For anyone curios as to what they are doing, tom is being "Punched in" in each take at a certain point in the riff by the engineer, meaning he can play certain parts of the riff over and over again until the whole section is completely tight. For instance, he mentions certain "pull offs" sounding weak or off time, which is what he points at on the screen at 3:20 ish and at 5:15 [sound is displayed as waveforms in the program pro tools and you can often see transients, or "audio spikes" and if they are on time with other tracks such as the kick drum or the project "grid"] . Then once one full rhythm track has been done for the riff, he can work on the second rhythm track. These are then panned left and right to give a wide sound, known as double tracking. Some artists "quad track", meaning four of the same guitar part usually panned 2 left, 2 right for some extra heft, but with busier riffs this can get messy. The same process happens with vocals and often drums [although some drummers like playing lots of full takes to be edited together after] People like joey sturgis take this process to the extreme to get that ultra modern overproduced metal sound, even editing the raw DI tracks straight out of the guitar, before going into the amplifier to get several ultra tight takes
There is some footage of Tom doing this in the documentary for LF/LT where you can see the screen. I believe he double takes both guitar parts in that album.
Yeah often times the strongest rhythm player will just end up recording all the rhythm for the whole album, depending on the other members. Some lead guitarists are fine with that and are happy to just play lead parts and solos and let the rhythm guy track it all.
This is incredible, but sucks cause he's no longer with us. His ear for detail combined with yours was a perfect combo. Thanks for this amazing insight in to how happy he was during this time
I would so love to see more of these of you have/are willing to share them. No worries if not, thanks for sharing this footage at least, a real privilege to see tom and yourself in your element working so damn hard to achieve what is one of the greatest records of our time ❤️
Fuck I miss Tom soo much. I come back to this video every year and I'm instantly reminded how this world was a little better for Tom having been in it with the music he gave and the love and care he clearly had for those around him. RIP man
This is one of those riffs I would love to hear for 10 minutes straight like Gojira did with Where dragons dwell live... It's in my eyes on of the best musical sections ever..the brutal riff, devastating drums and the beautiful synth on the background
Thanks for uploading this man. Never had a chance to meet Tom, but he'll always be an inspiration to my playing. Amazing work on engineering this album; it's sonically perfect. Cheers.
Henrik awesome to post this as it allows people to see all of Tom's emotions even though everytime he just cracks jokes thank you dude. live forever Tom
it's so wonderful to watch the brilliance pour out of him like that. honestly a great musician & this world is bleaker without him. I'm going to miss his talents in Architects but I know the lads are going to do a wonderful job making sure they put out music that would make him proud.
He looked so proud and happy about creating the song. But despite all that you can tell that he was obviously sick here, he lose weight here and he was kinda pale. But despite all that he still finished the whole album. Atleast he died doing what he loved.
I wish I would have had the chance to meet this dude. Been a fan for years… just now seeing this. Makes me sad and happy to see him gone not long after this, but during this… so happy to see him having fun and killing it. Cancer is the worst. Tom, thank you for starting one of my favorite bands ever. And also, thank you for providing us with one of the best albums ever sir. You did an amazing job on this one. 100% On behalf of fans all over… thank you all for making such beautiful sounds.
Just for the people who can't hear the difference in each take - remember they're quad tracking the guitars so the difference in the left/right panned tracks would be far more obvious in the studio than what we're listening to!
The best thing is seein him smile here. The love he feels for the music, as well as being the creator of possibly the best Metal Core album ever created. AOGHAU is Tom Searle.
Funny guy he was and an amazing artist. Sad he's gone now, truly does make me sad. He loved life so much and was always happy even through his pain. I'm curious why are the ones who love life and want to be here tooken away. But the ones who hate life stick around. Not 100% of the time but in this case yes.
1:52 he's not even looking at the guitar, like, this guy's really practiced hard, now it's second nature to play this song. That is a mark of a good musician.
I am just now discovering Architecs and finding out Tom died makes me sad but I am so excited to discover all his passion art, creativity hes given the world through music. Rest in Piece Tom hope to see you shred one day
People on f$# Facebook crying because they dont wanna get out of bed on Monday.. This legend..playing and working and giving his soul for this, while being very ill... and only being positive and smiling... absolutely amazing
has to be extremely precise and on time 100%. Literally . Tom was a perfectionist too so obviously he was more than willing to give it hundreds of takes till it sounded absolutely perfect
+macbeth642 and it became the most beautiful album musically they released ever. I will always believe this album will be their peak album. Holds a special place in my heart.
Aleph Bot he's from a band called architects (formerly architects U.K) and the riff is from a song called A match made in heaven, from their newest album all our gods have abandoned us. It's a masterpiece man.
Tom, as much ad I know you won't see this, as much as I know saying this won't change a thing.... You music lives on. Architects have always been a staple in metalcore music, and I cant say I've been more of a fan of any band than them. Tom (like ATB's late guitarist) were lost too soon. Major influences, major losses. Rest easy Tom.
I know someone already posted it below, but can I get an ELI5 (explain like I'm 5) here? I know Tom is trying to get the guitar part "right" but it all sounds...great to me?
He's fixing notes that he hasn't hit perfectly or don't hit exactly on the beat. It might sound fine listening like that but if he kept it in the album, you would probably notice it eventually after listening to the album over and over and there is no going back once the album is released. Not sure if that answers your question. Hopefully it does!
I think they're were also layering the tracks, it probably had like 4 guitar tracks on the same riff, thats why so much repetition, you have to record the same riff, 4 times, in this case he was playing like 1/3 of the riff lots of times, in which they would separate 4 or so layers of the rec choosen ones
Science Fiction why do you love their song so much ? Because of their attention to detail and Tom's perfectionism, he wanted his riffs to be perfect, in perfect synchronization
Old comment I know but some baritone 6 strings play as low as 7 or even 8 strings! It's not about the number of strings but it's about the string thickness and the guitar's scale length
A testament to how good that riff is as well, I basically just listened to it for 11 minutes on repeat and it's still killer . RIP Tom
Ringlen I won't listen to that song the same way ever again.
First time I heard it it got stuck in my head for a week, no kidding.
Top comment
Truly.
You are right!, that's a killer riff, i love it!
What always amazed me with was how this incredibly heavy, aggressive music could come from such a softly spoken, nice dude.
That's the case for most metal bands I've seen tbh.
You ever hold something in with no other way to express it
He was fighting for every second of his life at that point, its no wonder that everything is as it is on that album and it still holds up to this day.
oh Tom... Rest in peace brother
"I fucked up... I know that's unbelievable to hear but, I did" 😂 I miss you tom.
i could listen this riff forever. tom was a genius.

