Rick, Great video, and great tribute to Elizabeth Patterson, who will always be remembered as the reliable Mrs. Trumble. I guess we have to assume she was a widow, because she was older, with no husband, and the creators used the title "Mrs." She was the plot-saver. When no one else was around, there was always a mention that "Mrs. Trumble would watch the baby." And what a clever way to introduce her: from disgruntled neighbor to loyal babysitter. Rapidly approaching 100K Subs, Rick! I'm watching closely. Fans: Consider becoming a Patreon member. Best regards, Paul
My favorite Mrs Trumble moment is when the gang is getting ready to sail for Europe. Lucy askes Mrs T if she can bring her anything from Paris. Mrs T whispers in Lucy's ear. Lucy then yells out, "My Sin !?" The coy little giggle of Mrs T, perfection!
I also loved Mrs. Trumble in “Lucy’s Last Birthday” episode. She was a real friend to Lucy when Lucy thought that no one had remembered her birthday! ❤️
I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Once she fell in love with Little Ricky, they had a built in babysitter! I would think at times watching the show how lucky they were that she was always available. I loved her, I think she was perfectly cast as Mrs. Trumbull! Good one, Rick! 😊
Hey Rick, I love Mrs Trumbull, she was such a sweet old lady but I bet in her youth she was a force to be reckoned with!! Thank you for this fun video featuring Elizabeth Patterson 👍😷
I also fondly remember Elizabeth Patterson in the movie "Little Women" with Elizabeth Taylor and June Allyson. I just loved her. Thank you Rick! ☺️ You should get to 100,000 subs soon! 😉
It was perfect as they laid the groundwork for her character at the end if the episode when she was upset about children residing in the building when she was calming the baby upon their return from the Mertz apt when they realized they had forgotten about him and ran off without thinking about him being left alone, and she said ”that as long as she lived there he would never be left alone.” Perfectly normal during that era of time, neighbors calling upon neighbors to cover for childcare at no charge, it's what you did for one another.
Miss Trumble is buried in the cemetery in Savannah Tennessee. I lived in Adamsville and its right next to Savannah. I visited her grave several times while i lived there
Such superb writers, Madelyn Pugh (Davis) and Bill Caroll to think of the perfect baby sitter and the actress Elizabeth Patterson a gem who worked with the greats of Hollywood!
Rick - Thank you for doing this video. I guess I really hadn't thought of the little Ricky character's affect on the show's plot lines before. I remember Mrs. Trumble. She was such a sweet character with an interesting character voice as well. Have a great weekend, Rick. Blessings - Judith 🎵🎭
As mentioned by Rick at 4:05 the age difference in season six was pretty interesting. Technically Little Ricky was always played by older "actors", but only in the sixth season was the actor significantly older than the character that he played. In season 2 the character of Little Ricky was "born" on January 19, 1953 when the episode "Lucy Goes to the Hospital" was aired. Desi Arnaz Jr. was born the same day. The real life infant who appeared very briefly at the end of the episode was James John Ganzer who was just two weeks old when the episode was filmed, and nearly three months old by the time the episode aired and Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were born. Later in the second season the Simmons twins played Little Ricky in a few episodes, beginning with "No Children Allowed". They were four and a half months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr., they were six months old when they filmed their first episode. Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were only two months old when that episode was filmed. At the end of the second season the Simmons twins were replaced by the Mayer twins, who were seven months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr., and ten and a half months old when they filmed their first episode, "Ricky's 'Life' Story". However for some reason their debut episode didn't air until the beginning of the third season. The Mayer twins continued to play Little Ricky for the third, fourth, and fifth seasons, and they were three and a half years old when they filmed their last episode, "Lucy Gets Homesick in Italy". In season six there was quite the fast-forward mentioned by Rick when Keith Thibodeaux (stage name Richard Keith) began playing Little Ricky. Keith was two years, one and a half months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr. Keith filmed his first episode "Lucy and Bob Hope" when he was five and a half years old. When the final Lucy/Desi episode "Lucy Meets the Mustache" was filmed in March 1960 (in which Keith performed a drum solo) he was nine years old. By that time Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were seven years old.
