve makes it harder to work with. I am very appreciative of your video to help your audience make a more informed decision about battery chemistry, you reach a large audience, so it really helps. BTW, happy birthday!
At least some of the electrolytes are fluorinated organic compounds. Inhaling the smoke from a burning battery could create hydrofluoric acid inside one's lungs when the decomposition products react with the water on mucous membranes. Needless to say this is extremely bad when even modest concentrations are reached.
@@wombatillo yeah and the widespread opinion i gleaned from my time on the ebikes discord (a few folks there make their own DIY batteries for their DIY ebikes) is that although LFP is much safer when it comes to thermal runaway and fire hazard type events, you actually seem to get more smoke come out of them, so potentially more toxic HF acid. so on that level they'd be no less lethal if you kept them in your living space if it's at all cramped than the more explosive battery chemistries. whereas LTO videos i've watched seem to suggest that the only respiratory hazards that get emitted when things go wrong at CO2, hydrogen and trace amounts of CO. but i don't know how rigorous their testing setup for verifying that was since you can only show so much in a video, so all i saw was the cells getting torture tested without going crazy or on fire or anything. i dont know what kind of electrolyte the LTO cells use either, or even if it's the same for all LTO batteries
@@doooofus basically you need to test every battery from a hundred to analyze how hazardous are the fumes. (even the same batteries from the same manufacturer might change chemistry rapidly because the rate of development is very fast in this industry)

Hi Will, happy birthday. I saw at 1:33 the dirt at the bottom end on your panels in the background. You can install little plastic clamps for solar panels so when its rains the water flows of the panels. Therefore less dirt stayes on the panel when the water dries.
It would be interesting to see if you took two of those LiPO batteries and drilled through one while having an adjoining battery next to it to see if the heat given off during its combustion process would somehow trigger a reaction in the second battery that was not drilled through sort of like puncturing it when it's still in its stack.
Thanks for doing this, this result is what I had heard from other people doing a puncture test, but I haven't actually watched a video of someone doing this.

Now that the smoke has cleared, do you consider EcoFlow, Jackery and older Bluetti portable power stations based on NMC batteries to be a fire hazard? A video to break this down would be great for those of us who store these units at home in case of a grid power outage and want to stay within a reasonable fire risk tolerance.

I have multiple different battery sources just like it probably everyone else but I have to transitioned over to Lifepo4 wherever I can
Happy Birthday Will! btw, my battery test scenario is that I live in a rural area and if a stray bullet goes into the side of a battery module. Not a problem if I have LiFePO4 cells.

Thanks for summing it up...... Will you put a load on the batteries while drilling through them. So like run a heat gun off the batteries while drilling through them.
