You have done a great start! Space is good. Your aft cabin is such a good size! That part is similar to our boat, although ours is smaller. Also, our entryway through to the cabin is part of our galley as that's where our refrigerator is. On the other side where your galley is, we have a navigation table. Ours is a 37 foot boat though (and we love her!). Perfect for us. She has been a little neglected but we are remedying this.
Hi Jemma! Thanks for watching. We are slowly settling in, it’s nice to have more space. We’ve been looking around the boat at the work we have to do, it’s a little daunting…
@@SailingSeabird I imagine, but remember the saying about the elephant. How to eat an elephant, one bite at a time 😃I'm sure you will do a wonderful restore. I'm so happy to follow along.

Just found your channel and like it. It's a huge job for two people and this is only a suggestion. Help X is a good resource for volunteers, especially those people that are coming up to the end of their training and need projects to complete a portfolio. Also there could be a local college with students learning restoration in wood, fibreglass, upcycling or fabrication that may benefit from experience with your project Good luck 👍
Hiya, cheers for watching. Rigging is serious business hehe. I’ve been collecting bits for the past few years. Excited to use them, finally. Just need new 1x19 wire. But, I think we are a while off restepping the mast. Keep watching and one day it might all come together. Cheers ⛵️
Looks better a little cleaned up, are you going to keep us in suspense or do I have to try and guess what boat ( builder) it is? Rot in the bottom of all the wood work worries me a lot , what’s the water line in side like or did it have a bilge drain? Cheers Warren
Hi Warren! It is a Gulfstar 41. It looks like it’s fresh water that created all the rot. There’s a perfect line all the way around the boat and it’s all at the same level. We’ve seen other abandoned boats collec water when it rains. The hatches were open the mast hole wasn’t covered.
It could be from or part from rainwater but if the boat was that open, it could be part from snow blowing in and setting on the interior decks, which would give different patterns of decay.
@@SailingSeabird I can see why you thought there may have been worth saving this boat. Some were built for the early charter trade where space was more important that anything! Some good american bones anyway.
Hello I saw several of your videos and they are really very interesting. Question: did you turn off the automatic translation option? My language is Spanish. Was that sailboat found in that dry dock in France? Are there other ship cemeteries like this? is it possible to find another one in those places? Does the engine exist? is it functional or repairable? What final cost do you estimate will be the complete restoration?
Hola Mario!
You can clean all teak with 35% ammoniak and water. Shower with a pump bottle and let it penetrate. wet further with a dish brush and scrape with a steel spatula. The teak regains its former color and you hardly need to sand.
@@SailingSeabird Good early solid glass hulls last almost for ever there was a dodgy patch following the oil crisis. . But if the hulls been treated with a barrier coat and re gel coated or refinished a century looks quite possible maybe longer... OMG a Hasseldorf wake board?!? Nice to see your investment paying for its self :P On a more serious note, I really like the layout, curious and sorry if its been answered already, but what was the original rig on this?
Hi. Sorry to hear about the motor being beyond repair. You must know about the outfit in the UK that refurbs marine diesels? I can't remember the name but my friend wanted a Thornycroft and I checked them out and they had Perkins 4108's. A quick, but expensive, solution! Or, you can go the Wilding route and rebuild the old beast! Also, does the hydraulic steering work? I hope so because it is unique: all the Gulfstar 41's I checked out still had cable steering. It would be interesting to know if the modifications were made by a prior US owner before doing the Atlantic crossing or after by an EU owner. A combo hydraulic steering / autopilot system would be cool to have but, realistically, I don't hold out much hope for the autopilot. Hydraulics can be fixed anywhere is the world and are reliable - until they break all of a sudden! Make sure you have spares and more oil. Also, make sure you have an emergency tiller that works! Is there an access port on the aft deck underneath that big box? I think that is how it works but I would ask Gulfstar 41 owners what they do.
A question for me (Stu) marine something in Dorset. Our last boat had the same steering. This one doesn’t have check valves on the helm so it’s got to go to a box then to the ram and motor, but same same. The old autopilot is sweet, still need to check the pump but a generic from England wasn’t that expensive. We changed all of that on Wayzgoose. I’ll put the same system in here, old St60 Raymarine (bomb proof). I’ve been looking at second hand engine here in France, the right one will find us. Thanks for watching. It means a lot 😊
Having it that close means you cannot jet wash it without making a mess of waygoose though.😉 That ram looks in remarkably good state given the age and dereliction.... You have a mast ...bonus points 😎👍🏼🤞🏼 Cost a Euro and find one maybe More keep your depth guage fish finder ..it might work ...also keep any damaged parts as patterns. The Spinnaker could be DIY repaired ... dont chuck it yet...they are not cheap. Cut some sprigs of lavender and stick it various places ..you can also get citronella candles in tins to further deter biting insects.. Quite a transformation just cleaning it up.. White vinegar is good at cleaning off mould from headlining's and resistant areas. Shes a beamy boat what a pity the mast hole was left open ...i bet most of that heavier water damage was from that being uncovered. The adventure begins...😉⛵😎🤞🏼 Definately
Hey Clive! Yes, we kept a lot of things. We’ll repair that sail. We are sure it’s got a few years in her. That’s exactly what we think. It was probably fresh water as the hole was uncovered and all the hatches were open. A shame… but fixable 😊💪🏼
@@SailingSeabird Hope so the ply panels aren't too bad to replace but the teak slats lining the curve of the hull will need a bit of careful thought . Though they aren't usually structural. A waterproof gator or boot round the mast base to cabin deck will help keep the water out and protect your wooden collar. Assuming you are going to live aboard and you have work to do Might i suggest adding a substantial hard Dodger to the cockpit to get in behind and under from extremes ... and keep the access way dry and the helms person warm in winter.

