I lve to bake cakes for kids and see how excited they get over a theme cake especially made by their auntie. You have taught me so much, Ill never get paid for cake making but that doesnt change my desire to get better. Art is like my meditation, I love it and getting into the zone is relaxing.
This is such an old video you will probably never see this comment but thank you so much! I'm making a cake for my son's birthday and this helped me so much more than other videos I saw today. Thank you!
Hi Sandy! We read all of our comments. We appreciate you watching this video. :) You're very welcome and so happy this tutorial was helpful to you. :)
@@krazykoolcakes that is amazing, I'm so glad you read my comment. I wanted you to know how helpful it was, I truly appreciate it. Keep rocking those Krazy Kool Cakes!!!!
Thank you so much! I'm new to painting on cake. My granddaughters 9th birthday coming and I wanted to do something special. Thank you for your perfect advise! I watch a lot of baking and knew vodka is the best medium for this. You rock it's going to be a memorable birthday for her ♥️
You're VERY welcome! Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it. God bless you! :)
Thanks soo much to you and you wonderful husband for sharing so much with us, you are so kind and selfless. May God bless you always in all you do.Very grateful!!
Thank you so much Anancy! God bless you too! :)
Thank you for this painting demo.
It’s my pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching! 😃💕
Yay! All your tutorials are sooo full of incite and helpful! Thanks for being so generous with your talents! (And thank you too Mr. Husband--you two make one ingenious team!!)
Love it.Thank you Laura and best regards from Madeira Island - Portugal!
I love your videos and your work! Thank you so much for letting us in on your techniques! It's hard for me to not get annoyed or bored with most people's videos, but yours are just the best.
Thank you Megan! I really appreciate that! :)
I personally LOVE the painted look. Looks more artistic and organic. Anybody can airbrush, so it makes the cakes more "valuable" when they are hand-painted. :)
Airbrushing is SUCH AN EASY technique. Anyone at all can do it. My background before caking has always been painting and drawing so going back to my roots, plus I personally feel hand-painted cakes are much more artistic and more valuable. You can definitely charge more for a hand-painted cake than just an airbrushed cake. :)
So delightful that you share your techniques. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Jana! :)
i love watching ur videos, i learn so much from u, thanks for taking ur time 2 show us ur techniques i appreciate it.
Thank you Evon! I appreciate it! :)
I usually use vodka too but without the cake :)
Lol
😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much for that! Glad you like them! :) Thank you for your kindness!
Super cool... thank you for the tutorial, very helpful!!
So glad you enjoyed it Griselle! You're VERY welcome! :)
This is awesome! I work at a Ben and Jerry's and piping more intricate designs on ice cream cakes is such a hassle, in and out of the freezer every 15 minutes so the ice cream doesn't melt, I'm going to try painting.
You're very welcome! :) Glad you liked it!
This would be a great video to take a shot every time you mention Vodka!
Not at all. LOL. Definitely not good to drink vodka at any time. Thanks for watching! :)
I just love this technique..great work as usual..
Thank you so much Rachael! :)
Hi Newby! That's awesome!!! So happy it worked for you! :)
What a great tutorial! Thanks for posting and sharing!
Excellent tutorial ive learned something new and cant wait to try it thank you Laura
You're very welcome! Enjoy painting! :)
i am excited to try this! seems so easy!
Thanks for the video! You helped me a lot with what I needed to do when I do my first fondant cake :-)
Katrina Tibon You're very welcome Katrina! :)
Hi Jodie! Thank you for following my work and for your kind words! I really appreciate it. :) I've never heard of madeira mix? What is that? So curious! :)
Wow, thank you for responding so quickly. I have a grill cake to do today and I am donating to my Mother in law's office. I am using this opportunity to practice hand painting so if it isnt good with the rum, i will know without upsetting a customer, I will let you know how it works out;0)
Very informative Laura! I have to try this on a cake soon!
