100% Risen 1 I really enjoy how end game melee combat feels different from melee combat at the start of the game. Also letting the player choose which attacks are strong attacks at their discretion was a brilliant idea!
LOVED Risen 1 I really hope someone makes an game inspired by it someday. There's such a sturdy foundation for a great game there, it just needs some tweaking!
You forgot to mention or didn't knew about it, but in R1 you can also go to town in the first place, then join a faction, which is a third option to play this game. You can either go to monastery or bandit camp depending on who you worked with. If you choose between two factions before going to the city you are send to help the faction of your choosing reclaim the grip on a town, but going there first gives you a choice
Risen 1 is a pure gem especially today on pc since the major graphic and stability update, I discovered and finished it some month ago, better late than never and I recommended it. Other Risen are a "meh", still not bad games, but they really not value the time you'll spend (I completly rushed the 3rd and found the 2nd one a bit better but still not so atmospheric and addictive than the first). BTW nice retrospective ;) Time to try the Gothic trillogy now
To me the 3rd was really bad, I hated it. As a game it was probably better than the 2nd, but how disconnected it felt story wise was a big issue to me. The 2nd game was ok, I don't liked how it forced the pirate theme personally, but it tried to be more story focused, your unnamed hero got a very specific look instead of generic guy #999. If it would ended properly, It would be fine, but it rather just cut the story short and the third game is felt absolutely disconnected, felt more like an asset flip fron Risen 2 really. Howewer the first Risen is really a hidden gem, also probably the biggest jank:D
There's also a huge optimization issue on the 3 (running at around 30fps on high-med config today wtf ahah). The 2nd was at a distance from the first but honestly as a basic "pirate fantasy-rpg" game, we can appreciate it (remind me a bit of Sea Dogs and Pirate of the Caribrean). I liked the music, the Caribbean atmosphere, there is a coherence in the universe with the inquisition, the colonies, the natives etc. even the Titans of the first. But the 3 is a pure joke x)@@Pmurder3
I love Risen 2. The sword combat actually was nuanced but janky as heck, though. You had to learn riposte and deflect, which added new mechanics and would reward you for timing your attack just right, making you feel like a swashbuckler against humanoid enemies. I had a lot of fun with the voodoo magic, too; Using It to create chaos and diversions to help me steal things highly secured. Making people fight each other was a real blast.
Ah yes Gothic 3 I have fond memories of npc characters not being where they were supposed to be. I'll also never forget how I attacked an orc in a cave, there was a crevice between us and he ran out of the cave. I forgot all about it until later a line of orcs came at me, killed them but more orcs started appearing in a huge line and when I went north I discovered there were almost no orcs left because they had all joined the conga line of death.
26:35 There are specific attacks that deal more damage. For the basic three attack combo it's the last one, with the "jump" animation. If you upgrade your combat skills then the sideways ones also deal more damage, but the basic attacks always deal the "normal" amount
Really wish there were more games made now in the spirit of games like Risen and Gothic. Dragon Age Origins is the only game i feel that emulates that gritty concept. Looking forward to the Gothic 1 Remake.
Dragon age Origins is completely different game from Gothic or Risen,i love these games, but besides them being rpg i have no fkn clue how you compare them, gothic and risen are arpg as well, while dao is rpg real time and pause combat,i guess only thing common they have is they are both fantasy, and tbh even with all my love for risen and gothic series, they can't come close to dragon age origins in terms of story, world, characters and setting.
6:00 It is possible to escape the monasty and go with the bandits It happend to me as i played as bandid got my booty handelt cuz stupid and just broke out and did what i wanted to do
If you have Risen 1 on steam, there is a beta branch with some updates made after the ports released. They fixed some bugs and also added a sensitivity slider. I don't know why it's still in the beta branch, but considering it's Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic... yeah, not surprising they leave something half baked.
Maybe I played a more improved version of the game, but there are several helmets in Risen 1, most of them can be bought from smiths in Harbour town and maybe also in the monastery
Loved Risen 1, just finished it for the first time this morning. It's a really dense game, you could barely cut out a single enemy out of it it's super lean, and it's surprisingly bug-free too. Didn't know what to do with myself after finishing it, heard the other 2 is bad anyway, so I started another playthrough
I have a big love for the first Risen, was a big part of my childhood in the same way that Gothic 1 and 2 for a lot of peoole. I find myself going back to Risen 1 like once a year, playing it basically until the reptilians appear and the game falls off. Wish they could have kept the quality of the early hours throughout the whole game
In fact the brown hue in R1 is perfect. It makes the atmosphere so damn dense. Even when playing in a cold room I feel like my character is walking around in tropic 40°C with 100% air humidity. R3 on the other hand feels cold and empty due to huge visible distance, no fog, just clear and boring.
