Simon Neil is such an interesting and positive guy, this is a great interview and what a fantastic format for future interviews, ending with a song was a real gift, thanks everyone.
Simon helped me get through the first lockdown here in the UK, his Friday night live streams from his house gave me something to look forward to each week. Glad to see him back on here.
Simon seems like a bloody nice chap. So passionate in his thoughts towards music, and in his performance, even when he's just demonstrating some tones on RUclips channel. Buuuuuuttttt..... the winning moment for me, was the look on Dan's face when he was smashing Red through Simon's rig at the end. Top show chaps. One of my faves.
Wow - that acoustic version of Space caught me off guard - superb!! A great reminder of while we love, love, love all these pedals and tones, it all comes together with a great a song! Well done fellas. Great guests and great show. It's unlikely my board will ever have a Metal Zone, but I really appreciated learning about it in context here. Also, great discussion on the EQ considerations when going from 3-piece to 5-piece live.
First off, what a great guest. I watched some video of his band and they are incredible. He's a natural performer. It's a crime that I'm just hearing about them now, but I'm so glad I did. But I thought the way I think of baseline tones--Cleanish, Middle and Rocking, was dumb and I never really said it out loud. For me, it was "Clean Hendrixy," "Heavy Cream/Middle Zeppelin" and "Weezer." Those were sort of my guideposts. Lately I've been looking for a more "studio guy OD," which might be a problem the new Wampler pedal solves. I'm writing a lot because I'm so excited that I can stop feeling like a nutter for wanting "Cleanish, Some More and Full On Rock" to be how I talk about this. I guess I felt silly. I now have permission to be silly.
Love what he does with the clean amp underneath you can hear the ‘clarity’ in the heavy tones. However, most of the venues I play freak out at the size of the AC30 so I can only imagine the look on their faces as I come through the door with 2 amps (never mind 3!!). Any tips on achieving a similar effect with pedals? Imagine its just a case of experimenting with gain stacking? I do this a little already as I run 4 or 5 drive/distortion/fuzz pedals on the board as I like different textures for different songs/parts (was also interested in Simons comments and journey here!). Any tips on direction that would speed up the trial and error gratefully received. Great episode, love your work! 🤘
And there are other other options with crazy bang for buck. I'll happily suggest the Marshall Jackhammer, which similarly needs a 0.005mm tweak on each knob to acheive God status...or a horrible sound.
Genuinely.. this is one of those videos where you feel like you are receiving a gift, it is that good. An absolutely awe inspiring experience. Thank you.
Simon seems like a genuinely lovely human. His song at the end really got me - such an earnest performance. Really moving - thanks for sharing him with us!
That was just fabulous fun. Also, on the off chance that Simon reads these - my 10 year old daughter & I were in a record shop for one of the record store days back in the summer, I was buying bits & pieces and out of the blue she asked me to get her the new Biffy album (on gorgeous blue vinyl too). I saw the band live years ago at Milton Keynes, great outdoor gig, but hadn’t heard much recent stuff, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. We brought it home, she put it on the hifi, I had to wince through a few choice Anglo Saxon words 🤣 ( I guess she hears it at school ) ... but my god it sounded house-shakingly *epic* (Cop Syrup in particular)... And now my daughter is picking away at a little nylon acoustic I bought her... and when she’s ready for a Metal Zone I’ll be there for her. (Probably still find one for £75, too). More power to your right arm, sir.
I just want to say, that at 15:37 in I've paused the video and gone to iTunes to purchase several Biffy Clyro albums without even listening to anything else haha. What a lovely fella. An absolute monster and beast onstage, and a gentle, fun, friendly, genuine guy every other moment and even mixed together. Biffy are totally unique and phenomenal.
Great episode. Simon is a legitimate musical genius and always seems like such an amiable, humble and kind human being which really comes across in the music too. For any of you discovering Biffy for the first time, listen to albums 2, 3 and 4 if you enjoy the more aggressive, bonkers side to their sound. Also check out Reuben (early biffy contemporaries) and Jamie Lenman’s solo stuff after Reuben split. Another great artist with incredible, modest talent and a thoroughly nice person too.
Simon if you read comments I put on Wolves of Winter for my 5 year old and he is a Biffy Clyro kid now. Runs around the house yelling WE ARE WOLVES!! That pedal show you guys deliver as always was wanting a follow up to the last episode with Simon on
I got my friend to come and see Biffy in the Glasgow Garage in about 2000. Sold it to him by saying they were a bit like like Coldplay but a little bit heavier 😂😂
I confess that living in the States I'd never heard of Biffy Clyro until you guys. Now, clearly, I'm going to have to check them out. Cheers from a nervous denizen of the Big Apple.

