Wow. It's so sad that Flint isn't like that anymore. I wish it was still that clean and busy! All those stores are closed and empty now.

Damn near unrecognizable to what it is today. I wish older folks understood what it’s like to try to prosper nowadays...

I was not even born in Flint yet until 1965! OMG! Flint looked so prehistoric in the 50's!

Flint Michigan with a clean water supply and incentive to product and manufacture goods can be once again a nice city. It just needs to be rebuilt. Flint is a boom town waiting to happen-

+Ron Angell At least much of the infrastructure is still there, unlike the burned-out and thoroughly demolished cities of Gary, IN or East St. Louis, IL . . . still, what 21st-century industries employing thousands of people are relocating to cold climates like Michigan? Our manufacturing economy has been moved offshore where it will likely remain.

Look at how much Brooklyn has been gentrified, or even Detroit to some extent. Of course it can happen in Flint.

Judging by the designs of the cars, I'm guessing this was some time after the tornado.

I love home movies from this era. As I would expect, nearly every car is from GM.

I grew up 6 blocks from downtown Flint back in the 1940s, so this video brought back fond memories. But in response to Tyler Hammock: It was good pay and benefits won by unionism that put money in the pockets of workers who, in turn, were able to support the businesses that allowed Flint to flourish as a vibrant, bustling city. And -- how do you explain the fact that GM made record profits during that era?
Granted, while expansion of the suburbs and shopping malls certainly contributed, Flint's economic woes are mostly the result of economic globalization -- created and sustained by the wealthy elite and the politicians (mostly Republicans, and too many Democrats) who share the same extreme free-market ideology. Outsourcing jobs for cheap labor and destroying unionism are important parts of their policies. This caused the downfall of our nation's manufacturing base. This is what has destroyed what was once a joyful and prosperous Flint. This is the real "raping of the city of Flint." Welcome to the-race-to-the-bottom, folks!
Mr. Hammock should get his head out of his ass and find something else to do in his spare time besides watching Fox "News" and listening to Russ Limbaugh.

I lived in a house on the corner of 9th Ave. and Mason St. which is no longer there. It got burned down by crack users back in the 80s. I have so many good memories growing up in Flint but things started to change starting with the riots following the assassination of MLK and everything you mentioned. Sadly, I don't see any chance of Flint ever returning to those glory days in our lifetime.

Just a thought - what would happen if cereal giant Kellogg's decided on a second giant manufacturing plant in Flint along with an existing one in Battle Creek? The plant in Flint would be on the site of the former GM Buick City complex making Corn Flakes, Special K, Rice Krispies, Raisin Bran and Pop Tarts. The plant in Battle Creek would be making kids cereals like Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes and Sugar Smacks. How good can that be? Also cereal giant Post making waves in Flint? Wish the food industry especially cereals for breakfast would wake up and take a serious look at Flint.

You Are Right Ron! Soon it will be 62 years Since I was Born in Flint! I am Proud that I was Born in this Great American City that on this Date 75 years ago, G.M. President and U.A.W President(Also Born in Flint) went along with Ford and Chrysler, Presidents(From Detroit) went to Washington, D.C. To Meet with FDR, "Asking How They could Help, after what Happened on December, 7th at Pearl Harbor! May God Bless the Good People of Flint and Detroit, whose Industrial Might Helped Us Win World War 2, From a VERY Determined Enemy! The Axis Powers Tried their best to find some way of Getting at our Industrial Base. I still will always Buy an American Made Car. Even in the 1960s, (Unsafe at Any Speed) Ruined a Car ahead of its time 1963 Chevrolet Corvair, that was Beating Imports it was so well made. Result, Porshe stole the technology so VW Beetle and Porshe import sales to U.S.A. (Saw that on "Wheeler Dealers") would continue strong without competition, Many Lost jobs in Flint, Over that. Then the Japanese "Called Us G.M. Auto workers, "Industrail Aristocats" in the Late 70s and early 80s. All they know how to do was copy our work! Look at the first Lexus in 1993, Exact Copy of the Buick Park Ave. We all worked so hard on that, too! What happened is the Japanese bought Amway Kits learning how to market, underhandly, "saying our Cars were No Good". May god Bless the Good People of Flint. I was Just there Summer 2015, I know G.M. is opening a New plant, Flint is Starting to Look Pretty Nice, again. It made me feel sad in 2008, when Abc News anchor Cried, (when entire U.S.A economy was flat), Said, "Looks Like that Saying, "Whats Good for G.M. is Good for U.S.A., is TRUE after All"! May God Bless Everyone. Yes I'm Praying that we get our Industrial base back, too! May Everyone in Michgan and the U.S.A. Have a Great Christmas!

Cincinnati looks like this now in 2023. The money stayed there somehow. Its still has poverty. But homes are in good condition. I wonder what really caused the collapse. Im sure there never was too many homes in usa. So im think landlords and renting have ruined these cities. With the homes buyers.