Learning how to make potions is EXTREMELY useful in Risen! You can make potions that give you permanent stat boosts and experience points, which is very important in this game because there are no respawning enemies, meaning the game has a limited amount of experience points.
I collected all plants for that in Risen 2 until the very end and then realized I couldn't make potions because I needed to invest in voodoo and also I needed to go look for recipies so I said fuck it and just went ahead and killed Mara without using any stat increases because the game was easy. At this point I just wanted it to end.
Even with pirates if they've decided to use the combat system and the bow from the first Risen, the two next games from this saga would be much better and pretty decent sequels.
the counter parry in Risen 1 only and always has the critical hit move afterwards if its the unupgraded version. With the upgraded version, which can hit enemies directly on its own, you continue with normal attacks. There are 3 helmets in the game btw, one that you can find and two that you can buy. Next to the titan helmet and the ocular ofc
I think one of my problems with Risen 2 and 3 is that we travel to a bunch of different islands and these places feel isolated from each other and the only reason we go to these places is because the plot demands it. In Risen 1 we stay in one place the whole time and explore more of it as we progress through the story not mention what you can find off the beaten path. The three major locations on Faranga the Don’s camp, the Monastery, and Harbor Town have importance to the plot because there are characters who have connections to each these locations especially Harbor Town and you have to speak to these people at different parts of the story. Risen 2 and 3 only have a few characters that are somewhat relevant to the plot and they are scattered around on these different islands and we have to hop on a ship to get there rather than travel on foot and explore the island as we go like in Risen 1 so it becomes a check list of go here talk this npc and then leave to talk to another on a different island.
I played risen on the 360 originally. I must have glorified it in my mind. I did enjoy it back in the day. I have the pc version now I haven’t played it, bought it out of nostalgia and craved an rpg to play. Never got around to it. I remember I thought the ending also was dumb. But the journey was a blast. Tried risen 2 and the setting with pirates just turned me off. And I do own risen 3 but have never installed it. This retrospective has peaked my interest and now I’ll probably give the other 2 a try.
always a new reason to talk about risen 1 PS. How cool would risen 3 be if you could sail to Faranga* PSS. 360* player. Hated it. Enjoyed it. Loved it. Best rpg on 360. shame on that xb one port
I agree I love reason one it was probably my favorite at all three two was okay although a lot of people hated it but three was probably my second favorite
I remember the first game, and sorta being interested in the third. Played the first on the 360. Gothic 1 and Risen 1 got Switch ports, and its getting Gothic 2 ported
To be honest, I'm glad Risen 1 wasn't a chapter longer, as the last third of the game felt like it just dragged on more than it had to. By that time, I explored the whole island and killed pretty much everything that moved outside of a settlement, so it was just like completing a checklist.
I fell in love with Risen 1 since the first time I played it, there's something that makes the world feel alive, like when you finish a quest and the NPCs react to what you did even tho the game doesn't tell you that you can go back to talk to them. That being said, there's so much junkyness in the game that it prevent me to recommend the game to my friends
I absolutely loved risen 1, even bought the collectors edition. Risen 2 however... There's just so much jank I can handle. Frisbeed the disc out the window
did you know in risen 2 that huge enemy whos killing the gnomes , you can one shot by simply holding a bomb in youre hand and let it steal it from you ?