I usually use alchohol/gluten free extracts or natural flavors with anything I make, they have been pretty good so far. I'm going to try both this and the lemon technique and just use whichever works best. I still use this method for cakes that I make for most other people, though. Thanks!
Do you make your own fondant or buy it? I would love to see you make it, mine always comes out too sticky. I was also wondering could you paint the icing itself rather than fondant? I know some people prefer the icing over fondant and I wasn't sure about painting icing?
P.S. Love your videos!
You are VERY welcome! Glad you liked the leopard technique! :)
youre a great teacher!
Hi Laura, I did my Mom's birthday cake this way and it was awesome. I used clear rum because I didn't have vodka, but it work just the same;0) thank you for this awesome tutorial;0D
You're very welcome. :) I've never tried painting buttercream.
Thank you Frawla. I'm glad you like the technique. Like I mentioned in the video, you can use any high alcohol content extract like lemon. I like to use vodka because it doesn't leave a flavor behind. If you don't mind your cake tasting like lemon or any other flavor, then you can use any of those. :)
What do you mean you used wilton butter flavoring? For what did you use it?
Thank you for responding so quickly!
I appreciate that!!! THANK YOU! :)
Hi. Definitely don't want to use regular food coloring. I suggest GEL food coloring. You can find them at any cake supply, craft store, or even WalMart sells them. You're very welcome. :)
That means it's way to dr. Get a little spray bottle with water and spritz your dry fondant and then knead it to bring the moisture back in. Try not to use too much powdered sugar or cornstarch when rolling it out because that dries it very quickly. :)
hi laura i love the way you use in coloring the cakes i have one question can i use other liquid than the vodka and again you are really the best
This makes slot things easier!!
Great technique, you cannot find many hand painted cakes. Your awesome. Btw how one the fondant does not melt when you apply the wet paint? I was just wondering about that. One day I want to bake cakes.
Thanks, I'll have to try it for my next project. :3
I paint on buttercream a lot. It just needs to be crusted very well before painting.
AWESOME! :)
Obrigado Ana!!! Saudações a Portugal! :)
That's awesome! :)
Hi. I've never tried painting on buttercream so wouldn't be able to answer that question. The only extract I've ever tried is lemon. You can try it but I can't guarantee it will work.
HI Maggie, Thank you. :) We buy our fondant. Fortunately, we don't have the time to make it. :) I've never hand-painted buttercream so wouldn't really know. :)
Awesome! Thank you! :)
Hi Ynka, If you mean if you can paint on buttercream icing, I've been TOLD you can. I've never done it so not 100% sure. :)
Hi Laura thank you for your response, I actually tried your quilt pattern. I had one problem my icing bubbled under the fondant and caused puffiness under the fondant. Do you have any suggestions to prevent this from happening?
Hi! Yes, actually. It helps to do this immediately after you have covered your cake in fondant. Your icing should hopefully be hard and not soft so be sure to cover your cake in fondant after it has been in the refrigerator for several hours until it's rock hard. It also does help to be sure to use a "stiff" consistency icing like the one I use. You can find the recipe underneath any of my icing videos. I hope that helps. :)
laurapoopie Hi Laura....I have learned so much from your videos and thank you so much for sharing freely. Many places charge for tutorials. Regarding this fondant covering an iced cake, I have a question. If the icing is real hard, how is the fondant sticking to the cake? I've always been under the impression that you had to keep the icing wet so the fondant will adhere well.
vicki wick Hi Vicki! I'm glad you enjoy my tutorials. Yes, the fondant is really hard and it's funny that you would ask this questions as I am literally minutes away from filming a tutorial on how we get our fondant to stick to our hardened icing. Stay tuned! :)
FANTASTIC!
Do you cover your fondant covered cakes when you refrigerate them? Just thinking about the condensation after painting them.