One of my favorite episodes was No Children Allowed, and the episode I think was called Never Do Business with Friends, where the Ricardos and the Mertzes fought over the washing machine! She added so much to that show! Thanks for this video!
Thanks to her watching little Ricky, many things were able to happen with everyone. Thanks for the video Rick, I always look forward to a new video from you.
Elizabeth Patterson was indeed a perfect choice for covering that dilemma, especially loved Vivian Vance's slight blooper in the episode "No Children Allowed " when she refers to Dorothy (Rosie O' Donnell's mother? ...lol !) at card game set up her reference to Mrs " Turnbull " when telling her story....AGAIN !! LOL !! I always get a bit teary eyed as Mrs Trimble softly tells little Ricky that he will always have her to be around so that he will no longer ever be left alone. Yes, Elizabeth --great addition.
Too funny, Rick! I'm one that would forget about the baby but then I might think...umm, where's your baby? I do remember thinking sometimes when they're all about to run out someplace, hey! You're lucky that woman is always there to watch your baby!
I loved the episode where Mrs. Trumbull hears about a talent scout coming, and she gets all dressed as a Spanish señiorita, all in black lace and with a traditional comb at the back of her head with a lace mantilla! She enters the Ricardo's apartment tapping castinetts and just barely singing Ay, ay, ya, yaa, from the song Cielto Lindo! She was a total crack up! Her character added alot to I Love Lucy! ☺️
I just loved Mrs Trumbull! How that tiny senior woman could actually carried him around as much as we were told, I don’t know. LOL The show wouldn’t have been the same without her!
I actually missed Mrs. Trumble when everyone moved to Connecticut. When the Mertz’s moved to the country with the Ricardos, I think the last we ever heard of Mrs. Trumble was that her sister wanted to move in and manage the building. The same thing happened with Lucy’s mother. She disappeared with the move to Connecticut as well. They were great characters, you’d think that Lucy’s mother would be in a few more episodes, but I guess they didn’t need her.
It would have been cool to mention that the man with with Elizabeth Patterson was Irving Bacon who would eventually play Ethel’s father in Ethel’s Hometown
Mrs. Trumble also saved the show as when they moved to Connecticut, her sister took over as manager of the apartment building and that allowed the Mertzes to move there and continue with the Ricardos.
As soon as I saw your title of the video, I immediately thought that she saved it by being the character to always take care of Little Ricky. Ive thought of that many times. There are times when neither the baby mor Mrs Trumble are in the episode but just mentioned as being together for the sake of the plot.
In watching I Love Lucy, whenever Lucy had a crazy idea mrs. Trumble was always handy. Even though she may not have been in that particular episode mrs. Trumble was always ready to babysit no matter what day or what time. And doing it for free! What a great babysitter. Everyone needs a mrs. Trumble in their lives and there's a neighbor. Thanks for a great inside on the babysitting dilemma. I think a lot of TV shows fast forward the kids aged because it can really create a lot more activity in the show. You can't do much as a baby they can't talk yet only cry so they make the kid get older overnight. Lucy is a classic show it always brings a smile to your face no matter how many thousands of times you've seen it.
It made sense to have someone take care of little Ricky since an infant can’t really participate in plot lines. Also, I think it added some depth to the series and another level of friendship/community within the apartment building. I also liked that Mrs. Trumbull and Lucy‘s mother seem to be friends. Another great video.
The dear little actress Elizabeth Patterson also played the key role of a very concerned citizen when a Black man, played by Juano Hernandez, was FALSELY charged with killing a White man in the late 1940s movie INTRUDER IN THE DUST! In the film, she took it upon herself to do some investigating that revealed who the actual murderer was with the help of 2 teen-aged boys! I bought the film on DVD several years ago, long after I Love Lucy was only in reruns, and was delighted to see "Mrs. Trumble" in that role! I've loved that sweet actress even more ever since!
Thank you Rick for the great work behind again 😘 Love Mrs Trumble in the lucy's birthday episode...she was so funny throwing the confettis! Love from France from your french fan🇨🇵😘❤
At least they did keep the baby in the story line, unlike some shows years later where a child was there one week, and gone the next week with never a mention again. Kind of like Tiger in The Brady Bunch!