Hey Marty! Thank you for the advice. We’ll see what works best :)
Just found your channel and like it.
It's a huge job for two people and this is only a suggestion.
Help X is a good resource for volunteers, especially those people that are coming up to the end of their training and need projects to complete a portfolio.
Also there could be a local college with students learning restoration in wood, fibreglass, upcycling or fabrication that may benefit from experience with your project
Good luck 👍
Seabird is a great name. She looks like a diamond in the rough! - my sail boat is named Sunbird :). Looking forward to watching on.
Those were our exact same words: a diamond in the rough! 😊 Sunbird is a beautiful name as well.
Mabie you can acquire some more used rigging from other boats on 1 euro row
@@carlcarlamos9055 boat is in south of France near marseille, but sideways rain could be common there in winter!
@@SailingSeabird I can see why you thought there may have been worth saving this boat. Some were built for the early charter trade where space was more important that anything! Some good american bones anyway.
@@CheersWarren let’s hope you are right and the bones are still good! 😅
Hello!!
We will give that a try. That’s probably the only thing we haven’t tried yet 😅
Thanks for sharing loved the shows...but is it really one euro? 😀
Hehe, yeah 👍🏼
Absolute best of luck you two, I’ve subbed for what I’m sure will be a long series. Boat has great potential. You two make me smile. Thanks
Hi Andrew! Thank you so much for your support and kind words. 😊
The thing I remember about Port Navy Service is the howling of the wind.
You know it well then.
Richard, thanks for watching and commenting. 😀
But, how long does fiberglass live?
Good question. Who knows…
@@SailingSeabird
Good early solid glass hulls last almost for ever there was a dodgy patch following the oil crisis. . But if the hulls been treated with a barrier coat and re gel coated or refinished a century looks quite possible maybe longer... Its all about preventing blistering due to water penetration and protecting the resin against the harmful effects of UV degradation. The earliest GRP hulls were built in the 1950s.
Capt Q's channel is a mine of information on these early designers builders and vessels..
Theres a really good Sailing channel called sailing Tritaia..the guys called James and hes solo sailing the world in
his 1950s GRP boat ⛵ he rebuilt. ..and built his own really nice hard dodger for.
Hes a Gnarly looking throw back to the seafarers of old tattoos and ear loop piercings but hes actually a very quiet and
Reflective guy.
OMG a Hasseldorf wake board?!? Nice to see your investment paying for its self :P On a more serious note, I really like the layout, curious and sorry if its been answered already, but what was the original rig on this?
Cheers! :)
It is a Gulfstar 41 sloop.
Good luck with the new restoration project. You just got another subscriber.
Did the boat come with the mast and rigging? Did you find it?
Hello! Thank you for subscribing :)
Yes, we found the mast 😊👍🏼
Ok, I’m intrigued, you just earned a new subscriber to come along for the ride, have fun and good luck.👍
Thank you David! 😊
Seabird will be a beautiful sailboat once you restore her.
Jeff. Thanks! We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, these comments do encourage us.
Yeah, great!

I wish you well too. Amused by English expression. Button for a soil. Maybe a batten for a sail. And Mask, maybe mast 1 Good luck. Aussie Doug.
Cheers Doug,
Glad you enjoy 😉
Thanks for watching
Having it that close means you cannot jet wash it without making a mess of waygoose though.😉
That ram looks in remarkably good state given the age and dereliction.... You have a mast ...bonus points 😎👍🏼🤞🏼
Cost a Euro and find one maybe
More keep your depth guage fish finder ..it might work ...also keep any damaged parts as patterns.
The adventure begins...😉⛵😎🤞🏼
Definately
Hey Clive!
Yes, we kept a lot of things. We’ll repair that sail. We are sure it’s got a few years in her.
That’s exactly what we think. It was probably fresh water as the hole was uncovered and all the hatches were open. A shame… but fixable 😊💪🏼
@@SailingSeabird
Hope so the ply panels aren't too bad to replace but the teak slats lining the curve of the hull will need a bit of careful thought . Though they aren't usually structural.
A waterproof gator or boot round the mast base to cabin deck will help keep the water out and protect your wooden collar.
Assuming you are going to live aboard and you have work to do
Might i suggest adding a substantial hard Dodger to the cockpit to get in behind and under from extremes ...
and keep the access way dry and the helms person warm in winter.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 we’ll have to figure all that out as we work on the boat. As always, thank you for the advice Clive! 😊

I cannot get over how much room your going to have and so pleased you have the mast , I am not a sailor but love watching your videos does the boat just have one mast ? And do you know the manufacturer?🧐
Hi Paul! Thank you for watching 😊
Yes, the boat has just one mast and it is a Gulfstar 41. We are so excited about having more space…
Some people see the opportunity to create a fine yacht, some people will just see all the work. End of the day, Its just a list of jobs. You both look like you have the right stuff to tackle it all. I binge watched all videos so far :-)

It’s not that bad… 😅 Just time and money… Like every other boat hehe
This looks like a lot of work. But what you can expect for 1 euro.
You didn't show us the engineroom. Is there still an engine? Is this looking good? The steering gear didn't look bad, so perhaps the engine etc. is also still in a reasonable condition.
Wishing you success with the project and looking forward to the next episodes.
You get what you pay for 😂😂😂 The engine is worse hahaha
this boat is so similar to Odd Life boat. to me it looks exactly same.. any info on manufacturer and model?
Hello!
We just had a look at their channel. It is a center cockpit as well but it is not the same boat.
Ours is a Gulfstar 41 from 74.
Oxiclean works very good at killing mold and will leave your boat smelling a whole lot better, in fact I'm pretty sure they sale it in Lavender scent.
Thank you for the advice Tony. We’ll have a look 😊