(Read other comment first). IF your cakes form ALOT of condensation, you need to make sure the room you are working in is VERY COOL. If you just let the cakes assume room temp, it won't take long for the condensation to disappear, then you can go on about your decorating. Stop killing yourself with no sleep. You should be able to bake one day, ice & cover the cakes the next day, and decorate the day of. :)
If the room or studio you work in is very humid and not cool, then your cakes will DEFINITELY sweat. It is perfectly OK to refrigerate your cakes after you cover them in fondant. I think you are misunderstanding WHY the cakes sweat. First of all, they DON'T sweat from UNDERNEATH. They're really not sweating at all. Your cold cake is ATTRACTING the humidity in the air where you are. Like the drops of water that form on a water bottle after it's been out of the fridge for a while.
Try using Americolor super black. It's a truer black. Wilton tends to come off purple at times.
Haha! I LOVE that! :)
Hi can I put on a second coat just to make the colour look richer?
Hi! Yes, definitely. Just make sure the first coat is completely dry before doing so. Thank you for watching! :)
haha!! definitely going to try this, can't wait to paint some epic pictures on cakes so thank you!! Is it best to use gel food colour or do the standard more liquid ones work as well?
You're very welcome! :)
Thank u for the fast response:-) !! I have MS but was ask to do a very large cake for my step mom so I'm not wanting to wait until the last minute and do it all, do I put it in the refrig right out of the oven,or let it cool, and do I put it in bags or seran wrap,if wrap how many times would u suggest wrapping it....
Do you have a video on how to paint on buttercream?
Hi Tammy, You can do it in the same way. Thank you for watching. :)
What do you use for the white colour in the waves? Thanks for the video!
You're very welcome! I use white gel food coloring. Thank you for watching! :)
thanks a lot it's so beautiful!! a question you paint on royal icing or sugar past?thanks!!!!!
Thank you! :)
Hi Laura, Do you have any tips on marking the squares on the cake.
Hi! Yes I do actually! I would like to invite you to view my tutorial on how to create a quilt pattern on a cake. I would measure and mark the lines the exact same way using my pie chart paper, but for the squares, just make the lines straight down and across. I hope it helps!
Thank you for this tutorial Laura! Wondering how far ahead I could do this (want to make and paint my own wedding cake but not the day before)? Can you layer colours like a regular painting? For example, once you painted this blue and let it dry, could you go over with a different colour without the blue showing through?
Hi Mimi! I would do it no more than 2 days prior as you really wouldn't want your cake to be more than 3 days old by the time you wedding comes. You can layer the colors, just be sure to let each layer dry before applying more color on top. :)
Hey laura:'3 Thank you!
Buut what kind of brushes do you use? I mean, I haven't even started with my 'cake-buissness' yet, so I have no idea, but you don't use normal paintbrushes?
Keeping it in the fridge actually KEEPS it from becoming dry. If you leave it out of the fridge too long, it will start getting dry.
I thought I could never refrigerate the tiers after they are covered in fondant because when the cakes come out of the fridge and sit on the countertop for final decorations, it will condensate (sweat) underneath the fondant and cause bubbles and bulges. Please let me know your advice. I am always waiting to bake within 24 hrs of delivery and I usually get no sleep the night before becuase I'm still decorating.
Thank you so much 😘
You're very welcome! :)
Wondering why you have decided to hand paint lately vs airbrush?
Thanks! :)
You're very welcome. I don't know what "brand" they are, they're so old. LOL. But just make sure they're not plastic or fake bristles. Try and buy brushes that have fine or real animal hair bristles. :)
Never heard of that working but no reason to doubt you. :) I guess it's OKAY if you don't mind your entire cake having an extremely strong taste of lemon. LOL.
You are correct. :)
can you paint a second coat with a diferent color on top of the first coat or does paint gets all mixed up?
Hi Pablo! Thank you for your question. Yes you can paint a second coat with a different color on top. Just be sure that your first coat is completely dry to the touch. I hope that helps. :)
I forget to ask you an another question....you let dry the cake outside the fridge or in the fridge and how many time please? thanks!!!!
