  • www.crosstraini... Six tips from sports psychologists to improve your skills and ride with confidence! A surprisingly large part of dirt riding is a mind game. Your skills and experience provide the foundation for your riding. Of course it is just an act. Need hard enduro training? Work through our video lists. But there is plenty of evidence from sports psychology that acting with confidence can lead quickly to true confidence. Focus on your strengths. This doesn't mean acting like an arrogant dick... look at all the top extreme enduro riders as an example. No boasting from them. Hard enduro techniques are covered in our training vids. Just very likeable guys who have a quiet confidence in themselves. But positive or negative thinking plays a huge part in how well you will ride. I often surprise myself by finally getting the courage to tackle a new obstacle and getting through quite easily, and then start to wonder if I was ready to try it six months earlier? Into enduro and dirt bikes? Check out our dirt bike videos. Unlike this channel! Even better, pay for some serious coaching. This will usually be a much better investment than an aftermarket exhaust or anodised fuel tank cap. You can learn a surpising amount from videos, but coaching has some key advantages. See this video. Finally? It's great to feel confident and push yourself to learn more. But always remember to not venture too far out of your comfort zone. As our professor explains. Of course there are also guys with too much confidence. And they will destroy themselves and their motorbikes on a regular basis. If you are concerned about falling in a steep part of the section, get other riders to spot for you. Extreme enduro training vids are our focus. This isn't negative thinking, but simply removes a concern that could get in the way of riding positively. Likewise, plan where to put a foot down if needed and make the most of that dab. Again, this isn't negative thinking but simply having a back up plan that allows you to focus fully on the task ahead. On a budget? Find some decent dirt riding videos for riders who know what they are talking about. So unless you have a deathwish, safety comes first. Get all the good protective gear and set your limits. Work out how many risks you are willing to take. Learn how to laugh when the other guys call you a wimp for avoiding the tough obstacles... or even better spray their brake discs with WD40 when they aren't looking. A positive approach to a challenging section or obstacle can be a good thing. Ever thought I'll never make this? Your body reacts accordingly and you will tense up, not allow your bike to move freely, your technique will be stiff and forced, and chances are you will comprehensively bugger it up. At other times, you will surprise yourself and sail through it, and the confidence gained will show each time you tackle it after that. With practice, most of our riding technique comes from an instinctive subconscious level, and a negative approach interferes with this. So what can we do to develop confidence and a positive approach to riding? If you are enduro riding get into our enduro training vids. Our dirt riding tips are great for developing your hard enduro skills. This is from the Australian Institute of Sports, and the sort of thing coaches say to Olympic athletes. Most top athletes use visualization as a powerful psychological strategy for tackling new techniques. If you want extreme enduro training see our playlists of enduro skills to learn. It all sounds like new age mumbo-jumbo but strangely it actually works. Watch videos of the top riders doing the techniques you want to learn. The important bit? Close your eyes and picture yourself doing the same techniques in your head. This visualization can actually start connecting the synapses in your brain that will prepare you for the real thing. Finally, there is nothing wrong with a safety net. Try our training vids for working on your extreme enduro techniques. Stop saying to yourself "I'll never make this!" Unless it's a vertical cliff of course. Deliberately choose to think confidently e.g. "I have the skills and I can do this". Negative thoughts only get in the way of letting your body do what you've trained it to do. Look at riders who exude a quiet confidence and act in a similar way.

I might be inclined to like hard enduro but not “stupid hard enduro”.
Following someone who is very competent also boosts your confidence.

Often, I find myself riding faster, with less effort, while following a faster rider.

I find myself riding way harder than normal when a faster rider is behind me. On ocassion though, I find out afterwards that I had it going on that day and it was the rider behind that was struggling the most. The pain in my shoulder from patting myself on the back usually subsides within 3 days.

Lol, I can’t afford hard enduro, physically or maintenance wise. I’m just happy I can trail ride at all with my body aches. Now if someone was chasing me, I’d become 16 again if necessary.

Arrrr positive thinking. I got an example.
Log A: it's about handlebar hight most people go round it. I can do this log with my eyes closed.
Log B: foot hight nothing special. This Log has beaten me more over 50% time. I go round it, and everyone including a 12 year olds go over it. It's purely mental.

The one pro of being a girl. Guys are always super stoked to see me out riding. Always willing to help, and cheer me on over hard obstacles.
Really makes the whole mind game a breeze. ❤

It did help to get my skill set up to medium level by talking to myself as i learnt the techniques-"i can do this, follow the instructions, they must work,a small lie, this is easy!"
Its a bit like playing guitar,as you get better EVERYTHING gets better, you cant really "master" one technique and move on.This worked for me,feel free to ignore/delete😀Keep practicing like me😀

For me physical preparation whit strength but mostly flexibility training and breath control are key.
If you are in good shape you'll notice that you can take bigger hits with less injuries or pain which gives confidence. Also your breath is a good way to consciously control your emotional state and it relaxes your core so you aren't stiff on the bike, seems trivial but is easy to forget about. When you feel pressure on your throat or get the screaming barfies take some deep breaths and it'll be more comfortable

Great advice! So true across many many disciplines that are difficult and scary. Skiing, rock climbing, pickle ball, or even Fighter Pilot. Our human mind is our greatest advantage, and potential disadvantage at the same time!

Absolutely, a little confidence goes a long ways, it's made a huge difference in where I can and can't get a bike to these days. Practice is such a biggie, building some obstacles I can adjust at home to tweak the difficulty and scarry factor make a huge difference in what I am comfortable with out on the trail.

It's been 2 years since I tore my ACL. Still finding it hard to step out of my comfort zone even with knee braces. Don't know if I'll ever get back to 100% confidence. It's irritating when I hear that little voice in my head telling me "Don't Do It!".

I recently did a course in basic off roading. My mind was in the way pretty much the whole day, until right at the end when I told myself “fuck it - the worst that can happen is I drop the bike and get some bruises”. This wasn’t entirely accurate, though, as almost the first thing that happened that day was a spiral fracture of another chap’s femur and tibia. But I discovered that a certain amount of fuck-it attitude is required if you’re on two wheels. I’m not sure if that’s what you called “quiet confidence” in this video, but to me it feels different somehow.

I am confident that if I try something and get hurt, my wife will give me one of those looks that I'm confident means I will be in the dog house for a while. 😂The older I get the harder it is to rely on just being confident. My brain is young and robust but my body doesn't act the same way.

I recently lost about 1 inch of my left ring finger riding a dirt bike (the dumbest wipeout you could ever imagine). My wife is still mad at me. My confidence? I did my first hard enduro race about 2 months later and proved that this little flesh wound is nothing but a minor inconvenience. I can lose half a knuckle every decade and still have enough fingers to ride.
