The thing is, the interviewer touched on the problem in his question. It's the fact that we arbitrarily decided that everyone needed a degree for jobs that you absolutely teach people with HS diplomas to do. Basically, the problem wasn't B. It was that you created A in the first place, which then gave birth to B. It's kind of typical. With the Left, A is never the problem. In fact, they created A with the purest of intentions. And they'll certainly not take any blame for the fact that it caused B, C and D, which we also now have to deal with.
Also consider; if you are giving out college degrees to people to learn to do things that people with High School diplomas can do, how bright can these individuals be? Aren’t you kinda taking advantage of these people by charging them to get a pretty valueless imprimaturs to get a job….
@@chrisfleischman3371 Intelligent or not, if the field they want to get into requires a college degree to apply, you're kind of stuck having to go to college. It's not so much the colleges' fault in this case. I graduated from high school in 1988. I have a couple of aunts who are about a half generation older who just got jobs at utilities/co-ops out of high school, and were running them, making fairly "obscene" salaries for the area, by the time they hit 40. I figure I missed THAT kind of opportunity landscape by about 8 years. But as for accountability, I think we sometimes also forget that a lot of us just grew up in the last few decades of the 20th century believing that college was the default next step, if you could swing it. None of my friends and I ever really thought of doing anything else after high school, save for joining the military. And most of those people did it so it would pay for college.
Lollll of course all the idiots got boners when he said that. Think a little deeper about what he’s really saying or better yet what he’s missing. It’s not about everyone getting ahead, it’s about everyone having an opportunity to get ahead. Sowell sold himself out to PASS in white conservative academia because they love tokens spouting their disproven economic and social theories. In the 1950s through 1995 it was easier to sell out to white conservatives like Sowell rather than stand on your own two feet. Clarence Thomas did it. Sowell's work has been disproven with 50 years of data and he is considered a retired hack at this point.
What struck me like a slap in the face, was the fact that Thomas Sowell was talking about sex education without parental consent in the early 1990s. So prescient. So astute and ahead of his time. That is one of our number one topics today in 2022 and beyond.

I don’t know how he remains so patient with this interviewer, the guy has such a fixed worldview that he can’t adjust his thinking enough to understand the problem, stuck within a paradigm and so unable to recognise that his paradigm is itself part of the problem.
It’s about effectiveness. You can get more satisfaction, attention and even reward with more dramatic and energetic replies. However being understated and succinct is more likely to reach hostile or neutral listeners. Also it’s just emotional intelligence.
Thomas Sowell: "They wanted to be in ivy covered buildings for 4 years and get more money when they graduated and have a good time while they are there." I was in a 4 year university in the 1970s and this became abundantly clear to me the first year. For many students, the number 1 priority was to have a good time. And for male students at that time, to get a draft deferment. Getting drafted meant you might end up in Vietnam.
If 1 person stands up he can se the game better, but if they all stand nobody sees the game better. The levels of wisdom and intellect he has is unmatched
Yes but what happens to the people who remain seated while everyone else stands up? The people who stand at least have a chance to see the game but those who remain seated have no chance of seeing anything. Following this analogy, the only way for everyone to see the game, standing or not, would be to spread the seating. How does this translate to real life? It means reducing the population. I'm not saying genocide or anything so extreme, but perhaps something like incentivizing a reduced birth rate. The higher the population, the lower the individual value. If, for example, I need landscaping done, if there's only one landscaper available, then I would be at their mercy. I would have to pay whatever they ask. However, if there's a hundred landscapers to choose from, then that leverage is gone and the job goes to the lowest bidder. The less people, the more value those people possess
@@cwdgamedev1017 everyone can’t stand up and everyone can’t see the game it just doesn’t work like that, humans are all unique and different, some smarter and some dumber, and to spread the seating so everyone can see will disincentivizes people from standing up. TS is right. We in Europe have tuition free universities. Now that almost everyone went / goes to university the employment line hasn’t changed. People with a university degree do the job that people used to do with a apprenticeship. Living standards haven’t gone up in about 25 years. Everyone knows but we like to live a societal lie. Thanks TS.
Couldn't agree more. We have done and are doing the same thing here in the US: local colleges and universities "make deals" with surrounding businesses for the most inane and unnecessary "certifications" costing students tens of thousands of dollars just to earn entry-level wages. And without the certifications, you are not employable. I know; I've taught at such places.
But the education levels in Europe, from young age to early adulthood, are much higher on average than in US. Literacy in US is shocking too. I think having a more educated society is a good thing. As Peterson says, the universities are our most cherished institutions, not because of the piece of paper you receive after, but the social and intellectual experiences they foster. I'm not sure why you conflated living standards with university tuition. In the UK we have had conservative governance for 12+ years, including the raising of tuition fee. Our living standards began falling for the first time since victorian times around 3 years ago. Are the two related? I doubt it. But either way it's clear the outcome is more nuanced than your statement implies.

It’s about people not being left behind due to factors out of their control, like socioeconomics, race, etc. This is so fundamental, which is why Sowell is either pretending to be this ideologically opposed to economic justice or he is just dumb as a brick.
Contrary to what people in the comments are saying, I find the professor is cordial and gives good arguments, and is a good listener. This must have been from a long time ago because liberals don't listen so well today.

No. That was just something conservatives were upset about then. It goes in cycles. That's how they manipulate you. Just playing the greatest hits to keep you all angry and scared.

Well, that was going on big time back then, so while I believe Sowell is a genius, he wasn't exactly prescient in this case. .
One of the many crimes occurring in higher education is the fact I got a graduate degree in business and economics without coming across Sowell once.
The irony is, many would attribute that to "racism" to imply its because he is a black academic. Contrary to the reality
That's because he isn't a very good economist. Which is why he moved into cultural commentary to get attention.

Alarming that you would view this type of discussion as a win/lose scenario. The idea isn't to win. The idea is to listen to one another in hopes that through discussion both parties can arrive at a more complete undstanding of the truth. Thomas Sowell: "They wanted to be in ivy covered buildings for 4 years and get more money when they graduated and have a good time while they are there."
I was in a 4 year university in the 1970s and this became abundantly clear to me the first year.

I laughed out loud because it is so simple and so truthful.
I doubt it.