See, on my pc I have never had an issue with Risen 1, not bugs, no crashes, didn't need a compatibility mode but so far all I have experienced wit Dark Waters is crashes and I have to run it in XP compatibility...disappointing is kind of an understatement
I can’t say I enjoyed the Risen series all that much. Liked the first game but was sorely disappointed with the second, my brother played the third Risen and he thinks it’s a decent experience so I’ll have to try it out someday. Elex on the other hand I love, looking forward to the third instalment
I have played R1 but i didnt enjoy the story that much, probably becouse i didnt understand all the mechanics from the start. I also didnt finish the game, i justbreached the first village and started doing quests when for some reason i stopped. It was like 6 years ago. I also played R2 but for some reason on my laptop from the time it runed like crap. Unolayable. Which made it a big surprise for me to learn that R3 was working perfectly fine on the same laptop while looking way better. I enjoyed R3 up to the first sea monster fight where i got stucked and couldnt progress. For some reason i kept had my ship sinked to the bottom of the ocean by that little monster and couldnt continue the story. My favorite part was that vodoo magic :) It felt nice being able to become a parrot in order to reach unaccesible places. I don't remember all the spells but this one have sticked to my mind. And i remember preffering the lighter swords oposite to the bigger ones becouse i didn't like the mechanic where you have to charge the attack to be more powerful and make more damage. Elex feels much better that Risen 3 at this. That being sayed, i want to replay Elex 3 after watching this :)
Gotta respect PiranhaByte devs - they kept to their quirky Euroyank German RPG making traditions from the very begining (aka their first game) to the end (aka their latest game).
2 and 3 were alright eventhough, I admit I couldn't continue 2 to the end eventhough I finished 1 and 3 Something about 2 just didn't exactly grip my attention. It had some nice ideas and humour but felt a bit all over the place for me. For me, Risen 1 is best Risen and by a big margin. The combat felt better than the other 2 and so did the writing, world and story. Also the realistic levantine medieval setting Risen 1 had going on was pretty cool, IMO. Enjoyed it a lot more than the pirate theme. The inquisition were a very well done faction in 1, too and it did not only have a sense of progression but also a sense of belongingness and immersion. It was just very well crafted in regards to factions specially the inquisition. Also, Mendoza was such an amazing character! Bear in mind that I played and finished 3 before I started 1 and still found 1 a lot better than 3 and than 2 that I tried later.
I would say that I don't like how much of a difference going from risen 1 to risen 2 was. I like the pirate theme, it's an interesting twist that I wish more games explored, but it seemed like a bit of a jump from what happened in the first game. That being said I loved the series overall. It's a fantastic set of games that punches well above it's budget.
I mean it's already kinda 'noted' from the first game 'famous pirate captain and patty' then the setting in caribean full of islands So it's kinda 'noted' that it will related to something in the sea, most likely a pirate
I had promised to play Elex and Risen as well as some hidden gem rpgs in the comment section of this channel. Life just wont give me time. 😅 I will eventually but feel like watching the reviews of these games several times now.
Risen 1, I really liked, of course some things I disliked: - The story and exploration progression were nearly pitch prefect, the games pacing was so good. That is why the ending feels rushed as everything before that was so well done in that regard. - Voice acting was decent, especially some of the bandits which were so smarmy and conniving it was delight to speak with them. - Combat was good, basic but good, I disliked the trainer system mainly because you have to run around searching for one that is on the appropriate level, but it did not bother me that much. - The mage class is semi-hidden, MINOR SPOILER ALERT, you can be only warrior if you join the bandits, but if you get captured by the monastery, early on you get railroaded into warrior too. The only way to be a mage is to get the quest from the bandits to enter the city, then befriend the Inquisition faction there and enter the monastery voluntarily and then become a mage. - If you fight an NPC you can beat them up and get the option to kill them or just beat them up, killed one of the early trainers in the bandit camp by mistake because the game did not bother explaining the mechanic beforehand. Overall had tremendous fun with Risen 1, the second game I dropped early on, however, never bothered with game 3.
I played risen One through backwards compatibility on the series x I could not stand the stick sensitivity but I love the game and dealt with it and then come to find out that it was coming to PS4 with improvements in January 2023😂 is that beat it in November 2022
It blows my mind that there are really people out there with multiple consoles and no PC. That's like wasting money on two beat-up dirt bikes instead of just buying a normal car.
just started playing ELEX2 and so far great, the major diff. vs the first one, graphics a big upgrade and the jetpack right from the start, just awesome. I dont know if ill like it/love it, or just ok. Im just in the beginnings, so... but so far i like it. Risen games, i liked all of them, the first one was like the closest to Gothic games feel i think, but even the third is not that bad (forme), but i didnt like the second one too much. Too much Pirate vibe.
Gothic 1, Gothic 2, Risen 1. The only games from PB that I approve. But they are one of the best games ever. I am pretty sure they did not understand what makes a good game even after making several of them. Kinda funny.