F**in' lesson - song writing, sound, intelligence, and humility. Thank you Simon for being so wonderfully humble and gracious, and by sharing your concept of what music should be, being a massive song writing inspiration. The way these guys go about music is proper. How it should be done.
I'm in the US and am just now getting into this band. They should be huge here but they aren't yet. Let's make it happen. I want to see them live. Thanks for this video!
A few years ago they played in philly in a tiny old venue as if theyre not HUGE from where they’re from. It was INSANE! When they come around the US please don’t miss them you gotta experience the biff, especially in a venue and not a big stadium sitting super far away
I must have watched this video 5 times + since released at minimum. Simon is a true artist who I could listen to all day and a lovely lad all round. Massive props to Churd for taking us through the pedal and just like the rest of the Biffy boys is a true gentleman. Great content and great interview Dan & Mick!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: it'd be ace if you could persuade Mike Vennart to come on the show. The man's a guitar genius, a great songwriter, and has some pretty great anecdotes in the bag...
I knew nothing of Biffy Claro before TPS brought it to my attention and even then I didn’t really get into them. Saying that, I need to give them another look, Simon energy and outlook are second to none. And while I’m giving them another look, I need to get that Metal Zone out of the closet and check it out. Great show guys.
I don't own a metalzone but Olaf says to get the best out of it you should put it through the send and return of your amp, counter intuitive I know, but if anyone knows, he does. I hope that is helpful for you, keep rockin'!
I've never heard of Biffy Clyro, other than hearing the name mentioned on TPS, but based upon the sounds Simon is making, I'm wondering how it's possible I've never heard of them or heard their music, considering they've been around for apparently about 25 years, now, with three #1 albums in the UK recently? I hope Simon doesn't mind the comparison, but the first thing that comes to mind is a comparison to Swervedriver, of whom I am a fan, and a little bit of Hum, too, especially with the big dynamic shifts and the harmonic structures. Simon is wringing some glorious noise out of his guitar, exactly the kind of thing that makes me sit up and take notice. Thanks, TPS, for turning me on to something new!

Fuck. I was a huge fan of biffy and simon...but everytime he's at the show I value/appreciate him even more as a person and artist. What an incredible video/interview. Loved EVERYTHING. and like i'm sure everybody else here...i need a fucking metal zone. hahah His fucking clean tone is unbelievable, his gain tones....I mean...they've always been out of this world....
Balance Not Symmetry was their best record in years. While Simon wasn’t trying to find singles in that record there were so many heavy hitters. Love the blend of different styles too.
Biffy hadn’t been on my radar until I caught them at Sonisphere and experienced that visceral awesomeness from a few rows back front and centre and by the end of the first song they had themselves a new fan. Since then I’ve taken every opportunity to see what I believe are one of the best bands in the world you can see live today! So amazing that TPS can have these amazing artist interviews and bring your wonderful personal heart to the proceedings.
Neil Simon and Biffy Clyro are my favorite new to me band and this episode of TPD is number 2 after 10 Ways to Make Fuzz Work for You because of Mick's amazing intro! Neil Simon...wow...what a fun show. I discovered the bridge pickup on my strat because of this video. I dont have a metal zone but my OCD ge provided righteous tone.
This was a great show. A friend showed me a Biffy Clyro album just a few months ago and I was blown away by the heavy and soft songs. Simon really is a genuine musician and guitar player.
Me the pedal virgin sees this board on the floor looking all empty floor pedalboard with a switcher/loop dealy and a metal zone. Fails to notice the massive cabs and the massive RACK OF GEAR. Oooho, says me, the pedal virgin, a minimalist.
It's a little odd at the end of 2022 to go back and watch this with screens up and masks on. My guitar, in general, and TPS, in particular, helped me make it through a tough time!
Every interview with Simon is so enjoyable. He perspires joy and honesty like a 6year old. He's still a kid inside. That might be the reason why he doesn't seem to age. Let the freak flag fly!
Look, my listening situation isn't perfect. I've got a decent speaker, but still it's just a computer. That said: I might have wasted that money on the vasectomy. Pretty sure the ball crushing glorious roar of the Booooom has sterilised me forever and I couldn't be happier. Cheers TPS and Simon for the sonic joy. [edited to add Chard to the list, sorry mate]
SO AWESOME.....

With a blend channel, as well as clean and dirty separate volume control. (and a better EQ)

I wish there was a bigger like button.
As always another great episode.
Awesome show! Bought a few Biffy albums after this! Love that song "Space"! Thanks, guys!
Great show guys, the joy in Dan's face at the end 1:14:43 is just great!!!
Oooho, says me, the pedal virgin, a minimalist.
amazing... what a gentleman....am I right that he uses texas specials and only uses the bridge pickup. beautiful tone
You know what Red sounded absolutely fucking awesome through Simon's Rig. Dan wasn't bad either :-)
A whole child ago...