Hey Rick. I'm just watching ILL.The episode where they buy the diner. They are having the pie fight! Mrs. Trumble was a great character. However we don't see her again when they move into their house. Too bad.

Cool piece Rick..I remember that they relied on misses Trumbel alot ..at first I thought she was a mean old spinster..a old maid but but she then became like a extended family member who watched and loved the child..I think she played a important role..and a fine actress..thanks for the memories Rick!!
As a big I Love Lucy fan and watching countless shows, I agree with your observations about the use of Mrs. Trumble as the, may I say a "device", to get baby Ricky out of the way when he could not be envolved in the story of a show. I enjoyed your video very much, thank you.
Thank you, Rick, for your wonderful content. Mrs Trumble and Fred Mertz are my all-time favourite "I Love Lucy" characters, it's so sweet the scenes of Mrs Trumble and Little Ricky together. Your content's insprired a search into Elizabeth Patterson's career prior to her role on "Lucy" - thanks again for a wonderful body of work and in particular for highlighting one of my favourite TV characters from the classic era of B&W TV-series. Many heartfelt thanks from Melbourne, Australia 🧡💛💚💙💜💗
Mrs. Trumble also became the apartment manager after Fred and Ethel moved to Connecticut. Changing the subject, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance would mention their real life friends on the show. One of Vivian Vance's real life friend was Jane Sebastian, the mother of John Sebastian who was a founder of The Lovin' Spoonful and writer of the Welcome Back Kotter theme song. Jane Sebastian is mentioned at least one time, but I think she's mentioned a couple more times.
Later on, they used Lucy's mother for many of those episodes. This mirrored what was going on in real life with Lucy's kids. Her extended family frequently took care of her real kids, too.
I didn't miss Little Ricky as a baby since once Mrs. Trumble became the go to Person, I knew he'd always be safe. Then when Little Ricky became old enough to be a recurring character it took the show to another level and was right on time.
It was actually "Mrs. Trumbull". Her nephew called her "Aunt Matilda" in the Never Do Business with Friends episode. In the episode No Children Allowed, Ethel accidently called her "Mrs Trimbell", at the afternoon bridge club with the girls. This was her first appearance as Mrs. Trumbull.
Great video Rick! I think they handled it perfectly! And there were some episodes that focused on little Ricky as well. We’re you called Little Ricky when you were little?😂🤣
Thank you for that video it's amazing how one person thumbs down I Love Lucy video everyone loves Lucy just like everyone loves food LOL. I love your videos keep them coming
I've always said that if little Ricky was real in life, he would've grown up with some serious abandonment issues. He had little screen time as a baby, he was on camera for few seconds and then he was off to bed, off to a walk, being watched by Mrs. Trumbull, etc.
A woman born in antique times: 1874 -- perhaps she is the earliest-born actor to appear in the show? Star Trek (OS) had an actor or two born in the early 1880s, but no one from the 1870s. Hard to believe that there was a time when many people alive today might see an old guy and it would turn out they were Civil War veterans; nowadays no ww1 veterans although there are a few people born during ww1 around. Even ww2 vets are becoming increasingly rare with the youngest well over 90.
There is also a major continuity error involving Mrs. Trumbull. In "No Children Allowed" It is revealed that Mrs. Trumbull lives upstairs from the Ricardos. When she's banging because the Baby is Crying and Lucy says, "Maybe She's Hanging Pictures", and Ricky replies "On The Floor"? So that tells us that Mrs. Trumbull lives directly above the Ricardos. However, in the episode "Vacation From Marriage", they go up to the roof from the Ricardos apartment, up the flight of stairs. It had to be only one flight of stairs because when they get locked on the roof and Ethel looked through the keyhole on the door, she could see Ricky and Fred sitting on the stairs. If there were another story to the building, the staircase would have had a turn in it, and it would be impossible to see if anyone was sitting on the stairs two flights down. Ricky and Fred would have no reason to sit on the landing on the floor ABOVE the Ricardo's apartment. What say you, Rick?
The only time Mrs. Trumble didn't babysit was the episode where Lucy as usual gets into the show as as Indian with the ingenious idea of having little Ricky straddled on her back as a surprise when she turns around after big Ricky asks who's taking care of little Ricky.
Rick,
Great video, and great tribute to Elizabeth Patterson, who will always be remembered as the reliable Mrs. Trumble.

I also loved Mrs. Trumble in “Lucy’s Last Birthday” episode. She was a real friend to Lucy when Lucy thought that no one had remembered her birthday! ❤️

Friendssss of the Friendless
Telling Lucy to hold her breath to get rid of hiccups Only to find out her watch doesn't work. While Lucy is about to drop while doing it LOL.
I always loved her...so sweet and kind. We all need a Mrs Trumble in our lives...someone elderly and wise.
She was also a good amount of comic filler as well. And she made us feel good about the Ricardo's as a family.
I liked how, no matter what, the Ricardos never forgot to get a babysitter for little ricky....
I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Once she fell in love with Little Ricky, they had a built in babysitter! I would think at times watching the show how lucky they were that she was always available. I loved her, I think she was perfectly cast as Mrs. Trumbull! Good one, Rick! 😊

Ethel, Mrs. Trumble(Patterson), and Carolyn Appleby were my favorites in that order.
I've always said that if little Ricky was real in life, he would've grown up with some serious abandonment issues. He had little screen time as a baby, he was on camera for few seconds and then he was off to bed, off to a walk, being watched by Mrs. Trumbull, etc.
Mrs. Trumble was holding the baby ,and when they showed the crib , you can see the Lucy and Desi characters on the pillow !
Yes, bc it served the plot to make it funny she was carrying the baby the whole time haha
I Love Lucy never needed saving. But Mrs Trumble was a darling bit part.
Yeah, they've all been gone a long time now.
The show was already into reruns when I was a little kid watching in the early 60s. ✌