You actually missed quite a lot about the Risen 2 lore, things that actually get explained in some dialogues. So i think your rant in the beginning is kinda unfair.
Elex is the one who gave stronger risen vibes, because of the same devs too greedfall is always giving spider's vibes if u play their previous games=mars war log, bound yby flame, techno u can feel the vibes is similar to all of that
Per the title and description, which includes nice bookmarks, you'll see that this covers the three games and the Xbox port of the first game. All the best.
Exploring the island in Risen1 was so good that I wasn't able to keep my hands off the game even when everything else was mediocre. I think only Gothic2 had a more rewarding world to explore. Everything after R1 was just trash.
I played Risen 1 for almost 30 hours on the switch and I prefer the other two to it, heck I even traded it for other games. I know I'm in the minority but it just didn't click for me.
Risen 1 was great , basically gothic 3 .. risen 2 and 3 hovewer was absolute garbage... I only finished 3 because i forced myself through it .. but Risen 1 is only one i enjoyed
That would sum up the Risen series.

Gotta respect PiranhaByte devs - they kept to their quirky Euroyank German RPG making traditions from the very begining (aka their first game) to the end (aka their latest game).
2 and 3 were alright eventhough, I admit I couldn't continue 2 to the end eventhough I finished 1 and 3
Something about 2 just didn't exactly grip my attention.
Disgusting profile picture , less playing video games back to school with you boy
I mean it's already kinda 'noted' from the first game
'famous pirate captain and patty'
then the setting in caribean full of islands
So it's kinda 'noted' that it will related to something in the sea, most likely a pirate
I had promised to play Elex and Risen as well as some hidden gem rpgs in the comment section of this channel. Life just wont give me time. 😅 I will eventually but feel like watching the reviews of these games several times now.
Isn't Elex 3 cancelled? Piranha Bytes disbanded right?
Risen 1, I really liked, of course some things I disliked:
- The story and exploration progression were nearly pitch prefect, the games pacing was so good.
@@failedGraphicswhat makes you think I don't have a gaming laptop or something like that 😏
just started playing ELEX2 and so far great, the major diff. vs the first one, graphics a big upgrade and the jetpack right from the start, just awesome.
What about Elex 1?
@@PG19871230 I am not a fan of mixed sci-fi and fantasy setting.
You actually missed quite a lot about the Risen 2 lore, things that actually get explained in some dialogues. So i think your rant in the beginning is kinda unfair.
Risen 2 and 3 if they went the same direction as the first one
Risen 1
Greedfall gave me risen vibes
Elex is the one who gave stronger risen vibes, because of the same devs too
greedfall is always giving spider's vibes
if u play their previous games=mars war log, bound yby flame, techno
u can feel the vibes is similar to all of that
is this just Risen videos combined into one or do i watch it all?
Per the title and description, which includes nice bookmarks, you'll see that this covers the three games and the Xbox port of the first game. All the best.
it's different
My game idea: Stranger (2008)
funny how nobody ever talks about Gothic 4 :D
Exploring the island in Risen1 was so good that I wasn't able to keep my hands off the game even when everything else was mediocre.
I think only Gothic2 had a more rewarding world to explore. Everything after R1 was just trash.
Great video! I wish we had a real Risen 2 and not this pirate spinoff. The first Risen was almost perfect.
I was so disapointed when i saw this trilogy was that mid after playing Gothic 1
ARCHOLOS > Gothic 2 > Gothic 1 > Risen 1 > Elex > Whatever...
I am not telling tales. I did flip GSP. I am lucky he could not find parking.
I played Risen 1 for almost 30 hours on the switch and I prefer the other two to it, heck I even traded it for other games. I know I'm in the minority but it just didn't click for me.
Risen 1 is a awesome RPG. For me in the same category as Gothic 1 and 2. Risen 2 was the dogshit problem. 3 couldnt save that series anymore.
Risen 1 was great , basically gothic 3 .. risen 2 and 3 hovewer was absolute garbage... I only finished 3 because i forced myself through it .. but Risen 1 is only one i enjoyed
Lol "only fans sister"
Too bad we did not get a complete edition of Risen 2 on PS4 then all 3 would be on the same system outside of PC.
I sincerely hope the developers at Piranha Bytes find work elsewhere and continue making absolutely crap games for future generations to uninstall.
tf is ur problem