Hi :) , I've seen this technique in quite a few videos and they all say the same as you can use any extract but the vodka is best because of no lingering flavor and I totally agree. However noone ever states the proof of vodka they use, what proof of vodka are you using. cheaper vodka has a lower proof so lower alcohol content but will the cheaper vodka still work?
can you paint in butter crean too ? thanks very helpful
I've never tried it but it might work. :) Let me know how it works. :)
Yes cheap vodka works. LOL. We use the cheapest one in the liquor store. Ours is Heaven Hill vodka which 80 proof.
Can i use ediable liquid color instead?
I don't recommend using liquid food coloring because it is water based. If you use it on fondant, the fondant will get very soggy and will begin to break down. I recommend vodka or lemon extract because it evaporates quickly and all that's left behind is the color. Hope that helps!
@@krazykoolcakes thank you for the tip..
You're welcome. :)
Most definitely. :)
Amazing that good
Thank you Soma! :)
You're welcome. :) With fondant, I've only ever used lemon extract. Don't know if other extracts work. REMEMBER: if you use extract, your cake will TASTE like that extract. Why don't you just use vodka? LOL.
Hello, you and your husband are doing a great job keep up the good work. I just wanted to ask, its not very easy to access vodka in Pakistan and i also understand you tell us to use any other extract, but we dont have alchohol mixed in our extracts what do we do now :( ?
Thank you so much Shahrukh! That's a great question! I hope you can find another type of mineral spirits in your liquor stores there? As long as it has a high alcohol content and it is clear, you definitely want to try it. I'm sure that will work. Thank you for watching! :)
Good evening, pls how long can it take to dry completely,, and pls can I also use Edible spirit to hand paint.
Hi and thank your watching! The amount of time it takes to dry completely depends on how many layers of color you add and more importantly, the environment in which you have your cake. I live in the desert and the air is very dry so my painted cakes dry in just a few minutes. If you live in a humid/hot area, then it may take longer. In our rainy season I use a refrigerated air unit in my studio to avoid condensation which delays hand-painted cakes to dry. I hope that helps. :)
Hola me encantan tus videos una pregunta se puede usar esta tecnica con el color negro. Gracias y de verdad me han servido mucho tus videos.
Hi Emilee! I wish you the absolute best! I've created several tutorials to help wonderful people like you and your Mom. I hope you enjoy them! :)
at the end of the video you say that you put your cakes in the fridge and decorate in the morning...I once tried to stack tiers the next day and the fondant cracked...do you happen to know why that might have happened or maybe tips so that doesnt happpen?...thank you so much!
Hi there madam, just wanted to ask if what kind of coloring did you use?ist a food coloring?thank you!
Hi! Yes it is a gel food coloring. You're very welcome! :)
Do you use home made fondant or store bought?
I purchase all my fondant as it is super time consuming to make. :)
You're welcome. You never put cakes straight out of the oven. You have to always let them cool down first. Then wrap in plastic wrap and you can keep them in the fridge.
I am new to baking and would like to know where to buy the cake board that you display the finished cake on? also do you hold cake decorating classes?
hi so with reading other comments if I was to use the hard icing and get it really smooth I could paint on it correct? I was asked to do a full fondant cake but hate it as most people don't like so much sweet on cake...I'm doing a strawberry shortcake themed caked and had some ideas for painting one of the tiers...plus I do use the soft icing and I get great reviews on its taste...TIA
Hi Jinny! Yes you can paint on buttercream icing. It won't be as smooth as fondant but still doable. :)
What kind of fondant do you guys buy? I'm very comfortable using buttercream but I need to start experimenting with fondant. I just don't know which one to pick, the options are just so overwhelming.
We usually use Fondx or Fondarrific. You should try them. I'm sure you'll enjoy working with them. :)
You said the vodka dissipates, but would it be safe to use even if I can't have alcohol for medical reasons?
Hi where can I get coloring to paint on cakes could I just use food coloring?? Plz respond thanks:)