MervDesign1987 All the rhythm guitars on the album were quad tracked, not double tracked.
Ah, yes. You are right. Just listened back - I must not have been listening properly last time I watched it. Thanks for rectifying.
Yes, we the clip ends we switch to the other two amps and do it all again (quad-tracking)
Tom was such a legend, I come back to this video every once in a few months and every time I'm blown away. Rest In Peace Tom, you are dearly missed 🤍
Legend!
This is incredible, but sucks cause he's no longer with us. His ear for detail combined with yours was a perfect combo. Thanks for this amazing insight in to how happy he was during this time
RIP Tom, and Tom's index finger
My admiration for Tom just keeps growing. Dude was a perfect example of what it is to be a musician.
Thank you so much for uploading man!

Such an enlightened guy but at the same time so good natured and funny. Sad he's gone but also grateful he was able to share with us what he did. RIP.
Thanks for sharing this Henrik! Amazing to see the master lay down some awesome takes.
I never met him but I feel like I knew him through his music. So much so that I am sometime brought to tears listening to there music. Rip Tom Searle
Josh Grimm Feel the same way man.
The music was his way of meeting us all, regardless of him still being with us or not :)
Totally agree. Another one gone way too soon
Josh Grimm he poured his heart into every note. We lost yet another amazing musician way too soon.
You and Tom got along fucking perfectly, I suppose you could call it a match made in heaven

This is why this song is such a masterpiece because of Tom's attention to detail haha
rest in peace dear friend, you give us more than you imagined
damn ninjas cutting onions...
This is what I've been dying to see for months, anymore songs that you have him on video tracking?
tom had such a nice smile, rest in peace man :(

This man was a true musician. Every little detail had to be exactly perfect. He heard things nobody else could.
Extremely interesting to see behind the scenes, the process of creating this track.
I must oxygenate my joint! hahaha great video of a true legend! :)

NathanDrums what album/song is this? Sorry but I'm not actually familiar with Tom (RIP) and what band he was from, but this sounds tight
Aleph Bot he's from a band called architects (formerly architects U.K) and the riff is from a song called A match made in heaven, from their newest album all our gods have abandoned us. It's a masterpiece man.

@@jayburriswayne5403 It's a very negative impact on the industry. Why produce music and not be supported for it by your fans.
its quad tracked so it kinda needs that much attention

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
which gauge of strings did Tom used for this tuning?
Alex Silvan he used 70-40-30-22-15-11 on a 27"inch scale.
NickYDGn thanks,brother!
How did you get this information?
MRTNJRMS i went through toms twitter.
On a few occasions it's a 72 :)
I miss you a lot :(
Yes.
The question I ask is - how is he playing so low with only a 6 string?
Attila FTW! Baritone scale fretboard. 27".
Even before he used baritone Mayones guitars, he just used heavier gauge strings.
Ahh okay then, thanks guys
Baritone tuned F#, F#, B, E, G#, C#. Basically, tune to drop B and then tune that low B down to F#. I would advise thick strings.
Old comment I know but some baritone 6 strings play as low as 7 or even 8 strings! It's not about the number of strings but it's about the string thickness and the guitar's scale length
I creased at 2:10!
pls upload more if you have any
11.11 brothers and sisters
What was Toms last name?
WakeeWakee Searle.
