And much of the technological innovation attributed to capitalism is actually the product of state investment (marianamazzucato.com/entrepreneurial-state/ ), including for the iPhones referenced above: the GPS, tiny circuitry, touch-screen display, the internet itself - all the direct result of government R&D. “If you back away from the federal government and say, ‘What has it done for us over the last century?’, one of the things it has done has been an engine for innovation. People don’t like to think this. They think that the private sector is the vital innovator, but in fact, most of the basic science that lies at the bottom of advances in medicine and industry starts with government research. Because industry has no interest in paying for things that aren’t going to yield a return for 30 years. So you don’t get the internet, vaccines for AIDS, one thing after another. And Trump has sought to zero out unbelievably successful R&D operations. So for the moment it will look like, ‘Oh, they cut government. Great, it’s cheaper’. Every time I see Thomas Sowell, I feel grief for not knowing him until recently and he's 90! I feel an urgent need to collect everything he's written and said. I wish I could collect "him" and keep him forever.
Most teenagers in NYC, being poor, are at the same understanding as Sowell was when he was 16. It’s a never ending story.
As long as we have capitalism we will have poverty and war.

Thomas Sowell, the first front-line swamp killer.
Thomas Sowell is the man. For more great clips of him, watch the series "Free to Choose" by Milton Friedman. He is a guest debater on a few of the shows and whomps some serious ass on it.

I have read many of Dr Sowell's books and really enjoy his explanations based on the data.

Imagine if this GREAT man was the real 1st black president.
He would’ve been silenced in an instant because he doesn’t serve the narrative
@MrAtroncoso
No, Thomas Sowell would come with indisputable data to disprove the narrative!
Plus he doesn't suffer fools lightly.

How to cure Marxism: Teach kids to delineate between reality and fantasy. Should those efforts fail, toss them into the real world so they can see for themselves. Some basic morals would be good too. Not to mention that we have a severe distortion of the word "selfishness" and we now have many people who call you selfish for not arbitrarily giving up everything that is demanded from you by people who had no right to any of it in the first place and somehow THEY are not the selfish ones.
Bill Melater I’m pretty sure Sowell himself said something like this regarding “greed”. Greed is wanting to keep what you have worked for, or is it greed to demand those hand over what they have worked for. Something like that!
How to cure marxism: Place a sequence of tests to a group of children about mathematics and english... If every children make an A, every children receive $100... If half children make an A, every children receive $10... If a quarter of children make an A, every children receive $1... If not even a quarter of children make an A, no children receive money... At start, some children will make that extra effort (in order to receive $100)... But at the second test, they know it's impossible to make $100 (because of others)... So they won't make that same effort again (studying), as the first time... And so on... If benefits from hard working are shared among people who don't need to work, at the end, no one will care about working...
@Pierre Holthuis "in socialism you're paid to the quantity and quality of your labor"... oh... Such a perfect system... yes "your point that people wouldn't get as much money if someone else doesn't work is a fantasy"... Ok... That was never my point... it's a fantasy... Indeed...
@Pierre Holthuis perhaps, you mean that my point was that no one need to work... If I believe that I'm rich, it's because I am... Of course...
@Pierre Holthuis oh... I'm not the best english speaker... forgive me if I sound too aggressive... I need to address a better way of expressing myself...
That is a how honest intellectual looks like.

Plenty of abolitionists probably wore cotton clothes and smoked tobacco too. Does that mean they shouldn’t have despised slavery?
But the price that’s going to be paid for that isn’t measurable, and will be paid in 30 or 40 years; it’s the price of not having found out things we might’ve, like, for example, a solution to climate change.”

“The centralized state power, with its ubiquitous standing army, police, bureaucracy, and judiciary originates from the days of absolute monarchy. Its development remains clogged by all manner of medieval rubbish. The government, placed under parliamentary control - that is, under the direct control of the propertied classes - became a hotbed of huge national debts and crushing taxes, a public force organized for societal enslavement, an engine of elite despotism. The government makes its own rules
Socialism, Marxism (Lenin, Marx, Engels, Trotsky) rely on the willful ignorance of human nature, the desire for self preservation, and development over life. At least under capitalism, there is an opportunity to not directly involve state agents in your benign affairs. All other forms of national economic arrangement devolve into totalitarianism faster than capitalism. The best forms of government are the ones which give the mass private equity holders the most trouble and pain as they gobble up everything. That process is always inevitable but, the one thing that can be done is to make it take longer.
